WALTERS Benjamin "Ben" C. Walters, age 72, of San Angelo passed away Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, while at Shannon Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. The graveside Masonic service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26 in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Visitation with the family was from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23 at Johnson's Funeral Home. Ben was born on Feb. 22, 1932, in Priceville, Ky., to his parents, Cessna and Mable Wheeler Walters. He graduated from Cub Run High School and attended college in Nashville, Tenn. He served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict, being stationed in New York, San Antonio, San Angelo, Biloxi, Miss., Korea and Wichita Falls, Texas. Ben was a Master Mason for over 40 years with the San Angelo Masonic Lodge 570. He was a charter member of the Concho Bass Club in San Angelo and a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. He worked at the American Standard in Louisville, Ky., and retired with Lone Star Gas Company in 1990 after 36 years of employment. Mr. Walters was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters. He is survived by his loving wife of over 50 years, Marie Alldredge; brothers-in-law, Owen Hodges of Cave City, Ky., and Ben Alldredge of Wingate, Texas; sisters-in-law, Bonnie Barefoot Walker of San Angelo and Linda Alldredge of Kingsville, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; great-great- nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends. "Jim" Box, 85, died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, and went home to glory to be with our Lord. Jim was born on June 4, 1914, in the small town of Wichita Falls, Texas, to James Amos and Hattie Cooley Box. Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Remona Lucille "Luci" Jordan Box, of 62 years and his eldest daughter, Mona Bourke. Jim is survived by his daughter, Deidra Tyler and husband, Jack, of Austin; and granddaughters, Kelly Goode of Austin, Kristy Artz and husband, Warren, of Australia, Lisa Coscia and husband, Matt, and their children, Berkley and Emory, of Coppell, and Trisha Bourke of Edmond, Okla. WATSON Winifred C. Watson, 87, of San Angelo, passed away very peacefully on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at his residence. Visitation will be until 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27 at Johnson's Funeral Home. Service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28 in Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel with Ted Kell of Brownwood and Paul Shero of San Angelo officiating. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Cemetery in Brownwood. Winifred was born on Dec. 8, 1916, in Rockwood, Texas. He was the fifth of eight children born to William Booker and Lottie Mae Watson. Winifred joined the U.S. Air Force in 1941 and was discharged in 1948 as a staff sergeant. While in the Air Force he was a parachute packer. Following his discharge, he farmed in Coleman County and was employed with the Civil Service packing parachutes at Reese Air Force Base in Lubbock. After retiring from farming in 1975, he did church work, sold real estate, played golf and gardened. Winifred was a faithful member of Austin Avenue Church of Christ while living in Brownwood, Texas, and Southgate Church of Christ in San Angelo. Winifred was married to Tennie L. Davis on April 12, 1944, in Waco, Texas. She preceded him in death on Feb. 23, 1997. Following her death, he moved to San Angelo. While living there, he made numerous friends at church and at Royal Estates, including the late Nita Townley. Winifred was also preceded in death by his parents; five siblings; son, Gene Sherrod and his wife, Clhoe; and beloved daughter-in-law, Reba Sherrod. Survivors include son, Hilton Sherrod and wife, Mary Ann, of Boerne, Texas; grandchildren, Steve Sherrod and wife, Karen, of San Angelo and their children, Crystal Conner and husband, Caleb, of San Angelo and Cody Sherrod of Austin, Mitchell Sherrod and wife, Laura, and their children, Amanda and Garrett, all of Boerne, Texas, Jim Nixon Sherrod and wife, Kendra, and their children, Zachery, Andrew and Ethan, all of Kingsville, John Sherrod and wife, Tip, of