MARJORIE ELIZABETH ROSE NILSSON Johnson's Funeral Home Marjorie Elizabeth Rose Nilsson, 93, died Saturday, April 26, 2003, at her home after an extended illness. Funeral service will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday, April 28, at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. Ronald Sutto officiating. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Grandsons and Richard Easingwood will be pallbearers. Born on May 6, 1909, in Wapokenata, Ohio, as one of seven children of Joseph E. Rose and Leanora Zink Rose, she spent her childhood in Muskogee, Okla. On June 6, 1927, she married Lawson E. (Swede) Nilsson, who was the center of her life for the next 64 years. The couple lived in Muskogee, Hobbs, N. M. and Odessa prior to moving to San Angelo in 1950, where Mr. Nilsson was in the oil business. A woman who often described herself as "just a homemaker," Marjorie Nilsson perfected the art of making people welcome in her home, at her table and in her heart. She was "Mamaw" first to her grandchildren, but ultimately to dozens of friends of all ages who sought out her delightfully innocent humor, her simple but powerful wisdom, and her intense interest in those she loved. Next to family, her greatest joy was service to her church where she was a longtime Sunday school teacher. For 46 years, she faithfully prepared the bread and juice used as Sacraments of the Lord's Supper for every Communion served at First Presbyterian Church of San Angelo. How typical of her that she would find a way to turn the skills of "just a homemaker" into a special gift to the Lord! In gratitude for her service, the church had a silver chalice handcrafted for Marjorie, which she wore with pride. As her children and grandchildren grew up, she was always involved in their school and extra- curricular activities. In later years, she shared her huge capacity for love and compassion with hundreds of people who especially needed those gifts, first as a volunteer at San Angelo State School and more recently as a volunteer at West Texas Rehabilitation Center. At the Rehab Center, where she worked one afternoon each week for more than 16 years, she became "Mamaw" to both staff and patients. Marjorie is survived by four children, Pat Attebery and Joe Hurd, both of San Angelo, Ned Nilsson and wife, Trudy, of Canyon Lake and Bill Nilsson and wife, Virginia, of San Antonio. She also is survived by 10 grandchildren, Marjorie (Marjie) Shirey of San Angelo, Mark Attebery and wife, Susan, of Azle, Paul and Todd Nilsson of Canyon Lake, Noel Nilsson, Kyla Benavides and husband, Roger, Krista Westby and husband, Jim, Keith Nilsson, Karma Nilsson and Chris Steves, all of San Antonio, and Freddy Hurd and wife, Monika, of Germany. In addition, there are six great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings include Dorothy Wilkinson of San Antonio and Carl Rose and his wife, Dolly, of Ashland, Wis. Mrs. Nilsson was preceded in death by her husband who died on Nov. 10, 199l; her first grandchild, Ned Attebery who died on Jan. 15, 1968; and grandson-in-law, Randy Vee Shirey who died on May 16, 2001. Also preceding her in death were siblings, Edwarda Templeton and Ralph, Gene and Joe Rose. The family invites those who choose to make charitable gifts in Marjorie Nilsson's memory to consider Hospice of San Angelo, which provided loving care during her last illness, or West Texas Rehabilitation Center, which she personally supported for many years.
