Fort Stockton Funeral Home March 8 JERRY COVINGTON ABILENE - Longtime Midland resident Jerry Covington, 83, died Sunday, March 6, 2005, in Midland Memorial Hospital after a long battle with cancer. He was born on July 20, 1921, in Burkburnett, Texas, and raised in San Angelo, where he graduated from San Angelo Central High School in 1938. He attended San Angelo Junior College until 1940, transferring to the University of Texas and graduating in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology. Participating in the V-7 program, he earned a reserve commission in the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Kretchmer in the Atlantic and the USS Petrof Bay in the Pacific. On July 8, 1943, while attending Aircraft Recognition School in Columbus, Ohio, he married Eloise Broussard of Center Point, Texas. After leaving the Navy in 1945, Jerry went to work as a geologist for the Humble Oil Company. He and Eloise moved to Roswell, N.M., where his first assignment was to map the Sacramento Mountains with his field partner, Roy Huffington. After a short stint in Van Horn, Texas, he and Eloise moved to Midland in 1949. Jerry became an independent oilman in 1952, and established a family company, COV Inc., in 1976. He remained as CEO of COV Inc. until 2004. His children Renee, Gary and Lisa carry on his legacy running the company. Inside Jerry there must have been a drummer trying to break free, as his rhythmic gifts manifested themselves in many ways. One son is an internationally-known professional percussionist/keyboardist and another is an accomplished professional guitarist, and together, they have many albums to their credit. Jerry's arresting dance style was born of the Swing Era. His lifelong partner, Eloise, the only one who could follow his lead, played Ginger to his Fred Astaire. Jerry and Eloise also loved to travel, and they often combined their passion for dance and travel by going on dance cruises. Jerry may not have known the boat's itinerary, but was always certain about the quality of the dance floor and the names of the featured bands. Midlanders and international travelers alike still remember and admire the fast footwork and Latin moves that Jerry and Eloise displayed on the dance floor. Jerry was a lifelong member of the Midland YMCA and an avid handball player. In his trademark floppy hat, he was a fixture speed-walking around the outdoor track. Jerry and Eloise were founding members of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in the early '50s, and then were active for years in Trinity Presbyterian Church, where Jerry was a deacon and elder and sang tenor in the choir. Finally, Jerry and Eloise joined First Presbyterian Church of Midland, where both sang in the choir. Jerry was especially proud of performing twice in the Duke Ellington Sacred Concerts, one of which featured sons Kyle and Kirk on guitar and drums. Generous with the gifts God had given him, he was a benefactor not only to his children, his grandchildren, and his churches, but to Schreiner Institute in Kerrville, Texas, where he served on the board and funded a scholarship. Jerry lived his life in service to Christ our Lord, and honored Him with every aspect of his life. He was a man of honesty, integrity and hard work, making him loved and respected by all who were blessed enough to have known him. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Jewell and Mary Covington of San Angelo. He is survived by his loving wife Eloise; two brothers, John Covington of Lubbock, Texas, and Jay Covington of Cedar Hill, Texas; and one sister, June Williams of Hallsville, Texas. He is also survived by his five children, Renee Brunson, Gary Covington, and Lisa Graham and husband Alan of Midland, Kyle Covington and wife Shelia of Nashville, Tenn., and Kirk Covington of Burbank, Calif. He lived to know 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, at Ellis Funeral Home. Funeral service has been scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, at First Presbyterian Church of Midland with the Rev. Steven Schorr officiating. Interment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park. Honorary pallbearers are Gary, Kirk and Kyle Covington, Alan Graham, Aaron Close, Scott Noyes, Victor Brown, Laddie Long and Jim Rhotenberry. In lieu of flowers, please send gifts or donations to Hospice of Midland, P.O. Box 2621, Midland, TX 79702, or to the charity of one's choice. Another of the greatest generation has gone to his reward. We will surely miss him. Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home IMA JACKSON CULP SAN ANGELO - Ima Jackson Culp passed away peacefully at home March 12, 2005. She was born in Melvin, Texas, on Nov. 28, 1924. Ima was the seventh child of eight born to Zema and Dennis Fields. Her early life was spent in the farming communities around Salt Gap, Doole, Eden, Brady and Melvin. She married young, as was the fashion in the days before World War II. To her marriage to D.E. Jackson, two sons were born. She spent the years of her first marriage supporting her husband in his military career and building business, and after their return to San Angelo in 1955, apartment businesses, The Jackson House Motel, Inn of the West Motel, as well as raising their sons. In 1978, she became sole owner of the Inn of the West and found that she was a very good businesswoman. She operated Inn of the West until health issues dictated that she should retire. Ima married Joe Culp in 1979. She took great delight in the social and private life they had together. She was a dedicated member of the Church of Christ and worshipped with the Johnson Street Congregation. Helen Hensley and Allen Price, and others of the congregation visited her, prayed for her, and supported her in her declining health when she became confined to her home. Ima was given the most tender and loving care in her decline by Diana Wood and Sharon Martinez. When it became necessary for around the clock care, Sharon joined in that care and the two of them kept Ima at home and comfortable until the end of her days. It is impossible to express adequate appreciation for what they did. VistaCare Hospice provided a much appreciated service at the end of Ima's life. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 17, in Johnson's Funeral chapel with Dr. Tommy King officiating. "The Winds of Time" Time is like the wind It comes and goes Sometimes fast, sometimes slow But it seems to always be there We seem to lose track of all those years We wish we had some kind of control Over the things that we call "time" We seem to always be in a hurry Not taking enough "time," To say or do the things we wish we had It's like after the high winds blow We wonder where it would go. Just as the "time" in our lives Before we know it It has come and went. Time passes quickly Before we realize just how quick The time I've had with Alex "my Dad" Has been a breath of fresh air And one of the most Precious gifts from God. He has taught me To endure high winds And value the time of life. Time sweeps past us As the soft wind sweeps around us As each passing day We need both the "time." God has given And the soft winds He has blessed us with. The time here for Alex Has ended And the Lord Has swept him up In his loving arms God has left his spirit with us To sweep softly through our lives So each time the soft winds blow I'll take it as the Lord above, Is letting Alex say "Hello" I'll love you always and miss you dearly Daddy! Love always, your Daughter "Always remember; Kindness costs you nothing". - Alex Alexander Johnson's Funeral Home MAE FRANCES WILSON KERMIT - Mae Frances Wilson, age 88, passed away Tuesday, March 15, 2005, in Kermit. "B" HALFMANN SAN ANGELO - "B" came into this world on Jan. 26, 1919, and was christened "Annie B" but has always been known as "B." She was the third of five daughters born to loving ranch parents, Tom and Olivia Scarborough. In her later years, when asked where she grew up, she would proudly say: "I was born south of Carlsbad at the foot of Rattlesnake Mountain, and I have lived all my life in Tom Green County!" She attended school at Grape Creek and Lake View, but due to her father's health, the family moved to Stephenville in 1934, where she graduated from high school. She attended John Tarleton Agricultural College and in 1939 graduated from Daniel Baker College in Brownwood with a degree in education and business. She taught school until 1943, when she went to California to help fight the war. She returned to San Angelo and ended her teaching career at Miles. She then applied her business education by becoming a public accountant and fulfilling one of her longtime dreams of earning her pilot licenses. B always loved people and really enjoyed her friends. She loved to party "hearty" and always had interests in dancing, tennis, swimming, fishing, bowling, low-stakes poker, having fun and could always be counted on to tell a joke or a good story. Those who knew her throughout the years knew her for her generosity (which was often beyond a fault), her sense of humor and her hearty laugh, which always could be heard above all others. She always was a hard worker, whether it was mental or physical. Growing up, she was the one to help her Dad, regardless of what needed to be done. In 1954, she met and married Ervin Halfmann, a farmer from Paint Rock. At that point, her life became "eight hours at the office" and then back to the farm to go to work. Throughout their 27-year marriage, "Erv and B's" home was widely known as the place to go. Rarely was there a weekend when Erv wasn't cooking barbecue while B did the beans and salad for 15 to 25 people. In 1956, they decided to go into the nightclub business, where B quickly became known as the "best floor bouncer" in town. The year 1960 saw them back on the farm, and through it all, life never failed to include those eight hours at the office. Throughout their years on the farm, B would laughingly say that she was a very talented cotton "hoer" and a champion cotton trailer stomper. Fresh out of college, she was interested in the real-estate business, but in 1939, her father and mother would have no part of a young woman driving around with men looking at property. So this desire was delayed until 1973, when she went back to school to become a Realtor. This led to buying and remodeling houses, and those eight hours at the office always were there before going home to join all the fun of remodeling. All this led to the ownership of many rental houses, two motels, a used-car lot and another nightclub. She remained active in the real-estate business until her death. In her later years, as her health failed, her hearty laugh also faded, but she still managed to enjoy old friends and the making of new ones. She always was open to any challenge issued to her in regard to table games, especially bridge, and maintained her telling of jokes and good stories. One of her very closest friends once said, "a little embellishment never did hurt one of B's stories!" B and her sisters were raised to believe in God and were taught that one should always recognize right from wrong, and that it was not sufficient to merely recognize the difference but to responsibly act upon that knowledge. B was a member of the First Christian Church and maintained a 55-year association with the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her beloved Erv, her parents, and two sisters, Olivia Asbill and Fay Filburn. She is survived by two sisters, Katie Cain and husband Doyle of Graham, and Jo Scarborough of San Angelo; three generations of nieces and nephews and very special friends, Annie Pearl Finley of Abilene, Tom Vandeventer of Rankin, Lee Scarborough of Harlingen, Becky Schriever of Eola, and the one special love of her life, Lee Halfmann of San Angelo; plus many other friends too numerous to mention, but they know who they are. The family wishes to express their appreciation and give a hearty "thank you" to Dr. Denver Marsh and the battery of doctors and nurses at Shannon Medical Center, with special acknowledgement of Diana Hernandez and the staff of the dialysis unit, the staffs of Royal Estates and Baptist Medical Center. Should anyone care to memorialize our B, in lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her name to a charity of your choice. She departed the bounds of this earth on Thursday, March 17, 2005. Due to other crises within the family, a celebration of her life will be conducted at Royal Estates at a date yet to be determined. Think of her when you are told a funny story or when you hear a hearty laugh. Bury any sorrow that you might feel in good deeds. PETRA R. GONZALES SAN ANGELO - Petra R.
