Walt Landers officiating. Graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. in the Santa Anna Cemetery. Billy was born Oct. 26, 1935, in Santa Anna to J. Frank and Claudie Brown. He worked 13 years for 'M' System Food Store and for more than 25 years at the Goodyear Proving Grounds as a driver. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Billie Brown; brother, James Brown and wife, Billie Earl; sister, Anna Lee Herring; stepchildren, Steve Lynn and wife, Charlene, Paul Lynn, Rick Lynn and wife, Kim, Connie Chrane and husband, Bobby, Billie Jean Eller and husband, Brent, and Cresta Hensen; 10 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren. WALLACE VERNON CLARY Johnson's Funeral Home Wallace Vernon Clary, 77, of San Angelo died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at his residence. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, at Johnson's Funeral Home. Service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 17, at Paul Ann Baptist Church with ministers Kirt Dauphin and William Rosser officiating. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. in Locker Cemetery in San Saba County, Texas. Wallace was born Jan. 13, 1926, in Brownwood, Texas, to Ollie Vernon and Annye Letha Wallace Clary. Wallace graduated from Buffalo High School in 1944 and joined the United States Navy, where he served during World War II. He retired as hatchery superintendent, after 31 years, with the Texas Parks and Wildlife. He was a member of PaulAnn Baptist Church. Wallace was married to Wanna V. Neal on May 2, 1948, in San Saba, Texas. Survivors include his wife, Wanna Neal Clary of San Angelo; children, Elaine Moore and husband, Loyd, of San Angelo, Diane Schwertner and husband, Herb, of Kingsville, Janie Whittley and husband, Craig, of Granger; brother, Donald Clary and wife, Nancy, of Corpus Christi; sisters, Jean Smith and Wanda Rose, both of Austin; grandchildren, Megan and Myles Moore of San Angelo, Wolfgang and Wendy Schwertner of Kingsville, Jason, Randa and Kendra Whittley of Granger; one aunt, Edith Clary of San Angelo; and several nieces, nephews and cousins . The family requests memorials be made to Paul Ann Baptist Church Building Fund, Hospice of San Angelo or a favorite charity. GEORGE WILFORD DRAPER SR. Kerbow Funeral Home ELDORADO - George Wilford Draper Sr. went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 11, 2003. George was the youngest of the nine children of Nicholena Calloway Draper and Michael Lee Draper. He was born on Feb. 14, 1922, at the family home in Pontotoc, Texas. George attended school there and graduated from Melvin High School. Upon graduating, he moved to San Angelo, Texas, until he joined the Air Force on Oct. 16, 1942. Shortly before joining the Air Force, he attended the Brady Jubilee, and it was there that he met his wife, Corene Luedecke Draper. They were married on Dec. 12, 1942. After receiving an honorable discharge from the service on Jan. 26, 1946, George, Corene and George Jr. returned to San Angelo. The young family worked on a ranch in Rocksprings before moving to Kent, Texas, to continue their ranching career. Before their second child, Mary Ann, was born, George moved his family to Schleicher County. They soon established their home and George went to work for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service. It was during this time that their third child, Candi, was born. George eventually retired from the ASCS office to farm and ranch. His happiest memories always involved ranching, hunting and fishing. George was preceded in death by wife, Corene; brothers, Lawrence Draper, M.L. Draper and Leslie Draper; and sisters, Sadie Draper Gratzel, Lorena Draper Hughes and Nola Draper Spivey. He is survived by their children, George W. Draper Jr. and his wife, Joan Doyle Draper, Mary Ann Elliott and her husband, Efferson Elliott, and Candi Draper Homer and her husband, Kurtis Homer. Grandchildren include Shay Draper, Tobi Draper, Patti Thomerson Jones, Will Thomerson, Scott Homer and Heather Homer. Surviving sisters include Helen Draper Terry and Ardelia Draper Rutherford. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. The family has requested that memorials be made to The Texas Commission for the Blind and West Texas Rehab. ALVICE CHAMBERS FERGUSON Alvice Chambers Ferguson, 87, joined her loved ones in eternal rest Palm Sunday, April 13, 2003. Mrs. Ferguson was born Alvice Velleslie Duncan on Oct. 23, 1915, in Springfield, Mo. She grew up in Kingsville, Texas, where she graduated from Texas College of Arts and Industries in 1936. A resident of San Angelo for 50 years, she moved to San Angelo in 1946 when her husband, Bill Chambers, took a teaching position at San Angelo College. He preceded her in death in 1958. In 1963, she married Garlan R. Ferguson. He passed away in 1977. She had resided at Morningside Manor in San Antonio, Texas, the last seven years. Mrs. Ferguson was a longtime teacher in San Angelo schools, teaching first at Rio Vista and then at Bradford Elementary School. She was a member of the First Christian Church, AAUW, Retired Teachers Association and the ASU Lunch Bunch. Alvice Ferguson is survived by daughters, Velleslie Chambers Smith of Roswell, N.M., and Mary Chambers Clark of San Antonio, Texas, and their husbands, Mike Smith and Mark Clark. Also surviving are stepsons, Dr. Charlie B. Ferguson and Kenneth Ferguson, both of Alabama. Besides 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, she is survived by a brother-in-law, Crawford B. Reeder of San Antonio, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews. Service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, at Johnson's Funeral Home with her nephew, the Rev. M. ANNA MARIA MACIEL GAITAN Gutierrez Funeral Chapels/North Anna Maria Maciel Gaitan, 39, of San Angelo, passed away on Tuesday, April 15, 2003, in a local hospital. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 20 in Gutierrez Funeral Chapels/North. Funeral Mass will be at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, April 21 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Mrs. Gaitan was born on Nov. 4, 1963, in San Angelo. She was preceded in death by her mother, Simona Maciel; and one brother, Hector Casanova. Survivors include four sons, Abel Gaitan, David Gaitan, Danny Gaitan and Damian Arroyo, all of San Angelo; and one daughter, Susan Gaitan, also of San Angelo. Also surviving is one brother, Joe Maciel Jr. and wife, Patricia, of San Angelo; her father, Jose Maciel Sr.; longtime companion, Tony Arroyo; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles; and three grandchildren. She was born May 27, 1906, to George Edward and Lillian King Woods in San Saba County, Texas. Bernice moved to Llano County when she was four years old. At 16, she joined the Primitive Baptist Church at Field Creek, Llano County and was baptized by Elder S.N. Redford. She then moved to Schleicher County, Eldorado, Texas, and married Eugene Vernon Gibson on Dec. 31, 1929. From this union four children were born, Eugene Vernon Jr. of Eldorado, Texas, Bernice Louise Harrell of Ballinger, Texas, Edward Clinton Gibson of Lewisville, Texas, and Karen Rebecca Baker of San Antonio, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband and her son, Edward. Other survivors include 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Dorothy Gibson and Faye Gibson; and one son-in-law, James Harrell. Service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 18, at Squaw Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Doss, Texas. Interment will follow in Squaw Creek Cemetery. FAYE GRAVES Johnson's Funeral Home Faye Graves went home to be with her Lord at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2003. She was born on March 18, 1922, in Duncan, Okla., to Ruth and Herbert Carroll, and had been a resident of San Angelo for almost 40 years. She was a loving wife and mother who was loved by many. She was also a strong Christian who loved her Lord and was a faithful member of Glen Meadows Baptist Church. Faye was employed as a bookkeeper by Jones, Hay, Sanders and Company. She was in the American Legion Auxiliary for 37 years. After she retired, she was an active volunteer for San Angelo TEC Credit Union, San Angelo Volunteer Service Council, Mended Hearts and American Heart Association. Faye used her bookkeeping experience to help many of these organizations, as well as many of her friends. Survivors include her husband, Ed Graves; her children, Karen Williams, Eddie and Sue Graves, Linda and Gerald Witt, and Debbie Graves; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; one sister, Mona Archer; and one niece, Eileen Cook and husband, Jim. JAMES H GRUBBS Robert Massie Funeral Home James H. Grubbs, 72, of San Angelo passed away on Wednesday, April 16, 2003, in a local hospital following a brief illness. Family visitation will be from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, April 20 at Robert Massie Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 21, at the First Baptist Church of San Angelo, located at the corner of Harris and Oakes, with Pastor Kyle Reese officiating. