Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, June 21, in the Salvation Army Chapel in San Angelo or from 7:30-9 p.m. at the family home. Graveside service officiated by Captain Mike and Captain Karen Anderson will be at 7:45 a.m. Sunday, June 22, at the family ranch near Paint Rock. Nancy Brosig was born a first generation descendant of Russian and Czech immigrants on Dec. 6, 1941, to Emil and Annie Urban on the family farm at Lowake. She graduated from Miles High School and attended San Angelo Junior College. In 1961, she married Joe Carver Brosig II at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Miles. The couple owned and operated the Chaparral Ranch in Concho County for 39 years and the Chaparral Ranch Bed and Breakfast for more than 12 years at their home near Paint Rock. Nancy was also an avid bird-watcher, naturalist and dedicated sheep rancher. A longtime member of the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association, Nancy became one of the first women directors in 1982 and continued in that position until illness forced her retirement. She served as both Republican Party County Chairman and election official for 20 years. She was greatly responsible for Concho County having a two-party system. Nancy was also an active member of the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Concho Co. Hospital. Being born and having lived and died in Concho County, she offered many years of dedication to these organizations, as well as unnamed others that will leave an indelible impression for years to come. She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include husband, Joe Carver; two daughters, Renee Farmer of San Angelo and Leah Brosig Walston of Seguin; sons-in-law, Tom Farmer, Don Walston and Duane Schniers. Grandchildren include Justin, Corey and Marina Farmer of San Angelo and Joseph, Austin and Lorie Kaye Schniers of Seguin and Paint Rock. Siblings include Bessie Arthur, Pauline and Bill Dusek, Edwin Urban, James Urban, Henry and Laura Urban and William and Stella Urban. Extended family includes local in-laws, Sweetie and Benny Willberg, Ceda and E.H. Brosig and Al Waters; and numerous wonderful nieces, nephews and cousins. Special friends include Carl and Jeanette Wilde and family, John Wright and family, Hank Green and Dee Dee Pearson. (ret.) James W. "Jim" Burks, 73, passed from this life to his heavenly home Tuesday, June 17, 2003. A rosary was said at 7 p.m. Friday, June 20, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 21, at Holy Angels Catholic Church, with the Most Rev. Charles Greenwell officiating. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Jim was born Feb. 22, 1930, in Abilene, Texas, to Walter and Lillie Burks. After high school, Jim enlisted in the Air Force in 1947, beginning a military career of 26 years in various parts of the world, including Germany, Japan, Korea and the United States. Jim served two tours of duty in DaNang and Binn Thuy, Vietnam, before retiring from military service in 1973. Jim received the Bronze Star while serving his second tour of duty in Vietnam. In 1953, Jim met and married Teresa Marie Lewis in Honolulu, Hawaii. Teresa, his beloved wife of 49 years, preceded him in death in May of 2002. After retiring from the Air Force, Jim worked at Goodfellow Air Force Base in civil engineering until 1986 and served several terms on the board of directors of 1st Community Federal Credit Union. His retirement from civil service allowed Jim and Teresa time to travel with the Good Sam's Club, participate in N.A.R.F.E. activities and deliver Meals for the Elderly. Jim is survived by a son, James H. Burks and wife, Joy Bell, of Kaysville, Utah; a daughter, Marie T. Miller and husband, Clayton, of San Angelo; a daughter, Cecilia A. Janicata and husband, Jerry, of San Angelo; four grandchildren, Elizabeth B. Bailey and husband, Terry, of Montgomery, Ala., Lauren M. Harris and Brittany A. ED DAVENPORT Heritage Funeral Home BRADY - Ed Davenport was a True Horatio Alger Story of a country boy from the small Texas community of Rochelle, Texas, who became a very successful businessman and an outstanding community leader who contributed both personally and financially to almost 100 percent of the Brady civic organizations. Ed was born in Rochelle, Texas, on June 15, 1923. He passed away at his home on Wednesday, June 18, 2003. He had been in bad health for the past several months, but had never lost his sense of humor or his interest in what he enjoyed. Every day he would want to know about the rain, the livestock, the crops and the truck lines. He kept mentioning that he wanted to get back on his big tractor and help plow the fields. Ed served twice as Mayor of Brady and recently the Brady City Council voted to rename the Brady Civic Center as the Ed Davenport Civic Center. He was Mayor of Brady when the Civic Center was built and served again in more recent times. As an active golfer for many years, he recently contributed $50,000 to the City of Brady to secure an irrigation well for the golf course expansion project. The family will receive visitors from 7-8 p.m. Friday, June 20, at Heritage Funeral Home. Service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at the First Christian Church, with Dr. John Stewart officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery. Ed had a great work ethic and never lost his faith. He had a great spirit and ambitions. He started out with one truck and courage. He now has a large fleet of sand hauling trucks. He began with a few acres