Parkey on a farm near the village of Blake, Okla., in Greer County. She passed away Tuesday, June 17, 2003, in San Angelo. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, in Plainview Cemetery in Plainview with Dr. Travis Hart officiating. When she was five years old her family, Mother, Dad and two sisters, moved in a covered wagon to a ranch 30 miles west of Portales, N.M. As World War I progressed, her family moved back to Oklahoma and later moved to a farm in Floyd County, Texas, where Marie finished high school in Floydada. She then went to Wayland Baptist College and finished two years work. She met and married J. Oliver Bier on Aug. 25, 1929, in Plainview. Marie was a member of the First Baptist Church where she was very active teaching Sunday School classes for 29 years in Plainview. Oliver and Marie moved to San Angelo in 1988 and both became very active in Baptist Memorial Auxiliary where they both worked. They were also members of the Eastern Star. Marie also taught school for several years in Plainview. Oliver passed away March 28, 1994, in Baptist Memorial. Marie is survived by a daughter, Mary Marie and husband, Dick Robinson, of Georgetown; three grandchildren, Dr. John and wife, Sue Robinson, of Cincinnati, Ohio, Richard M. and wife, Alyson Robinson, of St. Louis, Mo., and a granddaughter, Mary Kay and husband, David Knoll, of Centerville, Ohio; nine great-grandchildren, Tanner, Katie and Julianna Robinson of Cincinnati, Ohio, Garrett, Austin, Connor and Logan Knoll of Centerville, Ohio, and Caroline and Evan Robinson of St. Louis, Mo.; one sister, Lena and H.V. Lynch; and a niece and two nephews. The family requests memorials to Baptist Memorial Center, Baptist Memorial Auxiliary or the First Baptist Church. MATTIE ELIZABETH BUNYARD Johnson's Funeral Home Mattie Elizabeth Bunyard died Saturday, June 14, 2003, in the Regency Nursing Home. Graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, in Fairmount Cemetery with the Rev. Jerry Roach officiating. Mattie was born on Dec. 29, 1913, in De Leon to Charles and Sara Blanton. Survivors include three sons, Bobby M. Bunyard, Jerry B. Bunyard and James G. Bunyard, all of San Angelo; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Mattie loved her family and friends and could not do enough to help them. She will be missed by all. Our family would like to give a heartfelt thanks to the Regency Nursing Home and staff. LES DAYHOFF Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home ABILENE - Les Dayhoff, 53, died Thursday, June 12, 2003, at his residence in San Angelo. Visitation is from 6-7 p.m. Monday, June 17, at the funeral home on Highway 277 South. Les was born Aug. 3, 1949, to George Wilkinson and Jean Leslie Jones Dayhoff in Haggerstown, Md. He was raised in a military family, graduated from Security Colorado High School, loved golfing, and graduated from Angelo State University with a BBA in Management. Les retired from the U. S. Air Force June 14, 1994, after 26 years of service to his country. He moved to San Angelo from Germany. Les married Sue Robison in San Angelo, Texas, on May 20, 2002. He worked for the Texas Workforce Commission as a career specialist. Les was predeceased by his father. Survivors include his wife, Sue, of San Angelo; his mother, Jean, of Tye, Texas; four sons, James Dayhoff, John Dayhoff and Charles Dayhoff, all of Colorado Springs, Colo., Jason Dayhoff of Red Oak, Texas; two daughters, Catherine Dayhoff of Washington and Michelle Sparks of McAllen, Texas; one stepson, Roy Neal of Dallas; one stepdaughter, Donna Gohn of Terrell, Texas; two stepsisters, Tami Gee of Oakley, Kan., and Shirley Weaver of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one stepbrother, Jerry McCloskey of Phoenix, Ariz.; and ten grandchildren. David Espitia, pastor of St. Ann Church in Colorado City, passed away on Friday, June 13, 2003. He was 49. Rosary service tentatively is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, June 16, at St. Ann's Church in Colorado City. Mass of the Resurrection will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 17, at St. Ann's Church in Colorado City. Following the funeral Mass, burial will be in the Priest's Section in Calvary Cemetery in San Angelo. Bishop Michael Pfeifer, OMI, will be the main celebrant of the Mass and Bishop Joe Vasquez of Houston will give the homily. David Espitia was born May 7, 1954, in Coleman, Texas, to Raymond Espitia Sr. and Juanita Cardenas Espitia. He was the sixth of 10 children born to the couple. After