MANN CEMETERY Tyler County, Texas Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/tx/txfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Darlene Trussell - wbtrussell@sbcglobal.net October 21, 2006 From: Phyllis Darlene Childress Allman Trussell (daughter of Beatrice Opal Knight Childress, granddaughter of Pearl Mann Knight, g-granddaughter of Robert Elonzo (Bob) Mann, g-g- granddaughter of Archibald Mann, g-g-g-granddaughter of Ralph and Eleanor Baker Mann). This transcription was completed in October 2006, and should be a fairly complete list of everyone buried in the Mann Cemetery as of that date. Almost everyone buried here is related to the Mann family by blood or by marriage. We are told the Mann’s first settled in this country many years ago in Virginia, later moved into South Carolina, then Alabama, then briefly into Mississippi. In the very early 1800’s Levi Mann spent some time in this very rugged land called Texas, returned to Mississippi where he told his family enough about Texas that several were inspired to come here. Levi died before returning to Texas, but his family came in 1839 and settled in Tyler County during the time when Texas was a country of its own, The Republic of Texas. Among those who came to Tyler County were Levi’s brother, William Lindsey Mann, b. 1811 in South Carolina, and his wife, Matilda Commack, and several young children. They brought with them William Lindsey Mann’s widowed mother, Eleanor Baker (Mrs. Ralph) Mann, b. 1790 in South Carolina, and several of her younger children who still lived at home, including John Mann, b. 1828, and Archibald Mann, b. 1830, both born while the family was still in Alabama. Older and most dominant of the graves in the cemetery are those of William Lindsey Mann and his wife, enclosed by a white picket fence and covered by a tin roof. Beside them is the large marker for one of his sons, Rev. Samuel Edward (Preacher Sam) Mann and his wife, whose family name was Enloe. Nearby is the grave of William Lindsey Mann’s mother, Eleanor Baker Mann, which was relocated to the Mann Cemetery from the nearby Davis Cemetery in 1997. To reach the Mann Cemetery, travel north on US 69 out of Woodville Texas, through Doucette and into Colmesneil. Turn left out of Colmesneil onto FM 256, travel a short distance and curve to the right onto FM 1745. Continuing several miles down FM 1745 cross Billams Creek, pass the Enloe Mill historical marker on the left, then pass the historical marker in front of the old Enloe home on the right. Go about one half mile more and turn right onto the small unpaved road, CR 2836, which dead ends into the Mann Cemetery. For help in locating graves, I’ve sectioned the cemetery into eleven blocks and while the names below are arranged alphabetically, the section number is listed beside each. There are no graves in section one, and very few in section two. (Throughout the cemetery are many small unmarked stones denoting unmarked graves, or designating (reserving) future burial plots. From old cemetery records provided by Mary Mann, as recorded by Ann Crews (Mrs. Jim) Laird, I’ve also included names of people buried there whose graves are not marked. A few headstones are in poor condition and can not be read.) As you enter the gate (located centrally on the south side), turn immediately right and proceed to the southeastern corner of the fence. There begins section one. The blocks are arranged in this order: 11 10 9 4 3 11 10 8 5 2 11 10 7 6 1 GATE IS HERE _______________________________________________________________________________ Allen, Docia b. 1888 4 d. 1949 Wonderful mother Footstone: D.A.