Albuquerque, N.M., and their children, Billy and Richard, Byron Sherrod and wife, Jennifer, of Houston and their children, Brook, Cody and Erica, Cindy Sherrod and Jan Sherrod of Memphis, Tenn.; sister, Billie Mae Schrader; brother, Hollis Watson, both of Santa Anna, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews. HOLLAND SAN ANGELO - Buster Holland, 87, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, in Baptist Memorials Center in San Angelo. Service will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28 at First Presbyterian Church in Marfa, Texas, with burial in Marfa Cemetery. Buster was born on Dec. 16, 1916, in San Angelo, Texas, to Wiley and Lilian Holland. He married "Tulie" Zuberbueler in 1950 who preceded him in death in 1971. In 1973 he married Judy Anthony, and she preceded him in death in 1990. Buster graduated from Marfa High School in 1935. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving from December 1941 through November 1945 on the USS Vega and the USS Makin Island in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Marfa, Marfa Masonic Lodge, El Paso Scottish Rite and Alpine York Rite. Buster spent his life doing what he loved, working with livestock and ranching, and retired in 1992 after 32 years on the W.E. Love Estate in Marfa. He was a consummate gentleman of quiet strength, endless faith and unfailing grace. He had a special way, touched all he met and will be forever missed. Avila on March 28, 1961, in Sonora, Texas. Armando went home to his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004. Armando joined the Army in 1978 at the age of 17, serving his country for four years and eight years in the Army Reserves. He was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division. Carpenter, 90, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004, at his home following a lengthy illness. Graveside service was at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21 in Elm Grove Cemetery in Alpine, Texas. Mr. Carpenter was born Oct. 3, 1913, in Belton, Texas. In 1936, he met and married Charlcie Henderson of Austin, Texas. In 1942, he, his wife and daughter, Harriet, moved to El Paso, Texas, with the Internal Revenue Service. He was later assigned to Alpine in 1944 as the first revenue agent in the area. His passion for Alpine and the area caused Harry to resign from the Internal Revenue Service, and he opened a public accounting and bookkeeping service, a more welcomed occupation. In 1947, he sold the bookkeeping service and opened Carpenter Real Estate, which is now one of the three oldest family- operated businesses in Alpine today. Harry was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a mason in the Alpine Masonic Lodge, founder and lifetime member of the Sul Ross State University Century Club, past member and director of the Alpine Chamber of Commerce, and very active in civic leadership and fund raising in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. In 1952, he acquired 150 acres from H.L. Kokernot and began developing what is now known as the Carpenter Addition. Harry's family always came first, with his leisure time being spent with his family members on fishing and hunting trips or at home. Harry was preceded in death by his wife, Charlcie Carpenter; his parents, Joe and Lena Carpenter; two sisters, Eda Mae Poteet and Helen White; and three brothers, Joe Carpenter, Kyle Carpenter and Wayne Carpenter. Survivors include one daughter, Harriet Krhut of Monahans, Texas; one son, John Carpenter of Alpine, Texas; six granddaughters, Kandle Krhut, Crystal Pena, Vicki Kutscherousky, Kelly Hendricks, Tera Carpenter and Celeste Carpenter; and four great-grandchildren, Braxton, Colton, Shawn and Justin. She was born Jan. 28, 1927, to Johnny Morris Garrett and Jewel Coral Garrett Kress in Pittsburg, Texas. Mrs. Mathis married Benny Morris Mathis Sr. on Nov. 11, 1944, in San Angelo. Mr. Mathis preceded his wife in death on April 15, 2003. Mrs. Mathis retired from the retail industry after 25 years of service in San Antonio, Texas. She was of the Baptist faith. The Gabriels Funeral Chapel February 28 DORIS HELEN BURNS Doris Helen Gautreaux Burns, 74, lost a courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at the home of her daughter in San Angelo. Doris was