I have resided in the state of Texas since 1885 and in Wichita Falls for 5 years. My husband's full name was LORENZO BENSON SMITH and he died Sept 15, 1907. His command was originally organized in Mississippi and he served from 1861 to 1865. He was in Company F, 26 Mississippi Joe Davis Brigade. I have knowm him since his childhood (b) near Corinth in Mississippi. I know that he enlisted in the 26th Mississippi Regiment in 1861 at Corinth, Mississippi and re-enlisted at Bowling Green, KY and served about 4 years until close of war. I know that he was not commissioned as an officer in the CSA. I know that he was not serving under the provisions of conscript law. I know that Mrs MARY E SMITH has been a resident of the State of TX since the year 1885. I was in the calvary in the CSA. I was his neighbor and know that he enlisted and that he returned home at the close of the war. I know of no other person in that Company and Regiment by that name. I know that he served in the infantry. I know that he neither deserted or abandoned his command. s/ Wm Newman, 24 Nov 1913 Statement of witness E. A. SMITH, 58 years, of Mabank, Kaufman County, TX I am a brother of L B SMITH and have known him during his life and first knew him at Corinth Mississippi. I know that he enlisted in Hindmans Company, 26th Mississippi Regiment in 1861 and re-enlisted at Bowling Green, KY for 4 years until close of War. I know that MARY E SMITH has been a bona-fide resident of Texas for 28 years since 1885.
