Red Cowley, 83, passed away Sunday, Aug, 31, 2003, in a local nursing home. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens, with Chaplin Mike Andress, of Hospice of San Angelo, officiating. Red was born Sept. 24, 1919, to W.J. Jack Cowley and Beedie Akers Cowley in Poteet, Texas. After his father moved the young family to San Angelo, Red began a lifelong love affair with the sport of baseball that spanned some seven decades. A gifted athlete, Red played sandlot baseball as a young teen, which ultimately led to his being signed by the St. Louis Browns. However, before he could establish himself with the team, World War II happened and Uncle Sam came calling on Feb. 11, 1941. As fate would have it, Red was assigned to Special Services with the Army Air Force in Central America. His tour of duty consisted of playing professional baseball with the likes of Stan Musial, Ted Williams, Enos Slaughter and Terry Moore, to name a few. On Nov. 30, 1945, he returned home to Texas and began again to play baseball locally. He played semi-pro baseball for several years and in 1948, he became a member of the original San Angelo Colts Baseball Team. Once again the big leagues came calling, but his time there was short lived. Hampered by injuries and age, he returned to Texas and played with the Colts and other semi-pro teams, until his retirement from baseball in 1953. In 1954, he began a 27-year career with the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, retiring in October, 1981 as supervisor special testing. During this time, he continued to share his love of baseball, coaching YMCA Little League, Junior League and Senior League baseball for many years. Red helped many area boys understand the game he loved so well, by tirelessly sharing his knowledge and expertise of the game. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his younger sister, Nell Cowley Trantham. Survivors are his children, Jacque Belcher and husband, Jimmy, of San Angelo and Jan Rushing of Lewisville. Grandchildren surviving are Blake Belcher of San Angelo, Ginna Belcher Hruska and husband, Jed, of Fredericksburg, Alisha Rushing of Lewisville and Chase Rushing of Dallas. Also surviving is a special niece, Jeri Duncan and husband, Skipper, of San Angelo and children, Jim, Jennifer and Cody Holt of Oregon, and Randy Holt of Falfurrias, Texas. A stepdaughter and special friend, Deborah Lancaster and husband, Oren, of Knott, Texas, also survive. The family wishes to thank Hospice of San Angelo, especially Celine and Debbie, for their abundant patience, kindness and understanding during Daddys illness. Also, to the staff and caregivers of Regency House, thank you for all your dedication and understanding during Daddys short time there. He was baptized and confirmed in St. Paul Lutheran Church at an early age. Paul is survived by his wife, Vikki; his parents, Herbert and Elvie Donop; sister, Trudy Schmidt and husband, Tim; brothers, Larry and wife, Jan, of Brady and James and wife, Judy, of Mason. There are numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews whom he enjoyed and loved very much. As a youth, Paul loved music and the Mason High School Band. He assisted Marjorie Hey with the childrens choir at St. Paul and even preached a sermon based on Psalm 150. While some frowned upon musical instruments in worship, Paul composed an operetta that was performed in several local churches. Later, Paul attended the University of the Americas in Puebla, Mexico, as well as Texas Lutheran University in Seguin. He received his B.A. from the University of Texas in Austin and his Doctor of Jurisprudence from Texas Tech Law School in Lubbock. Paul was an avid genealogist performing extensive research and travel. His genealogical work took him to many exotic places, but Germany was his favorite. While in Germany, Paul reestablished family connections with cousins living there. Paul earned a law degree while working for the Internal Revenue Service. He and Vikki found time to renovate a 19th century Victorian house where they both lived. He packed a great deal of living into 50 years. He will be missed and treasured by all who knew and loved him. We thank God for sharing him with us. [hd_memorials.gif] Post a memorial Back DOROTHY MAY EVANS Kerbow Funeral Home ELDORADO God called Dorothy May Evans to her heavenly home on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003. She left behind a legacy of love and strength for her family and friends. Dorothy was born on Oct. 16, 1914, in Vernon, Texas, to Lon and Lillie Head. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, James Williams Head; three sisters, Marguerite Head, Aline Head Taylor and Mary Belle Head Starr; and by her husband, Robert A. Evans Jr. Dorothy met Bob, an Eldorado native, at San Angelo Business College and they married in Sherwood, Texas, on June 6, 1936, subsequently moving to Eldorado, Texas, where she lived until her death. The couple had one daughter, Suzanne. Survivors include Suzanne and her husband, John McGee of Mertzon, Texas; three grandchildren, Heather Morris of Houston, Texas, John McGee Jr. and wife, Lisa, of Katy, Texas, and Robert McGee and wife, Janet, of Levelland, Texas; and six great-grandchildren, Hayley Morris of Houston, Jonathan McGee of Katy, and Brittnae, Logan, Philip and Faith McGee of Levelland also shared the love of Mama Dot. Three nieces and four nephews and several great-nieces and great-nephews also survive her. Dorothy had a heart big enough to give love and laughter to everyone around her and she shared it abundantly. Her extended family included some very special friends, but she also enjoyed the camaraderie of everyone who came into her workplace. She could laugh and tease and give hugs and put you in your place. Her grandchildren will attest to the fact that a swift swat or a pointed finger, or just a look, was enough to strike fear into the hearts of the bravest. But she was always there for anyone who needed cheering up or a good portion of strength. Her career in Eldorado spanned almost 60 years, much of which was spent in various offices at the Schleicher County Courthouse. She had served one appointed term and five elected terms as Tax Assessor-Collector when she retired in 1996. You will be missed, Mom. You were truly a unique individual and probably one of the few remaining matriarchs. You taught us well, though, about being nice to each other and loving and laughingand minding you. Thank you for being you. The family requests that memorials be made to the Eldorado Cemetery Chapel Fund, P.O. Box 117, Eldorado, TX 76936, or to a favorite charity. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, in Eldorado with graveside service conducted by Pastor Jeffrey Lee of Mertzon. Grace was born one of four children on Oct. 19, 1901, to James W. Dodd and Nancy Elizabeth Brooks in Coleman County, Texas. Early in her life, Graces family moved to Menard, Texas, where her father ranched and owned a hardware store. After her father was killed in a hunting accident, the Dodds moved back to Coleman to be near their extended family. Grace graduated from Coleman High School at the age of 17 and attended business school. She then went to work bookkeeping in her uncles mercantile store. Grace met her husband-to-be during the bustling activity of the oil boom. She was working in her uncles store when Charles Pollard, a young wildcatter, stopped to ask directions. Charlie and Grace were married on April 15, 1928. They were blessed with one son, James Frank Pollard. Over the first few years, the Pollard family moved where the oil business took them. They finally settled in Fort Stockton in 1940. One of Graces earliest memories of the town where she would eventually spend over 55 years was that trees and grass were so scarce, that instead of mowing their yards, people swept them with brooms. On Dec. 9, 1969, Charlie Pollard died of a heart attack. But the years did not dim the love or devotion Grace had for the once young driller she always referred to as Mr. Pollard. In a life that spanned almost 102 years, Grace had vivid memories of the Depression years, the Dust Bowl, the market crash in 1929, blizzards and oil booms and busts. She saw Halleys Comet twice and shook Lindberghs hand at a parade honoring his return from his flight. She remembered when her father bought a Simplex automobile in 1909. And she remembered when we got into World War I and the Kaiser didnt care to send over any more parts for the car. She remembered seeing her first airplane and speaking on a telephone for the first time. Grace was a unique woman with an innate strength that carried her through life with style and dignity. She knew adversity and prosperity and remained relatively unaffected by either. Grace had an uncanny ability to take tremendous pleasure in the smallest things. Her days were made full and bright by the flowers she grew in her garden, the delicate handmade lace she tatted, setting a beautiful table and cooking fudge. Family holidays were made more special each year by the blessings given by Grace before the meal. With her words, she managed to inspire us to do better, comfort us when necessary and challenge us to remember how blessed we were. Perhaps more than anything, Grace Pollard was a storyteller. With her wit and wisdom she had a way of making days gone by come to life for us in vivid color. She taught us and entertained us. And in doing so, she made our history seem real in a way that no textbook ever could. Grace is survived by her son, Frank Pollard; a granddaughter, Lisa Pollard Zucker and her husband, Mike; a grandson, Jim Pollard and his wife, Wendy; a great-granddaughter, Charless Pollard; a niece, Patsy Miller and her husband, Bub; and a niece, Grace Lester. Grace was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Pollard; her daughter-in-law, Martha Charless Pollard; and her grandson, Mark Cameron Pollard. Pallbearers are Bernard Beck, Conoly Brooks III, King Terry Jr., Delmon Hodges and David Robbins. Grace was a former First Lady of Fort Stockton, an active member of the Methodist Church, the United Methodist Womens Club and the Mary-Martha Circle, the Fort Stockton Literary Club, the New Century Social Club, the Saturday Bridge Club and the Fort Stockton Garden Club. Service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 5, at the First United Methodist Church in Fort Stockton, Texas. There is much to be learned from a life lived so long and so well. Surprisingly, most of those lessons are relatively simple: find happiness in the small details of each day, love your family, glory in your faith in God and make that faith an active part of your life, never quit because things are too hard, dont be afraid to go where life takes you, and laugh often. Godspeed Grandmother. [hd_memorials.gif] September 04, 2003 Frank, I am truly sorry for the loss of your mother. I would have loved to have known her. Your old TWC classmate. -J. (This museum houses a leading collection of American painters and artists e.g. Edward Hopper, Winslow Homer, Currys Tornado over Kansas and European impressionists.) Norma was a great lover of music. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 1, at Eastside Baptist Church in McCamey. A military burial service will follow in Resthaven Cemetery. Enoch was born Feb. 24, 1926, to the late James W. Smith and Hollis Dawson Smith, an early day West Texas family. At one time his grandfather, Joe Dawson, owned most of the land between Castle Gap and what is now Fort Stockton. His great uncle, Elisa Dawson was the first elected sheriff of Ector County. Enoch loved the life of a cowboy and lived it fully. His idea of a really good time was to spend a day or a week at a rodeo. He liked competing and seeing his children and grandchildren do likewise. He had the privilege of seeing them all go to the winners circle. He was a decorated veteran of World War II. He was one of the youngest age group to see actual combat while serving in the Philippines and was a member of the occupation forces in Japan after their surrender. He served proudly as a member of the First Calvary Division and was discharged a Tech Sergeant at the age of 20. Enoch accepted the saving grace of Jesus Christ at the Girvin Baptist Church in 1939. He was baptized in the Pecos River at the age of 13. On Feb. 13, 1948, Enoch and Jaylea Burroughs were married. He was a retired welding contractor and an active rancher until the day of his death. He is survived by his wife of McCamey; his son and daughter-in-law, Ray and Silvia of McCamey; his son and daughter-in-law, Howard and Rheba of Flower Mound; his grandson, Brian of Hurst; his grandchildren, Audry and Shay of McCamey; and great-grandchildren, Gracie and Dawson of Hurst. He was preceded in death by his two sisters, Olene McBee and Orien Rasmussen. For the Lord knows our frame. He knows that we are dust as for man his days are like grass. As a flower of the field so he flourishes. For the wind passes over it and it is gone. Its place remembers it no more. But the memory of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting for those who love Him. Amen. [hd_memorials.gif] September 05, 2003 I never got to meet Enoch, but he and my brother fought in the same battles; I was in rodeo and am a rancher.
