Mr. Bobo's name is not in the list of men who actually drew the black beans. Your ancestor most likely died before the black bean drawing. Our records indicate that there was indeed a Lynn Bobo who fought in the battle at Mier. He was wounded during the battle. Our records show that he had at least a broken thigh. Mr. Bobo was kept in Mier for about 9 weeks to recover from his wounds along with a few other prisoners. These prisoners were then marched to Mexico City to be imprisoned there. Our records then show that he died at Matamoros in late February or early March 1843. The black beans were drawn on March 25, 1843. I got this information from a book written by J.M. Nance and published by Eaking Press in Austin, Texas. The name of the book is Dare-Devils All: Texas Mier Expedition. We do have the names of all the men in the Mier Expedition written on a plaque on the Monument here. Mr. Bobo's name is on that plaque with a star beside it indicating that he died or was killed in Mexico. If you have any more questions, please do not hesitate to contact us again. Green 1845, Edited by Sam W Haynes, Copyright 1993 by W. Thomas Taylor Page 42: http://www.smu.edu/swcenter.tjgreen/tjg_042.htm "Most of these men called upon us not to leave them in language which would have wrung tears from hearts of stone. Some implored us for mercy’s sake, to blow out their brains, and ease them of their misery; while there were some, more iron-nerved than the rest, who rolled out withering imprecations upon the enemy, and called upon us, for the honour of our country, never to surrender. One of these brave fellows, whose thigh was broken, called me to him, and drew from his belt a pair of silver-mounted pistols, which he placed in my hand, with tears in his eyes, saying, "General, this is all I can do for you now." *14 This scene was distressing beyond any power of utterance." *14 This was young Bobo, of South Carolina Page 264: http://www.smu.edu/swcenter.tjgreen/tjg_264.htm 14. “Lynn Bobo was taken to Matamoros, where he died.” 300 YEARS IN VICTORIA COUNTY Edited by Roy Grimes Cc: 1968 Page 173: “The fighting went on until 2 p.m. on the day after Christmas, some of the Texians claiming that Ampudia suffered as many as 600 killed. Fisher had 30 men killed or wounded, the dead including two of Capt. Ewen Cameron’s men from Victoria, Dr. Isaac Tower of New York and Lynn Bobo of North Carolina.” Page 206: “The privates of Cameron’s company from Victoria in the Mier Expedition were George Anderson of Scotland, Lynn Bobo of South Carolina,” “Of the Victoria participants, two were killed in the fighting at Mier, Dr. Isaac Tower and Lynn Bobo.” TAX RECORDS: Lynn Bobo is listed in the 1841 tax records of Victoria County. REPUBLIC OF TEXAS CLAIMS The Republic Claims are divided into four series: Audited Claims, Public Debt Claims, Republic Pensions and Unpaid and Miscellaneous Claims. Source: Texas State Library and Archives The Lynn Bobo claims are all defined as "Public Debt Claims" Definition of "Public Debt Claims" "Public Debt Claims is that many of the claims were settled by issuing one voucher to cover the separate claims of a large number of persons who had performed the same service. For example, Public Debt voucher 1634 covers payment for "Balance of Pay for Service as Minute Men in 1841." The voucher pays the debt described in certificates #3396 (John Anderson) through #3569 (Patrick Quinn)---173 certificates. The voucher and the entry in the Public Debt Warrant Register are in the name of the first certificate issued: John Anderson. All the information regarding the 173 men and their service as Minute Men, as well as documentation of attorneys and heirs will be found in this one record. Additional information on the laws relating to Public Debt may be found on the Laws About Republic Claims page. Source: Texas State Library and Archives.
