RUTH BAKER Kerbow Funeral Home ELDORADO - An amazing lady who lived a full, interesting life of 105 years, died on Wednesday, March 26, 2003, in the Schleicher County Nursing Home. Miss Ruth Baker was born on February 5, 1898, in Grayson County and moved to Schleicher County with her parents, William Eli and Mollie West Baker on September 16, 1906. "Miss Ruth" was the only daughter in the family along with three brothers who preceded her: Fred, Leslie and Thomas. The family came by train, bringing a few cattle along with the rest of their possessions. They lived west of Eldorado and Ruth attended the Kaffir School. Later when the children were of high school age, the family moved to town and Ruth graduated from Eldorado High School. After attending Denton Normal College, she taught school in Runnels County for four years. She returned to Schleicher County and served as the county librarian for 26 years, retiring in 1970. Until a few years ago she was active in the Christian Church and was a member of the Home Demonstration Club, and was president of the Schleicher County Historical Society for a number of years. Ruth had the distinction of seeing Haley's Comet twice in her lifetime. She first saw it as a teenager in the early 1900s and 76 years later at age 99 she witnessed the comet again. Ruth remembered trips to San Angelo when she was growing up as great adventures. It took two days in a wagon to make the journey and the family would stay overnight with friends on Pecan Creek. While in San Angelo, they stayed in a hotel and they left their team in the wagon yard. The family made about two trips a year to San Angelo to buy goods and supplies. Ever the lady, she could surprise everyone with her honest opinions, with an especially graphic description about a particular relative. When offered a car and driving lessons she declined, saying she could walk anywhere she needed to go. Miss Ruth adamantly refused a blood transfusion, telling her doctor she did not want to get AIDS, and the event occurred as the disease was just become known. "Miss Ruth" or "Aunt Ruth" as she often was called, enjoyed reading, music, gardening and working in her yard. For many years, she kept a few chickens and a cow and canned many jars of fruit, vegetables, jams, jellies and preserves. Love Will Never Die Your love is like the Wind it blows on forever Your love is like the Sun it shines way After you are gone Your love is like the Mountain it stands Straight and strong Your love is like a flower It blooms beautifully With pride Your love is like a tree It grows sky high Your love will never Die it gets passed on - Courtnie Snyder, dedicated by family JEWEL CARR SHELTON POTTER Johnson's Funeral Home Jewel Carr Shelton Potter of San Angelo, Texas, peacefully passed away on Friday, March 21, 2003. She had fought a 10-year battle with Alzheimer's disease. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 24, at First Christian Church in San Angelo. The Rev. Ben Hubert, senior minister, and Associate Minister Karen Schmeltekopf will conduct the service. The family will receive visitors in the fellowship hall following the service. A memorial service also will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 31, at Ridglea Christian Church in Fort Worth. A graveside service will be in Greenwood Cemetery for members of the immediate family. She was born on Aug. 12, 1917, in San Angelo. Her parents were Will Luther and Arvilla Allen Carr, who were both children with multiple siblings. Thus, there are many very loved and important aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives of Jewel's in San Angelo. She had two sisters, Angie Carr Brown and Vera Carr Fant. Jewel grew up both at the family's farm in Coke County and San Angelo, where she lived with her sister, Angie and brother-in-law, Kenneth Brown, to attend high school and Angelo Junior College. Throughout the years, she enjoyed the many hours spent at Kenneth and Angie's North Concho Ranch. After graduating from Angelo Junior College, she worked as a society columnist at the San Angelo Standard-Times where she met Charles Shelton. They were married prior to his going to World War II. Jewel and her friends would go the newspaper office every Sunday to see if she had mail from Charles, who also wrote stories about the war for the newspaper. When he returned, they helped start the baby boom era by producing their only child, Scott Charles Shelton. Charles Shelton died in 1967. Jewel was a very devout Christian and member of First Christian Church in San Angelo, where she was the director of Christian education. She moved to Fort Worth in 1962 to become an assistant director of admissions, recruiting students from all over the U.S. and even Europe to TCU. While at TCU, she earned her undergraduate degree and met her second husband, the Rev. Clayton L. Potter. She retired from TCU 17 years later as associate dean of admissions. While Jewel and