Ranch work with his uncle, Ad Neal, took him to West Texas. He worked at Ad's Garden City ranch and the Strauss Ranch near Alpine before settling at the Woulfter Ranch west of Toyahvale. After serving his country in World War II, he met Ellen Moore of Balmorhea, and they were married June 23, 1949. They made their home at the ranch where Nelson raised sheep, mohair goats and cattle. Ellen always said that the only crop that didn't fail in the '50s drought was "their kid crop." Nelson, a master Cat skinner, put much of his energy into improving the ranch by building pipelines, tanks and roads. Woulfter Ranch was his pride and joy until he retired to Sunrise Beach on Lake LBJ to pursue his hobby of fishing. Missing ranch life, he bought a ranch near Cherokee where he and Ellen raised crossbred cattle. Nelson will be remembered as a hard worker who loved sharing his prosperity. In 1954, she entered Texas Christian University and was in the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. Her free spirit and artistic talents led her to pursue a career in art, but her father convinced her that she needed an occupation that she could fall back on. Marilyn followed her father's advice and obtained a bachelor's degree in elementary education. She used her creative spirit to touch the hearts and minds of special needs children with whom she worked. Marilyn married her childhood sweetheart, Billy Riggs, on Aug. 30, 1957. It was during her college days that she was approached by a modeling scout. Thus she began her fashion career as a lark, doing runway and television work. Her hobby soon turned into a full-time career, and it wasn't long before she was offered her own television show. Marilyn and Billy spent time in Oklahoma City before moving to Houston and then ultimately settling in the Fort Worth area. Marilyn continued her fashion career and worked the catwalks until she and Billy decided to retire to the family ranch in West Texas. She had been living in Comanche on the family ranch with her husband, Bill, since 1999. Living the true "Green Acres" lifestyle, they traded in the cattle to raise exotics. It was a favorite sight to see Marilyn in her starched white jeans tucked into mud boots out amongst the animals. She returned to Fort Worth in September of last year when she was first diagnosed with her illness. Marilyn will be forever remembered for her beautiful spirit, her sparkling eyes and her permanent smile. She radiated with compassion, kindness and openness. Her house was always open, and it was an ongoing joke that she had no front door, only a revolving one, as the spare bedrooms continued to be filled long after the kids were grown. Her gift of overwhelming unselfishness and thoughtfulness has touched the hearts of many. Her sense of humor and graciousness remained until her final day. Marilyn was a member of the Westcliff Garden Club, the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority Alumni Association and the Fort Worth Geological and Geophysical Auxiliary. Gentry-Fife Funeral Home CONCEPCIÓN GARCIA Concepción Garcia once recalled seeing Halley's Comet streak across the Texas sky in 1910, when she and the new century were only 10. She would live long enough to see it again when the comet made another highly visible pass in 1985. In a long life that ended Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, Mrs. Garcia, known to her family and friends as "Mama Concha," would see a lot of change. She was born Dec. 8, 1900, in San Antonio, when William McKinley was president. During her time, there would be 18 more occupants passing through the White House. There would be two world wars, a conflict in Korea, war in Vietnam and war in the Middle East. Cars would replace wagons, and telephones and televisions would become commonplace. Her life was touched by the major events of her days. Her oldest son served in World War II, starting a family tradition of military service. She was a firm believer in her Roman Catholic faith and in hard work. While she found comfort in her faith, she found happiness in her garden. She loved to work outside and continued to do so even after she was in her eighties. Mrs. Garcia never hesitated to speak her mind. As blunt as she could be, though, she was generous with her blessing of a coterie of family and friends who constantly were passing through a front door she never locked. What she had, she shared with whoever needed it. She moved to San Angelo from San Antonio as a young girl. Family lore has it that the trip was made in a horse-drawn wagon. She married Crecencio Garcia in San Angelo in 1918. She and her husband were migrant farm workers throughout the Depression years. She was for many years an employee of the now-defunct Texas Hotel. She loved her family and her family loved her. While that family will miss her, they are thankful that their Mama Concha enjoyed a long and vigorous life. She was preceded in death by husband, Crecencio; two sons, Crecencio Garcia Jr. and Fred Garcia Sr.; brothers, Gregorio Alvarez, Jose Alvarez and Carlos Rodriguez; sisters, Lupe Quintella and Francisca Maldonado; and great-grandson Michael Martinez. Survivors include two sons, Arnold Garcia Sr. and his wife, Bertha, and Willie Garcia and his wife, Julia; and daughters, Nellie Soto and husband, Genaro, and Felice Tafolla, all of San Angelo; daughters, Marcelina Wozniak and husband, Joe, of Laurel, Md., and Elaine Davila and husband, David, of Wichita Falls; and daughter-in-law, Mary Garcia of San Angelo. Also surviving are 30 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren and 25 great-great- grandchildren. A rosary is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, at Johnson's Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with burial in Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tom Soto, Arnold Garcia Jr., Alex Tafolla, Charles Tafolla, Richard Garcia and Artie Davila. The family would like to thank the following special people for all the care and love they bestowed on Mama Concha: Licha Herrington, Delores Ramirez, Hortensia Whittle, the staff with VistaCare Hospice and the wonderful staff at Heritage House Nursing Home. Jones, age 98, passed away Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003, in Meadow Creek Nursing Center after a short illness. Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens conducted by Nelson Erwin, CLP, at First Presbyterian Church of San Angelo. B.F. Jones was born in Tyler, Texas, on June 11, 1905. He was educated in Tyler public schools and Tyler Business College. During his very early working years, he traveled for Tandy Leather Co., going from East Texas to as far as Thurber, near Ranger, in North Central Texas over, at that time, unpaved roads. While the family was living in Longview in the late 1920s during the height of the East Texas "oil boom," he began his long career in the oil and gas industry as a scout- landman for the Sun Oil Company, scouting wells and buying leases for the company around Longview, Kilgore, Lufkin and Tyler. In the early 1930s, he moved to Dallas to work for the American Republics Corp. and continue in his chosen profession. During his tenure in Dallas, he furthered his education by attending night classes in the study of law and accounting. In 1937, he transferred with his family to San Angelo to later become the West Texas-New Mexico Division Land Manager for American Republics Corp., now ARCO (Atlantic Richfield Co.), which was a position he would hold until he resigned in 1952 to form his own independent oil and gas lease brokerage firm in 1954. He retired from active participation in the oil and gas industry in April 1965, at which time he turned his energy and efforts to farming and ranching in Coke County, teaching his grandchildren, particularly his grandsons, some of the many manual skills required to operate and maintain the farm and equipment, most of which they have retained to this day. He was blessed with good health and was able to continue and enjoy working with the land for all except the last few years of his life. B.F. was a very kind, generous and loving person. One of his greatest pleasures in life was having his grandchildren and great-grandchildren around him, having a lot of fun and "raising a big ruckus." His love for each of them was endless. Johnson's Funeral Home KNOX BAILEY TRAMMELL BRADY - Knox Bailey Trammell Sr., age 87, longtime local businessman, passed away from this life into the next Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, in Brady. He was born Nov. 16, 1916, in Pidcoke, Texas, to Bailey Iven and Bertha Basham Trammell. He married Verna Spiller on Oct. 22, 1949, in Durant, Okla. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Brady. Many families will remember Knox as their TV repairman. He had operated a repair shop from his garage on Poplar Drive since returning to Brady from the Dallas area in the early 1950s. For many of these years, he serviced new and used televisions for the local Western Auto. He was a World War II Army veteran, recipient of the Purple Heart and was a P.O.W. in Germany. He spoke little of the horrors of war and of being a captive in Germany. Late in his life, his brother-in-law, Wayne Spiller chronicled stories of military service in a section of his third volume, "Handbook of McCulloch County History," and Knox shared stories with him. He was later featured in a Veteran's Day article for the Brady Standard written by James Stewart. One quote from that article that speaks so well for our veterans is, "I, like most others, have tried since the day I came home to forget what I have seen; a lot will never be forgotten." Yet, from this article, the most telling of his character was, "I didn't really like the military all that much, but it is just like any other business - you do the best you can at what you are doing and adjust to the situation." Those of us who know him as a quiet man with a kind spirit understand that this statement is the essence of the man he was. He never had an unkind word to speak of anyone, and he didn't dwell on things about his life that he couldn't change. Knox is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Verna Spiller Trammell of Brady; a son, Knox Trammell Jr. and wife, Rose, of Kingsville; stepsons, Bill Boswell and wife, Mickey, of Brady, Spiller Boswell and wife, Marthella, of Voca; daughter, Mary Lanford and husband, Jim, of Austin; grandchildren, Roycella Lancaster of Round Rock, David Boswell and Vonda Hollis of San Angelo, Charles Trammell of Woodlands, Mitchell Trammell of Taylor, and Jim, Pamela and Guy Lanford of Austin; 16 great- grandchildren; and four nephews. Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at Leatherwood Memorial Chapels in Brady. Burial with full military honors will follow in Voca Cemetery, in the Spiller Family Plot next to his wife's parents, Ed and Lillie Spiller, and his beloved brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Nell Spiller, whose friendship through the years he deeply cherished. He was also preceded in death bv his parents; his brother, Lyndell of Dallas; a grandson, James Roy Boswell of Voca; and a nephew, Gary Trammell of Dallas. Later, he entered the oil business where he worked across Texas from Galveston to the Guadalupe Mountains.
