BURTON 1835 - 1915 Additional Comments: Born Travis Jefferson Burton on 4 Feb 1835 in Washington County, TX, one of 11 children to John M. Burton and Elizabeth Maury Thomson. John M. Burton was the founder of Burton, TX. He enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1862 and served until the close of the war. He was a Captain in Lusk's Company F, 21st Texas Cavalry (1st Texas Lancers), commanded by Col. Carter. He was promoted to 2nd Lt. by Gen. E. Kirby Smith and then to 1st Sergeant. He married Amanda Jane Jones on 15 May 1858 in Washington County and had a son, William Alexander Burton. He died on 28 Dec 1915 and was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery with his family.