graduating from high school, one year later he joined the U.S. Navy. He was honorably discharged from the Navy after four years of service. He then joined the Brigettine Monks, a contemplative order, where he spent five years in their monasteries in Charleston, W. Va.; Woodside, Calif.; and Amity, Ore., where he took temporary vows. Later he joined a Brigettine Monastery in Puebla, Mexico, for three years where he taught philosophy. Fr. Espitia entered St. Mary's Seminary in Houston in 1989 for the Diocese of San Angelo, and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of San Angelo on May 21, 1994, at the Cathedral Church of the Sacred Heart in San Angelo. He served as Parochial Vicar at St. Anthony Church in Odessa from Aug. 1, 1994-July 1996; Parochial Administrator of St. Lawrence Church in Garden City from January-June 2000; and Pastor of St. Ann Church in Colorado City from July 2000 to the present. He served as Director of Vocations and Director of Seminarians of the Diocese of San Angelo from 1996-December 1999. He was a member of the Priests Personnel Board of the Diocese from 2001-present. Fr. David was preceded in death by his mother, Juanita Cardenas Espitia; three brothers, Porfie Espitia, Reyes Espitia and Roberto Espitia; and two sisters, Maria Espitia and Dorothy Espitia. He is survived by his father, Raymond Espitia Sr. of Coleman; and four brothers, Raymond Espitia Jr. and wife, Elvira, of Bangs, Texas, Joe Espitia and wife, Maria, of Fort Worth, Luciano "Jerry" Espitia and wife, Sammy, of Coleman, and Robert and Florence Espitia of Abilene. He also is survived by four sisters, Guadalupe Sanchez of Lake Elsenor, Calif., Mary Mendoza and husband, Cornelio, of Coleman, Gracie Gill and husband, Danny, of Abilene, Janey Gist and husband, James, of Dallas and Sylvia Salinaz and husband, Cipriano, of Coleman; and many nieces and nephews. BENJAMIN E HAIR Johnson's Funeral Home Benjamin E. Hair, 62, passed away on Saturday, June 14, 2003, at his home in San Angelo. Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 18, at Trinity Lutheran Church. Interment service will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Garden. Ben was born Oct. 29, 1940, to Ralph and Louise Hair in Chambersburg, Pa. He joined the United States Air Force in 1959, earning a Bronze Star in Vietnam and serving honorably for 27 years before his retirement at Goodfellow Air Force Base. Ben also was a caseworker at the State School in San Angelo until he retired in 2000. He is survived by his wife, Chris; three sons and one daughter, Michael and wife, Jenny, in Abilene, James and wife, Michelle, in LaMaddalena, Italy, Lisa and husband, Chris, in Temple and Timothy of San Antonio; and his brother, Mike and wife, Connie, in Chambersburg, Pa. His grandchildren are Katie, Maya, Sam, Amelia, Baili and Brenna. Numerous cousins, nieces and nephews in Chambersburg, Pa., and London, England, also survive him. RUTHIE MAE KNOTTS KEITH Heritage Funeral Home MENARD - Ruthie Mae Knotts Keith, 85, went to be with her Lord on June 16, after a long and brave battle with many health problems which she faced with grace and dignity. Service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, at First Baptist Church in Menard, the Rev. Steve Tompkins will officiate with interment in Cavness Cemetery in Mason County. She was born August 22, 1917, in Llano County, the only daughter of Isaac Benjamin and Launa Lmyra Johnson Knotts. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Milton "Jiggs" Knotts and William Knotts. She was married to E.E. "Bud" Keith in Mason County on March 5, 1934, and before his death in September, 1969 they had lived on a ranch near London after purchasing the property in 1960. She moved back to Mason in 1962 and worked for several years at the Mason Memorial Hospital. A devout Christian, Ruth was a member of the Baptist Church and had worked with the youth department and Women's Missionary Union most of her adult life. She had a talent and love for needlework of all types and enjoyed oil painting, gardening and especially her family. She made numerous quilts and afghans for all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Before her health failed, she loved to travel, especially on bus tours throughout the United States and into Canada. An avid gardener, she enjoyed the beauty of the Hawaiian Islands on her one trip there. She is survived by two daughters and a son, Dorothy Kerns of Menard, Gloria Blackard of San Antonio and Curtis Keith of Ruidoso, N.M.; a