Journey's End Cemetery was founded in the fall of 1933. It was known as the Citizens of Burkburnett Colored Cemetery. The oldest burial that we have been able to find is James Graham aged 4 months and 17 days who died of a "food infection" in 1936. The cemetery has gone through many names over the years. It has also been known as the "Colored Folks Cemetery," "Community Cemetery," and the "Broadnax-Freeman Cemetery" after the families buried there. In the year 2000, members of the Providence Baptist Church formed a committee to take care of the cemetery and renamed the cemetery "Journey's End." Journey's End Cemetery has had limited care over the years. There is no fence around the approximately two acres the cemetery encompasses. For many years due to segregation, people of color who lived in the Burkburnett area were not allowed to be buried in the Burkburnett Memorial Cemetery. Many of the people who were buried in the cemetery or had family buried in the cemetery had limited schooling and unfortunately the burials were not recorded. Over the years the headstones have been stolen or broken. For our records we have relied on the few remaining headstones, information given orally by Mr. Howard Locklin and Mrs. Pat Bishop, relatives or church members, funeral programs that were collected by Mrs. Helen Locklin, funeral home records from Owen and Brumley, and death certificates. Due to lack of information on some of the names, we have not been able to find any dates or confirmations of burials but we have included these names under the headings of "possibles." We have included where [if possible] our information has come from but if no headstone is listed and no source is given our information came orally. We also have included family information when known as a research aid. One note to researchers is that many times the funeral programs or death certificates stated that the person was buried in Burkburnett cemetery. But it was understood in days of segregation and many years after that this meant the "Colored" cemetery not the "Memorial" cemetery, especially when the funeral services were held at the church.
