TRINITY COUNTY OBITUARIES Scrapbook Book One Continued Page Six REBA HARRIS - age 21, was drowned on Tuesday June 3 (1946), about 5:30 P.M. while on an outing trip with her husband and some friends at Galveston. Reba had lived her entire life in Trinity County, except for the past three years. (More biographical background given in obit). She is survived by her husband, Harrell Harris of Houston and her father, Walter Bailey of Houston. Funeral services were held at Sumpter Cemetery at 4:00 P.M. by Rev. Funderburk. ABNER LEE - age 45, died June 15 (1946), He had lived in Trinity County all his life and was a member of the Baptist Church. Funeral services were held Monday at 2:30 P.M at the Mt. Zion Cemetery with Rev. E.B. Yates officiating. Survivors include one brother, Jack Lee of Apple Springs: two sisters, Mrs. Sallie Hill of Corpus Christi and Mrs. Bertha Easley of Corsicana; father, Joe Lee of Corsicana; and one daughter Miss Nina Fay Lee of California. Active pallbearers were Burl White, Earl White, Roland Davis, Harrison Davis, Joe Bailey Davis and John Cook. Oakley-Metcalf was in charge of arrangements. (Earlier article shown for drowning death of Abb Lee in a slough of the Neches River). R.A. ARNOLD - Richard Andrew Arnold was born July 9th 1868 in Houston county. Died Saturday July 20, 1946 at about 3:30 A.M. in Stokes Dean Hospital after about a week illness. He had been in failing health for several years. He has lived in and near Groveton for the past 17 years. Was a member of the Baptist (church) and has been a deacon for 23 years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Tohitha Arnold and one son, Alton Arnold of Westville. Four daughters: Mrs. Willie Barnes of Chester, Mrs. R.O. Chessher, and Mrs. Joe Ross, both of Groveton, Mrs. Doyle Byrd of Houston, and 12 grandchildren. Two sisters Mrs. Mary Goodman and Mrs. Tom Stewart of Diboll. Funeral services were held Sunday at 4 P.M. at Union Springs Cemetery at Corrigan by Rev. Funderburk. Arrangements by Biscamp Funeral Home. R.W. BETTIS - was born July 10, 1884 in Burleson Co. (TX) died Sunday July 21, 1946 at about 7 A.M. after a lingering illness. He came to Magee Bend in 1921 where he has resided until his death. He was a member of the Baptist Church and a deacon. He was married September 22, 1909 to Miss Mary Ashworth who survives him. Also, one son, Herman of Magee Bend. Funeral services were held Monday at 11 A.M. at Bennett Cemetery by Rev. F.D. Pettis. Arrangements by Biscamp Funeral Home. MRS. LOTTIE BRENT - Mrs. Lottie Eudora Brent was born Feb. 3, 1876 in Milam County. Died at 9 A.M. on Thursday July 25 at the home of Mrs. J.M. Otis in Trinity. She was married to J.A. Brent ?46 yrs. Ago. She was a member of the Church of Christ. She is survived by her husband and five daughters, Mrs. Mabel Brent of Houston, Mr. J.M. Otis of Trinity, Mrs. N.H. Driscole of Pelly, Mrs. F. L. Griswold of Weldon, Mrs. M.T. Wars of Goose Creek and three sons, Clyde Lee of Lovelady, Chester of Goose Creek, Elton of Pelley. Also one brother, Jim Hart of Highland, 10 grandchildren. Funeral services was at 2:00 P.M. Friday by Rev. Kaufman. Arrangements by Biscamps Funeral Home. DANIEL ESTEP - Daniel Albert Eastep, was born in Trinity county on Sept. 6, 1860 . Died at his home near Pennington on Sunday July 28, 1946 at 1:40 A.M. after a six-month illness. He married Miss Mattie Dial on Dec. 22, 1889. He was a member of the Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mattie Eastep, four sons: Hiram of Pennington, Burl of Scott, Miss Clyde of Texas City and August of Springfield, MO. 18 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tues at 11:00 A.M. at East Prairie cemetery by Rev. Sullivan, arrangements by Biscamp Funeral Home. BIT GANDY - Funeral services for Mr. E. Bit Gandy age 