After graduation, he worked as a ranch hand in Montana. He married Gwen Moore in 1970. At age 25, his neck was broken and from that time on — 30 years — he lived life as a quadriplegic. His courage and determination to live life to the fullest was shown by the completion, in 1980, of his BA degree from the University of Houston. The audience rose spontaneously in a standing ovation at his graduation. Being always an independent and outdoor person, he loved riding horses and rodeoing. Even after his injury he rarely missed a night of the San Angelo Rodeo. He had a great interest in Texas and family history. He was a great host, taking visitors to see interesting sights in San Angelo. He took many vacation trips. This was possible because of the loving care and devotion of his caregiver, Linda, and her children. Survivors include a brother, David Roberts of Round Rock; three sisters, Karen A. She was born on March 26, 1952, in Fort Stockton. Mahala attended public schools in Fort Stockton and Austin and private schools in Arizona and New Hampshire. An artist and lifelong patron of the arts, she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art from the University of Texas at Austin in 1978 and did graduate work in photography at Cornell University. Her Sixth Street studio in Alpine is where she loved to work. If asked what gave meaning to her life, Mahala would have undoubtedly answered: her children and her art. Although she was passionate about many types of art, she was first and foremost a ceramic tile muralist, and her works grace many homes, as well as the Hallie Stillwell Museum south of Marathon. Mahala loved music, photography, and dancing. Always a traveler, she saw much of the world, but made her homes in West Texas and Austin. The Glass Mountains held a special place in her heart. Survivors include her two daughters, Shiloh and Kiowa, who were raised in Alpine and recently relocated to Austin, and their father, Roger Cutforth of Terlingua. She is the middle child of Fort Stockton natives Dr. D.J. and Jane Sibley, longtime residents of Austin. An older brother, Jake Sibley, died in January 1991, and his children, Sarah Elaine Sibley, 15, and Elizabeth Victoria Sibley, 13, reside with their mother, Jan Ponton-Sibley-Akers in Midland. Her younger brother Hiram, his wife Liz, and their children Rachel, 17, and Chris, 14, live in Alpine. A local service will be held in Alpine in the near future, followed by a burial at the Glass Mountain Ranch. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be directed to the Mahala Sibley Memorial Fund, UT College of Fine Arts, Austin, TX 78712, or a local charity of your choice. EMIL SLOVACEK JR J.E.