son-in-law and daughter-in-law, Bob Blackard of San Antonio and Evelyn Keith of Ruidoso; nine grandchildren, Steve and Linda Kerns, Scott and Jodi Kerns, Don and Stephanie Kerns, David and Bess Kerns, Jeffrey and Dana Blackard, Gregory and Stacy Blackard, Kelby Blackard, Marandy and David Warren and Chrissy and Rodney Munoz; and numerous great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters-in- law, Ruth Seevers of Mason and Dorothy Knotts of Brady; two brothers-in-law, J.W. and Ruby Keith of Mason and Raymond Dring of Aransas Pass; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. VELMA RUTH LLOYD Johnson's Funeral Home Velma Ruth Lloyd, 84, of San Angelo, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, in a local hospital. Mrs. Lloyd was born July 26, 1918, in McCullough County to Sam and Stella Vinson Cole. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, three sisters, her first husband, Elvin Ennis Knight in 1953, and later marrying Robert C. Lloyd on Jan. 23, 1954, he preceded her in death in 1999. Velma was a loyal and dedicated member of Edmund Blvd. Baptist Church where she was the oldest member and also a member of the Lydia Class. Survivors include two sons, Sam H. Knight and his wife, Lou, of Big Spring, and Robert M. Lloyd and Judy Doan of San Angelo; a daughter, Barbara Gayle Cooley of Florida; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Claude Cole of San Angelo. DAVID RICHARD MIDDLETON Robert Massie Funeral Home David Richard Middleton, 61, of San Angelo passed away Monday, June 16, 2003, in a local hospital. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 18, in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Richard was born Feb. 8, 1942, in San Angelo. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ronald Middleton; and two sisters, Linda Middleton and Peggy Patterson. Survivors are his wife of 42 years, Jennie L. CYNTHIA (CINDY) SUE OGDEN-CLANTON Johnson's Funeral Home On Sunday, June 15, 2003, the life of Cynthia "Cindy" Sue Ogden-Clanton was taken in a tragic motorcycle accident. Our beautiful and beloved daughter, sister, mother and "grandma" had lived a full and happy life. The love she had for family and friends will be greatly missed but will forever remain in our hearts and all of our wonderful memories together. Cindy was born July 18, 1955, in San Antonio, Texas, to the very proud Eldon and Ruth Ogden. She married Ronnie Clanton of Big Spring, Texas, on Dec. 22, 1982, who preceded her in death on July 9, 1999. Cindy graduated from Howard College in Big Spring, Texas, on Aug. 26, 1988, earning her degree in nursing. She worked for Dr. James E. Mathews at Malone-Hogan Clinic until May 2002 when she moved to San Angelo to attend Operating Room Tech. School at Howard College of which she just graduated in May 2003. Cindy is survived by her parents of San Angelo, Texas; her son, Toby Clanton and wife, Cassie, of Big Spring, Texas; her daughter, Tammy Clanton-Smith and husband, David, of San Angelo; two sisters, Cherie Flores and husband, Daniel Flores Jr., of San Angelo and Sharon Maher and husband, Wayne, of Mertzon; and three beautiful granddaughters, Jessica Lynn Franco, Taylor Sue Smith and Whitney Smith of Midland, Texas; one great-niece, Ashley Thomas of San Angelo; nephews, Doug Thomas, Ben Thomas, Daniel C. Petty, 68, of Granbury, formerly of Abilene, will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 16, at University Church of Christ here. David Bynum will officiate. Interment will be in Elliott-Hamil Garden of Memories, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home. Mr. Petty died Thursday, June 12, 2003, in a Fort Worth hospital. He was born June 12, 1935, in San Angelo to John William and Kate Menielle Petty. A 1953 graduate of San Angelo High School, he attended Abilene Christian (College) University, graduating in 1957. He also did graduate work at Texas Tech University and Texas A&M University, getting his doctorate there in 1980. He was on the faculty at Abilene Christian University from 1977-90. Mr. Petty was married to Bobbye Draper of Tahoka in 1957 and she survives him. The Pettys made their home in Abilene, where they were members of Hillcrest Church of Christ from 1977-May 2002 when they moved to Granbury. He was a member of Granbury Church of Christ and also is survived by one daughter, Menielle, and her husband, Tommy Donahoo, and one granddaughter, Cori Donahoo, all of Granbury. Other survivors are two brothers and their wives, Bernard and LaVerne Petty