No. 11 Friday August 20, 1909 Wheeler, Wheeler County, Texas Jno. T. Hilburn Editor and Proprietor (front page) History The Old School House The old school house which for several years has been deemed sufficient to accommodate the scholastics of this community, and which has served the double purpose of school house and church, has yielded its place to a more substantial and commodious building, and as we go to press is passing our window and in a few hours will be on its new foundation on the west side of the square. Instead of being a place where young ideas are taught to shoot, Hold Bro's., will fill it with groceries. Its mute appeal will now be to the appetites of the hungry instead of to the aspirations of those who thirst for knowledge. Local Tidbits (no column heading) Cream Supper Everybody is invited to attend the ice cream supper at the Wagner school house Saturday night, August 28. Proceeds to go toward painting the school building. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - One advantage that a railroad to Rising Star would have over other lines is that it would have to carry no sand box. If some one should grease the track or it should get sick from any reason, all the fireman would have to do is step out with his shovel and put the sand on. The Rising Star sand is especially good for other purposes, also. It produces the finest kind of fruit, vegetables, corn, cotton and oats in abundance. - Rising Star X-Ray The same can be said of Wheeler county. The sand may be more abundant in Eastland, but when it comes to the quality, Wheeler has got you "skinned." We have shuffled through both, and know whereof we speak. - - - - - - - - - - - - - Old Hard-times is given too much prominence. If people would quit heralding his approach and giving him so much free advertising he would go out of business. - - - - - - - - - - - - - Grandma Rogers is spending a few days in McLean. - - - - - - - - - - - - - R. B. Rogers and J. E. Stanley are attending court in Clinton, Okla., this week. Note: no page numbers so I will use front page, inside front page, inside back page and back page. Local News (front page) Railroad Proposition Wheeler is now up against another railroad proposition. A Mr. Davis from San Antonio, had a meeting with a number of the representative citizens of this place, and laid before them his plan of building a road from San Antonio to Miami, approximately 500 miles in length. He also submitted a proposition to Wheeler, which they now have under advisement. What the final outcome will be remains to be seen. The outside limit for the road is three years. Wheeler wants a road and is ready to put up a tempting bonus for the first road, but it must be straight business. Advertisements (front page) WHY GO ELSEWHERE To trade when I can sell you goods as cheap if not cheaper, than any dry goods house in the county. My stock is all new and up-to-date, and if people of this town and country will give me their support I promise to give you the goods at the most reasonable prices. W. E. PENNINGTON Personal Articles (front page) Mr. Jno. Callans, from the east side of the county, is erect-[ing] a neat little house on the east side of town, and when completed, will move his family here so as to give his children the advantage of a good school. Mr. Zac Miller has rented the Ben Cree house and will move here to school his children. Mrs. Sam Taylor, who lives in the western part of the county, has been adjudged insane and is now in jail at Mobeetie. It is a burning shame that our great state will suffer these unfortunates to languish in jail for want of room at our asylums, while she spends thousands upon other objects less worthy. Mr. Scarborough brought in the finest load of watermelons one day this week we have seen this season. Nuptials. A. M. Hilburn, editor of the Wheeler County Texan, and brother of ye editor, after ample experience in "single blessedness," has broken the benedictine ranks, and taken to himself a helpmate. He and Miss Mamie Duncan of Shamrock, were quietly married the 14th inst., and immediately boarded the train for Amarillo, where they will spend a few days after which they will return and be at home in Shamrock. The bride is the beautiful and accomplished daughter of Commissioner J. G. Duncan and is deservedly popular. The groom is - suffice it to say - the brother of ye editor. The Sun extends congratulations, and wishes for the happy couple smoothe sailing over the matrimonial sea. You did right old boy, in following the example of your younger brother. THE WHEELER SUN Vol.2. No. 11. Wheeler, Wheeler County, Texas Friday, August 20, 1909 Jno. T. Hilburn Editor and Proprietor (front page) To all Whom it May Concern Owing to the many damaging statements circulated by some people (who, by the way are incapable of expressing a correct opinion on the subject) as to the unsoundness and instability of the newly erected concrete school building, We submit the following for the benefit of those patrons who may have been in any way affected by the false ru-rumors: [sic] Mr. John Haynes of McLean, Tex., a man who has had lots of experience in concrete buildings, declares the walls to be absolutely safe and sound. Mr. Frank Helton of Frye, Tex., an expert on all matters pertaining to concrete buildings, was hired to inspect the house and says it is very firm and solid, and there is no danger at all of the building collapsing as a good many people seem inclined to think it will do. Mr. Holloway of Shamrock, says he is willing to sign a statement vouching for the soundness of the building. We hope that this will satisfy all sensible people that the house is safe and sound, and will dispel all thoughts of fear from their minds. G. B. Cole R. Rogers R. E. Blackerby Trustees. __________________________ Every person interested in the welfare of their homes, children school come out to the school meeting tomorrow evening at three o'clock up in the court house where we will have a real heart to heart talk about school and school work. For the benefit of some, we would lika [sic] to say that there will not be a collection. J. A. Spikes, Principal. ___________________________ Mr. Tiemon, of the firm of Harmon & Tiemon of Shamrock, passed through here Wednesday enroute to Mobeetie. Harmon & Tiemon will move the bulk of dry goods to Mobeetie as soon as they can arrange for a building. ___________________________ Where is the Commercial Club? It was our understanding that there was to be a meeting of the Commercial Club and citizens last evening, and that business of the highest importance was to come before it. Especially was the railroad proposition to be considered. So far as we have been able to learn there was no meeting. Where was the Club? Has it suffered its enthusiasm to evaporate? It is well enough to talk, but talking amounts to little if we haven't courage and interest enough to meet and look a cool business proposition squarely in the face. A Club that don't do anything but talk will not do much to build up a town. Let us come alive. ________________________ Marriage license were issued this week to Mr. W. A. Armstrong of amarillo [sic] and Miss Ida Powell of Mobeetie. ________________________ Advertisement (front page) WHEELER REAL ESTATE CO. R. M. STONE, Mgr.
