Thos. J. Downs, of Dunlap postoffice, Travis county, twelve miles east of this place, was killed by lightning Wednesday last at 6 o'clock. He was conversing with his family a moment before, and stepped to the mantel to light his pipe, when he met his sudden and violent death. Deceased was a well-known farmer of this county, and was highly esteemed by all. He was a native of South Carolina, having been born in Laurens district, July 24, 1820. He immigated to DeSoto, now Tate county, Mississippi, in 1848, where he engaged in farming. In 1859 he received a commission as colonel of the state militia. He served in the late war as an officer in the eighteenth regiment of Mississippi cavalry, commanded by the gallant colonel, afterwards General Chalmers. Meeting with financial reverses during and after the war, he came to Texas in 1876, and settled in this county in 1879. Col. Downs was a consistent member of the Presbyterian church, and recently joined Dr. Smoot's Presbyterian church, this city. He leaves a large family, consisting of wife, four married daughters and four sons. His third daughter is the wife of Judge Wm. Minyard, who for a number of years was county judge of Bell county, and now practices law in Dallas. His sudden demise was a great shock to his family and neighbors, who mourn the loss of a loving husband, an indulgent father, a faithful friend.