born on June 13, 1929, near Houston, Texas. Her parents were C.J. and Helen Gautreaux. She grew up in New Orleans, La., where she graduated from Nichols High School and attended business college. She married Robert H. Burns in 1954, and they had one daughter. Mr. Burns passed away in 1964. After a successful career in the business world, Doris retired from Ernst & Young in 1992. She moved to San Angelo in 1996. Survivors include her daughter, Lynn Bright Butler and son-in-law, Mark Butler, both of San Angelo; grandsons, Jason and Stephen Bright of San Angelo and Justin Butler of Bastrop; and her brother and sister-in-law, William and June Gautreaux of Biloxi, Miss. She is also survived by friends, Deanne Carroll of Dallas, Lee Foringer of Sun City West, Ariz., Linda Alexander of Dallas, Anita Rivera of San Angelo and Mary Merritt of Grape Creek. Survivors include his wife, Patti Sage of Early, Texas; two daughters, Teresa Jean Harris of Columbus, Ohio, and Rebecca Anne Breeding of Miles, Texas; and two grandchildren. Delia was born July 22, 1914, in Knowles, N.M., to Mr. James Hugh Mullane and Mrs. Velma Agnes Wimberley Mullane. She married Claude Cline on July 23, 1938, in San Angelo. He preceded her in death on Jan. 20, 1981. Delia worked for herself as a beautician for over 32 years. She was preceded in death by a son, David Michael Cline; grandson, Tony Cline; great-granddaughter, Kelsey Warren; two brothers and three sisters. He was born Dec. 24, 1932, in Ozona, Texas, to Eugenio and Rufugia Martinez. Jesus is survived by his wife of 50 years, Esther L. Martinez; and five children and their spouses, Ricardo Martinez and wife, Blanca, of Ozona, Reynaldo Martinez and wife, Leticia, of Ozona, Rebecca Tarin and husband, Teclo "Dare" of Odessa, Elizabeth Herrera and husband, Arnulfo "Arnie," of Midland, and Jesus "Chuy" Martinez and wife, Lori, of San Angelo. Survivors also include eight grandchildren, Shelly Lechuga and husband, John, of San Angelo, Amber, Michael and Aubrie Tarin of Odessa, Megan and Mallory Marin and Myra Herrera of Midland and R.J. Preddy Funeral Home BERNIE LEE MIKA SAN ANGELO - Bernie Lee Mika, 80, of San Angelo passed away at his home Friday, Feb. 27, 2004. Family visitation will be Sunday, Feb. 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Johnson's Funeral Home. Service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, March 1 at Johnson's Funeral Home with William Rosser and Pastor Curt Dauphin officiating. Burial will follow in the Miles Cemetery. Bernie was born to Albin and Betty Mika on July 30, 1923. After attending San Angelo schools, he received his formal education from Texas Tech University. Bernie served his country during World War II, where he received the Bronze and Silver Star. In 1947, he married Lucy Churchwell in San Angelo. He then started his lifelong occupation as a farmer near Mereta. He enjoyed every day of his 50-year career, and even though he had lived in San Angelo for the last 20 years, he still called Mereta his home. Bernie was a member of several service organizations and served the board of many of these, including CVEC, Texas Farm Bureau, ASCS and the Mereta Coop Gin. Bernie received lifetime membership from the Mereta Lions Club and was also awarded Conservationist of the Year for his district by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Bernie was a member of the Mereta Baptist Church. After his move to San Angelo, he joined PaulAnn Baptist Church where he helped build the original church building. In his later years, he became an active member of the Business Men's Bible Class. Bernie is survived by his wife of 57 years; one daughter, Lee Ann Mika-Mendez and her husband, Gabe; two grandsons, Nathan and Dylan Havlak, all of Miles; two granddaughters, Jana Massey of Austin and Amanda Massey of San Angelo; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Weldon Mika of Eden; one sister, Kathleen Jolley of Brownwood; and numerous nieces and nephews. His parents; one brother, James Mika; and two daughters, Janice Smith and Jo Ellen Massey, preceded him in death. Pallbearers will be LeRoy Olsak, Clovis Olsak, W.H. Johnson's Funeral Home JAY T. SHURLEY Dr. Jay T. Shurley, 86, died on Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, at home in Oklahoma