Johnson's Funeral Home April 12 MARIE SCHWERTNER SAN ANGELO - On April 10, 2005, at the age of 89, God called Marie "Mary" Schwertner safely home. Marie spent her last days in the care of Trisun Meadow Creek Nursing Center and VistaCare Hospice. She was loved dearly by her caregivers and would spend hours telling her life stories on the farm and her early life in the Norton and Wall communities. Marie was born Oct. 13, 1915, in Jarrell, Texas, to Walter and Mary Woehl Schwertner. Marie was never blessed with any children, but she loved and cared for many nieces and nephews, and in later years, her great-nieces and nephews. She also took care of elderly people whenever she was asked to do so. In what should have been her retirement years, she continued to care for children and the elderly, including her twin brother, Armin Schwertner. Marie never gained an education and couldn't read or write. She had an art for making quilts and as a little girl was taught by her mother. Before her health failed, she produced many quilts that she gave as gifts or sold to friends. She loved to cook and bake and though unable to read a recipe, she still was famous for her many cookies and kolaches. Marie prayed the rosary every day as a sign of her faithfulness to the Catholic religion and as a final wish, it was her request to have a rosary recited for her by her family and friends. Rosary for Marie will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel, with the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 13, at Holy Angels Catholic Church in San Angelo, Texas. Celebrant for the Mass will be the Rev. Charles Greenwell. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens in the Garden of the Holy Family. Marie is survived by two brothers, Alfred Schwertner and wife Dorothy of Melvin, Texas, and Andrew Schwertner and wife Rosa of Lowake, Texas; and two sisters, Rosalie Sturm and Elsie Wilde and husband Robert, all of Wall, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Ben Schwertner; her twin brother, Armin Schwertner; and a sister, Lucy Cmerek. Pallbearers will be nephews. The family wishes to thank all her caregivers, doctors and nurses at Trisun Meadow Creek Nursing Center and VistaCare Hospice for their continuous care and concern during her final days. Memorials may be made to your favorite charity. Safely Home I am home in Heaven, dear ones; Oh, so happy and so bright! There is perfect joy and beauty In this everlasting light. All the pain and grief is over, Every restless tossing passed; I am now at peace forever, Safely home in Heaven at last. Did you wonder I so calmly Trod the valley of the shade? Oh! but Jesus' love illumined Every dark and fearful glade. And He came Himself to meet me In that way so hard to tread; And with Jesus' arm to lean on, Could I have one doubt or dread? Then you must not grieve so sorely, For I love you dearly still: Try to look beyond earth's shadows, Pray to trust our Father's will. There is work still waiting for you, So you must not idly stand; Do it now, while life remaineth - You shall rest in Jesus' land. When that work is all completed, He will gently call you Home; Oh, the rapture of that meeting, Oh, the joy to see you come! - Priests of the Sacred Heart Monastery Johnson's Funeral Home ELISEO B PEREZ SAN ANGELO - Eliseo B. In April 1980, Susan, Don and Alison moved to San Angelo, where she became very active in the San Angelo Junior League and in her church, Southland Baptist. While in San Angelo, Susan began taking classes at Angelo State University. Her "study partner" was her cat George. In 1989, the family moved to Midland, where she worked for Parker and Parsley for approximately eight years. Through her life she has touched many people by her thoughtfulness and caring nature. She was always sending notes to her friends and others to cheer them up. Susan always made sure her daughter, Alison Henley's extended family were included in her daughter's life. Numerous lifelong friendships were made throughout her life and she made a point to keep in touch with them - friends such as Helen Hall, Becky Stewart and Pat McMurray. She also has two very special friends, her "lunch buddies" Tana Priest and Gayle Carr. She was preceded in death by her father, J. C. Bradshaw in July 2000. Patricia passed from this life at 9 a.m. Friday, April 15, 2005, and is survived by her fiancé Giles "Butch" Scott; four sisters, Lawania Ellis and husband Robert of Odenton, Md., Maranda Drakeford and husband Craig of Aberdeen, N.C., Maria Henes of Fayetteville, N.C. and Shannon Taylor of Southern Pines, N.C.; one brother, Ira McMillian of Seattle, Wash.; stepfather James McMillian of Brooklyn, N.Y.; godmother, Irene Chalmers of Vass, N.C.; six nephews; five nieces; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives and friends. For her residents at Park Plaza Nursing Center, Pat filled a tremendous need. The staff became her extended family. She was kind, caring, considerate, and she carried out her job, although an extremely difficult one, cheerfully and without complaint. Pat was well known for her singing as she performed her daily tasks and her voice brought joy to many around her. One of her favorite singers was Diana Ross and she strived to sing as well as Ms. Ross. Ms. Ross' singing could not hold a candle, however, to the healing that Pat's voice brought as it was heard throughout the halls of the nursing home. Pat was an enormous fan of the Dallas Cowboys and perhaps is the reason Texas was blessed with her presence as citizen of the state. Pat was always willing to be helpful to her co-workers when they were in need. She was willing to lend an ear if they just needed to talk. She was a loyal and very active member of Antioch First Missionary Church in San Angelo and made it known to all around her that God was the leader of her life. Now we can all rejoice that God has called Pat home to be with him and she will enjoy all the riches she has built in heaven by the selfless giving of herself here on earth. Patricia will be missed dearly by all the staff at Park Plaza Nursing Center but we all take a small part of her with us each day because of the lasting impression her kindness has placed on each of us. Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, at Purcell Funeral Home in Southern Pines, N.C. Donations can be made at Park Plaza Nursing Center for the Patricia Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund for Certified Nurse Aid training.
