TRINITY COUNTY OBITUARIES The following obituaries have been transcribed from "Trinity County Scrapbooks" Vols.1-8 as collected by Burnadeen Landrum Smith. The Trinity County Historical Museum has on display one set of these wonderful books. The books cover various types of articles from the local papers, not just obituaries, covering the time frame from Jan. 1, 1907 through Nov. 30, 1987. We are very grateful to Ms. Smith for this work and the donation to our museum. Scrapbook One Page One MRS. LINNIE V. WHITE- was born in Minn. On May 22, 1862 and died suddenly at her home at 1001 (unreadable) in Houston Thursday at 11 pm. She lived in Groveton from 1887 until 1939. She was very active in church affairs and was a charter member of the Baptist Church here, also a member of the Eastern Star. She was always of a cheerful disposition and was never too tired to help anyone who was in need. She had many friends in Trinity County and elsewhere. She is survived by one son Monte, who is her only survivor. Funeral services were held at 2:30 Sunday by Rev. Funderburk. Arrangements by Biscamp Funeral Home. MRS. CHARLIE BROCK- 48, died at 9:30 pm on April 27, 1945 about 12 hours after being critically burned when a can of kerosene explored at her home in the Crecy Community. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church. She is survived by her husband, 4 daughters, Mrs. Ben Nerren, Freeport, Mrs. Marie Pyle, Beaumont, Misses Juanita and Charline Brock of Crecy, two sons, J.D. of Apple Springs, Alfred of Crecy. Funeral services were held Sunday at Garn Cemetery at 2:30 by Rev. Wright and others. Funeral arrangements by Biscamp's Funeral Home. CLEMON TURNER DIES (Published Groveton News Dec 7, 1944 - handwritten 1945) -Clemon Turner, age 41, died Saturday, March 2, 194?, at his home at Apple Springs, after an 18-year illness. He was a member of the Church of Christ. He is survived by his parents, Mr. And Mrs. Bob Turner of Apple Springs; one sister, Mrs. Lee hart of Apple Springs, two nephews and one niece. Funeral services were held Sunday by Rev. Ponder. Arrangements by Biscamp Funeral Home. MRS ELLA TURNER - dies (Mar. 9, 1945 handwritten note) - Mrs. Ella Turner was born in Alabama on March 16, 1871. Died about 5 p.m. at the home of Mr. And Mrs. Floyd White in Trinity after a two weeks illness. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Ethel Long of Alvin, 4 sons, Grady Turner of Dickson; Lloyd and Wilsin of Highland; Atmar of Angleton. Six sisters: Mrsr. Walter Buchanan, Mrs. R. F. Adams, Mrs. A. Maples, Mrs. Noah Price, all of Lovelady; Mrs. Ralph Williamson of Weldon; Mrs. Charlie Williams of Huntsville. Four brothers, Noah Harrelson of Huntsville; Columbus Harrelson of Lovelady; Herbbert of Huntsville: Morgan of Houston. Eighteen grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday at 4:30 at Salem cemetery by Rev. Jeffries. Arrangements by Biscamp Funeral Home. MRS BOSTICK -Passes Away (The Groveton News April 12, 1945) - The many friends of Mrs. V* Bostick will be grieved to learn her tragic death Sunday in a Beaumont Hospital. Her clothing caught fire Wensday of last week when she was * some cleaning fluid which became ignited, burning her entire body and face. She was rushed to a Beaumont Hospital after being carried to Woodville Hospital and being informed there that her case was considered hopeless. She has spent much time in Groveton the past 2 years and has many friends here during her stay. Her husband is the brother of Mrs. Jack Lockhert and the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. T.Bostick here all of whom have passed away within the last few years. Mrs. Bostick is survived by her husband Wash of Woodville, 2 daughters and one son and other relatives. Funeral services were held Monday at Woodville. LT. S.E. WOMACK - Killed in Action (The Groveton News April 12, 1945) The War Department notified Mrs. Edwina (Terry) Womack of the death of her husband, 1st Lt. Sollie Womack, who was killed in action somewhere in Germany across the Rhine River. Lt. Wommack has been in service about three years and has been across for seven months. He was 28 years of age. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. S.E. Wommack live at Centralia. His wife lives with her parents, Mr. And Mrs. A.S. Terry. 