JUDGE AND SHERIFF IN A DISAGREEMENT 

In sentencing Mrs. Nanny Wilson to the penitentiary, Judge Bond recited
reasons that she not be taken in company with negroes and other prisoners and
committed her to the custody of Miss Nannie Jamieson, district clerk, the
latter agreeing to accompany the woman to Huntsville.  Sheriff Carpenter
declined to obey the order of the court and refused to surrender the prisoner
to anyone other than the regular transfer agent of the penitentiary. Judge
Bond ordered a fine of $100.00 assessed against Sheriff Carpenter, but Deputy
Blackwell left Wednesday morning with Mrs.Wilson, bound for Huntsville. This
conflict of authority was discovered by the reporter Wednesday morning in a
usual inspection of the criminal docket and this report is made from the
record and not from rumor or hearsay. The Herald prints it as a matter of
news and not for or against any individual.