of San Angelo and Bill and Donna Petty of Waco; one nephew, James William Petty of Brady; and three nieces, Kimberly Coleman of San Angelo, Krista Bates of Plano and Kate Dalton of Little Rock, Ark. Joy was born Feb. 9, 1926, in Ozona, Texas, to Fleet and Cora Coates. She graduated from Ozona High School and attended TCU in Fort Worth. In 1946 she married Phillip Schneemann and to the marriage three children were born, Phyllis Burris of Silver City, N.M., Lynda Powell of Alpine, Texas, and Stephen Schneemann of Iraan, Texas. Joy was survived by her husband, Phillip, their three children, and sons-in-law, Tink Burris and Richard Powell. ROBERT LAWRENCE WATTERS Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home ABILENE - Robert Lawrence Watters, 92, died Sunday, June 14, 2003. Robert was born June 10, 1911, in Menard, Texas, to Milton Robert Watters and Cora Annie Leona Burleson Watters. When he was 16 months old, his family moved to Kimble County, Texas, where he would grow up in ranching, raising registered Angora goats and registered sheep. Robert graduated from London High School in 1932. He met Elsie Irene Eckert, a school teacher, and they were married on Dec. 27, 1936, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Mason, Texas. They were blessed with the birth of their daughter, Roberta, in 1941. They continued to live and work on the ranch during World War II, raising mohair and other commodities necessary for the war. In 1948, they bought their farm in McCullough County, which they sold last year. During the drought in 1953, Robert worked for Central Texas Telephone in Melvin when telephones were first being installed in the rural communities. In 1956, the family moved to San Angelo where he worked for Lone Star Gas Company (TXU) and retired in 1973. During his retirement, Robert did carpenter work and woodworking as well as managing the farm, which was his passion. He was a Master Carpenter, constructing both houses and furniture. Robert could repair anything. In 1990, he and his wife moved to Abilene to be near his daughter. Robert continued his woodworking, gardening, fix-it, and bird feeding hobbies. He also helped his daughter manage rental property. Robert and his wife celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in 2002. He was active in AARP and Zion Lutheran Church. Robert was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, David Ventis Watters and Milton R. Watters Jr.; and a sister, Georgia Ella Robbins. Survivors include his wife, Elsie Watters of Abilene; a daughter, Roberta Watters of Abilene; and a sister, Minnie Retta Myers of Beeville, Texas. MICHAEL WILLIAMS Johnson's Funeral Home Michael Williams, 53, of San Angelo, passed away Thursday, June 5, 2003, in San Angelo. Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Michael was born Nov. 20, 1949, in Seymour, Texas, to Billy H. Williams and Hazel Copeland. He worked as a roughneck in the Petroleum Industry most of his life. Michael was also a machinist in the United States Marines and served two tours in the Vietnam War. He married Sandra Kidder on March 4, 1972, in El Paso, Texas, and they enjoyed 31 beautiful years together. Michael enjoyed playing pool and fishing but mostly just being with his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Danny and Randol Williams; and a sister-in-law, Kathleen Kidder Williams. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 15, in the Resthaven Cemetery in Menard, Texas, followed by memorial service at 2 p.m. at the Calvary Episcopal Church in Menard, Texas, with the Rev. Monty Jones officiating. John was born Dec. 27, 1910, on Rancho Escondido, the family ranch in Menard County, to early Menard County settlers, Robert S. Winslow and Edith Black Winslow, and was the youngest surviving child and only surviving son of six children. John graduated from Austin High School and from Texas A&M University in 1932 with a bachelor's degree in Animal Husbandry and commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army Calvary. While at A&M, John was honored to be selected captain of his troop, captain of the Ross Volunteers and ring master of the annual school rodeo. After graduation, he returned to Menard County to continue ranching and married Mamie Wellington Mears on Aug. 5, 1934. To this marriage were born three children. John was called to active duty during World War II in 1942, reporting to the Weapons Department, Fort Riley, Kan., where for two years he was instructor of small arms and weapons up to the size of