City. Dr. Shurley was born in Schleicher County, Texas, on Dec. 20, 1917, to Ira L. and Jewell Choate Shurley. He attended schools in Sonora and San Angelo, received a degree in zoology from the University of Texas at Austin and received his medical degree from the Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. As a captain in the Army Medical Corps, Dr. Shurley served as instructor in Military Neuropsychiatry at Medical Field Service School, Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Shurley moved to Oklahoma from the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md., and was founder and director of the Behavioral Sciences Laboratory at the VA Medical Center in Oklahoma City and was Senior Medical Investigator for the VA for 14 years. He taught psychiatry for many years, retiring as Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Survivors include four sons and wives, Dr. Tom and Nancy Shurley, of Altus, Okla.; Guy Shurley of Denver, Colo., and Mary Shurley of Grand Junction, Colo., Phil and Beverly Shurley of Tulsa, Okla., and John A. and Jessica Shurley of Charlotte, N.C.; granddaughters, Jennifer Shurley Campbell and Ashley Shurley; and grandson, Brian Shurley. Dr. Shurley was preceded in death by his first son, John Laurence Shurley and his sister, Guyon Shurley Martin. He will be sorely missed as the family patriarch, genealogist and historian. A graveside service will be held in Sonora at a later date. Born in Haskell County, Texas, on Dec. 7, 1929, to parents Emmett and Vera Couch, Billy grew up on the family farm with his four brothers and two sisters. He married Trudy McNeal on Dec. 28, 1950, in Childress, Texas. During the Korean Conflict, he served in the Army and was stationed in Germany. Bill was a longtime employee of West Texas Utilities. He worked in WTU power plants throughout West Texas before retiring in San Angelo in 1992. Alberta was born to Walter Lee and Mary Ernst Holder on April 24, 1926, in Rowena, Texas. She married Ralph A. Halfmann on Oct. 5, 1949, and lived in the St. Lawrence farming community where they were members of the St. Lawrence Catholic Church. She was a member of the St. Theresa Altar Society and also served as one of the first postmasters at St. Lawrence. Alberta was a homemaker and enjoyed farm life and riding with Ralph to check the livestock, the farm and care for the church cemetery. After college, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving four years as a corpsman. While stationed in Hawaii, he met Martha Hamilton, whom he later wed on March 2, 1957. He moved to West Texas in 1979 and worked for Rexene. He married Georgia Mae McKinnley on Nov. 22, 1941. Shortly after Dec. 7, 1941, he enlisted in the Army Air Corp and served three years in New Guinea. Returning to the ranch after the war, he remained there until moving to Rio Concho West, San Angelo, Texas, in 1989. His love of flying began as a youngster and his passion continued for better than 50 years. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and brother, E.G. Cauble. Amundsen of Rohnert Park, Calif., passed away Monday, March 1, 2004, in Santa Rosa, Calif. Maxine was born on her family's ranch in Christoval, Texas, and delivered by a doctor who came by horse and buggy. Maxine was 86 years old. Maxine had lived in Ukiah from 1947 to 1962 with her husband, Robert, who worked for the sheriff's office. In 1962 they moved to Rohnert Park, Calif. Rohnert Park was a new community then and Maxine won a community award for her gardens and flowers in her yard. Her family will remember her as a devoted grandma. Maxine is survived by her husband of 63 years, Robert Amundsen of Rohnert Park, Calif.; her son, Tony, and wife, T.J. Eversole Mortuary March 5 INELLE OWENS COLBY SAN ANGELO - Inelle Owens Colby, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully at the age of 82, entering into her heavenly reward on Wednesday, March 3, 2004. Inelle was born on Sept. 20, 1921, to Gus and Ruby Owens. She lived in Bishop, Texas, as a child before moving to San Angelo with her parents and her five brothers and sisters. The family together began and successfully managed J.A. Owens & Sons Produce Company. While attending San Angelo College in 1941, Inelle met the love of her life, Billy Walter