Robert Massie Funeral Home April 20 J.N. "POPS" DAY EDEN - J.N."Pops" Day was born on Oct. 27, 1915, in Blanket, Texas, the eighth of 11 children of Jesse Bettis and Nannie Myrtle Beavers Day. He grew up in Blanket, the Plains of Texas, Abernathy, Peterburg and Melvin. He graduated from Melvin High School, earning a track and academic scholarship to Texas Tech. A motorcycle wreck after graduation severely injured his left leg and ended his college dreams. After a long recovery period, he moved to Eden where he worked for his brother, Bettis Benge "Sam" Day at Day-Loveless Hardware as machine shop foreman. On April 2, 1939, he married Martha Jane Caffall in Eden. He partnered with Leonard Jacoby in a sheet metal fabrication and electrical contracting business. Mr. Day also worked as a Texaco distributor and a Magnolia consignee with his father and brother. During World War II, because of his injury, he was unable to serve active military duty; he was a draftsman for airplane plants in Fort Worth and California until the end of the war. Later he worked for IMCO in the aircraft industry in Brady in the early to mid-50s. . As his family grew, he began studying electronics, learning through correspondence and experience to build and repair radios and televisions. During these years he constructed a 70-foot TV tower, built one of the first gas-powered lawnmowers in Eden, and purchased one of the first televisions in town. Mr. Day was a sales and service rep for Motorola, Zenith and Quasar. J.N. served on the Eden ISD School Board, was a deacon in the Eden First Baptist Church and was a charter member of the Eden Volunteer Fire Department. He also served as a Boy Scout leader in Eden, taking part in the Scoutarama at the San Angelo Coliseum where Fess Parker was the featured guest, and helping chaperone the Boy Scout bike ride from Silver, Texas, to Camp Sol Mayer. In 1959 the family moved to Brady where J.N. continued his sales/repair work in various locations around town, establishing a reputation throughout surrounding counties as a skilled and fair businessman who always had a strong cup of coffee available for customers. He became a member of the First Baptist Church of Brady, the Chamber of Commerce, the famed Brady Bulldog Band Boosters and the Lions Club. For many years and many events, J.N. was ready to loan and set up his PA system. Although he eventually had his left leg amputated as a result of the motorcycle accident, he climbed on roofs and towers for many years to improve TV reception for his customers, and he moved his children to and from college and apartments and houses with a smile on his face and his pipe in his mouth. Martha Jane died in 1988, and in 1990 J.N. retired and moved back to Eden to "help" his best buddy Ross and special "GiGi" grow up. He moved his letter back to Eden First Baptist Church and had been a resident of Concho County Health and Rehabilitation Center since 2001. For many years, Pops was a familiar face at Eden school events; he celebrated his 80th birthday in 1995 with a full crowd at one of Eden's football games. To his children and grandchildren, and to many others, he is a legend. He always had time to visit, never complained, could fix anything and never asked for his change back. His favorite afternoons were spent sitting outside, smoking his pipe, watching his nine grandchildren shoot baskets, swing double on the swing set, play football and build things. Every grandchild has a special "created-just-for you" project from Pops; Adrian's shadow box; Kent's biplane and high wing plane; Gretchen's cradle; Ross' bedroom furniture for a giant; Carrye's cradle; Rachel's bedroom wall of built-ins; Jill's Barbie house; Jeremy's entertainment center; Jayci's corner shelf; Jerm's and Jay's stick horses. Pops always had time for anyone who needed help, but he never gave advice unless he was asked. Even after he retired, friends and neighbors would call to see if he was still "working on TVs." He enjoyed his riding lawnmower and his homemade garden tractor, shelling pecans for kids and dogs, and watching the monarch butterflies, squirrels and birds. He loved to watch the world around him. He will live on in our hearts. J.N. was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Martha Jane, five brothers and five sisters. He is survived by his children, William Mark and Betzy Williams Day of Brady, Kathy Jan and Ben Dillon of San Angelo and College Station, Claire Sam and Ben Rucker of Eden, Loma Kay and Allan Clark of Voss, and Sari Lea and Jerry Underwood of Stephenville; his grandchildren, Adrian Louise Clark of Costa Rica, Kent Caffall Day of Brady, Gretchen Leann Dillon of Waco, Ross Day Argo of San Angelo, Carrye Kay and Jake Syma of Lubbock, Rachel Ellen Dillon of Mexico City, Jill Alane Argo of San Angelo, Jeremy Dwayne and Jayci Day Underwood of Stephenville; and a great-granddaughter, Lella Syma of Lubbock. You know my traits, so name a few. My voice was loud, so mention that. I nearly always wore a hat. Both my children kept my love. (They know some times I'm thinking of When we would grin or maybe cry - Heart-to-heart, eye-to-eye We saw what we already knew…) Can't change that if you wanted to. Say my work was pretty fair. Did my best. Did my share. I'm gonna miss a lot of things: My wife, my cats, the early springs, But I won't know it, don't you see? Nor any tears you shed for me! Whenever folks do think my name, I wish they'd let me stay the same, Not change me to another man. Don Childs won't pass this way again. A final offering of respect Would be to praise my intellect. I always was a Democrat. Never was ashamed of that. Didn't go to church or care For opera, baths or losing hair. Spoke my mind more times than not. Fretted, fumed and talked a lot. Dressed the same. Walked for miles. Gave small creatures food and smiles. That's how I should be recalled, - Just like I am, or not at all. (Remains cremated).
