Rosary service will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 18, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Miles. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday, July 19, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Miles, followed by burial at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rowena. Elizabeth was born on Oct. 21, 1908, in Miles to Frank and Mary (Mohelnik) Schwertner. She married Robert Leander Beach on Dec. 30, 1929, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rowena. She was a farmer’s wife, homemaker, and worked outside the home doing factory work during the drought years on the farm. After retirement she was a caregiver to the elderly. She was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Miles and a member of St. Theresa Altar Society until moving to Arlington to live with her daughter in June of 1992. Her husband; son, Robert Beach; and son-in-law, Elgin Lange, preceded her in death. She is survived by son, Jerome Beach and wife, Martha, of Lubbock; daughter, Joan Beach Lange of Arlington; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren; sister, Clara Eggemeyer of Miles; and many nieces and nephews. IRENE GUZMAN CARRILLO Johnson’s Funeral Home Irene Guzman Carrillo, 59, of San Angelo was taken to be with our Lord on Saturday, July 12, 2003. The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, in Johnson’s Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Nathaniel Hankins officiating, followed by burial in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. She was preceded in death by parents, Prudencio and Mary Guzman; son, Tommy Govea; and sisters, Janelle Luna and Julia Fernandez. Irene is survived by her husband of 25 years, Antonio Carrillo; son, Jimmy Govea and wife, Linda; stepchildren, Margarito Carrillo, Antonio Carrillo and Juanita Shermo; grandchildren who loved her very much; brothers, Red Guzman, Pete Guzman, Frank Guzman and Bobby Guzman; sisters, Teresa Zapata, Elaine Hernandez and Norma Martinez; many nieces and nephews; and close family friend, Janelle Barron. Pallbearers will be John Fernandez, Rudy Palacios, Tony Guzman, Christopher Guzman, Alfredo Martinez and Julian Martinez, honorary pallbearers, Oscar Ornelas and Manuel Rangel. MARK CHAUMONT Johnson’s Funeral Home Mark Chaumont, 42, of San Angelo, died Friday, July 11, 2003, at his residence. Service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 15, in Johnson’s Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Mark was born July 7, 1961, in Brownwood, Texas, to Curley and Lolle Bellon Chaumont. Mark was a well-known and respected sound system manager or, as he liked to say, an “audio illusionist.” He was working with Tradewind Sound at the time of his death and had previously toured with Junior Brown, Lyle Lovett, The SWIGS, Ro-Tel and the Hot Tomatoes and Natalie and the Heartbreakers. He also mixed sound for performers Dwight Yoakum, Willie Nelson, George Strait, Bonnie Raitt, The Mavericks, Sawyer Brown, Hal Ketchum, Radney Foster and so many others. He also worked with a number of Tejano groups and artists and had a special love for various Latino sounds. He made many friends during his career and was one of the few who was able to do what he loved. Mark was married to Audrey Karcher on March 31, 2000, in San Angelo. His parents and his brother, Ricky, preceded Mark in death. Survivors include his wife, Audrey Chaumont of San Angelo; daughters, Alicia and Katie Karcher of San Angelo; sisters, Mary Mohler and husband, Jay, of San Angelo, Kay Hewitt and husband, Joe, of Christoval and Susie Chaumont of Austin; brothers, Jim Chaumont and wife, Lisa, of San Angelo and Mike Chaumont and wife, Pam, of Fort Worth; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mark will be missed by all those who love him. DAVID BRUCE CLEVELAND Sanders Funeral Home LUBBOCK — David Bruce Cleveland, 50, of Lubbock, passed away suddenly and all too soon on July 12, 2003. David was born in Dallas on Jan. 27, 1953. He graduated from L.D. Bell High School in Bedford in 1971. He continued his education at Stephen F. Austin and Texas Tech University, graduating with degrees in business administration in 1976 and accounting in 1980 and was also a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. After