Bruce was born in Sioux City but raised a little north up the Missouri River in the farming town of Mobridge, S.D., during the Great Depression of 1929. He had a close-knit family with two brothers and two sisters. At 18, Bruce signed up for what would become his lifelong career in the U.S. Air Force. In the early years of his career, Bruce was stationed in Alaska and El Paso, and it was there that he met his fellow airmen and friend, Nicho Negrete. Nicho took Bruce home on furlough to Kansas City to his family's home, and it was there that Nicho introduced Bruce to his beautiful young sister-in-law, Marie. Bruce was smitten immediately and started corresponding from Texas. He won the heart of Marie and they recently celebrated 50 years of marriage in a well-attended family reunion here in San Angelo last summer. Together they had five outstanding, loving children born to them in different corners of the world as the family moved about to follow Bruce's career. Bruce's oldest son, Scott, was born in El Paso soon before Bruce and Marie transferred to Morocco. Next, they welcomed twins, Susan and Sharon, born stateside in Colorado Springs at ENT. Before leaving for Turkey, Bruce welcomed his next child, Barbara Hamilton, also born in Colorado Springs. Their youngest son, Brian, was born in 1960 while Bruce was stationed overseas. Marie was back living with her family at that time in Kansas City. Bruce drew his worldwide travels to a close with his final assignment in San Angelo and took retirement here in 1974. Since then he has lived a bountiful life as a loving parent and grandparent and worked as a vigilant volunteer for the Tom Green County Republican Party. Bruce could also be seen at the local PX joking with friends in the community who had come by to get groceries or hear the latest joke. Bruce is survived by his widow, Marie; his five children (four of whom make homes in Austin), 10 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. Bruce Hamilton lived a wonderful life. His journey was long as he traveled far and wide across the world. His kind heart touched many along the way. Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Friday, June 18, at Johnson Funeral Home with a rosary at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 19, by the Rev. "BUSTER" LEWIS June 7, 1921 - June 18, 2004 DEL RIO - Adult life started early for Buster, when his father passed away when he was only 9 years old, leaving him to help support his mom and five siblings during the Depression years. He worked long and hard doing any odd labor he could find in the community of Holt, in San Saba County. He continued this work ethic throughout his lifetime. He served in World War II from 1941 to 1945 in the Pacific Theater as a radio operator. Returning home to San Angelo, he married Nelda Williams in 1946, and from that marriage had three children: David Hoyt, Sharon and Anita. He was an apprentice glazer for the Strickland Brothers. He then worked for Skinny Lupton at Angelo Glass before opening his own business, Ace Glass and Mirror, in 1957. Buster was one of the last in San Angelo to actually make his own mirrors. The family then moved to Del Rio in 1968, where he continued glazing. He married Maria "Nena" Perez Mercado and her children, Grace and Jimmy, in 1976. They owned and operated Arrow Glass starting in 1978 until his retirement in 1987. He started working for Rick Isenhour in 1989 and continued working until shortly before his death. With the death of Maria in 1994, he worked harder than ever. He had the ability to build or fix absolutely anything. He was especially talented with electrical work. Even with only a sixth-grade education, Buster was self-taught on all that was required in his glazier and construction activities. Buster was "Mr. Fix-it." He especially loved to work at his three favorite places, Blimpie's, Flamingo's and Golden Chick, which included all the employees whom he considered his friends. He often was seen on top of the roof working on the neon lights at the young age of 81. Of course, his pride and joy was the Isenhour ice plant which he maintained, babied, coaxed and invented any necessary part that it took to operate at the optimum capacity. Buster's second home was the donut shop, with a cup of coffee, friends and a string of jokes. Buster never met a stranger; a smile was always on his face, and a joke or two always followed. He loved to laugh and made sure others laughed with him. Buster is survived by his son, David Hoyt Lewis, and his wife, Betty, of Presidio; daughters, Sharon Lewis Reidy and husband Rick of Mertzon; and Anita Lewis Sonberg of Dripping Springs; stepdaughter Grace Mercado-Marx and husband Ken of Fort Worth; and stepson Jimmy Mercado of San Antonio. Grandchildren are Delane Abbot and husband Craig; LaDon Erskine and husband David; Jerri Parry, Jason Wankowski, Cynthia Mercado, Richard Mercado and fiancé, Priscilla Moreno and Annette Mercado. He is survived by his sisters, Ruth Cunningham and Lucille Hardman, and eight great-grandchildren. Buster was preceded in death by siblings Nell Ball, Winston Lewis and Juanita Frost, and his second wife, Maria Lewis. Pallbearers are Jason Wankowski, David Erskine, Craig Abbott, Richard Mercado, Richard Isenhour and Rick Isenhour. He also voluntarily helped direct repairs of many structures that were damaged in San Angelo by the storms of 1995 and also in other disasters. Nevada looked forward eagerly to the Millenial Reign of Christ. At that time the resurrected ones will be re-united with many loved ones and their families. Johnson's Funeral Home June 26 LILLIAN KATHLEEN BEASLEY SAN ANGELO - On June 24, 2004, we lost our matriarch, Lillian Kathleen Beasley. She was born on Oct. 18, 1914. After losing her father at age 6, she quit school in the eighth grade to go to work, aiding her mother in the care of her younger sisters as they struggled through the Great Depression. She was the wife to a World War II soldier and the mother of a Vietnam draftee. She was a woman who didn't need liberation because she had always refused to be subjugated. Resuming her formal education in her fifties, she became a devoted nurse to the mentally ill. She loved dancing to classic country music, fishing, reading and most of all, her family. Whether she was Momma, Grandma, GiGi or Aunt Lillian, she blessed all those who knew and loved her with a concerned ear, an easy smile and hard- won wisdom. She taught us never to allow anyone else to define our worth, importance or priority. And because her love was unconditional, all in her family knew that whatever the circumstance or time of day, whether we had joy or tragedy to share, we had a home and a kiss and a smile waiting at her house. She passed as she had lived, in her own good time. We are pleased her struggles are over because frailty didn't suit her. She was able to give her last kiss to her beloved daughter, Carol, her best friend through life and her constant caregiver in her final years. We cry today for ourselves, and take comfort in knowing someday she will welcome us all home again with a kiss and a smile. Funeral service will be graveside at 10 a.m. Monday, June 28, in Fairmount Cemetery. Visitation is at Johnson's Funeral Home. She is survived by three children, Charles Beasley and wife Karnella, Carl Beasley, and Carol McLaughlin and husband Paul; three grandchildren, Stephen McLaughlin and wife Anissa, Kristen Dunlap and husband David, and Chase Beasley; four great-grandchildren, Elijah Conner McLaughlin, Addison Clair McLaughlin, Grace Lillian Dunlap and Sarah Elizabeth Dunlap; several nieces and nephews; and special caregiver, Jeri Jorgenson.