Colby Sr. It was love at first sight, and they were married in her parents' living room on June 14, 1942. Inelle retired in 1976 as a bookkeeper from the longtime locally founded Hemphill Wells & Company. Inelle was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 years and her first- born son, David Eugene Colby. Inelle is survived by sisters, Jeannie Deans of San Angelo and Mozelle Smith of Austin; one brother, Toby Owens of Fayetteville, N.C.; daughter, Alice Ann Caffey and her husband, Ted, of New Braunfels; son, Billy Walter Colby Jr. and his wife, Becky, of Austin; four precious grandchildren; and five precious great-grandchildren. Elvira was born in Olfen, Texas, on Feb. 11, 1912, to Robert and Hilda Lange, and married Henry E. Halfmann on Sept. 8, 1931. Elvira was the organist for the St. Boniface Church in Olfen for many years. She also played the organ at the Sacred Heart Cathedral before retirement. Elvira was a member of the Holy Angels Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America and belonged to the quilting group and quilted many quilts for her children and grandchildren. In her early years in San Angelo, she worked at Warren Drug; then she started making cakes and cookies for her children and grandchildren, which was the beginning of Halfmann Cake Cottage. Her husband, Henry E. Halfmann, and grandsons, Cody Taylor and Austin Lee Kelley, preceded her in death. "Junior" Stegall, 84, of Miles, Texas, passed away Friday, March 5, 2004, at his residence after a lengthy illness. A service to celebrate his life will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 8, 2004, at the Christian Faith Center located at 1414 N. Chadbourne St., San Angelo, Texas, with the Rev. Eddie Tingle, Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Miles, Texas, officiating. He will be assisted by J.D. Crawford, lifetime friend from Midland, Texas, and Richard Perry, nephew from San Antonio, Texas. A military honors burial will follow in Miles Cemetery. Junior was born in Robert Lee, Texas, on January, 29, 1920, to Enoch Marvin Stegall Sr. and Maudie Ethel Tutt Stegall. He was married to Louise Perry in 1939, who preceded him in death in 1975 after 36 years of marriage, and to Ann Baca in 1975 who also preceded him in death in 2003 after 28 years of marriage. After returning home to Miles after World War II, he was a farmer in the Miles community for a number of years. He left the farm in 1956 and moved to Midland, Texas, where he became employed as a sheet metal mechanic. He became a partner in Scooter's Heating and Air Conditioning in Midland, Texas, in 1964, and retired in 1983 after 19 ¤ years with the company. Junior was a prior member of the Miles Lions Club, having received their Citizen of the Year Award in 1987-88, and was former City Councilman for the City of Miles for outstanding service to the community in 1994. Junior was a decorated World War II veteran. He attained the rank of staff sergeant/communications chief with the 225th Field Artillery Battalion, United States Army, and served with the division from 1942-45. The principle campaigns in World War II were the Southern Phillipines Liberation, Western Ryukyus-Mariana Islands, Saipan and Tinian, Leyte Island and Okinawa. During his service, he received numerous decorations and citations to include the Presidential Unit Citation, World War II Victory Ribbon and four bronze stars. He faithfully attended the First Baptist Church in Miles, Texas, and was a prior member of the Foursquare Church in Midland, Texas, having served on church councils for 25 years. He was a loving husband and dad. He was also a great friend who touched many people's lives. He loved the church and being with God's people. He loved and supported his family and was truly their hero, and the "wind beneath their wings." He will always be remembered for his consummate love of music and sports, his passionate faith for the Lord Jesus Christ, his love, kindness and care for his family and friends, his faithfulness to God, and his determination to rise above obstacles and live life to the fullest, even though all the odds were stacked against him. He was a portrait of honesty and integrity. He had a great wit and great sense of humor, which he kept through the final hours of his life. We