Clayton were married, she enjoyed very much her role as minister's wife, where Clayton pastored at Ridglea Christian Church in Fort Worth until his unexpected death in 1971. After retiring from TCU, Jewel entered the real estate market and worked for William Rigg Realtors. Jewel finally decided to return "home" to San Angelo in 1986. She continued working in real estate for a few more years in San Angelo with Steve Stewart Realtors before retiring for real. Jewel was a strong believer in volunteerism and, while in San Angelo, she was a member of the Women's Service League. She was president of the Women's Service League during the time it received the charter in February 1957 that made San Angelo a Junior League, thereby completing her tenure also as the first president of the new Junior League. When she returned to San Angelo, she became active again at First Christian Church, serving numerous roles, including deacon and elder and enjoyed being an active member of the Henson Sunday School class. She enjoyed delivering meals for the elderly and attending the symphony and Angelo Community Theatre productions with her many friends. Jewel had been a world traveler following retirement and had made it to almost every continent. She went on several trips sponsored by TCU in particular and enjoyed studying each country before she went. We have no doubt that she would have continued setting the world on fire had Alzheimer's not robbed her of the ability to travel. She enjoyed playing bridge, working in her garden and the camaraderie of her friends. She loved walking, especially with her beloved dog, Lady. Jewel reveled in her family and enjoyed being "Grammer" to Valerie and Stephen. In fact, almost everyone called Jewel "Grammer" and it was a role she relished. She was a wonderful grandmother, always playing games, attending special events where they performed, and hiking and climbing mountains in the Conejos Valley of southern Colorado, picking raspberries along the way. Jewel had traveled to Colorado almost every summer for over 50 years. While blue was Jewel's favorite color, purple was right at the top also, as she was a "true blue" TCU fan. She loved going to Horned Frog games and this Christmas her family made sure that her door at Sagecrest had a wreath with a purple frog that played the TCU fight song and proclaimed TCU being Liberty Bowl bound. She left a legacy of a scholarship at TCU that bears her name. There was not a more loving, caring woman than Jewel Carr Shelton Potter. She lived her final years under the wonderful care of the staff at Baptist Memorials and Sagecrest Alzheimer's Care Center and her final days with excellent care by the staff at Shannon Hospital North and VistaCare Hospice. The tragedy of Alzheimer's disease is that she lost a lifetime of memories. But her family and many friends that she had made throughout the years will remember for her. As family members went through her belongings a few years ago to prepare for her to move to assisted living, it was a trip down memory lane. Most affirming were the many cards and letters the family found that stated "Dear Jewel, you really are one." Jewel was preceded in death as well by her sister, Angie and her husband, Kenneth Brown; her sister, Vera and her husband, Sherrill Fant; and her nephew, Wilbur Carr Brown. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Tricia Shelton; her grandchildren, Valerie and her husband, Brian Tabor, and Stephen Carr Shelton and his wife, Emily; two great-grandchildren, Claire Shelton, three years old, and Michael Scott Shelton, five weeks old, both children of Stephen and Emily. A new baby is the greatest testament of the cycle of life. She also is survived by several nieces and nephews: niece, Brenda Brown Barbutti of San Angelo and her children, Kenneth Barbutti of San Angelo, Gregory Barbutti of Austin and Phillip Barbutti and wife, Autumn, of College Station, Texas; niece, Jo Fant Valliant and husband, Ed, and their children, Brian Valliant of Saginaw, and Susan Valliant of Arlington, Texas; nephew, John Fant and wife, Ann, and their children, Johnny Fant and wife, Terri, and Margie Fant Youngblood and husband, Harvey, all of Fort Worth, Texas, Mary Fant and Charles Fant, both of San Angelo; and the children of Wilbur Carr Brown, Deborah Brown Grissen and husband, Jim, and Marshall Brown and wife, Susan, all of San Angelo; Goddaughter, Carol Brown Winston and husband, Randy, of Lufkin; two stepdaughters, Patricia Potter Vary of DeKalb, Ill., and Penny Potter Hong of Rockport, Texas, also survive her. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to one of the following or to a charity of your choice, First Christian Church, 29 Oakes St. San Angelo, TX 76903, C.L. & Jewel Potter Endowed Scholarship, c/o Texas Christian University Advancement, TCU Box 297044, Ft. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. We love you, Jewel, because "You really are one."