73 were held at 2 P.M. Monday august 26th at the Bennett Cemetery with Rev. W. S. Moody of Lufkin officiating. Mr. Gandy who had reside in trinity county for the past 60 years, died at the home of his daughter's Mrs. Jessie Warren of Lufkin at 2:30 P.M. Sunday August 25th. (1946) Mr. Gandy is survived by his widow Mrs. Florl Gandy of Houston. Three daughters Mrs. Jessie Warren of Lufkin, Mrs. Doris Madison of Goose Creek and Mrs. Wayne Johnson also of Lufkin. Three brothers: Dr. O.P. Gandy of Lufkin, Babe Gandy of Apple Springs and Lum Gandy of Lufkin. One sister, Mrs. Pearl Womack of Centralia, nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild. Arrangements were in charge of Gipson Funeral Home. LUM MAGEE - Uncle Lum Magee, well known citizen of Trinity county died Sunday September 8, 1946 at 5:00 P.M. from injuries received at 7:00 A.M. Sunday morning from at bull at the Gunther home in Groveton. Mr. Magee was born November 14, 1853, he would have been 93 years old on November 14th of this year, he is known as Trinity County's oldest citizen. He was active up to the day he died as he owned and operated a small blacksmith shop at his home where he worked every day. His wife preceded him in death only then days ago. He is survived by one granddaughter, Mrs. Frank Gunter, one great granddaughter, Mrs. Curly Goodman, both of Groveton and one grandson, Frank Guter of Houston. J.D. COLLINS - John Duty Collins, well known Groveton druggist, died in a Crockett hospital Sunday night, Nov. 17, (1946) at 9:30 P.M. Funeral services were held in the John R. Collins home, his childhood residence in Groveton at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning by Rev. James A. Calloway, assisted by Dr. V.A. Godbey. Interment was in Glenwood Cemetery under the direction of Waller Funeral Home of Crockett. Pallbearers were Bill Martin, Louis Nelms, Jimmie C. Taylor, Roy Howard and Audley Lee Regan of Groveton; Rex Atmar of Lufkin; Max Rogers of Huntsville and H.S. Key of Trinity. Born April 6, 1896 in Groveton, John Duty Collins was the son of the late John R. Collins and wife, both from pioneer families of Trinity County. His father founded the Collins Drug Store in Groveton which maintains the slogan "For the Service of Mankind Since 1888'. Mr. Collins married to Miss Eaton Hicks November 2, 1817 (sic 1917) and spent his life in Groveton. A graduate pharmacist he was connected with the Collins Drug Store for a number of years, and had farming and livestock interests in the county. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Eaton Collins of Groveton; tow sons, Lt. Col. John Duty Collins, Jr. of the U.S. Army Air Corps, San Antonio and Jerry, student at Texas University, Austin; one daughter, Mrs. Frances Manry of Corrigan, three sisters and three brothers. CLEM B. REYNOLDS - age 45, died at his home in Lufkin, Saturday, Dec. 1, 1945 at 9:00 A.M. after a lingering illness. Funeral services are incomplete, awaiting the arrival of his son, Jeff who is in the Navy, stationed at Bremerton, Wash. The funeral will be held in Groveton at the Methodist Church upon the arrival of Jeff, which will probably be Thursday or Friday. He is survived by five sons and one daughter, besides his wife, and step-mother; Mrs. Nancy Reynolds. And two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Loden, Groveton and Mrs. Robbie Eaves of Lufkin. T.D. DICKEY - T.D. (Dell) Dickey was born November 1st 1901, in Leon County, Texas; died December 5th 1946 at 4 P.M. in Southwestern General Hospital in El Paso, Texas. Mr. Dickey moved to Groveton with his family in 1914, attended the Groveton school until he was in the 11th grade when his health failed and he had to go west. He made is residence in Capitan, New Mexico, engage in ranching. He was married to Miss Madeline