A. McConnell Succumbs to Injuries Received When Clothing Is Ignited Mra. J. A. McConnell, aged 68, died at eleven o'clock this morning at the Wichita General hospital from the effects of burns sustained early this morning. Mrs. McConnell has been staying at the home of M. L. Tittle, 1617 Ninth street and about three o'clock this morning arose to light the heater in her room; she had been suffering from grippe, and had become cold. Mr. and Mrs. Tittle were awakened by her screams and rushed into her room to find her night clothing a mass of flames. Before the flames could be extinguished, Mrs. McConnell had been burned over practically her entire body. She was given medical treatment and taken to the Wichita General Hospital, where it was soon seen that she could not survive. Mr. and Mrs. Tittle were both burned about the hands in extinguishing the flames, Mrs. Tilles injuies being quite severe. Quilts and blankets were used in an effort to smother the flames and several blankets were destroyed before the blazing garments had been extinguished. In spite of her age and the great pain, Mrs. Mcconnell bore her sufferings with wonderful fortitude and was able to give a coherent account of what happened. She had dozed while sitting by the fire, and her night clothing had come in contact with the flame before she realized her danger. The fire had been turned out when she retired, about nine o'clock, and at that time whe seemed to be inproving from her attack of grippe. Later in the night she awoke and feeling cold, arose to light the heater, sitting by the fire. Mrs. McConnell had returned only recently from a visit to daughters at Rockwall and Sulphur Springs. The funeral will be held tomorrow at Lawrence, Kaufman County, Texas, where the body will be forwarded on tonight's southbound Denver. Surviving are four sons, L. E. and F. E. McConnell, of McConnell Brothers; H. E. Mcconnell, in the insurance business, all of this city; E. E. McConnell of Snyder, Texas; three daughters, Mrs. D. V. Landry of Sulphur Springs, Mrs. W. L. Rhodes of Gossett, Texas, and Mrs. W. T. Mitchell of Rockwall. Mrs. McConnell had been an earnest member of the Christian church for many years, and the pastor of that church will officiate at the funeral tomorrow. All three of the sons residing in this city will attend the funeral. ************************************************************************ USGENWEB ARCHIVES NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by any other organization or persons.
