He was a much adored husband, father, brother, uncle and friend who will be fondly remembered and sorely missed. Philip, the youngest of the seven children of Basil Dexter Arthur and Mary Ann (Roach) Arthur, was born on Oct. 30, 1922, in Knickerbocker. Although his birth certificate showed his middle name as Phillip, he went by Philip his whole life. He spent his childhood in Knickerbocker. In 1939, he graduated as the valedictorian of his class at Christoval High School. Philip, one of the first of his family to attend college, was awarded an associates degree from San Angelo College in 1941. After college, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, where he attained the rank of sergeant while serving the nation in World War II. Following the war, Philip married Bessie Ann Urban and raised two children, Alan and Connie, in San Angelo. A civilian employee of what is now Goodfellow Air Force Base, he had a long and successful career in the Base Civil Engineering group before retiring in 1981. In 1976, Philip and Dorothy Hardin Lewis were married, and a fairy tale love story began that spanned more than a quarter of a century. In retirement, he discovered golf and loved that game almost as much as he loved his devoted wife, Dorothy. He played almost every day, and though practice makes perfect for some, it never worked for him. He didn't care, though. He loved the game and thoroughly enjoyed all of the wonderful buddies he played with throughout the years. When he wasn't playing golf, Philip was active at the San Angelo Meals for the Elderly where he delivered meals for more than 15 years and served on the board of directors. Philip was a lifelong Methodist and a charter member of St. Luke United Methodist Church where he held many leadership positions. A longtime Mason, Philip was honored in 1999 for 50 years of membership in the Concho Masonic Lodge 1260. Philip was known for his gentle, good nature. He had a kind word to say about everyone he knew. His family and friends lit up when he was around and were always glad to see him. He truly was a good man. The family would like to offer a special thanks to the wonderful and dedicated caregivers, Lucy Ramirez, Chris Ornelas and Thelma Huichapa, who enhanced his quality of life during his battle with Parkinson's disease. The family also would like to thank the wonderful nurses from Hospice of San Angelo, especially the kind and loving Sherry Coplen. LOUIS BRYANT WILLIAMS Johnson's Funeral Home Louis Bryant Williams, 91, of San Angelo, died Friday, May 2, 2003, at his residence. Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 5, in Fairmount Cemetery, with the Rev. Ron Sutto of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Mr. Williams was born April 14, 1912, in Mansfield, La., to Willis and Mabel Chaney Williams. He attended public schools in Mansfield and graduated from Louisiana State University with a degree in petroleum engineering. He married his wife, Clara Blanchard in Shreveport, La., in 1936. Bryant was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the Army and participated in three invasion landings during World War II. He left the service in 1946, as a major. After the war, Bryant pursued a career in the oil and gas industry as an independent oil operator. He was a partner with M.D. Bryant and later served as the trustee of the M.D. Bryant estate. He also served as a director of the Tucker Drilling Co. and as a trustee of the Margaret Shannon estate. He was deacon in the Presbyterian Church. Bryant was a longtime supporter of the San Angelo Country Club, serving as president two terms in the 1950s. He enjoyed playing golf and made his second hole in one when he was 80. The following "Definition of a Real Man" by R. Nelson Valentine properly describes Bryant Williams. One who has self-confidence but does not show it. One who can be courteous in the face of discourtesy. One who keeps his word, his temper and his friends. One who wins respect by being respectable and respectful. One who has a steady eye, a steady nerve, a steady tongue and steady habits. One who is silent when he has nothing to say. One who is calm when he judges and humble when he misjudges. That defines a real man and a gentleman and by these standards our father was indeed a "Real Man." He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Clara Blanchard Williams; two sons, Louis Bryant Williams Jr. and wife, Brenda, of Kerrville, Texas, and Lawrence Willis Williams and wife, Susan, of San Angelo, Texas; four grandchildren, Caroline Williams and husband, David Certain, of Kerrville, Texas, Paige Williams Sumner and husband, John Whitmire Sumner, of Midland, Texas, Lawrence Bryant Williams and wife, Alison Williams, of Keller, Texas, and Lal Blanchard Williams and wife, Becca Williams, of Lubbock, Texas; and one great-grandson, Carter Bryant Williams of Keller, Texas. He also is survived by a brother, Willis Williams Jr. and wife, Nancy, and family of Lakeland, Fla.; and a sister-in-law, Marion Blanchard Echterhoff and family of Lakeway, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Willis Wilcox Williams of Mansfield, La. Bryant was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Memorials may be made to West Texas Boys Ranch or the charity of choice. Following retirement from Union Texas Petroleum when the company sold to Western Gas Resources Inc. on Nov. 1, 1991, Bill continued to work for the new owners as an IRD mechanalysis technician until retirement on Jan. 31, 1998. Work became his ballgame early in life and he always enjoyed his job and the people he worked with. Another part of his career included agent for Germania Farm Mutual Insurance Association for the past 25 years. Sports continued to be a part of his life as a coach in Little League and Pony League Baseball; coaching the renowned "RANKIN GO TEAM" was one of the joys of his life. He was an avid fan of the Rankin Red Devils, always supporting the home team, win or lose. His church life was foremost in every way, as was his family. Bill had been a member of First Baptist Church, Rankin, Texas, since 1967, where he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and brotherhood president, and on numerous committees of the local church. Bill presently was serving as a director of the Rankin Chamber of Commerce. Bill's grandchildren always will remember him as Grandpa, the guy that could almost always "FIX IT" if it was broken, a wonderful husband and friend to his wife, and the greatest Dad and father-in-law anyone could hope for. Funeral service for Bill C. Wrinkle will be at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 8, at First Baptist Church, Rankin, Texas, with the Rev. Jim Medley and the Rev. J.C. Tankersley officiating. Our expressions of appreciation go out to the many of you that have faithfully prayed for Bill's health recovery and for the team of doctors and nurses that gave their best during Bill's medical treatment during the past six months. Memorials may be directed to a charity of one's choice.
