TRINITY COUNTY OBITUARIES The following obituaries have been transcribed from loose page scrapbooks held by Trinity County Museum. The scrapbooks are in poor condition. We are very grateful for the collection and donation to the museum of these records. MRS. J.I. ATKINSON - Expires- Mrs. Ida Bell Atkinson, dearly beloved citizen of Groveton passed on to her reward Tuesday, October 9, 1945 at about 8:30pm after a lingering illness of about 8 months. Mrs. Atkinson has been in the business life of this town for many years and made many friends, who will miss her sadly. She was always pleasant, had a smile and a kind word for those she met. She was never too tired or busy to help those in need. She was a faithful member of the Baptist Church. She left her husband, J.I. Atkinson, two daughters Mrs. W. E. Bell of Houston and Miss Ruth Atkinson of Groveton, two sons Fred Atkinson of Abbeville La and Marvin of Groveton, on granddaughter, Miss Anna Fae Atkinson of Abbeville, La, on sister, Mrs. Clint Atkinson of Houston. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 3pm at Groveton Baptist Church by Ray Funderburk. Arrangements by Biscamp Funeral Home. MRS. DORA HARRISON -Dies Here - Mrs. Dora Keen Harrison died at 8 pm Friday, October 12 at her home after several months of illness. Funeral services were held at the Groveton Methodist Church Monday, October 15 by the pastor, Rev. Mounzon Lee, assisted by Rev. Wadsworth of Livingston. Interment was in the Cedar Grove Cemetery, Trinity under the direction of Renfro Funeral Home. Pallbearers were: Clayburn Dickey, Ira Collins, Frank Ed White, Sherman Eaves, Dudley Warner and Ernest Terry. Mrs. Harrison was born in Bolds Springs in Polk County, Sept 26, 1878 being 67 years and 16 days old at the time of her death. Survivors are two daughters Alta and Lucille Harrison of Groveton, a son, Ben serving in the u s army en route home from the ETO, a sister, Mrs. Gid Honsinger of Trinity, three brothers, C. H Keen of Corpus Christi, Jim Keen of Lufkin and B. L. Keen of Gulfport, Miss., a number of nieces and nephews. The out of town people who attended Mrs. Dora Harrison' funeral were Miss Edna and Alma Dean Wright, Mr. And Mrs. C E Ross, Mr. and Mrs. H. C Craig of Houston, Z Foreman and Mr. and Mrs. H. Price of Livingston. Mr. John Rogers, Mr. and Mrs. R M Rogers, Mrs. Cecil Rogers, Mrs. Hattie Hood and Mrs. Wainright of New Willard. Mrs. A P Keene and Mucie Bo of Moscow, Mrs. W C Sadler and Mrs. Mary Sadler of Huntsville, Mr. and Mrs. C. H Keene of Corpus Christi and Mrs. and Mrs. Jim Keene and Mrs. Doris Wier of Lufkin. MRS. FRANK PLATT - Dies Here - Mrs. Frank Platt was born on mar. 8, 1878 at Pennington and died Monday, September 3, 1945 at her home in Groveton at 2:40 am after suffering a parilectic stroke some four mo. Before. She was a member of the Methodist Church and was married to Rev. Frank Platt on June 25, 1896. To this union was born 7 children, five of whom survive her. Three daughters, Mrs. Marion Cromwell of Logansport, La., Mrs. Katherine Garvy of Houston, Mrs. Laura Gene Alexander of Washington, D.C. Two sons, Paul and Ernest Platt of Livingston, 8 grandchildren and one great grandchild, three sisters, Mrs. Ernest Brunson of Houston, Mrs. Ella martin of Center, Mrs. Edgar Inman of Beaumont. One brother, Tom Chandler of Houston. Funeral services were held Tuesday, 10:00am at Groveton Methodist Church by Rev. E. L. Ingrum of Huntsville, assisted by Rev. Funderburk and Godbey. Interment in Glenwood Cemetery. EDNA EARL MUCKLEROY - Dies Suddenly at Woodlake Home - Edna Earle, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Vernon (Sam) Muckleroy, died at noon Friday, June 13, at the home of her parents at Woodlake. She was at the dinner table with her mother and father when death came suddenly. Edna Earle was 14 years, 12 days of at the time of her untimely death, being born Feb. 1, 1927, in Crockett, where she spent all of her life until the first part of 19841, when she moved with her parents to Woodlake. She had finished the eight grade this year in the Groveton high School where she was a member of the band. Before coming to Woodlake she was a member of the Crockett band and featured as a clarinet soloist. The week before her death she had visited friends in Crockett. She was beloved by her schoolmates at Crockett and Groveton. A member of the Methodist church, she was faithful to her church vows. Funeral services at the Crockett Methodist church Saturday afternoon at 4:30 were attended by hundreds of relatives and friends including the Groveton high school band members. Rev Harry Rankin officiated. Song services were conducted by her girl friends of Crockett accompanied by Joyce Thompson at the organ. The local band and the Crocket band with their directors, Mr. Lively and Mr. Darsey, attended to pay their last respects. Interment was in the Crockett cemetery with the following acting as pallbearers: Roy Lester Morrow and Buddy Anders, Grapeland, Hardy Roberson, Groveton: Brent Bennett, Jacob Carprielian and Preston Blalock, Crockett. Survivors are her parents, Mr. And Mrs. Vernon Muckleroy, Woodlake; her grandparents, Mr. And Mrs. George Muckelroy of Precilla and Mr. And Mrs. T. M. Buller of Crockett; a number of aunt, uncles, cousins and friend who mourn