Service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 24, in Robert Massie Riverside Chapel in San Angelo. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Ruby Jeanne was born on March 20, 1920, in Iowa Park, Texas, to Walter Roy and Lucy Sykes Davis. She married Hardin Kettler on July 4, 1942, in San Angelo, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 60 years, Hardin Kettler; and son, Philip Kettler. Survivors include her son, David and wife, Elizabeth, of Austin, Texas; and grandsons, Matthew Kettler and James Kettler, both of Austin, Texas. Ruby Jeanne was a devoted educator. She was with the San Angelo Independent School District for 24 years as a teacher and educational diagnostician and volunteered as a tutor for adult literacy classes after she retired. Robert Massie Funeral Home LANDON THOMAS NIXON ELDORADO - Landon Thomas Nixon of Eldorado was born on April 30, 1984. He went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, April 21, 2004, after a car accident. He was 19 years old. He is survived by his parents, Lester Paul and Kymm Nixon; his sisters, Luticia Nixon and Jonathan Douglas and Brandy and Buddy Key; his grandparents, Leota Nixon of Gatesville, David and Barbara Behrens of Eldorado, and Jim and Patti Corley of Ben Wheeler; and great-grandparents, Emma and Roscoe Behrens of Kerrville and Allene Brown of Brownwood. He is survived by uncles and aunts, Jorgi Stanford of California, Reginald and Mary Lagow of Winters, Laura Nowlin of Eldorado, Leslie and Jeff Martin of Illinois, Lou Ann and Alex Perez of Mission, Reuben and Linell Nixon of New Mexico, Matthew and Tammy Nixon of Gatesville, Kyla and Fred Gust of San Angelo, Jay and Becca Behrens of Aqua Dulce, David and Debra Behrens of Kerrville, Lee and Rhonda Behrens of Kerrville, and Jim and Patrick Corley of Ben Wheeler. He is survived by several close cousins, Jennifer and April Nixon, Chance, Colton and Hallie Behrens and Matt Greenwood, as well as many other cousins. He is also survived by many friends from Eldorado and College Station, many of which have visited and supported his family in the last few days. Landon was preceded in death by his grandfather, Lester Nixon; and his cousin, Justin Behrens. Landon graduated from Eldorado High School in 2003. In high school he participated and lettered in band and football. He was the smallest on his football team but had the biggest heart. He also participated in track and loved to run. He played on the golf team in high school and this was his passion. He achieved academic excellence one year in high school. Landon loved everyone and everyone loved him. He always had a smile on his face. He loved to make sure everyone was taken care of, young or old, and wanted everyone to be happy and loved. His face, voice, mannerisms and laugh will always be with us. Landon was a member of the Eldorado Church of Christ. His future plans were to pursue education in metal fabrication and spend his lifetime playing golf. Service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 25, at the First Baptist Church of Eldorado. Officiating will be David Templeton, Ray Don McIntosh and Andy Anderson. Life is Christ's gift. Landon gave life also in death, not to save all sinners as Jesus did, but to give earthly life. Clayton was killed in action while serving in Southern Iraq with the 2nd Armored Calvary Regiment. Clayton has been posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his bravery and dedication to his country. Gilbreath Funeral Home HELEN GABBERT LEE SAN ANGELO - Helen Gabbert Lee, 99, of Tulare, Calif., passed away Tuesday, April 20, 2004. Helen was born to Sarah F. Crunk-Gabbert and William F. Gabbert in Eola, Texas, on Jan. 8, 1905, where she was raised and educated. She was valedictorian of her senior class. Helen married Barney Green Lee of Eden, Texas. They owned the Barney Lee Oil Co. and farmed and ranched in the Eola area while raising two children. Helen is the last of her generation of Crunks of Paint Rock, Texas, Gabberts of Arkansas and the G.Y. Lee family of Texas. The William F. Gabberts were among the founders of Eola. Her mother, Sarah Crunk-Gabbert, being the Postmaster, renamed the town of Jordan to Eola. Helen was preceded in death by her only sister, Fay Belle Jones, a former teacher and Postmaster of Eola, and her parents. Survivors include a daughter, Carlene Lee Westbrook and her husband Lynn, of Tulare, Calif.; and a son, Truman Lee and his wife, Billie, of Breckenridge, Texas. Kerbow Funeral Home April 26 ELO E. HOELSCHER SAN ANGELO - Elo E. Hoelscher, 87, died Saturday, April 24, 2004, in a local care center. He was a loving husband, Daddy, Grandpa and Popo. He married Magdaline Matthiesen on June 30, 1942, in Rowena, Texas. The couple farmed in the Eola and Mereta area and retired to San Angelo in 1984. They were members of Holy Angels Catholic Church. In his retirement years, Elo continued to enjoy any and all domino games with family and friends. Elo enlisted in the Army Air Corps at Goodfellow Field on Jan. 15, 1942, and served two years in the North Atlantic Theatre of Operations with the 70th Squadron. He served on the Mereta Co-op Gin Board of Directors, was a charter member of the Mereta Lions Club and a life member of the DAV. Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Magdaline; three daughters and their spouses, Janice and Stanley Lange of Miles, Linda and Larry Kujawski of San Angelo and Ann and Harold Hoelscher of St. Lawrence; two sons and their wives, Larry and Pam Hoelscher of Odessa and Tommy and Karla Hoelscher of St. Lawrence. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren; one step-grandson; 11 great-grandchildren and two step-great-granddaughters. Also surviving Elo are four brothers, Elmer of Sunnyvale, Calif., Melvin of St. Louis, Mo., Willard of Hollister, Calif., and Bill of Salt Lake City, Utah; and three sisters, Bernice Hosack of Richland, Wash., and Grace Gully and Mabel Namken of San Angelo. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Susan Kay; his parents; a brother, Monroe; and two sisters, Cleola Hoelscher and Laurine Bjorn. "Bud" Frink, age 85, of Ballinger, died Sunday morning, April 25, 2004, in the U.S. Armed Force's Retirement Home in Gulfport, Miss. Bud was born on Feb. 17, 1919, in Battle Creek, Iowa, to Bert Day and Viola Fern Nailor Frink. He graduated from high school in Sioux City, and later joined the U.S. Navy in 1939. He served on the USS Indianapolis from 1939 to 1944. They were stationed at Pearl Harbor but happened to be out of port the Sunday morning when Japan bombed. In 1944 he qualified for diving school. It was at this time he met Sylvia Little. They married on May 17, 1945, in Rockville, Md. He served on several other ships as a diver until he retired in 1959 as a Chief Warrant Officer. After his navy service, Bud worked for three years with the Merchant Marines, and later with the Game Commission in Nebraska. After moving to Texas he worked as a prison guard at Ramsey's, later opening his leather shop, The Hackamore Shop in San Angelo, moving it to Ballinger in 1973 and ran the shop until 1996 when he moved to the retirement home in Mississippi. Bud was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia, in 1995. His parents and one sister, Dorothy Mohr also preceded him. He is survived by a brother, Bert Frink of Gibbon, Neb.; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Jimmy and Carolyn Little of Ballinger and Willadene Varnadore of San Angelo. Kauffman passed away Saturday, April 24, 2004, at home in Satellite Beach, Fla. She was born Ruth Irene McGill on July 16, 1940, in Rankin, Texas, to Martha Florence and A.B. "Bruce" McGill, both deceased. She was preceded in death by her beloved older siblings, Nancy Grace McGill and Jesse Bryan Farris. She is survived by her husband, Richard L. Kauffman, originally from Cuba, N.Y.; her brother, Emmett Bruce McGill and his wife, Cheryl, both of Satellite Beach; two sons, Jack P. Kauffman and his wife, Kathryn, of Houston, Texas, and Jason P. Rife and his wife, Sonja, of Richmond, Va.; a stepdaughter, Kelly A. Kauffman-Lang of Orlando, Fla.; three grandchildren, Alexander N. Kauffman, Thomas J. Kauffman and Margaret M. Rife; and eight nieces and nephews. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Texas Christian University, she worked for Xerox Corporation for several years as a research chemist and then later as a patent agent. She and her husband were longtime supporters of the local community. They owned Miguel's Posada del Rey Restaurant in Melbourne, Fla., in partnership with Emmett McGill. She and her husband managed the restaurant for 25 years. They retired from the restaurant business in 2002. Brownlie-Maxwell Funeral Home CHARLES "CHICK" RODDY WOMACK MIDLAND - Charles Womack passed away on Sunday, April 25, 2004, in Sempercare Hospital in Midland. He was born on Feb. 26, 1926, in St. Paul, Texas, to William and Ruth Womack. He was raised and educated in Aransas Pass, Texas. Later he entered the Army 101st Airborne as a paratrooper during World War II. After his discharge he attended Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, on an athletic scholarship. Later he received his Masters degree from A&I