Susan Hawkins, Texas Tombstone Project Coordinator hawkins@texoma.net ***************************************************************** Old Salem / Salem Cemetery Waller County, Texas PARTIAL LISTING Location: From Hempstead, Texas, travel Hwy. 6 north to Farm Road 1736. Take FR 1736 West about 1 ˝ miles. You will see a Texas Historical Marker indicator on the left the marker is for Old Salem Cemetery. Immediately before you get to the marker, take the road to the left. The cemetery entrance is only about 1/10 of a mile; when the road veers left, take the dirt road to the right and you’ll come to the gate. Old Salem / Salem Cemetery are now the same. Description: Salem Cemetery is enclosed with a chain link fence. The gate is unlocked. It is still in use today. The older graves are mainly located toward the back of the cemetery and many are in poor repair. The cemetery ground has a great many trees, shows signs of upkeep, and is lovely. Many headstones are illegible, due to age and discoloration and some are broken. Listed below is the information contained on the historical marker: TEXAS HISTORICAL COMMISSION OLD SALEM CEMETERY This burial ground originally served the family of T. B. White. His wife Elizabeth (d. 1857) and her father Henry Kirby (d. 1854) are interred here. White sold ten adjoining acres to the Salem Association in 1853 as a site for construction of a Masonic Lodge Hall and Academy. The site became a public cemetery after that date. The earliest marked grave is that of Jane McCullen (1788-1851). Also buried here is Francis J. Cooke, a Veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto. A cemetery association was established in 1949 to provide maintenance for the burial ground. (1980). Inscriptions are marked with quotation marks, my comments are in ( ). A second visit in the near future will attempt to provide information marked with (?) and the remaining graves listing.