her passing. WOODIE H. POSTON - Citizens of the entire county and adjoining counties were greatly shocked and deeply sorrowed by the sudden passing to that "Great Beyond " of Woodie Henderson Poston who died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1942 at 3:00P.M. near his home north of Groveton. One of the best known, and most beloved characters of Trinity county, Woodie H. Poston was born May 14, 1874, at East Prairie, nine miles north of Groveton, and lived his entire life in this county. He was the second eldest child of the late Dr. Marion C. Poston and Charlotte Davis Poston, pioneers of the county, who preceded him in death several years ago. In young manhood, Woodie was united with the First Christian Church at East Prairie where he was a staunch and active member and leader in the church, as well as other civics of the community. He was married to Miss Caroline Hutto, daughter of Hill Hutto, a county pioneer. To this union were born five children. Two daughters, Mrs. Leroy Faver of Lovelady and Mrs. W.T. Bruton of Wichita Falls, still survive. Years ago, Woodie Poston and his family located in Groveton and spent many years in town, moving about fourteen years ago to his farm home two miles north on the Groveton-Trinity highway. Prior to this time he served several years as city marshall of Groveton, later being elected county commissioner of precinct No. 1, servicing eight years. For the past six years and at the time of his death, he was engaged in the lumber business, operating his won sawmill near his home. Funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon at three o'clock with Rev. W. A. Reagan officiating. Burial was in the Glenwood cemetery here. Besides his wife and two daughters, the deceased is survived by one grandchild, William Paul Faver; one brother, Wiley S. Poston, Groveton, a well know lawyer of the county; five sisters - Mrs. O.E. Avery, Pharr; Mrs. Wesley Lee, Huntsville; Mrs. C. E. Forest, Liberty; Mrs. Gatt Lucas, Trinity, Mrs. Louis Bass, Groveton, six nephews and eleven nieces, and a host of other relatives and friends. As a tribute to the sacred memory of Woodie Henderson Poston, our beloved husband, father, brother and friend, we tenderly dedicate the following lines; "When the mists have rolled in splendor -From the beauty of the hills And the sunset warm and tender, Falls in kisses on the rills-When we read Love's shining letter _ In the rainbow of the spray: We will understand it better, When the mists have rolled away." ALBERT REESE - (Obit published April 6, 1939) - dies at home here - Albert Reese, well known Groveton citizen died suddenly at this home here Tuesday afternoon at about 5:45. His wife, it was understood, found him lying dead on the living room floor when she entered the house from the yard where she had been only a few minutes. Rev. W. A. Reagan, a very close friend, conducted the funeral services at the Groveton Baptist church Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Interment followed in the local cemetery with special graveside rites conducted by the American Legion, of which Mr. Reese was a member. William Albert Reese observed his forty-ninth birthday on Feb. 11of this year. He was much beloved man, a faithful and enthusiastic worker in all departments of his Sunday school and church, and will be missed greatly by the Baptist church here. From 1920-1924 Mr. Reese served as superintendent of Trinity county. He was postmaster at Groveton from 1924 until 1933. He was a world war veteran, and a Master Mason. At the tie of his death Mr. Reese was investigator for the Texas Old Age Assistance in Trinity county, beginning with that work on Feb.14, 1936. The affectionate esteem of the people of this city and town was shown by the very large crowd attending the funeral and by the many beautiful floral offerings. Mr. Reese was a man on whom his pastor relied and a loving father, husband and friend. Survivors include his wife and three children, Peggy, Mary Ann and Albert Neil, and his mother, Mrs. Sallie Reese of Groveton; a brother, Charlie Reese of Beaumont; and a sister, Mrs. Morris A. Jensen of Port Arthur; and a number of other relatives. JUDGE C. H.KENLEY - Dies in Houston- Judge C. H. Kenley, long-time resident of Groveton and Trinity county, died at 7 am Monday, April 13(1942), in the Methodist Hospital in Houston following an illness of several years duration. He had been in the Houston hospital for treatment for more than a month. His daughter, Miss Carol and other relatives had been at his bedside constantly for the past week. Born on Trinity county farm near Pennington Feb 27, 1670(1870), Carrol H. Kenley was the oldest child of a well-known family, and spent his life in this county. He attended the private school, Steel School, and with his family later moved to Nogalus Prairie. At an early age he became active in the public affairs of Trinity county. He served as county clerk for a number of years, and then became Tax Collector. Later he was county judge for several terms and was active in all good roads movements. In 1896 he established and continually until his death the first abstract plant in Trinity county. It has been stated that Judge Kenley had had offices in the Trinity county courthouse for more than fifty years.
