Ellis Funeral Home ARNULFO "ARNOLD" GARCIA SAN ANGELO - Arnulfo "Arnold" Garcia was born the year Woodrow Wilson and other world leaders were trying to restore order in the chaos wrought by World War I. In his lifetime, Arnulfo "Arnold" Garcia Sr. would see plenty of chaos and relatively little peace, a fate he shared with other members of his generation. Born Dec. 14, 1919, Garcia, a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, of complications from diabetes. In his time, Garcia experienced a Great Depression, participated in a world war and raised a family through a Cold War that flashed hot in Korea and Vietnam. He volunteered for the Army shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, but was rejected for medical reasons. In 1944, he was drafted and went on to participate in the campaign to liberate the Philippine Japanese islands when the war ended. He served with occupation forces in Korea until his release from the Army in 1946. Returning to his native San Angelo, he married Bertha Salazar Castorena on May 25, 1947. That union endured bad times and celebrated good ones for 57 years. During his life, Garcia lived through boom to bust economies and survived a Texas that was hostile at times to this native son. Though his formal education was limited to the sixth grade and business college courses, he was an avid reader and consumer of news. Garcia was an active, enthusiastic participant in San Angelo's political and community life. His working life included backbreaking stoop labor in Texas cotton fields and selling office supplies and furniture. He was a salesman of the old school who would loosen a prospect's wallet with a joke, a quip or a West Texas observation of life in general and the weather in particular. Garcia subscribed wholeheartedly to the adage, "The customer is always right." He loved politics and was involved in the community's political life throughout the 1950s and '60s. He participated in the Viva Kennedy campaign of 1960 and the Viva Johnson campaign of 1964. He fought in the War on Poverty by serving on the Tom Green County's Council of Governments. Garcia was also a frequent grand juror and just as frequently called upon for service on task forces and advisory commissions. He was a member and past president of the San Angelo Southside Lion's Club and a past member of the American GI Forum, a group dedicated to promoting veterans' fights that later broadened its scope to push for the civil rights of Mexican Americans. He was among volunteer parishioners who built the San Jose Mission on Randolph Street in San Angelo by showing up at the construction site after work and on weekends. Garcia was also an avid fisherman who loved the water and loved his boats. He was a formidable poker player. Like all of us, he was the whole of a big sum of parts. Those he was preceded in death by include his father, Crecencio Garcia; his mother, Concepcion Garcia; and by two brothers, Crecencio and Fred Garcia. Survivors include his wife, Bertha, of San Angelo; three children, Arnulfo "Arnold" Jr. of Austin and his wife, Linda, Cynthia Ann Cano of Corpus Christi and her husband, Manuel, and Becky Torres and her husband, Alfonso, of San Angelo. God looked around his garden, and He found an empty space, He then looked down upon this earth and saw your tired face. He put his arms around you And lifted you to rest. God's garden must be beautiful; He always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, he knew you were in pain He knew you would never get well upon this earth again. So he closed your weary eyelids and whispered "Peace by thine." He then took you up to heaven, with hands gentle and so kind. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone. For part of us went with you the day God called you home. We love you, Mama. Kerbow Funeral Home August 6 JOHNNIE B. MADDIGAN SAN ANGELO - Johnnie B. Gerald Fielder, missionary teacher and retired Baylor University faculty member, passed away Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, in San Angelo after an illness of several months. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, in First Baptist Church Leavell Chapel, and also at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, in Truett Seminary Chapel in Waco, with Dr. Kyle Reese officiating both services. Professor Fielder was born in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, China, on April 26, 1926, to Maudie and Wilson Field, missionaries to China. Because of a strong family tradition, he entered Baylor University in 1944, beginning preparation for his chosen field of teaching. He received degrees from Baylor University, B.A. in 1948; Vanderbilt University, M.A. 1949; Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, B.D. 1954; and American University, Ph.D. 1969. Mr. Fielder was an instructor of political science, Baylor University in 1949-51; appointed Southern Baptist missionary to Seinan Gakin University, Fukuoka, Japan, 1954, and was a faculty member there 23 years. Upon returning to Baylor in 1976, he served in the Political Science Department until his retirement in 1997. At Baylor, with a special love for his birth country China, Japan and his own United States of America, he broadened his interest to other nations. He became founding director of the Asian Studies Program, helping to implement the teaching of Japanese and Chinese languages, and the establishment of faculty/student exchange programs between Baylor and several universities in Asia. Always optimistic, his optimism was grounded in a firm belief in the ultimate victory of love over hate, good over evil. And though there will always be "Wars and Rumors of Wars," he believed there is a moral responsibility to be seeking peace and justice, good things for our neighbors here and in other lands, and as well as oneself. Recognizing that his own flawed humanity was common ground with others, he lived his life as a teacher, yet even more so as a learner, a disciple of Christ, striving to be a bridge of understanding between cultures, a channel of God's grace and love toward others. One of his dearest pleasures during retirement was the ongoing contacts with his former students and other friends and colleagues here and abroad. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilson and Maudie Albritton Fielder; son, Patrick Dale Fielder; brothers, Wilson Fielder Jr. and Richard Byron Fielder; and a sister, Golda Jean Fielder Moore. Survivors include his wife, Jo Beth McKneely Fielder, and daughter, Dorcas Elaine Fielder, both of San Angelo; sister, Florence McKinney and husband L.G. of San Angelo; and brothers-in-law, Dr. Robert A. Moore of Houston, and Jack W. McKneely and wife Claudia of Georgetown. Many cousins, and numerous nieces and nephews, were cherished by their Uncle Gerald and had on numerous occasions given him much affection; also a host of student friends and colleagues here and abroad. The family thanks each one for their friendship through the years and prayerful support, especially during his final illness. To his physicians, Dr. Barnett and Dr. Cheruku, the family expresses deep appreciation for their compassionate care. With Dr. Barnett there was good-natured banter about the Red Raiders vs. Baylor Bears or life in San Angelo vs. life in Waco; with Dr. Cheruku, stimulating comments about Indian politics. Both relationships gave a warm, human face to medicine. Heartfelt gratitude extends also to the staffs of 5 North and ICU at Shannon Hospital and staff of SCCI, who cared faithfully for him during his final hospitalization with caring sensitivity; and to our caring church family of First Baptist Church, who have surrounded us with their love and prayers. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Baylor University Global Christian Ventures Fund; First Baptist Church of San Angelo, Mission Offering Fund; Baptist Memorials Retirement Community in San Angelo; Habitat for Humanity or other beloved charity. Johnson's Funeral Home PHYLLIS ANN BROWN SAN ANGELO - Phyllis Ann Brown entered her Lord's house on Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, while on a three-month holiday in Hawaii. She knew she was losing a struggle with liver cancer and elected to spend her remaining strength there with several friends and her family. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Douglas Brown of San Angelo, Texas; and two sons, Dr. Craig Brown and Dr. Morgan Brown of Midland, Texas, and Teresa Ashley of Artesia, N.M.; and seven grandchildren. As a student at Fort Morgan High School in Colorado, she caught the attention of her teachers. Taking a freshman exploratory home economics class, she impressed her teacher enough that the teacher suggested to her high school junior son that Phyllis was a girl he should meet and seriously pursue. They were married five years later. She entered nurses' training after graduation, but took leave to spend nine months with her new husband in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. During that time, she earned her instructor's license in hula dancing and worked at Queen's Hospital. After a short nursing career, she began raising a family - a responsibility that consumed her life from then on. She was the epitome of a good church member and P.E.O. sister. For several years in Midland, she used her talent with the piano to accompany a duet of singers, and on the organ she entertained baseball fans. Her work with a crochet needle, however, was the talent that gave her