of land and accumulated several farms and ranches. Ed was a shareholder and director of the Commercial National Bank. He served as representative for Brady on the Concho Valley of Governments for five years and was successful in getting help for McCulloch County and Brady. In 1983, the governor asked him to serve on the Texas Mayor's Advisory Committee. He was also active in the Texas Thoroughbred Association and the North American Limousine Association. Ed had received awards from the Salvation Army and was recognized for his strong support of the West Texas Boys Ranch and West Texas Rehab. He supported the 4-H and Livestock Show and was a member of the American Legion, Lions Club and The Texas Motor Transportation Association. He helped with the Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society. Ed also served on the board of the July Jubilee Association for many years. Ed was a leader in the field of privately owned Federal Detention Centers. His centers became exemplary centers. The Federal Government sent all of the prospective jail investors to Ed's centers to show them what the government expected in their prison facilities. Ed's first wife, Madeleine Guyton Davenport, died in 1990, and he then married Saundra Ruffin on May 12, 2001, at their residence on West 6th Street. He was also a World War II veteran who served in the United States Army. He is survived by his wife, Saundra and stepdaughter, Taunya Myavik and husband, Josef, of Brady. Other survivors include his deceased wife's niece and nephew, Lynda Broad of Temple and Bert Broad of Brady; Bert's two daughters, Lacy Broad of San Angelo and Christina Bunch and husband, Charlie, and their son, Hunter Bunch of Eldorado; and cousins, Ike and Sonny Davenport of Brady and Johnny Davenport of San Antonio. Ed is also survived by a special relative, Randal and Jan Boatright, who was also one of his closest friends. Mr. Hamby was born June 4, 1924, in San Angelo to Milos and Lucy Hildreth Hamby. He was a United States Navy Air Corp veteran of World War II and a member of the Methodist Church. He operated Continental Water System for over 30 years. Mr. Hamby was married to Peggy Hagerty on May 3, 1948, in San Angelo. STEVE HAYES Robert Massie Funeral Home Steve Hayes, 46, of San Angelo, passed away Saturday morning, June 21, 2003, in Southwest Memorial Hospital in Houston, after suffering a heart attack. Steve was born May 6, 1957, in San Angelo and was a construction superintendent, working for Consolidated Contractors at the time of his death. He married Jean Stevens on Dec. 31, 1981, in San Angelo. Steve devoted his life to his wife, children and grandchildren and will be greatly missed. Charles was born March 10, 1915, in Vaughan, Texas. He married Clairine Rich on Dec. 23, 1945, in Tyler, Texas. DAVID G MURRAY David G. Murray, age 83, passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at his home in Spring, Texas. David was born in Santa Rita, N.M., on June 4, 1919, to Geo P. and Delores (Doll) Murray. He graduated from Iraan High School, Iraan, Texas, Class of '37. After serving with the Air Force during World War II, he worked in the Middle East, later to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, working for offshore drilling company as maintenance superintendent, retiring to College Station, then to Michigan, back to Spring, Texas. He loved to travel. David was preceded in death by his grandparents, W.O. and Alice A. Gann, pioneer ranchers at Leaday, Texas; his parents, Geo P. and Delores Murray, pioneer of the booming oil fields. He is survived by his loving wife, Consuela; three beloved daughters and their husbands, Mary D. and Ivor Hernandez of Ashburn, Va., Leann and Sean Pipkins of Portage, Mich., and Patricia Murray of Spring, Texas; two beloved grandchildren; one sister, Ruth M. CAROL ANN REINDERS Johnson's Funeral Home Carol Ann Reinders, 61, of San Angelo, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2003, in San Angelo. Carol Ann was born Nov. 11, 1941, in San Angelo to Henry A. Reinders and Adelia Hoelscher. She lived most of her life at Bethphage and enjoyed the work she did for MHMR. Carol Ann was preceded in death by her parents and one sister. She is survived by her loving family, brother, Maynard Reinders of San Angelo; sister, Jerline Weishuhn of San Angelo; one nephew, Gary Weishuhn of Paint Rock; two nieces, Carol Jean Holtman of San Angelo and Janet Hayes of Preston, Iowa; one brother-in-law, Sherman Braman of Preston, Iowa; and many special friends at Bethphage. BIRDIE LEE (DYKES) STEVENSON ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Birdie Lee (Dykes) Stevenson, age 72, passed away peacefully in her sleep early Tuesday morning, June 17, 2003. She was born Aug. 14, 1930, in San Angelo, Texas, the daughter of J.I. and Ernestine Dykes. Birdie graduated from San Angelo High School in 1947. She went on to receive her associate's degree from San Angelo College. On Feb. 17, 1952, she was united in marriage to Robert O'Neil Stevenson, who she met while working at the First Presbyterian Church in San Angelo. Robert was in the Unites States Air Force at the time and they moved to Savannah, Ga., where their daughter, Beverly, was born. They moved to Kalamazoo, Mich., where son, Richard, was born, and eventually settled in Ann Arbor, Mich., where sons, Thomas and Scott, were born. Besides her husband and four children, Birdie is survived by eight grandchildren, five great- grandchildren and two sisters, Ester Behrend of San Angelo, Texas, and Laura O'Neal of Huntsville, Ala. Birdie was a volunteer for many years at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and the First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor. She also loved to work in her flowerbeds at home, play bridge and spend time with her family. Birdie enjoyed the company of many devoted friends and family and will be lovingly remembered by all. Visitation was held in the Muehlig Funeral Chapel on Thursday in Ann Arbor. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor. JESSIE "PARKER" VILLERS Johnson's Funeral Home Jessie "Parker" Villers, age 82, of San Angelo, died early Thursday morning, June 19, 2003, in a local hospital. She was born on Aug. 29, 1920, in Concho County to Caleb and Callie Sparks. Jessie had been a nurse and a homemaker, with a great love for children. Her survivors include her husband, Willard "Bill" Villers; children, Maxine Whitesell and husband, Don, Nadine Hughes and husband, Donnie, Peggy Hawkins and husband, Charles, Beryl Parker and wife, Cathy, Bobby Parker, Jerry Parker and wife, Rhonda, Jimmy Villers and wife, Brenda, and Peggy Liebo and husband, Harold; 26 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and brother, Theo Sparks, all of San Angelo; and brother, Walter Sparks of Tulsa, Okla. Jessie was preceded in death by her husband, Beryl F. Parker; parents; and a son, James Alvin Parker. Wood died June 21, 2003, in Shannon Medical Center. He was a member of the Lake View United Methodist Church. His Lodge affiliation was Masonic Lodge No. 570. Graveside service will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, in Lawnhaven Cemetery, with the Rev. June White, Lake View UMC, officiating. Jack was born to Bill and Elsie Wood on June 11, 1924, in Elgin, Comanche County, Okla. He attended schools at Harmony School and Fletcher School. His older brother, Raymond, died in November 1941, and his dad died in December 1941. The family then moved to Lawton, Okla. He worked at the Fort Sill Army Base. Near the beginning of World War II, Jack joined the Army in 1942. After his basic training, he served in England and Germany with the medical Corps. He attained the rank of Army Sergeant. He married Charleene Snyder July 13, 1947, in Walter, Okla. In March 1947, they moved to San Angelo, Texas, where he sold and installed siding, windows and screens; in and around San Angelo. Jack was an entrepreneur and a hard worker who took pride in his work. He began the JACK WOOD COMPANY in 1950, where he made aluminum windows and screens. Charleene worked with him in the business. He taught his son, Andrew, to build windows and how to run the business. At an early age, Jane was learning to make screens. He taught his children to take pride in their work. The family worked together, but also played together; they enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing. He taught Jane and Andrew the value of life. In late 1970, Jack bought a ranch near Robert Lee and Nipple Peak Ranch. He enjoyed plowing his fields and taking care of his cattle. He loved gardening, planting bluebonnets, and observing the wildlife on the ranch. Jack loved his toy fox terrier dogs. A special love of his life were his grandchildren, Jarrod, Jimmy and Juli. Jack lost his wife, Charleene, to cancer in November 1994. He was a diabetic, lost his eyesight and had been in poor health since 1995. He was preceded in death by his wife, Charleene; parents, Bill and Elsie Wood; brother, Raymond Wood; and stepfather, Belton Stallings. He is survived by his son, Andrew, wife, Cissi and granddaughter, Juli Wood; daughter, Jane and husband, James Morrison and grandsons, Jarrod and Jimmy Morrison; a brother, Bill Wood of Ballinger; a sister, Joy and husband, Wade Roberts, of Moran, Texas; a special cousin, Helen Pate of Honolulu, Hawaii; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of friends. WILLIE ZUNIGA Johnson's Funeral Home Our brother, uncle and friend, Willie Zuniga went to be with his Lord on Sunday, June 15, 2003. His best friend and love, Cindy Clanton joins him in his journey. Willie was born on May 14, 1952, in Borger, Texas. He graduated from Bronte High School in 1970 and went on to complete his bachelor's and master's degrees in education at Angelo State University. He then committed his life to educating children. Beginning his career as a coach, Willie soon focused his energy on teaching the children of San Angelo art. He believed "that art can really save a lot of kids who would drop out of school otherwise," and that each student had some form of creative ability. Willie was intrigued with the role the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts plays in public art education and its affiliation with the San Angelo Independent School District. In 1994, he volunteered his time and talents to the remodeling efforts of the space at the Cactus Hotel, which became home to the Children's Art Museum. He was involved in SAMFA'S ARTIZ and Envision programs, which were designed for gifted junior high and senior high school students. He worked for San Angelo Independent School District for 20 years and leaves behind many special friendships. He gave of himself in many ways. He served on the Boards of Concho Resource Center, which helps the handicapped, and the San Angelo Cultural Affairs Council. He was a sports enthusiast and an avid Harley Davidson biker. Willie built his first motorcycle himself in his apartment while in college. He spent his summers touring the United States on his bike and made many lasting friendships.
