Pfc. Armstrong was born March 1, 1981, in San Angelo. During his sophomore year of high school, Travis enrolled at the Marine Military Academy, an all-boys boarding school affiliated with the Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps located in Harlingen, Texas. While at MMA, Travis was elected Cadet of the Month, Cadet of the Year for Delta Company and received the honor of Most Valuable Player for baseball. He attained the rank of Cadet Staff Sergeant. Travis returned for his senior year to Central High School in San Angelo. He excelled in athletics while a member of the Bobcat football and swimming teams, graduating in May 1999. Travis loved the outdoors. He had the opportunity to participate in the Colorado Outward Bound Program in Denver in July 1998 and received the coveted Leadership Pin given to those who completed the course and demonstrated the values of tenacity and undefeatable spirit and compassion. Travis was a member of the First United Methodist Church in San Angelo. He served as an usher with his dad and brother for many years. He was well-known for his faith and service to others. He attended Chrysalis No. 7 in 1996 and later served on a Chrysalis team and a Journey team. She grew up in the rural South, where the uniform of the day included bonnets, long dresses and calluses on their hands. She was a young lady when being seen and not heard was the norm. In the balance of her life, she, like many of her time, migrated from Southern Louisiana to Texas, where she ended up as the loving wife of Charlie Hamilton. Mom continued to grow spiritually and intellectually and in our ever-changing world, she became a wife, a mother, a homemaker and in the prime of her life, she became a pastor, accredited by the Pentecostal Church of God. She was a founding member and later the pastor of Carlsbad Pentecostal Church of God until her final retirement in 2000. Mom was certainly heard and seen by many of her friends and neighbors during that period of time. MARIA CHRISTINE McNEILL McMASTER Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home DALLAS — Christine McMaster was born on Jan. 8, 1911, in the West Texas town of Winchell to John Duncan and Hilda Atkins McNeill. While growing up, Christine and her family lived in Dublin, Texas, Sylvester, Texas, and Brownwood, Texas, where she finished high school. She attended Daniel Baker College, graduated from Howard Payne University and served as a graduate assistant at Howard Payne. After graduation from college, she became a schoolteacher and taught in Brownwood and San Angelo in West Texas. She married Archie V. (Vin) McMaster Sr. in 1941. Christine served the war effort as a “Rosie the Riveter” in the Convair aircraft assembly plant in Fort Worth. During her time at the plant, she often rode a bicycle to save time while getting to and from different assembly sites in the facility. Christine and Vin moved to Dallas in 1948, settling in University Park. She later taught in the Carrollton school district, and the Dallas Country Day, St. Marks and Hockaday Schools and as a substitute teacher in the Highland Park school system. Christine had many stories of her experiences with students — she was firm but fair, and never allowed what she called “flapping shirttails” in the hallways. Christine retired from teaching in the late 1960s, and leaves a legacy of contentment and caring in the knowledge that she made a difference in the lives of her family, and in the lives of the hundreds of students that she guided during her many years of teaching. Christine was preceded in death by her husband, Vin (Sr.); her parents; and her only brother, John D. McNeill of Saginaw, Texas. She is survived by her two sons, A. Vin McMaster Jr. of Dallas and John Lee McMaster of Garden City, Texas; daughter-in-law, Judy McMaster; granddaughter, Heather Alison McMaster of Banner Elk, N.C.; grandson, John Lloyd McMaster; great-grandson, Justin Lee McMaster of Garden City; her much loved sister-in-law, Mae McNeill of Saginaw, Texas; and her two nieces, Ms. Barbara Beerling of Fort Worth and Ms. Linda Stegall of Houston, Texas. The family gratefully acknowledges and appreciates the care and concern shown by the extraordinary staff at Walnut Place Nursing Home. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to your favorite charity in Christine’s memory would be appreciated. Funeral service will be at 12 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, in Sparkman/Hillcrest Northwest Hwy. Chapel. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park in Dallas. RUBILEE S NOBLE Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors ODESSA — Rubilee S. Noble, beloved mother, grandmother and friend, went to be with the Lord on July 19, 2003, after a brief illness in Austin. Certain people in this world have a way of making each of us feel special, and Rubilee Smith Noble was just such a person. This great story began on Jan. 14, 1920. As the first of two sisters born to Oscar and Betty Smith, she grew up in the early days of the oil business. Rubilee spent the formative years of her life making friends up and down Highway 80. Wherever her father drilled a well, you will likely find people who called her their “best friend.” Attending schools throughout West Texas, she graduated from Coahoma High School in 1938. She met and then married Ray Noble in 1942. After making another set of lifelong friends, while Ray served in the Army Air Corps, they started their family and settled down in Colorado City, which they and so many others would always call home. Living in Colorado City, she began what would be her lifelong interest in the theater and education. When her husband Ray died in 1965, Rubilee went back to school, eventually obtaining her masters degree in education. Relocating with her youngest child Betty to Odessa, she built a great life and career. Her hard work and love for “special children” pushed her forward through Ector County Independent School District to the position of supervisor of special programs, where her devotion for “her kids” was legendary. For her work in education, she received the Heritage Foundation Award for Education in 1991. Her formal retirement in 1986 only began a new chapter in her love for education, first as a private tutor and then serving on the board of the Hillcrest School in Midland. She remained fully involved in education all of her life. Her passion for the theater followed her from Colorado City to Odessa, active both as an actor and board member for The Permian Playhouse. She threw herself into such productions as Gypsy, Death of a Salesman, and Cheaper by the Dozen. She also was active in Mansion Dinner Theater, hosting many famous and infamous celebrities who visited Odessa during the Mansion’s run. She was committed to volunteerism, helping out at the Ellen Noel Art Museum, Odessa Regional Hospital and Meals on Wheels. A lifelong Presbyterian, she held most every office that a lay person can hold in the church. She was an elder, Sunday school teacher, and founder of the Working Woman’s Circle. She sang in the choir and served on any committee for which her help was requested. Perhaps her greatest role in life was her role as the glue that held her family together. And her greatest passion was always her family. Known as “Mami” to her nieces and nephews, “Nana” and “Grandma” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she was the devoted leader of the family. Always there to serve, entertain, house, clothe, feed or otherwise tend to any and all. Her three children, eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren, together with her nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews all looked to her as head of the family and will miss her greatly. She will be missed by her children, Shana Bassinger and husband, Hubert, Reggie Noble and wife, Roe, and Betty Starnes and husband, Mac; grandchildren Jana DeLoach, Raymond Bassinger, Reagon Noble, Natalee Noble, Derek Noble, Noble Starnes, Spencer Starnes and Raylee Starnes; and great-grandchildren, Seth Sanchez, Blake DeLoach, Haylee DeLoach, Brice Bassinger, Beric Bassinger, Brec Bassinger and Tripp Noble. To honor and celebrate her life, a graveside service will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, in Colorado City, and a memorial service at 4 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Odessa, with a reception following in the Fellowship Hall.