the 155 mm Howitzer. He also instructed in village fighting and was promoted to the rank of captain. He received orders to join the armada forming in England and landed June 8, 1944, in Normandy. He was honorably discharged from the service and returned in 1945 to his family in Texas to continue his lifelong passion, ranching. In addition to ranching, John served as Mayor of Menard 1948-50 and Menard County Judge from 1959-71 and participated in the creation of the Menard retirement home. John was a lay reader and lifelong member of the Calvary Episcopal Church of Menard. A past master at Fort McKavett, Texas, John was a 65-year mason and was to be eligible to receive his 70-year pin on June 24 of this year. John was known for his sense of fairness and particularly thoughtful of others in time of grief and sent many private donations and encouragement to organizations. John will be well remembered for his great interest in how our tax dollars were spent and expressed his opinions often in the Menard News. He was a charter member of the Menard Historical Society in the early 1960s and the Edwards Plateau Historical Association in 1962. He worked to get the Santa Fe Depot for the Menard Museum and the Menard Bicentennial Celebration in 1974. He was a charter member of the A.H. Murchison Barn and served on the Board of Directors from 1953 through 1991. In 1950, he trained 4-H Rifle and Grass Judging Teams and was active in the 4-H Club, providing guidance for all the youth in activities from shooting instruction to animal husbandry. John was presented the First Friend of 4-H Award in 1994 for going the extra mile to support the 4-H youth program. For many years he ran the Menard drive-in theatre for Mr. and Mrs. Henry Reeve and was the foreman of the J.B. Ranch near Fort McKavett. John was preceded in death by his wife, Mamie Wellington Mears Winslow, who died Nov. 15, 1979. He is survived by two sons and one daughter, John M. Winslow Jr. of Kerrville, Robert Keith Winslow and wife, Cathy, of Kerrville and Diane Wellington Winslow Weniger and husband, Gunther, of Menard. He is remembered fondly by his longtime friend, Mary O. Points. He is survived by grandchildren, John Scott Winslow, Keith Black Winslow, Diane Winslow Weniger Watson, Regena Christine Winslow and Reagan Keith Winslow. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Ian Alexander Winslow, Casey Matthew Hill, Montgomery Keith Winslow, Riley Kate Watson and Lindsey Marie Watson. ELMER CHARLES "PETE" PETERS Kerbow Funeral Home ELDORADO - Elmer Charles "Pete" Peters passed away on Friday, June 13, 2003. Pete was born in Nashotah, Wis., to Elmer A. and Anna Peters on Oct. 18, 1921. He was stationed in the Eldorado area while serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II. During his stay here, he met his future wife, Frances Thompson. They married in January 1946 and made their first home in Wisconsin for a short period. They returned to Eldorado in 1947 and have lived there since that time. Pete began working as an automobile mechanic, then owned and operated the Chevrolet Agency from 1955-60. From 1960 until his retirement in 1990, he was in the insurance and real estate businesses. Pete believed in contributing to his community. He was a member of the Eldorado Volunteer Fire Department for 12 years. He served as a member of the City Council, and was president of the Chamber of Commerce from 1964-68. During that time he played an active role in establishing the Schleicher County Rural Hospital District and served on that board for 12 years. In 1967 he was recognized as an Outstanding Civic Leader in America. One of his great loves was supporting and working with the youth of Eldorado. He coached Little League for eight years and was president of the Eldorado Booster Club for two years. Pete was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he served on the Administrative Board, served as Sunday School Superintendent, taught a youth Sunday School class and was sponsor of the Methodist Youth Fellowship with Frances. He continued to grow in his faith by participating in the Walk to Emmaus and enjoyed his fellowship with others in that group and his Bible Study group. Pete is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Frances; daughter, Kay Heflin and her husband, Neal, of Acworth, Ga., and their children, Whitney Moss of Greensboro, N.C., and Scott Heflin of Knoxville, Tenn.; and his former daughter-in-law, Lesa Ritter and grandsons, Dustin Peters and Ross Peters, all of Lubbock.