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. James was born Nov. 6, 1930, to Charlie James and Hattie Mae Grubbs at the family home in Hopkins County, Texas. Shortly after graduating from high school, he entered the United States Air Force. He served for 26 years, including tours of duty in Germany, Korea and Vietnam. Upon his retirement from the Air Force in 1975, he was employed with the San Angelo Independent School District for 11 years. Since then he worked at what he loved the most, which was being outdoors, working with his hands and using his talents to help others. James had been a member of First Baptist Church of San Angelo since 1972, where he served as a deacon, greeter and bus driver. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Pauline Grubbs of San Angelo; son and daughter-in- law, Gary and Vicki Grubbs of Columbia, Tenn.; daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Ross Riddles of Flower Mound, Texas; daughter, Lynn Grubbs of San Angelo; sister, Faye Chism; sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Bob Ray of Winnsboro, Texas; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. JOSE "JOE" ARTURO HERRERA Johnson's Funeral Home Mr. Herrera died early Monday morning, April 14, 2003, near Bovina, Texas. He was a sergeant on the Friona Police Department. He was a member of the U.S. Police K-9 Association and a handler of the Friona Police Department K-9 Unit. He was born Feb. 16, 1972, in Corpus Christi. He had lived in Friona for the past five years, moving from Sonora, Texas. He married Rachael Turner on March 23, 2003, in Friona. He is survived by his wife; three daughters, C'Aren and Kelcey Herrera, both of San Angelo, and Victoria Herrera of Friona; one son, Matthew Herrera of San Angelo; his parents, Robert and Elva Herrera of San Angelo; a brother, Tony Herrera and wife, Libby, of Hewitt, Texas; a sister, Debra Lombrana and special brother-in-law, Nune of San Angelo; niece, Alexis Lombrana; and nephews, John Victor and Michael Lombrana of San Angelo. PEGGY LOU TITTLE NELSON Fort Stockton Funeral Home FORT STOCKTON - Peggy Lou Tittle Nelson, 68, of Fort Stockton, Texas, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003. She was married 47 years to John A. Nelson. They resided in Fort Stockton, where they raised three children, Tammy Huckaby, Tipp Nelson and Tonya Poindexter. From these children, she was blessed with 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. After graduating from Sul Ross with a BA in elementary education, Peggy taught one year in Pecos and 29 years as a 4th grade teacher in Fort Stockton. During the early 70s she owned and operated The Branch, a Christian bookstore in Fort Stockton. Peggy was very involved in youth ministry and supported over 40 active mission organizations and ministries. As a member of First United Methodist Church, she participated as a youth leader, Sunday school teacher, in women's circle, study groups, lunch-bunch ladies, various prayer groups and office volunteer. For seven years, she volunteered as a pink lady at Pecos County Memorial Hospital. She is survived by her husband, John A. Nelson; daughters, Tammy Huckaby of Fort Stockton and Tonya and her husband, Chad Poindexter, of Ozona; son, Tipp Nelson and his wife, Jill, of Danville, Calif.; brother, Bill Tittle and his wife, Phyllis, of Abilene Texas; sister, Jayne Cockrell and her husband, Tommy, of Artesia N.M.; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandson; along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Peggy had the vision for the West Texas for Jesus Rally, which was held Feb. 7 and 8th this year. Over 300 people attended and more than 80 people accepted Christ as Savior. Mrs. Parker was born May 28, 1908, in Sonora, Texas, to Patrick Henry Lee and Medie Simmons Lee. She graduated from Ozona High School in 1927. She attended College of Industrial Arts in Denton and graduated from Draughon's Business College in Del Rio in 1936. Mrs. Parker married J.B. Parker on Jan. 12, 1947, in Rankin, Texas. She was a member of the Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.B. "Beatus" Parker on Jan. 2, 2003. WILLIAM "BILL" JOE VILES Johnson's Funeral Home William "Bill" Joe Viles, 88, of San Angelo passed away Sunday, April 13, 2003, in San Angelo. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 17, in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens with Dr. Jerold McBride officiating. Bill was born March 31, 1915, to Joseph N. Viles and Bessie Shelton in Cooper, Texas. Mr. Viles served as a fireman in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He was a member of the Baptist Church his whole life and his membership in San Angelo was at the First Baptist Church since 1990. He worked as an insurance salesman for Bankers Life and Casualty for 28 years. Mr. Viles married Mary Hazelwood on Dec. 27, 1943, in Corsicana, Texas. Bill devoted his life to Mary and they celebrated 54 beautiful years together. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; two sisters and two brothers. He is survived by niece and nephew, Julie and Carl Akins of Denver, Colo.; great-nephews, Joe Vandiver of San Angelo and Carl Vandiver of Orlando, Fla.; great-great-niece, Christie Vandiver of San Angelo; brother and sister-in-law, Albert and Helen Hazelwood of San Angelo; and sister- in-law, Dorothy Viles of Sugarland, Texas. MARY BRIDGEWATER WILBANKS Johnson's Funeral Home Mary Bridgewater Wilbanks, 86, long-term resident of Tom Green County, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2003. She was born in Bellfalls, Texas, Feb. 25, 1907. She and John Wilbanks were married Dec. 22, 1925, and began their life together on the Door Key Ranch, southeast of Christoval. They moved to San Angelo in 1955. John preceded her in death in 1982. She is survived by a daughter and son- in-law, Billie Van Court and Tip Van Court. Grandchildren are Johnny and Phyllis Van Court and Stephen Van Court of Christoval; and one great-granddaughter, Lacy Van Court of Brooklyn, N.Y. Mrs. Wilbanks had many interests. She worked with 4- H and Home Extension Clubs, instructed in mattress making during World War II, and was instrumental in design and beautification of roadside parks in the area. She served as president of the Auxiliary of World War I Veterans Post 1537 in 1961 and 1962. She became interested in the process of nature dyeing and created many beautiful and intricate articles from the yarn she dyed. She was an active church woman and was recognized by the First Baptist Church of San Angelo in 1992 for having taught Sunday school for 65 years. She was active in the History Committee in preparation for their centennial celebration. She enjoyed the pursuit of the genealogy of her own family and collecting oral history for Fort Concho. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 19, in Fairmount Cemetery officiated by the Rev. Larry Shotwell, associate pastor of First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Natalie Jaree Woodfin; brother, Michael Lang Shipman; and sister, Myrna Haney. She is survived by her loving husband and soul mate of 47 years, Lloyd Neal Woodfin Sr.; two daughters, Pamela Beth Bethune and Arcola Diane John and her husband, Haydn; and two sons, Lloyd Neal Woodfin Jr. and his wife, Sheri, and Jarrod Lee Woodfin and Angelica Chavez. She also is survived by grandchildren, Jerry Don Woodfin and his wife, Danielle, Heather Janae Kwolek and her husband, Aaron, Shannon Denise John, Brandon Matthew John, Whitney Evette Woodfin, Davis Neal Smith Woodfin and Elijah Daniel Woodfin; and great- grandchildren, Jaylea Nicole Woodfin, Samantha Nichole Holley, Dawson Jack Woodfin and David Michael Kwolek. She also is survived by two brothers, Ed Shipman and Royce Shipman; sister, Veneta Herrington; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Melvin Ray Herrington, Doug and Nell Woodfin and Sherry Hasty; and her many nieces and nephews. Lloyd and Mivan were married on Oct. 3, 1955, in Carlsbad, N.M., and were never apart for more than a day. They loved each other dearly and were an example of a perfect marriage. Mivan was the best wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and sister that anyone could ever hope for, and she loved everyone with all her heart. She was loved more deeply than she could ever imagine and she will be missed until we meet her again in heaven some day. Mivan was superwoman. The only thing she could not do was fly; she is complete because now she can do that. We love you, Maw Maw!
