He was often called by many of them "fact man" or the "walking dictionary." Scientific research projects, astronomy, study of world cultures and theology were just some of his interests. A brilliant and unique young man, Nick was able to call as friends persons ranging from 8 to 80 years of age. His outgoing nature developed early in life and continued to be a strong point of his personality up to his passing. Perhaps the Lord needed a few answers as well and called Nick along to help him. Johnson's Funeral Home Beth Hopkin Combs Bulger SAN ANGELO - Beth Combs Bulger, 82, passed away peacefully in her home in Concord, Calif., on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, with family and friends at her side. She lived the last years of her life watched over her by her daughter, Ciele, and son-in-law, Robert. Beth was born in Michigan in 1992. She grew up on the family strawberry farm, but spent winters in Florida due to her mother's asthma. She loved playing in the fields and selling strawberries at the local market, unlike her four older brothers, who worked hard in the fields. Strawberries were her favorite food for her entire life. She graduated from high school and majored in home economics, with a certificate in "Health and Care of the Sick." Her mother died when she was 16, and with her brothers on their own already, she eagerly left home to join another family, accepting employment caring for their home. Later she worked in the Special Diets section of a hospital kitchen. During World War II, she proudly contributed to the war effort, making drill bits in a factory. At church, Beth met Private Arlys Combs. Accompanied by her father, she soon took a train to California to visit her soldier. Her father found a seat on the crowded train, but she sat on her suitcase for much of the trip. Arlys and Beth married in 1943, and were soon transferred to Arkansas, where Ciele was born. After discharge from the Army, they moved to Arlys' home state, Wisconsin, near where Beth had grown up in Michigan. In 1950, they moved to Fort Worth so Arlys could study at the Bible Baptist Seminary. Their son Garrett was born there. After Arlys was ordained, the family moved to California. Arlys worked part time as a minister, and was an electrician for Southern Pacific Railroad. Beth taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, took care of her home and children, and worked part time to make ends meet. About the time Arlys died, Beth moved to San Angelo, Texas, to help Dawn take care of her four young children. She also provided home health care for elders. She taught Sunday school and sang in the choir at Immanuel Baptist Church, where she met Jeff Bulger. He was a deacon at the church and had been widowed for two years. They lived 12 happy years together, sharing church activities and traveling as far as California and Mexico. They lived their last year at Rio Concho Manor. After Jeff died in 2000, Beth lived at the Rio Concho Terrace for three years, until moving to California. She is survived by two daughters, Dr. Ciele Jupe and her husband, Robert Jupe, of Orinda, Calif., and Dawn Almgren of Brownwood; a son, Garrett Combs of Modesto, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Betty Forrest and her husband, David, of Fort Worth; a stepson, Harold Bulger of Fort Worth; five grandchildren, Kirsten Andreae of Vermont, Aaron, Kevin, David and Esther Almgren of Texas; stepgrandchildren, Kim and Rob Jupe of California; and two great-grandchildren, Jake and Hailey Elder of Vermont.