2nd Obituary - First Lt. Sollie E. Womack of Centralia, Texas was wounded March * and died March 25 of shrapnel wounds received in action against the enemy near Linz, Germany. He died in the Thirteenth Field Hospital and was buried in an American Cemetery near Aubel, Belgium. Lt. Womack was a graduate of Groveton High School in the class of '35 and at the time of his induction into the service was attending Sam Houston State Teachers College. He was inducted into the service February 9, 1942 and received his commission as Second Lt. At Ft. Benning, Georgia, October 6, 1942. Lt. Womack had been overseas for six and one half months at the time of his death. Five and half months of this time was spent in combat. He was with the 99 division, which played a big part in stopping the Germans during the Belgian Bulge. His division was the first to cross East of the Rhine. A quotation from his commanding officer stated "Sollie was indeed a worthy soldier of our country, a credit to himself and his comrades. His performance of duty was in the highest traditions of the American officer. He died offering himself that we might live, 'greater love than this hath no man than he lay down his life for his friends. MRS MARY CLINT -(handwritten note, published April 12, 1945)-A message came to Groveton Announcing the death of Mrs. Mary Clint, wife of the later Walter Clint, at Brownsville, Texas on April 16th. She is survived by two sons and one daughter of Brownsville and five sisters: Mrs. Lula Bradley, Mrs. Annie Shannon, Mrs. Della Meyers, Mrs. Francis Howell of Houston and Mrs. Callie Hall of Groveton. Mrs. Cline was reared n Groveton, *a daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Abe Magee, pioneer residents. (Handwritten note) - James Arthur King b 12 Feb 1861, d 25 July 1947 Norah Walker King b 18 Jan 1874, d 12 Dec 1942, Married 19 Feb 1893. COUNTY JUDGE WILEY POSTON -Passes Away - (published Thursday, April 19, 1945) - Wiley S. Poston was born in Trinity County on September 7, 1878 and died at his home here on April 13, 1945 at about 4:29 p.m. after a weeks illness. His health had been failing for several months. He was elected County Judge here in the last primary by a large majority and was rendering the public splendid service, devoting his time entirely to his office and in helping each and every one in any way he could. He was a man who helped the rich and poor alike, always eager to lend his service wherever needed most. He has hundreds of friends here and elsewhere who deeply mourn his going. Groveton has lost a valuable man and his place will not be easy to fill. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Lufkin but attended the local churches. He taught a Sunday School class in the Methodist church here. He is survived by his wife Mrs. Ola Poston, 2 daughters, Mrs. Howard Trout of Lufkin, Mrs. R. E. Schuller of Houston, One son, Sgt. Wiley Poston of Ellington Field, three grandson, four sisters, Mrs. Wesley Lee of Houston, Mrs. Gat Lucas of Trinity, Mrs. Lewis Bass of Lufkin and Mrs. O.E. Avery of Pharr, Texas. Funeral Services were held Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Groveton Methodist Church by Rev. Wooten and Welsh of Lufkin assisted by Rev. Lee and Funderburk. Arrangements by Biscamp Funeral Home. MACY WHITTON- Dies (published May 3, 1945 - handwritten note died 21 Apr 1945) Macy Whitton age 36 died Saturday night about 9 p.m. a few hours after being struck by a S.P. train near his residence in Houston where he was employed. He was a member of the Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nettie Whitton, three daughters and two sons, one sister and seven brothers, his mother and stepbrother, Mr. and Mrs. Will Owens of Trinity, Rt. 2. Funeral services were held Monday at 4 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Cemetery by Rev. A. M. Funderburk. Arrangements by Biscamp Funeral Home. PAUL THOMPSON - Paul Elton Thompson age 8, son of Mrs. Agnes Thompson died on Sunday, April 22, 1945 at 4 p.m. after an 11-month illness. He was carried to Houston several months ago to undergo treatment but despite the care of the faithful doctors, nurses and relatives he found a losing fight. He is survived by his mother, four sisters, Mrs. Jim Ray Nichols, Mrs. C. A. Nichols, and Miss Mary Louise Thompson of Groveton, and Mrs. W. P. Lewis of Orange. Three brothers, PFC H.A. Thompson of San Angelo, Cpl. Odis Thompson of Alexandrin, La, and Jimmie Thompson of Groveton. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Groveton Church of Christ by Rev. Coffman of Lufkin. Arrangements by Biscamp Funeral Home. MRS BIRDIE NASH - Passes Away - Mrs. Birdie Nash, age 70, was born in Panola Co., Texas and died May 12, 1945 at Josserand, Texas after an illness of two years. She had made her residence in this county about twenty-five years. Mrs. Nash was a member of the Christian Church. Survivors include one son, Otis of Corrigan, one daughter, Mrs. Florence Foster of Josserand, one brother, Jim Payne of Marshall, two sisters, Mrs. Nora Hodge of Carmona, Mrs. Sallie Browning of Groveton, eight grandchildren and on great-great grandchild. Funeral services were held at the Glenwood Cemetery at Groveton May 13, 3:00 p.m. by Rev. T. Miller Smith and Rev. A. M. Funderburk. Pallbearers were Lee Hunt, Chrstie Strovall, Dwight Sisk, Bill Spencer, B.M. McKnight and Jack Foster. Arrangements by Corrigan Funeral Home. PVT HENRY HELTON - age 26, was killed in action April 16, 1945 on Luzon. He was employed at Browns Ship Yard as leaderman before going in Service August 9th in 1944. He leaves a wife and baby who is living with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jape Helton of Port Arthur, and three sisters, Mrs. Morris Bruce of Center Point, Mrs. Durward Hathorn of Houston and Miss Maxine Helton of Port Arthur. MRS. LOIS LEE WHITELY -was born June 21, 1921 and died Sunday May 13, 1945 in Livingston Hospital where she underwent and operation five wks. Ago. She was a member of the Baptist church. She is survived by her husband, Lois Lee Whitley and two sons, Billie Rex and John L. of Corrigan, parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Reeves of New Baden, three sisters, Mrs. Willie Lee Caldwell, Mrs. Kyle Miller of Houston, Mrs. Dorothy Scholt of Franklin, four brothers, Thomas, Wilburn and Kennie Reeves all serving overseas and Milton of New Baden. Funeral services were held Monday at 4 p.m. by Rev. Funderburk at Carmona Cemetery. Arrangements by Biscamp. LEON WRIGHT - Killed in Action - Mr. and Mrs. Albert Wright of Rt. 1, Groveton, Texas received word on May 17, 1945 that their son, Leon Wright F 2/c was killed in action. No other information is available at the present time, but other details will be released as soon as they are available. Leon was born on January 17, 1926 and attended school at Groveton until he went into the U.S. Navy on April 27, 1944. He was shipped overseas about February 15, 1944. Up until this time he had received schooling and training in San Diego, California, Gulf Port, Miss., Philadelphia, Pa and then went to Treasure Island, California, where he was assigned to a destroyer. Leon's well know by friends throughout and around Groveton, and survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Wright, two brothers, Doyle and Elmer and five sisters, Lucille, Lois, Wilma, Madeline Wright and Mrs. H. J. Pannel of Houston, Texas. GEORGE ALFRED BEST - was born Mar. 16, 1881 in Houston Co. and died at his home in Helmic on Sunday May 27, 1945. He is survived by his wife Mrs. Allie Best, two daughters, Mrs. Riley Lee and Mrs. Nolan Lee of Helmic, three sons, Lonnie, Edgar and Clifford, one brother, Sam Best, fifteen grandchildren. The funeral was at Pleasant Hill Cemetery by Rev. Funderburk. Arrangements by Biscamp. JOHN WALKER WARREN - was born in Trinity County on April 12, 1870 and died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Parker on May 21, 1945 at about 3:30 p.m. He was a member of the Baptist church. He is survived by three daughters: Mrs. C. H. Barfield of Houston, Mrs. George Reese and Mrs. William Parker of Groveton. Three sons: Thomas of Austin, Edward of Ganado and William of Crecy. One brother, Silas of Apple Springs. Two sisters, Mrs. Oscar Williams of Apple Springs, Mrs. Annie White of Apple Springs. 19 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Bennett Cemetery by Rev. Jim Key. Arrangements by Biscamp. MRS MARGARET REINHARDT - 47, was born in Trinity County, Texas and died at her home on May 19, 1945. She was a member of the Stryker Baptist church. Survivors are: husband, Will, one son, James Cloyce, one daughter, Billie Jean and her mother Mrs. Emma Wright all of Pluck, sisters, Mrs. Bertha Wright, Mrs. Hester Parker, and Mrs. Lean Antley of Groveton, brothers, Billie and Albert of Groveton, N.R. of Huntsville, Ruebin of Montgomery and Lee in service in England. Funeral services were held at the Bennett Cemetery, Apple Springs May 20 at 4:30 by Rev. Leroy Patt? And Rev. Starkey. Pallbearers were Elmer Knox, Gordon Reily, Walter Spjeettstosser, J.C.