family the most pleasure, and all of her children and most of the grandchildren have an afghan or sweater made by her hands. Gifts memorializing Phyllis should be sent to either Cottey College, 1000 W. Austin St., Nevada, MO, 64772, or to the American Cancer Society. A memorial service for Phyllis Brown will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, at United Methodist Church in San Angelo, Texas. ALEENE L. DONALEY SAN ANGELO - Aleene L. McCoy Funeral Home JAMES "JIM" McKNIGHT DAVIS STERLING CITY - James "Jim" McKnight Davis passed away Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at his home in Sterling City. It is appropriate that Jim end his life on the same home soil where he had his beginning 64 years ago. Jim had the deepest love and respect for Sterling County and his family heritage. Jim's grandparents, Henry and Frances Kellis Davis, were one of the earliest families to settle Sterling County in 1889. This pioneer spirit and their devotion to family lives on in all the Davis descendants. Jim was born Jan. 4, 1940, and attended schools in Sterling City. In 1963, he graduated from Texas Christian University. He married Kay Woodward in 1969, and even though she was a Tennessee girl, she was quickly drawn into the Davis clan and their love of Texas. Kay and Jim lived at the home place of his parents, Jeff and Gladie Davis, and continued the family traditions together. Jim ranched in Sterling County for over 40 years. As a couple, Jim and Kay always welcomed family and carried on the gatherings of "Daddy Jeff" and "Mama Lady." Jim was a faithful member of the Sterling City Church of Christ. Love for his community kept him involved and you could always count on Jim when a challenge was to be met. He served as president of the Sterling County Centennial Association and as chairman of the Old Settlers Reunion. As a member of the Sterling County Historical Association, he worked diligently as a committee member in compiling, "Milling around Sterling County," the historical book of the area. Jim received Sterling County Outstanding Citizen in 1991, was a member and past president of the Lion's Club and served as Sterling County Wagon Boss for the West Texas Boys' Ranch. Jim was a past board member and president of Concho Valley Electric Co-op, member of both Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers' Association and of Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers' Association, and a past board member and president of the North Concho River Soil and Water Conservation District, from which he received the Outstanding Conservation Rancher award in 1987. An avid outdoorsman and historian, Jim had lived his life digging. He became a member of the Concho Valley Archeological Society. His father had started hunting arrowheads in the 1920s and his collection of Indian artifacts became well-known, considered to be "one of the finest private collections in the whole state." Jim continued to expand his findings of artifacts with his undying passion. These endeavors were truly his zeal in life and he was so dedicated to preserving these treasures of history. Two additional treasures in his life were Rob and Treg Manning. "Uncle Jim" counted these nephews as his sons. He was their mentor and a great source of joyfulness for them, and they for him. This bond will be ageless. The family has been immensely blessed by Jacob Tindell, great-nephew, in the past months. Thank you for your unending assistance, day and night, for Uncle Jim and Aunt Kay. You were always there for us. For Jim's exceptional care, we sincerely thank our physicians and friends, Dr. Charles Marsh, Dr. Luis Duarte, Dr. Raj Cheruku, Dr. Chris Barnett and Dr. Philip Bechtel. Our love and gratitude go out to Joy Manning, Jim's sister- in-law, for her devotion and diligence in assisting us in every way, and also to niece Corky Elkins for her compassionate care for Uncle Jim. Thank you to the Rios family for their reliable support. Deepest appreciation also goes to our Hospice family of caregivers. And for the unending care and concerns of all our wonderful friends, we cannot thank you enough. You are steadfast in the eye of the storm. MY HANDS They are not much to look at These old hands of mine Age spots and wrinkles Show the passage of time But if these hands of mine Could speak And tell you what they have touched What a story they could tell Of hope and love and trust They've held a newborn baby Felt his tiny fingers curl Round mine They have brushed away a Teardrop And made a little face to shine Felt the warm soft fur of a kitten The wet cold feel of a Puppy's nose The damp rich earth dug For a garden The dewy velvet petal of a rose The smooth cool comfort of clean sheets On a freshly-made bed The