JEWEL ROACH BAILEY Preddy Funeral Home OZONA - Jewel Roach Bailey peacefully left this mortal life on June 7, 2003, at home on the Roach Ranch. Jewel was born Aug. 8, 1908, in Schleicher County on the family ranch to Mattie Cloud Roach and Ambrose Roach, an Irish immigrant. She attended a country school, Roach School, walking three miles to class each day for seven years. After attending high school in Mertzon for a year, she graduated from Eldorado High School in 1926. She received a bachelor's of arts degree from Simmons College in Abilene (now Hardin Simmons University) in 1929, and in that same year married her high school sweetheart, T.J. "Jator" Bailey. T.J. and Jewel lived in Abilene until 1944, when they moved to Ozona. In 1945, Jewel was asked to teach junior high English temporarily. Twenty-seven years later, she retired from the "temporary" position, having taught fourth graders for 25 of those years. Efforts on behalf of the children were not limited to the classroom. The trees in front of the primary school are there today because of her and her lifelong teacher friend, Lucille Littleton. The two sold popcorn and tamales to raise the money for the purchase and planting of the trees. Another project these two initiated was a carnival to raise money for sidewalks on the school grounds. Jewel's true interests in life, other than her family, were her church, federated women's clubs and travel. A lifetime member of the Baptist Church (in Eldorado, Abilene and Ozona), she served as both a Sunday school and Bible school teacher. She was a member of the Texas Federated Women's Clubs for 70 years, serving as past president of the Heart of Texas District, as the State "In Memorium" Chairman, and was a member of the state board of trustees for more than 25 years. Locally, she was a member of the Eldorado Woman's Club and the Ozona Woman's Forum, serving as president twice. Jewel was a wonderful public speaker and master storyteller who entertained audiences at the Covered Wagon Dinner Theater in Sonora and at the Schleicher County Centennial. She gave inspirational and motivational talks at clubs and numerous church dedications throughout Texas. She and T.J. had a passion for travel. They toured the United States from one coast to the other, visited relatives in Ireland many times, and toured Europe, the Far East, Mexico, and Canada. She also took cruises with her children, which Jewel enjoyed until she could no longer travel. Her last cruise was in December, 2002. Jewel and T.J. also had a passion for contract bridge. She was a member of bridge clubs in Ozona and Eldorado for more than 50 years. Jewel was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband and best friend for 56 years, "Jator"; and two brothers, A.J. and Eldred Roach. She is survived by a son, Joe Bailey of San Angelo; a daughter, Martha Bailey Henderson of Eldorado; one brother, Jim Roach of Eldorado; three grandchildren, Kevin Bailey, Houston, John L. Henderson III and wife, Jeannine, Ozona and Virginia Howell and husband, John, El Paso; and six great-grandchildren, Drew, Ross, Stuart and Will Howell, and Jenna and Julia Henderson. She also is survived by numerous nephews and nieces. Jewel also leaves a special lifelong friend, Lucille Littleton of Ozona. The family is truly grateful to her friends and caregivers who have been so kind and helpful. A very special gratitude is felt for all the dedicated, unselfish members of Hospice of San Angelo who brought aid and comfort to Jewel and her family, easing the end of her journey. Memorials may be made to Hospice of San Angelo, the Salvation Army, or a charity of your choice. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, June 9, at the Ozona Baptist Church followed by interment in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Ozona. She passed away in St. Luke's Hospital in Houston after a courageous battle against cancer, surrounded by her loving family and dear friend, Peggy Salcido. So the byways will be more lonely now, from the interstates to the back country roads as Neddie made the final trip on her journey back home to be together once again with her loved ones in Pecos. Neddie was born in the West Texas town of Presidio on April 14, 1962, to Mariela Calif and Baltazar Vasquez and raised by her adoptive grandmother, Natividad Dominguez, in Pecos, Texas. She married Mike Molinar on Nov. 10, 1979, in Pecos, Texas, and celebrated 24 years of marriage together. The joy of her life was her two beautiful daughters, LaCrisha and DeeDee, and grandson, Lane. She was a staff member of the Pecos Independent School System for 19 years as a P.E. coach and then as a Parental Involvement Assistant. During her education career she was recognized as Educator of the Month and was the secretary for the PTA. She absolutely loved her profession. Neddie attended Odessa College and was a member of Santa Rosa Catholic Church. She was on this earth for only 41 short years but she lived life with such zeal that it seems she was with us for an eternity. Neddie was an optimist; a doer and above all a person who everyone who knew her could undoubtedly call a friend. She was there for all times, the good and the bad, always ready to lend a helping hand, praise with a kind word or share her family's bounties. She always gave so much of herself without asking for anything in return except friendship. Neddie loved to decorate and was always happy to help her friends and family members with their own home projects. She was always ready to help the less fortunate, particularly during Thanksgiving and Christmas and, as best as she could afford, tried to make someone else's suffering more bearable. She loved to play racquetball, go biking in the long spring late afternoons and visit relatives and friends. She enjoyed sewing, creating wonderful desserts, listening to all those fabled Motown Classics and supporting the Dallas Cowboys. She took pleasure in making the Pecos High School All Sports Banquet a great success and was always an active volunteer in all school functions, particularly those related to sports. Neddie was the luckiest person in the whole world. She had it all, the best husband, the best daughters, the best family, the best friends who she adored and the best town to live in. Neddie was the best friend a person would ever want. She truly cherished her friends and loved to simply share happy moments with them. She leaves behind many wonderful memories as everyone who knew her was touched in a positive way by her wonderful joy of living. Neddie was the number one sports fan and team booster in Texas. She was always ready for those legendary out-of-town trips to support the home team. She and her dear friends would load up their vehicles and caravan to many near and distant destinations for an always-important game. The simple pleasure of being together as their steel chariots ate up hundreds of Texas miles is what made Neddie and her comrades in sports so happy, always planning, strategizing and discussing the strengths and weaknesses of the opposing team. But no matter what the outcome, she and friends were always ready for the next game and excursion there, to wherever that might be. It should not be a surprise, therefore, to know that dear Neddie, immediately after surviving radical heart surgery, and still in the ICU at Odessa Medical Center, inquired of her visiting friends as to what the score was in the Presidio and Pecos baseball game. Indeed, she was the most loyal and best fan any team would ever have. Yes, Neddie came back home one last time. Neddie was preceded in death by her mother, Mariela Calif Vasquez, in 1963. Neddie will be greatly missed. She is survived by her husband, Mike Molinar of Pecos; daughters, La Crisha Molinar Zapien and husband, Mario Zapien, of Alpine and Dee Dee Molinar of Alpine; by her father, Baltazar Vasquez of Pecos; by her parents-in-law, Delma Molinar and husband, Raul Molinar, of Pecos; by her sister-in-law, Monette Molinar and Frank Hernandez of San Angelo, Texas; by her brother-in-law, Rene Molinar and wife, Belinda, of Odessa; by her grandson, Lane Zapien of Alpine; by her niece, Brittany Molinar and nephew, Quincy Molinar, of Odessa; by her half-sister, Hazel Herrera of Pecos; and her many beautiful friends and her adoptive families of the Dominguez and Vasquez. A rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 13, at the Pecos Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 14, at the Santa Rosa Catholic Church with Father Ben Flores officiating, graveside service following in Mount Evergreen Cemetery.