will miss his cute stories and his laughter. Junior was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Perry in 1975; his wife, Ann Baca in 2003; his parents, six sisters and two brothers. Survivors include two daughters, Melba Owens and Norma Stegall of Carrollton, Texas, and a special daughter-in-Christ, Patti McQueary of Carrollton, Texas. Other survivors include one sister, Ruby Duffy of Lubbock, Texas, and one brother, Preston Stegall of Midland, Texas, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Benham of Lubbock; two brothers, Tim Benham and Lance Washam, both of Lubbock; and two sisters, Carla Foltz of San Angelo and Marcy Watts of Lubbock. Mike is also survived by four grandchildren, Brandy, Stevie, Damian and Destiny. He has six nephews and four nieces who love him dearly, and also numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Mike graduated from Monterey High School (Lubbock) in 1976 and attended Texas Tech. Mike was a re-enactment soldier with Old Fort Concho. He spent most of his life in sales. Mike was a large man with an even bigger heart. He was a true Christian man who had a personal relationship with his Loving Savior, Jesus. He is more than our brother, father, son and uncle. He is our true friend who brought joy to all of our lives. He is now with his beloved mother and grandparents in the passionate, loving arms of Jesus. We will miss him dearly. Johnson's Funeral Home EDNA LORENE McCLUNG SAN ANGELO - At 4:40 p.m. Saturday, March 6, 2004, Edna Lorene McClung died from surgery complications and long illness. Born in Spur, Texas, in Dickens County on February 24, 1919, Lorene McArthur was the youngest of the five children of Edna Airheart and Edward Snead McArthur. She enjoyed an active youth, winning awards for tennis, horseback riding, speech competition and home economics. Lorene met her future husband, Jack McClung, and married him in 1938 when he was working at Spur's Safeway Grocery and she at Gabriel's Department Store. They moved to Brady, then San Angelo, following his career and beginning a family. As the family grew, so did Lorene's activities, raising four children, participating in her church, Pythias, Optimist wives and countless children's activities. Lorene was also very active with her husband, Jack, in Sunshine Grocery. She and her husband, Jack, were among the founding members of the San Angelo Saddle Club. Lorene's lifelong love of people and horses made her an invaluable and cherished club member. She served frequently as secretary and won statewide awards for her creative documentation of club activities. Lorene especially nurtured many young women of the club, helping them reach their goals. Her daughter, Jode, said, "She was a very strong, positive woman. She gave me the confidence to be who I wanted to be, to stand up for myself and others. She was my support, my model." She is survived by her devoted husband of 66 years, Jack, as well as four children, Jack E. McClung of Plainview, Sherre Tankersley of San Angelo, Jode Johnson of Dallas and Neill McClung of Austin. Wilma and her husband operated their stock farm in southeast Runnels County for more than 50 years. She was active during her entire adult life in the Extension Homemakers Club and the Stitch-in-Time Club. She was also a member of the Bethel Methodist Church and then the First Methodist Church of Ballinger, where she was a member of the Philathea Sunday School Class. "RED" THORNTON SAN ANGELO - O.B. "Red" Thornton, 94, of San Angelo passed away Monday, March 8, 2004, in a local hospital. Pallbearers are Steve Cortese, Scott Marecek, Jay Jones, Foster Ditmore, James Witt and Thomas Woods. O.B. was born on July 5, 1909, in Sulphur Springs to William Allen and Luella Payne Thornton. He was a Baptist and had been a resident of San Angelo since 1940. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and retired at age 62 from Civil Service at Goodfellow Air Force Base as chief financial officer. On Aug. 25, 1945, he married the love of his life, Mona Ditmore Page, who, after 44 years of marriage, preceded him in death in May of 1989. Red was an avid hunter. He and his friend W.W. McIntyre went deer hunting near Balmorhea, Texas, on the opening day of black tail season for 40 consecutive years. Survivors include four daughters, Jackie Hill and husband, Frank, of Denver City, Shirley Keeling of Phoenix, Jo Ann Cortese and husband, Sonny, of San Angelo, Barbara Bonnell and husband, Mike, of San Antonio; eight grandchildren, Pam Proctor of Denver City, Richard Collett of Corpus Christi, Tip Keeling and Wendy Kennedy of Phoenix, Steve Cortese, Tammy Reynolds and Scott Marecek of San Angelo, and Rhonda Marecek of San Antonio; 14 great-grandchildren; six great- great-grandchildren; one sister, Lorena "Peggy" Bonser of Arlington; and several nieces and nephews. BRENDA KAY STEEN SAN ANGELO - Brenda Kay Steen, 56, of San Angelo passed away Saturday, March 6, 2004, in Del Rio, Texas. Brenda was born on Nov. 16, 1947, in San Angelo, Texas, to her parents Joe S. and Katie Matthews Smith. She graduated from Central High School and she was a real estate broker most of her life. Brenda loved being a pilot and she was an avid snow skier and water skier. Wallie was born on March 4, 1935, in Runnels County near Rowena to parents, William Vinc and Elizabeth Kvapil Dorotik. The Dorotik family moved to Eola when he was very young and Wallie graduated from Eola High School in 1953. Shortly after that, he went to work at Wallace Labs as a stock boy. He worked his way up to become one of the major stockholders of the company. On July 19, 1969, Wallie married Rebecca West Rutledge. In the early '70s, Wallie sold his shares of the company and began farming full-time. He had farm and ranch land in Concho and Runnels counties. Wallie also owned and operated the Eola Farm and Ranch Store and Triple J Grocery in Winters. He was the owner/operator of the Eola Café, better known all over as "Wallie's," a local favorite bar in Eola. For 27 years, he dispensed beer and wisdom to each new generation. Wallie loved young people and took great interest in their lives and helped them no matter what they needed. No matter where he went, he always met someone he knew or that knew him. Some people referred to him as a legend and a song was even written about him. Several entertainers including Confederate Railroad, George Strait, Willie Nelson and Mike and Clint Black knew him and occasionally stopped by for a visit. Wallie served in the military for eight years as a member of the National Guard. He loved Czech music and the Havlak Band was one of his favorites. Acting as pallbearers will be Paul Tonne, Randy Lee, Allen, Brady and Trey Weishuhn, Randy Spieker, Kevin Schniers and Mario Gamez. Honorary pallbearers will be John Harris, Robert Dorotik, Raymond and Charles Jurecek, Eugene Spieker and Alfredo Torres II. Wallie was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Billy Joe Dorotik; two nephews, Patrick and Mark Dorotik; and a sister-in-law, Ann Dorotik. Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Rebecca Dorotik; a very special daughter, Staci Lea Dorotik or "Little Wallie" as she is referred to; stepson, Jeffery Todd Rutledge; a much beloved grandson, Jeffrey Allen Rutledge, whom Wallie has raised as a son; two sisters, Anne Marie Moore and husband, Danny, and Elizabeth Jo Renn; two brothers, Leodean and Joe Daniel Dorotik, all of Albuquerque, N.M., as well as numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Thomas was born on July 23, 1936, in Big Spring, Texas, to parents, Thomas Ezra and Johnnie Frances Kiser. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother and sister-in-law, Blanton and Marie Kiser. He is survived by his wife of Tampa, Fla.; seven children, Tommy and Lori of Conroe, Art and Sally Kiser of San Angelo, Curtis and Becky of San Angelo, Melody and Mike Dixon of Waco, Keith and Pam of Katy, Charlene Kiser McDonald of San Angelo and Glenda Kay Kiser of Boerne; nieces, Jan, Barbara and Nona, all of San Angelo; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. BOBBY DON "BOB" DEAVENPORT STANTON - Bobby Don "Bob" Deavenport was born May 1, 1928, to Perry Brown and Sybil Barker Deavenport in Marlow, Okla. He died at Midland Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, March 9, 2004. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 12, at the First United Methodist Church of Stanton with the Rev. Gene Weinette, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Stanton. Bob moved with his family to Martin County in 1937, graduated from Courtney High School in 1944 and attended Texas Tech before serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in the Philippines. He was discharged in 1947 and returned to Martin County where he married Dorothy Renfro on Feb. 14, 1950. He lived in Martin County for the remainder of his life as owner-operator for the family clothing store until 1974 and then as Martin County Farm Bureau agent. In 1981 he was appointed Martin County Judge, elected to the office in 1982 and served for 18 years. He officially retired in 1988 but continued to work as administrator for the Martin County Community Fund (MCCF) as a volunteer. Judge Deavenport's contributions as a public servant to his country and community are lengthy. In his position with MCCF, he was responsible for coordinating the county Food Bank, which assists over 200 families each week with their food and household needs. Under his leadership, the Christmas Cheer Program and Community Aid Program are now part of the MCCF. Services include Christmas dinner and toys for the children, Thanksgiving dinners, assistance with utility and prescription costs and school supplies for qualifying individuals. As volunteer coordinator for the Children¹s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) in three counties - Martin, Glasscock, and Borden - Bob Deavenport assisted in registering over 300 children for health insurance. He was active with the Stoeger-Estes post of the American Legion for over 50 years and served as Adjutant for 18 years. He was involved with the planning of Memorial Day services for 51 years in Martin County. Active in the Boy Scouts of America, he served 28 years as Scoutmaster, Troop and District Committeeman and was honored with the Silver Beaver Award from the Buffalo Trail Council in 1995. His community youth work also included serving six years as Little League Commissioner, coordinating efforts to build the George Shelburne Little League Park and Tommy Walker Field. He was also instrumental in developing the Stanton Summer Recreation Program and raising funds through the Buffalo Booster Club to underwrite much of the costs to build the field house at Buffalo Stadium. Within the community, Bob Deavenport served on the Stanton City Council for six years, was director and president of the Martin County Chamber of Commerce and a charter director and president of the Martin County Industrial Foundation. He served as American Red Cross Chairman for 26 years and on the Old Settlers Finance Committee for 28 years. Bob Deavenport was a member and officer of both the Stanton Lions Evening and Noon Clubs and Salvation Army Board, and was recognized with a Community Builder Award in 1997 from the Stanton Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Stanton. Judge Deavenport was a very active member of the Permian Basin Regional Planning Commission and led state and national initiatives to sustain the ability of small, rural communities to operate their own solid-waste programs. He was appointed by four Texas governors to serve on the Community Block Grant Committee, the longest tenure of any member. His recent awards include the Permian Pioneer Award, presented April 26, 2003, from the Permian Historical Society, Buffalo Booster of the Year 2001-2002, Permian Basin Regional Planning Commission Appreciation 2000, Martin County Chamber of Commerce appreciation 1999, Texas Water Commission Appreciation 1999, and his inclusion as one of 10 members of "The-Greatest Generation of Texans" in 2002, an award co-sponsored by Southwest Airlines and Texas Monthly magazine. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, John Twyman Deavenport of San Diego; and two sisters, Winifred Connell of Dallas and Irene Murfee of Merkel. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy Deavenport of Stanton; a daughter, Pug Parris and her husband, Rickey, of Abilene; a son, Tommy Deavenport and his wife, Gayle, of Austin; one grandson, Brad Parris and his wife, Corissa, of Abilene; and three granddaughters, Kelli Deavenport, Lauren Deavenport and Katie Deavenport, all of Austin. Bob Deavenport is also survived by a sister-in-law, Joyce Deavenport of San Diego, Calif., several nieces and nephews, many friendly people and a few old soreheads.