graduation, Davis was hired by Best Products and worked his way up to store manager. In his 20 year career at Best, he made many close friends of both employees and customers alike. On June 11, 1977, David married the love of his life, Becky Canada, in San Angelo, Texas. They had three children, Ashley, Chase and Cory, all of Lubbock. David doted on his family and was very involved in their athletic endeavors. He coached his children and many, many others in sports such as Lubbock Soccer Association, Southwest Little League, MOB Basketball and West Texas Select Baseball. David also was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends and family. David is survived by his wife and children; his parents, Austin and Alice Lynne Cleveland; sisters, Alice Bien and Susan Anduss; and seven nieces and nephews. Also, Mrs. Bernice Canada, mother-in-law; and brothers-in-law, Rick Canada, Ken Canada and their families. Pallbearers will be Jon Canada, Kris Canada, Jim Henley, Wayne Davidson, Mike Cloud, Larry Bien, Marc Anduss and Cory Carney. LUCIE LOPEZ DE LA ROSA Gutierrez Funeral Chapels/North Lucie Lopez De La Rosa, 44, of San Angelo and formerly of Albuquerque, N.M., passed away Friday, July 11, 2003, in a local hospital. Mass of Christian burial will be at 2 p.m. Monday, July 14, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. She will be cremated. Ms. De La Rosa was born Sept. 3, 1958, in San Angelo. Survivors include one son, Justin Rey and a daughter, Jackie De La Rosa, both of Albuquerque, N.M.; her mother, Patsy Lopez of San Angelo; three brothers, Tony Lopez, Daniel Lopez and Louis Price, all of San Angelo; five sisters, Amanda Hammad of Albuquerque, N.M., and Connie Romero, Elizabeth Martinez, Ramona “Mona” Rangel and Lydia Pena, all of San Angelo. Lucie was a soldier of the Lord, who has soared like an eagle to her new peace forever. She served us loyally as a daughter, sister, mother and friend. She devoted herself to helping and caring for others. Lucie provided everyone with all her love and advice, while opening her home to those in need. All of her pain and grief is over, but if you listen with your heart, you will hear her and feel all of her love around you. HUBERT J DRGAC Johnson’s Funeral Home Hubert J. Drgac, 73, of Veribest, died Monday, July 14, 2003, in a local hospital. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 18, in Johnson’s Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tommy Tallas and the Rev. Mr. Drgac was born into a large family on Jan. 30, 1930, in Cookes Point, Texas, to Walter J. Drgac and Anna Langer Drgac. In 1936, they moved to the Wall-Veribest area. During his childhood, he suffered many hardships, starting with the loss of his mother and a brother at the age of six. He grew up working on the farm and milking cows to help keep the family going. He entered the Air Force in 1951 and was discharged early due to the loss of another brother, Albert, in 1952. In 1953, he married Noemi Helen Michalik and they began farming and raising a family of four sons. Hubert was a strong influence in bringing innovative ideas in farming to the area. He was also active in many organizations. He served on the board of directors of the Texas Farm Bureau as well as being the president of RVOS Lodge No. 25 and SPJST Insurance for a number of years. Hubert was also a member of the Wall Volunteer Fire Department, Wall Young Farmers and the Czech Heritage Society. He will be greatly missed by family members, children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. JAMES L ETIER Johnson’s Funeral Home After a courageous battle with cancer, James L. Etier Sr., 76, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 12, 2003. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 15, in the Barnhart Cemetery in Barnhart with the Rev. H.L. Stevens, of Dumas, officiating. Mr. Etier was born in Warm Springs, Va., on June 8, 1927. He married Madine “Boots” Welch on Dec. 4, 1945. She preceded him death in 1996. Mr. Etier lived in Dumas until 1971. He moved to Barnhart in 1980 and lived there until 1997, when he moved to San Angelo. He married Evelyn Klaus on May 13, 1997, in San Angelo. He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter; his sister; and brother. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Binni and Lee Haney of Mertzon and Alpha and Randy Yocham of San Angelo; one son and daughter-in-law, James L. and Tammy Etier Jr. of Norwalk, Calif.; seven grandchildren; two stepdaughters, Paula Borne and John of New Orleans, La., and Linda Braswell of Brandon, Miss.; two stepsons, Charles Branch, Richard and Jerry Lynn Branch of Navarra, Fla. ALICE PARRA GARCIA Licha went to be with the Lord at 3:20 a.m. Friday, July 11, 2003, in Riverside Health Care. She was born on April 2, 1921, to Jesus and Jesusita Parra. Licha is survived by her husband of 56 years, Lupe; two sons, David and Norma Garcia of Austin and Lupe Ray and Valerie Garcia; grandchildren, Elaine and Diana of Austin, Andrew, Leticia and Allison of San Angelo, Eugene and Amanda of Germany and Ray of North Carolina; and two great-grandchildren, Ashley of San Angelo and Isaiah of Germany. BURMA LEE HODGES Johnson’s Funeral Home Burma Lee Conner Sanders Hodges passed away on Monday, July 14, 2003, after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 61. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 17, in Johnson’s Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Burma was born June 27, 1942, in Breckenridge, Texas, to J.W. “Dub” and Lill Martin Conner. She married Ron E. Hodges on Oct. 20, 1978. She worked for Nelson’s Department Store in the early ‘60s and then worked for Ethicon in 1964 where she retired after 29 years. After retirement, she maintained the computer systems for the West Texas Boys Ranch for several years. Burma is survived by her daughter, Susan Sanders Howell and husband, Walter “Buda,” and their daughters, Royal of San Angelo and Raina Gutierrez and husband, Mike, of Marana, Ariz.; stepdaughter, Rhonda Hodges Martin and husband, David, and their children, Ryan and Randi of Midland; nephew, Tim Conner and wife, Teresa, and family of Abilene; and many extended family that reach from El Paso, Breckenridge, Haskell County and beyond. She was preceded in death by her first husband, W.L. “Bud” Sanders; infant son, W.L. Sanders Jr.; brother, Sammie Conner; parents, Dub and Lill Conner; and her beloved husband, Ron Hodges. Bob was married to Donna Thomas on June 20, 1953, in Gardenia, Calif. He was a welding engineer and was a member of Belmore Baptist Church. MARY LOUISE DODD LUMBLEY Robert Massie Funeral Home Mary Louise Dodd Lumbley passed from this life on Wednesday, July 16, 2003, following a lengthy illness. Mary was born in San Angelo, Texas, on July 9, 1929, and had resided in San Angelo all of her life. Family visitation will be held from 6-7 p.m. Friday, July 18, at Robert Massie Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 19, in the Robert Massie Riverside Chapel, with Pastor Lakan Mariano, of the College Hills Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Mary graduated from San Angelo High School and from Draughon’s Business College in Abilene, Texas. After graduation, Mary worked in the accounting offices for M System Food Stores and later in the offices of Trend Furniture. Mary began a career in real estate in 1976 and was a well-known local realtor until her retirement in 1998. Mary served on the Board of Local Realtors and in 1993, was president of the San Angelo Association of Realtors. Mary received many awards and much recognition for her work as a realtor. Mary was also an active member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority for more than 40 years and was a member of Trinity Methodist Church and later attended College Hills Baptist Church. Mary married W.O. Dodd Jr. in September 1948 in San Angelo. W.O. preceded her in death in August 1975. Mary later married Sid L. Lumbley in August 1980. Mary is survived by her husband, Sid Lumbley of San Angelo; daughter, Kathryn Moseley and husband, Stephen, of San Angelo; son, Bill Dodd and wife, Stephanie, of Sugarland, Texas; stepson, David Lumbley of Dallas, Texas; sister, Lora Lee Fox of Aransas Pass, Texas; niece,Denise Fox and husband, Flip Burleson, of Aransas Pass, Texas; grandchildren, Michael Pool of San Angelo, and Nicholas Dodd and Billy Dodd of Sugarland, Texas; and step-grandchildren, Logan Moseley, David Lumbley, Laura Dodson and Ryan Lumbley, all of Dallas, and Mike Lumbley of Austin. JUNE MCDONALD Moore-Rose-White Funeral Home LOCKNEY — June McDonald departed this life at the age of 79 on Monday, July 14, 2003, in Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas. She was born on June 21, 1924, in Summerfield, Texas, to the late Budley Thorton and Bertha Moore Thorton. She moved to Lockney in 1925. She married Wayne Bybee and had two children. He preceded her in death in October of 1958. She married Robert McDonald on July 16, 1983. She worked at the bank in Lockney for 45 years and served as the vice president until she retired in 1989. She was a member of the Eastern Star, B&PW, V.F.W. Auxiliary and was the Woman Citizen of the Year in Lockney. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Lockney, having served as the church treasurer for 35 years. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Raymond, Orlan, J.P. and Hollis Thorton. June was a talented artist and creative craftsperson who enjoyed sharing her gifts. She loved being with her family and friends. Playing bridge and being a part of the Dairy Queen Girls were some of her fun things to do. After she married Robert, they began a fabulous life of loving, sharing and enjoying life together. They traveled to the Pacific Northwest and Canada. Robert and June traveled repeatedly to Taos, N.M. June’s love of her family and friends was unconditional and was felt by all who knew her. She is survived by her husband, Robert McDonald; one son, Monty Bybee and his wife, Cindy, of Eldorado, Texas; two stepsons, Marlon McDonald and his wife, Sherry, of Lockney, Gary McDonald and his wife, Clarisse, of Lubbock; one daughter, Tony Akin and her husband, Galen, of Christoval, Texas; one stepdaughter, Cathie Elam and her husband, Gary, of Mansfield, Texas; two brothers, Charles and Lewis Thorton, both of California; one sister, Mary Ruth Fewell of Lockney; and seven grandchildren. VIVIAN DORIS MIEARS Kerbow Funeral Home SONORA — Vivian Doris Miears, affectionately known as Vi or Viv, died of cancer Friday, July 11, 2003, in the Hudspeth Memorial Hospital in Sonora, Texas. She was born Aug. 1, 1941, in Sonora to Freeman and Irene Miears, who preceded her in death. Vivian graduated from Sonora High School in 1960 and was also a graduate of Draughon’s Business School in San Antonio. After graduating from Draughon’s, she worked as a bookkeeper at Page Drug in San Antonio for a year before returning to Sonora where she worked in accounting at Cameron’s Lumber Co., at the Sonora Veterinary Clinic and later at the Sonora Independent School District. For a few years, she left Sonora to work in Austin and in Irving with the Irving Independent School District. In 1987, she returned to Sonora and became the owner of Vivian’s Modern Way for more than 10 years. For the past six years, she enjoyed a successful career as manager of KHOS radio in Sonora. People often referred to her as the “voice of Sonora.” As the manager at KHOS, she was the top salesman for the past two years and had the opportunity to share her successes at a national conference in Tennessee last fall. She loved greeting people and helping them promote their businesses on the radio. Vivian was active in the community and served on the Sonora City Council for the past year and was a member of Hope Lutheran Church. She was active in the Sonora Mainstreet Program and served as its president for three years. Later, she was instrumental in organizing the Friends of Historic Sonora Mainstreet Program. She was also actively involved in initiating annual homecoming activities for Sonora High School. In brief, she loved Sonora and willingly devoted her time and energies to the community. Her sister, Dr. Elaine Roberson and her husband, George, of Trophy Club, Texas, and her brother, Royce Miears and his wife, Gloria, their daughter, Danielle Matthews of Sonora and their son, Bryce Matthews and his wife, Terri, of Aurora, Colo., survive her. Four aunts, Eloise Ahrens, Millie Cobb and Ellie Cobb of Kerrville and Margaret White of Blanco, as well as many cousins and friends also survive her. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to your favorite charity. HARTIE WEBB MOORE Johnson’s Funeral Home Hartie Webb Moore, 101, of San Angelo, passed away July 14, 2003, in San Angelo. Hartie was born June 10, 1902, in Evansville, Tenn., to H.D. Webb and Mattie Mize. She married Achilbald Eugene Moore in February of 1925. She was a homemaker most of her life and also worked for Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene and Baptist St. Anthony’s Hospital in Amarillo. Hartie loved to work in her garden and was known as “Mom” to all of her friends. She was preceded in death by her husband; one son-in-law, H.E. McCoy; and one grandson, Frank Kantro. ROY M RILEY Johnson’s Funeral Home Roy M. Riley, 87, of San Angelo, passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2003, in San Angelo. He was born Jan. 13, 1916, in Lutesville, Mo., to William A. Riley and Francis E. Whoney. Roy was raised as a farmer in a small farming community in Missouri, and he left to join President Roosevelt’s Civilian Conservation Corps where he worked for five years. After leaving the Corps, he moved to Ohio where he became a Steel Mill Fitter for E.W. Bliss and retired from there after 43 years with the company. Roy and his wife then moved to Texas to be with their family. (Jack) Roberts passed away at his residence in San Angelo, Texas, on July 11, 2003, from a heart attack. He was surrounded by the musical instruments that he loved. Bret was born on Aug. 25, 1963, in Corpus Christi, Texas. He attended school in San Angelo and graduated from Central High School in 1981. He also attended Angelo State University. Bret was a talented and well-respected musician. Throughout his school years, he was a member of the concert, marching and jazz bands. He loved playing his bass guitar in country bands, jazz groups, church services, musical productions and other venues. He was particularly excited about the future of his current band, Texas Rain. Bret received tremendous pleasure playing his tuba - especially the “happy” music with the Havlak-Batla Polka Band, and he also worked with Brian Thomas’s Sound Production Co. Bret was preceded in death by his father, Jack Roberts; his maternal grandparents, Allen Marshall and Elsie Adele Queen. She was born to Mary Patton West and Otis West on May 14, 1926, and lived in and around Paint Rock, Texas, her entire life. Gwen graduated from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas, with a bachelor’s of science in economics. She married Hilton H. Stephenson on Feb. 24, 1947. He preceded her in death in October 1969. They were blessed with three children, Bryan West Stephenson, Rebecca Jane Stephenson and Sharon Lynn Stephenson Taylor. Gwendolyn, or Gwen, as her friends knew her, began her career as a schoolteacher in Millersview, Texas, in 1955. Two years later, she became a teacher at Paint Rock High School where she taught government and business courses until her retirement in 1986. During her 31 years as a schoolteacher, she touched the lives of a generation of boys and girls, many of whom still reside in the Concho County area. “Teacher,” as she was known to all who attended her classes, was a caring, involved teacher dedicated to exposing her students to the workings of our democratic form of government and providing the students with the tools necessary to succeed in the world of business. After retirement, she continued her civic involvement as a board member for the Regional Advisory Committee on Aging, as well as past president of the Study Club and treasurer of the Cemetery Association. She enriched the lives of all those who came to know her. Her kindness and love will be missed. In addition to her three children, she is survived by six grandchildren, Brant Hilton, Bryan Austin, and Aradine Katherine Elizabeth Stephenson, Don Randall Taylor, Justin Travis Stephenson Miller and Kelly Miller Czapnik; and great-grandson, Christopher Marcus Czapnik. Joe was born in Klondike, Texas, on Jan. 17, 1917, to John Rusk and Sudie Whiteside Stooksberry. He served seven years in the AAF Air Force, earning the rank of staff sergeant. In World War II, Joe proudly served in the American Theater EAME in Algeria, French Morocca, Tunisia, Sicily, Naples, Foggia, Rome and Arno. He was awarded five bronze stars and the Good Conduct Victory Medal. On Dec. 24, 1946, Joe married Dorotha Wilson in Commerce, Texas. They have lived in San Angelo since 1947, and are members of Immanuel Baptist Church. Joe loved the outdoors, fishing and hunting. He always had a good fishing story to share with his family and friends.
