(Austin, Texas) Thursday, 01 November 1888, page 11 Death of Dr. McGown. - The friends and acquaintances of Dr. W. C. McGown were startled at the announcement of his death yesterday. He died at his home in this city Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Up to the time of his illness he was in more than usual good health. A short time ago he had a severe stroke of paralysis, from which he never rallied. Death came to him slowly and painfully, but the end was calm and peaceful. Doctor McGown was born in Coffee county, Tenn., December 12, 1824. His father, Colonel John McGown, came to Texas in 1835, consequently the early life of Doctor McGown was passed amid the years of Texas' trials and struggles for independence and amid the hardships of frontier life. In all that period Doctor McGown was ever ready at the call of duty to battle for his state and home, and to bear uncomplainingly the ills and troubles that came upon the earlier Texans. By dint of hard study and sacrifice he was enabled to graduate at the New Orleans School of Medicine in 1859. He at once began his profession, in which he was most successful, and from which he was forced to retire by reasons of failing health. He moved from Houston in 1876 to this place, which has since been his home. Doctor McGown leaves a wife and four children to mourn his death; also, a sister and brother, besides numerous friends who loved and trusted him. Thus there has gone to his reward a good man, a tender husband, a devoted father, a true Christian and a right worthy Mason. His funeral will take place at his residence on Waller street at 10 o'clock this morning, Rev. W. H. Shaw, of the Cumberland Presbyterian church, officiating, of which church Doctor McGown has been a member since 1848. He will be buried with Masonic honors, being a devoted as well as distinguished member of the craft.
