The latter included an assignment as leader of cattle and sheep production systems research on the Texas Range Station. Dr. Huss joined the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 1967 and served in various capacities until his retirement in 1987. He was range management officer on field projects in Monterrey, Mexico, and Bariloche, Argentina, from 1967 to 1973; and pasture and forage officer at Recife, Brazil, from 1973 to 1974. He moved to Cairo, Egypt, in 1974 to become regional range and fodder crop officer for the FAO Near East Region. He also simultaneously acted as regional animal production and health officer for two years, and he was seconded to the FAO European Region for one month per year for several years as a consultant to a project in Turkey. He was appointed Regional Animal Production Officer for Latin America and the Caribbean with headquarters at Santiago, Chile, in 1980, a post he maintained until retirement. Dr. Huss worked in 42 countries in the Near East, Middle East, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. He was instrumental in the formulation and implementation of various activities related to animal production in general, environmental conservation, small-animal species production, range and cultivated pasture management, fodder crop production and conservation, training, research and extension. He was experienced in animal management along with the practices required for providing adequate nutrition. Regarding natural resources, Dr. Huss advocated that the needs of the present could be met without compromising those of the future. He participated in various missions and activities in the Near East Region aimed at instigating action to combat the desertification of rangeland, and he successfully initiated some pilot projects accordingly. Believing that a cadre of trained technicians is essential to development, Dr. Huss formulated and conducted various national and regional training courses in such subjects as range management and forage conservation and in goat, hair sheep, rabbit and guinea pig production technologies and extension methodologies. Training manuals were prepared in connection with them. In 1980, Dr. Huss initiated a "Small Animals for Small Farms" program for Latin America and the Caribbean designed to improve the livelihoods of some 13 million small-farm families. This entailed activities related to promotion, project identification, and formulation and training at both the technician and producer levels. He introduced the use of self-teaching manuals as a means of transferring fundamental husbandry technologies to producers, and he formed small-animal production cooperative networks in the Caribbean and Andean zones to hasten development. He also formed the International Working Group for the Promotion of Rangelands in Latin America and initiated supporting activities. These included training courses for university professors in South America, co-authorship of a text, "Principios de Manejo de Praderas Naturales," and the formation of national working groups. Dr. Huss authored or co- authored more than 100 publications written in either English or Spanish. Some of his publications were translated into Portuguese, Turkish, French and Arabic. He spoke English and Spanish and had a working knowledge of Portuguese. He was a recipient of Texas A&M University's Memorial Student Center Appreciation and Distinguished Service Awards, and he was named the 1966 College of Agriculture Honor Professor, a recognition awarded by students. The Society for Range Management gave him its Outstanding Achievement and Service Award in 1975 and its Fellow Award in 1979. He was placed in his high school's Hall of Fame in 1984, and he was appointed to the National Research Council's Panel on Microlivestock in 1986. After retirement, Donald returned to Menard. He was active in promoting the historical values of his hometown. He was a member of Masonic Lodge, Business Men's Association, Friends of Fort McKavett, American Meat Goat Association and several honor societies.