Covers of Greenville, IL who at that time was chief dietitian at Fort Stanton, New Mexico. Mr. and Mrs. Dickey made their summer home in Capitan, New Mexico and winter home in El Paso until his death. He was a member of the Methodist church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Madeline Dickey of El Paso, two brothers, J.C. and W.L. Dickey of Groveton, and two sisters, Mrs. George Dean of Groveton and Mrs. I.D. Jackson of Huntsville. MRS. JOE COLLINS - was born in Polk County, May 3, 1872 and died at her home in Groveton, Thursday December 3 at 11:30 A.M. She was a devout member of the Baptist Church. She is survived by two daughters Mrs. Joe Sellers of Groveton and Mrs. William Cox of Ventura, Calif. Two sons, Carry of Victoria and Louis and Bob Collins of Garber, Okla. One sister and two brothers. Funeral services was held Thursday by Rev. Funderburk at the First Baptist Church. She was laid to rest in Glenwood cemetery. Funeral arrangements by Biscamps. ERNEST FAILS - died December 1st 1946 at the home of his sister, Mrs. Lewis Tyrus. He was buried at Fairfield Dec. 3rd. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Hattie Fails of Groveton, two children: Gerold and Sue also of Groveton. Five brothers, Fred Fails of Fairfield, Bill, Georgie, Dickson and Lenord of Jacksonville. Three sisters, Mrs. Fannie Tyus of Tunner Town, Mrs. Onie Chancer of Houston and Mrs. Onie Chancer of Fairfield (sic). GEO. TULLOS - George Anson Tullos was born June 2, 1858 in Forest, Miss. Died at his home at Pennington Tuesday January 22, 1947 at about 10 A.M. after a lingering illness. He is survived by his three sons, Clarence, Sid and Mack all of Pennington. Funeral services were held Thursday at 2 P.M. by Rev. Funderburk. Arrangements by Biscamp. HUGH LOWERY, age 52 well known in Trinity County died at his home in Conroe Monday, March 3, 1947. He was owner of a shoe shop in Groveton for several years, later moving to Trinity and on to Conroe where he was actively engaged until he suffered a stroke 16 months ago. He was a member of the Christian Church. Survived by his wife, Mrs. Lowery of Conroe, one daughter, Mrs. Simon Harris of Conroe, one grandson, Simon Harris, Jr. Three brothers. Funeral services were held Tues. at 3: P.M. at Ivy cemetery by Rev. W. S. Moody. Arrangements by Biscamp. (Handwritten B. 1894, burial place Ivie Cemetery, Houston Co., TX). MRS. L. MADDEN - was born Sept. 1, 1897 in Trinity County. Died Sun. Feb. 23, 1947 in John Sealy Hospital after a lingering illness. She was carried to John Sealy Hospital one week ago where the Drs. Pronounced her with pneumonia. She is survived by her husband, L. Madden of Westville, 2 daughters, Misses Ruth and Sibye of Westville. Funeral services were held Tues. at 2: P.M. at Boontown cemetery by Rev. F. D. Pettis of Overton. Arrangements by Oakley Metcalf. WILLIAM HINDS MANGUM , Trinity County pioneer citizen born October 7, 1874, in Trinity county where he lived all his life, died March 31, 1947, at 10:40 A.M. in Crockett hospital where he had been ill for two weeks. He had been in ill health for one year. Mr. Mangum was a member of the Zion Hill Baptist Church. He married Miss Dora McClain 35 years ago. Two sons survive this union: Mildredge of Groveton and Earlene of Odessa. His second marriage was to Miss Clara Rush on Sept. 20, 1914. To this union were born five children. Survivors are his widow and four daughters, Mattie Lou and Peggy Joy of Friday, Mrs. Ellen Hallmark of Pasadena, Mrs. Geno Balducci of Galveston and on son, Glenn of Texas City; two brothers, Sol Mangum of Crecy and W.B. Mangum of Houston; two sisters, Mrs. Mollie Clark and Mrs. Angie Shell of Beaumont; ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at Ellis Prairie Tuesday at 3:30 P.M. with Rev. J. T. Kee officiating.