warm fragrant crust Of fresh homemade bread The open pages of my Bible When I've prayed to do my best They have even touched the cold still face Of a mother laid to rest They have touched the Wonderful being Of the man whose love I take Who is lover, friend, companion, My Husband and my mate Yes, if these hands of mine Could speak They would tell a wonderful story, But if they've done any Good on earth. She was born prematurely and reportedly weighed only one and one-half pounds. The neighborhood women helped her mother take care of her. By all accounts, this was about the last time she accepted much help, as she was fiercely independent and proud. She survived and grew into a wonderful young woman. When she was 18, she moved to Fort Worth, where she learned to work on airplanes. Then she moved to Dallas to continue this work. However, the small-town girl in her emerged and she returned to the Junction area. She married Robert Glenn Murr, with whom she raised three children who were the joy of her life. She was known to her family as Mother, Momma and Grannie. She was a very special person who taught her loved ones by her shining example. She taught the meaning of selfless love and the true meaning of the word "family." She taught about devotion to loved ones, facing adversity with grace, and the meaning of generosity, independence and pride. She taught priorities. She allowed her great-granddaughter (far too young for cosmetology school) to cut her hair. To Grannie, spending that special time with her loved one was far more important than having the best hair in town. There are endless examples of her selfless love. Mother, Momma, Grannie, you will be missed. Condolences to the family may be sent online to www.gentryfifefuneralhome.com. Gentry-Fife Funeral Home VESTA I. WEST BRADY - Vesta I. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, at The First United Methodist Church in Coleman. Bro. Charles Hardy of Granbury and Dr. G. Dean Coultas of Coleman will be officiating. Burial will immediately follow in the Coleman Cemetery. Don was born Oct. 2, 1929, in Brownwood, Texas, to George D. and Gladys Anderson Rhone. He attended Texas Tech University after graduation from high school. Don and his brother, John "DeDe," returned home after serving two years in the Army and became partners with their father in the business. In 1964, their father passed away suddenly, leaving the boys to "take care of business" and "keep their house in order." Don managed the hardware store and DeDe managed the grain company, growing the partnership to include ranch and farmland, oil and gas, cattle and commercial property. In 1983, the brothers elected to split their partnership and develop their own interests. Don continued with the hardware store, development of the ranch and renovation of several downtown buildings. With an eye toward retirement, Don sold the hardware store in 1996 and purchased Liveoak Real Estate in 1997. After selling real estate and continuing to manage the ranch, he and Patsy decided it was time to really retire. They sold Liveoak Real Estate and the ranch in 2000 and moved to Granbury to be closer to their children. They joined First Baptist Church in Granbury where they found a wonderful church family. Don and Patsy McNutt met in the summer of 1953 and were married Jan. 23, 1954, in Comanche, Texas. They were blessed with five children and five grandchildren and had recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. Don was an integral part of the community and strived to contribute as much as he could toward the prosperity and success of his hometown. He served on the Agriculture Advisory Board, Coleman Development Committee, president of the Coleman Hospital Interim Board, president and vice president of the Rotary Club, vice chairman of the Economic Development Task Force, president of the Texas Maine Anjou Association, named 1994 Coleman's Man of the Year and was a Little League manager. Johnson's Funeral Home GERALDINE RAMONA McGRAVY SAN ANGELO - Our precious Mimi, Mother and Best Friend walked safely into the open arms of our Heavenly Father after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Geraldine Romona McCravy was born on Jan. 3, 1929, in Ballinger, Texas, to Myrtice and Gerald Arnold. She spent her young life growing up on ranches in Fort McKavett, Menard County and surrounding areas. She married Lt. Col. James B. McCravy in San Angelo in 1956. Together they traveled all over the world, calling many different places home. Jim and Gerri's happiness together was cut short when he was tragically killed in a plane explosion while stationed at Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M., in June of 1972. Despite her own grief and loss, she once again put others before her. She had a young daughter to raise, so with unending determination she graduated with a bachelor's of science in education from Angelo State University when she was 50 years old. She touched many young lives through education, teaching the longest in the kindergarten department of Christoval Elementary. She was still receiving love and thank you's from students she taught over 25 years ago. Our mother was a very gifted artist. She painted many years with her friends that she loved very much. She was very talented and brought much happiness to those she loved, through the gift of beautiful artwork. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Always the lady, she was comfortable doing whatever was asked of her, no matter what the task. From volunteering for the Red Cross and hospitals to serving in the soup kitchen, she always did her best with a gracious and loving heart. She loved her friends and family very much and would go out of her way to see that they were taken care of. Even during her last days, her concerns were for others, always praying that God watch over all those she loved. She always had a kind word, sweet smile and warm hug. Most importantly, Gerri was a very strong Christian. She taught for years with CBS, the Ladies Community Bible Study, and was well loved as a core leader. She believed strongly in God, and through all her suffering she thanked Him constantly for all the many blessings He had given her. She was a truly special, one-of-a-kind lady, and she will be missed every minute of every day, even though we know that she has received the ultimate healing. Gerri is survived by her children, Eddie McCravy, Mike McCravy and wife Debbie of San Angelo, Mary McCann and husband Allan of Christoval; the lights of her life, her grandchildren, Michelle Polkinghorn and husband David of Austin, Chris McCann of San Angelo, Jason McCann, currently of Kuwait, Brady Porter of California and Emress Porter of El Paso; her sister, Carole Speck and husband Lee of Brownwood; her brother, Samuel O. Johnson's Funeral Home August 29 FRED LEON MAHLER FRED LEON MAHLER SAN ANGELO - Dr. Fred Mahler passed away on Thursday evening, August 26, 2004, in a local hospital. He was born Fred Leon Mahler on Oct. 6, 1919, in Randon, Texas. His parents were Rose and Henry Mahler. Fred attended elementary school in north Houston, and he later attended secondary school in Columbus, Texas, where he graduated from high school in 1937. Texas Lutheran College, then a two-year college, offered Fred an athletic scholarship. In 1939, Southwest Texas State offered Fred another scholarship and he graduated from that college in 1941 with honors in both scholastics and athletics. Upon his graduation from Southwest Texas State, he took a civil service job as an aircraft mechanic and soon received a promotion to aircraft inspector. He was sent to Lowry Air Force Base in Denver where he inspected many of the planes that had been brought back to the United States to be repaired after the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor. Toward the end of World War II, Fred enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he hoped to become a pilot. His hopes were dashed when he became ill with rheumatic fever and had to take a medical discharge. Then began a 44-year career in education, beginning with a head coaching assignment in San Marcos, Texas. Then he was offered an assignment of head coach and principal at Eden, Texas. There his teams met with considerable success. From Eden, he and Ruth moved to Port Arthur, Texas, where they lived for 16 years. Fred was first an assistant coach at Thomas Jefferson High School, then a counselor, then an assistant principal, and finally a principal of a complex K-12 for a period of nine years. During these years in Port Arthur, Fred took advantage of the incentives offered by that school district to all who wished to further their education, by accepting an additional month's salary in the summer to attend a university. During this period, he earned a master's degree at Southwest Texas State and a doctorate of education from the University of Houston. Upon the completion of the doctorate of education, Fred was offered an associate professor's post at Sam Houston State University. In a seemingly short period of time, he was promoted to a full professorship, and the last year at Sam Houston, he achieved the rank of Distinguished Professor, a post created by the president of the university. After nine years at Sam Houston State, Dr. Mahler was asked to head the Education Department at Angelo State. After three years, ASU achieved university status and Fred was appointed Dean of Professional Studies, a post he found challenging and most enjoyable. He