University in Kingsville, Texas. He was a coach and principal in Ozona, Texas, for 35 years. He also began the track program there. After his retirement he moved to Fort Stockton, Texas. He was an active member in various organizations such as Aransas Lodge No. 1108, Alpine Commandery No. 90, Scottish Rite, the Order of Eastern Star and the First United Methodist Church of Fort Stockton, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Ruth Womack; brother, William Womack Jr.; and sisters, Florence Rowe and Katherine Smith. Anita married Kenneth Lloyd Lewis in 1944; he preceded her in death in 1998. Anita worked as an educational secretary for SAISD for 20 years, at a job that she thoroughly enjoyed. She was also active in various service, social and music organizations throughout the community and her local church, including Bible studies and Emmaus groups. After retiring from SAISD, she was active in Shannon Auxiliary for more than 10 years. A daughter, Janey Jo Balkum Limule, his mother and aunt and uncle preceded him in death. He married Gena Faye Duke Balkum on April 23, 1976. He was employed as a project manager at Goodfellow Air Force Base for 23 years before retirement. John was a member and deacon of Evangel Temple Assembly of God since 1982. He loved to work in and around the church. J.J. loved his grandkids and great-grandkids and had a passion for those who called him "Pappy." He was the most unselfish person and such a good man, and oh how he loved the Lord. When he would become aware of someone in need he always found a way to provide. J.J. was happiest when he was catching fish. J.J. leaves to cherish his memories; his wife, Gena Faye Jackson of San Angelo; two brothers, R.L. Johnson's Funeral Home JACK BAGGETT OZONA - With family and loved ones by his side, Jack Baggett Sr. passed from this life on Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at his home in Ozona, Texas, at the age of 82. He was born in San Angelo, Texas, on July 11, 1921, to Ele Bright Baggett Jr. and Alyce Odom Baggett, pioneer Crockett County ranching families. Growing up in Ozona, Mr. Baggett graduated from Ozona High School and was among the first in Ozona to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. He attended Texas A&M University and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, achieving the rank of staff sergeant. On Dec. 26, 1941, Jack married Billie Gene Linthicum at the Linthicum ranch home near Barnhart. They ranched in Reagan, Pecos and Crockett counties where he took a great deal of pride in his Rambouillet sheep. In addition, he owned and managed The Baggett Insurance Agency until 1983. Mr. Baggett was a devoted member of the Ozona United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities including chairman of the administrative board, lay leader and choir member. In addition to serving his church, Mr. Baggett was past president of the Ozona Lions Club, Crockett County Hospital Board, Ozona Country Club, OB Trap Company and was charter secretary of the Ozona Chamber of Commerce. He was also a past director of Ozona Wool & Mohair Company, Ozona Community Center and had served on the Crockett County Tax Appraisal Board. Most recently, he served as one of the organizing directors of Crockett National Bank and serves as a trustee of the Massie Memorial Foundation. In 1998, Mr. Baggett was voted Ozona's "Unsung Hero" by the Ozona Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Baggett was known to all as an honest, caring and gentle man. Above all, however, he will be best remembered for his unfailing love and devotion to Billie Gene, his wife of 60 years, and the loving care he provided her during the last years of her life. In addition to the enjoyment received from the Baggett Ranch south of Ozona and the Alto, N.M., vacation home, Jack's greatest pleasure was flying. He was an avid aviation enthusiast earning an instrument rating and owning and flying his Bonanza until just a few years ago. He and Billie Gene especially enjoyed flying to Ruidoso where they played golf and enjoyed the mountains. Mr. Baggett was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Billie Gene, in 2001; daughter, Rebekah "Baby Sister" Baggett; grandson, Rhett Pierce Miller; brother, Ele Baggett of Lufkin; sisters, Rebekah Baggett West and Vivian Baggett Clayton of Ozona. He will be deeply missed by those who survive him including daughters, Betty Baggett Miller and husband, Pierce, of San Angelo and Joanie Baggett Bradley of McKinney; and son, Jack Baggett Jr. and wife, Jodie, of Ozona. Affectionately known as Granddaddy, Mr. Baggett is survived by