Robert Massie Funeral Home LEROY T. BARINA SAN ANGELO - Retired U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Leroy T. Barina, of San Angelo, died Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at the age of 84. The Lord was pleased to welcome home his good and faithful servant and commended him for a job well done on Earth. Service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Billy Henderson, longtime family friend, officiating, assisted by Pastor Charles Renfroe. A military graveside service will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens in San Angelo. Leroy was born April 4, 1920, in Moulton, Texas, to Joe John Barina and Rosa Haechten Barina. His parents worked as farm laborers in the small Czech community and he spent his early years in the Moulton and Shiner area, but mostly attended San Angelo schools. He gleaned most of his education from his 22 years of service to his country in the military. A few days after joining the Army Air Corps in 1941, World War II was declared against Japan, and he received orders to go to Australia. He was first sent to Melbourne and Bellarat, Australia, then later transferred to Port Moresby, New Guinea. There he was assigned to the 90th Bombardment Group, well known as "The Jolly Rogers." Leroy loved this group and right up until the time of his death was a familiar figure about town wearing his Jolly Roger jacket and cap decorated with B-24 planes emblazoned with skull and crossbones, the group's emblem. It was a great conversation piece for him and acquired him many new friends. He returned to the states in 1944. Although the sudden onset of the war had given him no time for formal training, he later went to Aircraft and Engine School at Chanute Field, Ill. In 1952, he deployed to Korea and Airstrip- Taegu. After the Korean War ended, he spent his remaining service years at Bergstrom Air Force Base in Austin, Texas, and Wurtsmith Air Force Base in Oscoda, Mich. He retired from the Air Force in 1963 and returned to San Angelo, where he worked for the Texas State Highway Department and Mitsubishi Aircraft. He married the love of his life, Naomi Doris Lightsey, a young schoolteacher from Eola, on Sept. 19, 1952, in Sweetwater, Texas. This happy union and partnership enjoyed 52 years together. Known for his good looks and smooth talking, Leroy earned the nickname of "Slick" in his younger days. He had the sweetest grin and a wink that endeared him to everyone instantly. He was the kindest, gentlest husband, father, grandfather and brother. Known to never say an unkind word about anyone, everyone enjoyed his company. Leroy tried to live each day in a manner becoming of the Christian man that he was. He was very devoted to his God, church and faith as a member of the Restored Church of Jesus Christ. He showed his profound love for his family daily and took pride in his children's accomplishments. He was well known for his generosity, friendliness and lively sense of humor. A true patriot, he loved his country and flag. He also loved fishing, cooking, playing cards and dominoes, pulling pranks or jokes on his loved ones, working on his cars (and driving them too fast), tending his trees and flowers and caring for his pets. A special milestone in Leroy's life was the purchase of his and Naomi's new country home in 2000, a move that shocked and worried their children since they had lived at their previous home for almost 40 years. He and Naomi saw it as a great adventure. Living there enabled them to enjoy the country life they both enjoyed, and the acreage allowed Leroy to roam freely with his beloved dogs, Prissy and Blue. Leroy had survived living with diabetes and open-heart surgery, and waged a valiant battle with Alzheimer's. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Milton, Oscar and Joe Barina; sister, Leona Barina Farmer; and granddaughter, Julie Jackson Richardson. Survivors are his loving wife, Naomi Barina; one daughter, Jeanne Jackson of San Angelo; and three sons and their wives, Carlton and Lilika Barina of Lubbock, Texas, Sherrill and Twanna Barina of Rockwall, Texas, and Emmitt and Glenda Barina of Flower Mound, Texas. Also surviving is brother Harry Barina of Cleburne, Texas; and sister, Irene Barina Crowley of San Angelo. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Bonnie Jackson Alford, Jerry D. Jackson Jr., Charlene, Alexis, Ashley, Leandra, Ryan, Leela and Allegra Barina, and Philip McGruder; and three great-grandchildren, Kelan Jackson, Ashley Alford and Brady Richardson. Also surviving him are many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends. Pallbearers will be Mike Gruetzmacher, Robert Lightsey, Dwaine Farmer, Jack Hasenbank, James Overfelt and Howard Barina. Honorary pallbearers are Earl Lightsey, Owen J. Gray III, Albert Haechten and Anthony Zienda. This special man is irreplaceable in our hearts and lives, and we will miss him sorely as he "Flies Off into the Wild Blue Yonder!" Rest in Peace, Daddy. In the course of his life, he earned a bachelor's degree, a master's degree and was well on his way to earning his doctorate of Theology. He had many occupations as an aircraft engineer and mechanic, a lineman for Texas Electric and a member of the Civil Air Patrol, however, his true calling and passion in life was preaching and teaching the word of God. As a preacher in the Church of Christ, he traveled to and lived in many cities across the nation and around the world, which allowed him to touch the lives of countless people. In later years they settled in Robert Lee, Texas, were the family still lives today. His passion for the Lord was matched only by his passion for his family. He considered his three children, Lynn, Dan and Sharon, one of his greatest accomplishments. He was extremely proud of his four grandchildren Krista, Tucker, Kyle and Craig; and his great-grandson Danny. He passed from this world after a long battle with Wegener's disease, surrounded by his beloved family. Among the many joys of his life, Ken loved competition shooting. A 54- year resident of Brady, she lived in Weatherford, Texas, for the past four years. In thanksgiving and praise of her life, a memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at First United Methodist Church in Brady. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Frank H. Corder Sr.; her precious granddaughter, Allison Corder Hodges; her parents, Howard and Edith Hanover; her sister, Eleanor Nance; and her brother, Edward Hanover. Born in McGregor, Texas, this quiet, gentle East Texas girl met Frank Corder, the energetic, dynamic West Texas boy from Rocksprings who became the love of her life. They were introduced in College Station by her "twin" cousin, Joe G. Hanover of Bryan. She became an ardent Aggie fan and loved participating in the Texas A&M Senior Ring Dance and being Frank's Queen of the A&M Rodeo when he was King during his senior year. They married in 1940 before Frank joined the Ranger Battalion led by his friend, Earl Rudder. He survived the D-Day landing on Omaha Beach in France while Elizabeth cared for their first child at home. Elizabeth and Frank moved to Brady in 1945 and established a loving home for their three children. Elizabeth was active in the Methodist Church in women's activities, the choir and teaching in Vacation Bible School. She served as room mother and active PTA member during the 25-year span of her children's education in the Brady schools. She and Frank were the first to volunteer for chaperone duties for their children as teenagers - a fact remembered with laughter and joy by all who participated. "Mama Liz" cherished her carpool and after-school times with her grandsons, Reed and Frank Corder. She was ready to have them sleep-over at any time. She tolerated her grand-dogs with grace. In the later years of her life, Elizabeth enjoyed times with the "Golden Girls," New Mexico in autumn, the sewing group, bridge and Scrabble games, and the porch at Lake Palo Pinto. Elizabeth was a loving wife, mother and friend. Her quiet support was cherished by her family who survive her: daughters, Elene Ondo and husband, Paul, of Lake Palo Pinto, Texas, and Mary Glenn LyBrand and husband, Lee, of Albuquerque, N.M.; and son, Frank H. "Buddy" Corder Jr. of Brady. Also surviving is grandson, Reed and wife, Jeana, of Melvin, who are expecting Mama Liz's first great-granddaughter in January. Frank Corder, her other grandson, is a senior at Texas A&M and proudly wears his grandfather's Aggie ring. Other survivors include several nieces and nephews and many friends. Loved by everyone who knew her, she will be greatly missed and never forgotten. To paraphrase Max Lucado, her appointed arrival time came and she descended the ramp and entered the City. She saw faces waiting for her, heard her name spoken by those who love her, and in the back, the One who would rather die than live without her removed His pierced hands from His heavenly robe and…applauded.