held the post until his retirement in 1987. The ASU Alumni Association honored Dr. Mahler in 1997 as an Outstanding Retired Faculty Member and described his career in this manner: "Dr. Mahler served Angelo State University for 17 years as the Head of the Education Department and Dean of the College of Professional Studies. During his impressive career in education for more than four decades, he has touched many lives as a coach, principal, professor and administrator. Dr. Mahler served as President of the West Texas Council for Higher Education, authored many educational publications, provided counsel to state and area educational agencies, and received numerous academic honors including Phi Delta Kappa, Who's Who in American Education, and Alpha Chi. Since retirement in 1987, Dr. Mahler has been a dynamic leader and advocate for the Retired Teachers Association, serving as a local and district President." Dr. Mahler became a member of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, in 1944 and remained true to the teachings of this church body to his death. His interest went beyond local matters, since he always kept up with what was happening at the synod level. However, there was never a task too small for him to undertake at the local level. He served on committees with as much zeal as he gave to serving on the Board of Elders or as chairman of a congregation. Dr. Mahler is survived by his wife, Ruth, to whom he had been married 62 years; a son, Fred L. Mahler, Jr. and his wife, Sandra, of Katy; a son, Keith R. Mahler and his wife, Lisa, of San Angelo; and a daughter, Gail Smith and her husband, Harl, of San Angelo. He is also survived by two grandsons; Andrew Mahler and Matthew Mahler, sons of Keith and Lisa Mahler. In addition, he is survived by a sister, Wilma Wimberly of Alice, Texas; a nephew, Ronald Wimberly, also of Alice; and a number of cousins in the Rosenberg-Richmond area. Rains-Seale Funeral Home RENA THORP SAN ANGELO - Longtime resident and friend of Mertzon, Rena Lee Curtis Thorp, 98, has her precious smile once again as she was embraced by the loving arms of our dear Lord on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, after a brief stay in a local nursing home. She was born May 11, 1906, to Virgie and Henry Curtis in Rattler, Mills County, Texas, on the Colorado River. Rena moved to Irion County in 1924 and she and her husband, Oral, built the Hillside Cafe in Mertzon. Rena's love for cooking and feeding people surfaced during this time and many, many hungry souls were fed, not only food, but fed the spirit of God as well. In 1947, Rena moved to Spring Creek and later, in 1979, built a large home there. She raised cattle and sheep on her land. She attributed her "peace with the world" to her "walks on the creek." She treasured every step she took up and down Spring Creek and gained great joy and peace from her long walks along the banks of the creek. Rena actively volunteered for over 54 years in nursing homes, being a charter member of the Home Extension Club and forever a dedicated messenger for the Mertzon Church of Christ. Her love for God reflected unendingly in her love for people and her Church of Christ. She was also acclaimed for being Mertzon's official "Welcoming Lady," always eager to turn strangers into friends. In Rena's 98 years of life, she witnessed six wars and with each conflict, her love for God and her country strengthened. When asked to "share her secret" for a long and happy life, her answer was simple: walk with God, eat healthy, take care of your body with exercise, work hard and always, always be good to people. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Bonnie Holden, Dulah Fields, Vida Lee Kiser and Arma Curtis; husband, Oral Thorp; son and his wife, A.L. "Firecracker" and Betty Shelby; loved one, Jim Laxton; and granddaughter, Carolyn Sue Shelby. Rena is survived by her brother and his wife, Henry and Norma Curtis; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. On behalf of Rena, we want to especially thank the staff at Meadow Creek Nursing Home in San Angelo for filling Rena's last few days on earth with much love, dignity and compassion. Rena was a very independent lady and took pride in her independence. The staff at Meadow Creek helped in her journey to meet God gracefully. Service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004, at Mertzon Church of Christ, Mertzon, Texas, with burial to follow in Mertzon Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tim McBroom, Ken Greer, Shane Lewis, Mort Mertz, Wells Teague and Phillip Walker. Rena requested any memorials be made to the West Texas Boy's Ranch or the Mertzon Church of Christ. Mrs. Thorp's obituary may be viewed online at www.RobertMassie.com.