grandchildren, Camille Miller Yale and husband, Ed, of Austin, Clay Bradley of Whitefish, Mont., Chad Bradley of Austin, Chase Bradley of McKinney and Philip Baggett of Ozona. She was born in Christoval, Texas, on Oct. 31, 1916, to Frank Elmore Chapple and DLula Shepherd Chapple. She was better known to many as "Sue." She graduated from high school in Christoval and attended Abilene Christian College. She graduated from Shannon School of Nursing as a registered nurse. She married Melvin Davis "Pete" McBurnett on April 11, 1942. While living in Odessa, she worked at the Odessa Medical Center Hospital and was a substitute teacher for the Ector County ISD. She is survived by her daughter, Suzanne Johnson, and husband, Sid, of Eldorado, and one granddaughter, Laura Leddy and husband, Brian, of Mansfield. She is also survived by Pauline Nelson of Abilene, Frank E. Chapple of Slaton and Sarah Jarrett and husband, William, of Hobbs, N.M., along with numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Sue was preceded in death by her husband, Pete; her parents; brother, H.A. Chapple; and sister, Martha Wingfield. Sue will be remembered by many for her care as their nurse. He was born on Feb. 25, 1914, to parents Fred and Emma Jaebker in Decatur, Ind. He graduated from South Side High School in Fort Wayne, Ind., in 1936. Jeb worked for General Electric Fort Wayne prior to enlisting in the U.S. Air Force in 1942. He flew 25 missions over Germany as a Bombardier in B-17's, and was stationed with the 100th Bomb Group in the Eighth Air Force in England. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross. After returning to the States, he was stationed at Concho Air Base as an instructor. Jeb met his wife, Jeanie Cullen, in San Angelo and was married on Feb. 10, 1946. He was discharged from the service in December 1946 with the rank of Captain. He worked for both Harris Luckett and Foxworth Hardware stores for six years, and then 26-plus years at Pinkies Liquor Store. Jeb was an avid golfer and played many years with friends at Riverside Golf Course. He and his wife, Jeanie, were not blessed with any children, but she thoroughly enjoyed her kindergarten school. She taught many children from San Angelo and in surrounding areas with her exceptional talent for teaching young children. Her sister, Grace Cullen, and Mrs. Appleton assisted her. During her lifetime she worked in several area businesses, before retiring from Bill Ragsdale Tire Co. in 1985. She also served in the Shannon Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Ed Bailey, as well as her parents and one sister, May Wyatt. When her sons were young, she served as a den mother, and she loved sewing, camping and shopping. He operated Sanchez Welding and Construction for over 30 years and was also proprietor of La Mexicana Restaurant. In his earlier years, he owned and operated a sheep-shearing contract business in which he took over the management after his father's retirement. Square was an active member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Sonora, where he donated his time, resources and skill. He was very involved in community projects, which reflected his love for Sonora. He showed breeding sheep through FFA, and, after high school, attended Midland College. He returned to Wall to join his father in Bean & Kiesling Trucking Company. Glenn married Jan Boggs in 1992. Glenn's love of the trucking business continued for 40 years as he and his wife continued to own and operate Bean Trucking. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Ambrose Catholic Church. Hayes left this life on Friday, April 30, 2004, at his home in San Saba, Texas, at the age of 72. He was the first born of twin boys on Oct. 27, 1931, in San Saba, Texas, the son of Elbert Taylor Lee Hayes and Juanita Mildred McDaniel Hayes. At six months the family moved to Algerita and in 1941 on to Brady, Texas, where he graduated from high school in 1949. One more move to San Angelo, Texas, where he attended San Angelo College before transferring to Texas Tech and graduation. His education was interrupted by a tour of duty in the U.S. Army, where he served at Killeen Base as part of a unit with the Atomic Energy Commission. While at Tech, he played center and linebacker on the Red Raiders football team briefly in '52 and finished 1954-55. He continued to support Texas Tech athletic programs as a member of the Texas Tech Alumni Association and the Double T Lettermans Club. On July 5, 1957, Hilton Hayes and Josephine Turner were married in San Angelo, Texas. He spent his career with the John Deere Company and retired as general sales manager of the Kansas City Branch in December 1984. Hilton's second love was farming and ranching, and he and Jo returned to San Saba where he invested his life in those endeavors. In 2001 Hayes Farms was awarded by the Texas Department of Agriculture a Family Land Heritage 100 Years Certificate of Honor for a century or more of continuous ownership and operation as a family agricultural enterprise. Hilton also was proud to be head counselor of Camp Happy, an annual dove hunting extravaganza now in its 24th year. The hunters, affectionately known as "The Boys," looked forward every year to their return trip to San Saba and the special time with friends and family at Camp Happy. He also served on several local community and utility boards. He and Jo were active members of the First Baptist Church of San Saba. He is survived by his wife, Jo Hayes, of San Saba; two sons, Dean Hayes and his wife, Kelly Ann, of Fort Myers, Fla., and Kelly F. Hayes and his wife, Kathy, of Alvin; grandchildren, Alyssa, Lindsay, Lacy, Dacey, Dustin and Lana; one brother, Hillie T. Hayes of San Saba; one sister, Wanda Lancaster of Austin; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mildred Lee Sessom. She returned to Sterling to marry Clyde Ross Foster on Jan. 11, 1947. Margaret worked with her husband, Ross, in the ranching industry and their hardware store, Ross Hardware and Funeral Home, until the time of her death. Always involved in community activities, Margaret served as a member of countless boards and committees. She was active in the First United Methodist Church, The Order of the Eastern Star, the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Auxiliary, Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, National Cattlemen's Association, Texas Cattlewomen's Association, Sterling Alumni Association, Cousins Bridge Club, Garden City Bridge Club, and her favorite, the Noratadata Club. Margaret enjoyed traveling the world with Ross and their many friends. But she truly loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. They moved to San Angelo in 1946. She met and married Richard Roberts in 1999. Erin took great pride in her home and family. She loved the outdoors. She had a gift for cooking, crocheting, quilting and gardening, which she shared with friends and family. She was retired from the San Angelo School District after 22 years in food services. Erin will be sadly missed by all. Her outlook on life was inspirational. A private service will be held at the convenience of her children and grandchildren. He married Frankie Hannum on July 11, 1935. He was the second child of three. He had an older sister, Florence Short Self, and a younger brother, James Alton Short, deceased. Curtis and Frankie had one son, Roy Wayne Short. Curtis was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Frankie Short, who passed away Sept. 27, 2003. He worked for several prominent ranchers in Crockett, Irion and Schleicher counties. His last job was as ranch manager of the Fay Baugh Spence Ranch for 36 years. He single-handedly ran the ranch, did the books, and took care of maintenance and improvements. He was a very hardworking and vital part of the ranch. Even in his spare time, Curtis kept busy. He participated in rodeos and polo in his younger years, even traveling to Florida for polo matches. In later years, Curtis and Frankie enjoyed fishing at Amistad Lake near Del Rio, Texas. Curtis built a houseboat for family use at Amistad, complete with living area. It saw many fun vacations. After retiring from ranching, he and Frankie moved to the Tisdale Ranch to act as caretakers for Morty Mertz. He and Frankie always had a garden, and were very generous with their crops. It wasn't long before they each had their own gardens because they were convinced the other didn't know what he or she was doing. She married Carlos Edward "Don" Payne on Oct. 13, 1934, in San Angelo, Texas. They moved to Madera Valley in 1936, along with the Sprague family, to farm. Mrs. Payne was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker, school nurse, member of the Church of Christ, a Girl Scout leader at one time, taught Sunday school and helped with many community activities. Merle was happiest when caring for others. She was caring and helpful to the people of the Balmorhea area. Merle enjoyed the Community Senior Center and painting ceramics. She loved to garden and raise beautiful flowers outside and pot flowers inside the house. Merle was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Pete Sprague; her husband, Don Payne; one daughter, Donna Sue; and one granddaughter, Kimberly Webb Carr.
