Smith Jr., 85, died Wednesday, Jan. 3,2001, at his home after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Second Baptist Church with the Rev. Jack Gilliland, pastor, and District Judge Tom Neely officiating. Interment will be in Eastview Cemetery under direction of Sullivan Funeral Home. Smith was born Aug. 21, 1915, in Vernon, a son of the late Walter B. Smith Sr. and Emma Carson Smith. He married Loraine Cocks in Vernon in 1978. Along-time resident of Winder, Ga., before moving to Vernon, he was a veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion. He was also a member of the Second Baptist Church and the J. Carl Smith Sunday School class and a former member of the Santa Rosa Palomino Club and the Vernon Riding Club. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Jane Hecht of Columbus, Ga., and Marie Lawrence of Pelham, Ga.; a son, Michael May of College Station; three sisters, Emma Pliler and Johnnie Parks of Winder, Ga., and Joy Thomas of Atlanta, Ga.; a brother, Paul Brookshire of Kingsport, Tenn.; and six grandchildren. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Second Baptist Church. Vina Townson, 101, died Friday, Jan. 5,2001, in a local nursing home after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Sullivan Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. David Jones and the Rev. Ron Fox officiating. Interment will be in Eastview Cemetery. Townson was born Nov. 14, 1899, in Hill County, Texas, a daughter of the late Melton E. (Buck) and Jo Anna Lackey. She married William Townson in 1916 and he preceded her in death in 1934. A resident of Wilbarger County since October of 1926, she was a farmer and homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Dan (Polly) Yoakum of Vernon; three sons Johnny Townson and George Townson, both of Vernon, and-Jimmy Townson of Odessa; 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 28 great-great-grandchildren and seven great-great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Billie Woodrow, in 1998, as well as four sisters, 'a brother, one grandson and a great-great-great- granddaughter. Visitation will be from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church or a favorite charity. W.T. (Bill) McCourt, 74, died Friday, Jan. 5,2001, in a local hospital after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Sullivan Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ron Fox and the Rev. David Fox officiating. Interment will be in Eastview Cemetery. McCourt was born Sept. 6, 1926, in Perry County, Ark., a son of the late Dave Ray and Lillie Blanch James McCourt. He married Patsy Morrow on July 17, 1948, in Vernon. resident of Wilbarger County for most of his life, he was a retired construction supervisor with Lone Star Gas and a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the Berean Sunday School Class. He was an avid supporter of Kid League baseball and enjoyed working with horses. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Lisa Deeann McCourt of Vernon; and two grandsons. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest McCourt. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Calvary Baptist Church or the Boys and Girls Club. Sue Hurt, 78, died Wednesday, Jan. 3,2001, in a Paducah nursing center after a brief illness. Graveside funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Eastview Cemetery with David Alessandro officiating. Arrangements are under direction of Sullivan Funeral Home. Hurt was born Sept 15, 1922, in Hopkins County, Texas a daughter of Tom and Nina Stubblefield Helton. She married Robert Dervin Hurt on Nov. 18, 1941, in Frederick, Okla., and he preceded her in death. She and her husband operated a watch repair business and a jewelry store in Borger before moving to Paducah in 1974. She later worked at Bigham Drug Store and Jeter Pharmacy in Paducah, then retired from Thriftway Grocery. She was a member of the Paducah Church of Christ. Surviving are a brother, Forrest Helton of Vernon; three sisters, Jewel Patterson of Lumberton, Doris Hall of Arlington, Texas, and Betty Moore of Paducah; and several nieces and nephews. A sister, Verna Ruth Hale, also preceded him in death. Visitation will be from 2 to 3:45 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. James Earl Hartley Sr., 70, of Odessa, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at his residence. He was the father of Glenn Ray Hartley of Vernon. He was a retired oilfield worker. Pure Garza, 86, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at a local hospital. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the New Life Baptist Church with the Rev, Leo Flores, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Eastview Cemetery under direction of Sullivan Funeral Home. Garza was born May 1, 1914, in Coleman, Texas, the daughter of the late Antonio and Beatrice Rendon Garza. She worked for Bluebonnet Laundry for more than 20 years and was a member of the New Life Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, Hector Rosales of Vernon; a daughter, Mary Ramirez of Vernon; two brothers, Leo Garza of Vernon and Herbey Garza of Lansing, Mich.; three sisters, Liberty Boriones of Lakin, Kan., Otila G. Arrangements are under direction of Sullivan Funeral Home. Atkisson was born April 23, 1922, in Vernon, a daughter of the late W.C. and Elidia Brown King. She was a mall carrier for Acme Trucking, a homemaker and a Baptist. Surviving are two sons, Curtis Atkisson and Dennis Atkisson, both of Galena Park, Texas; two daughters, Wanda Kieschnick of Vernon and Jeanette Willis of Tulsa, Okla.; a brother, Wilburn King of Vernon; a stepbrother, Donny King of Vernon; a stepsister, Pat Hopkins of Chillicothe; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. CROWELL (Spl) James S. (Cotton) Owens Jr., 80, a long-time Foard County resident, died Monday, Jan. 8,2001, in a Wichita Falls hospital. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday in Womack-Manard Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steve Brooks, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Crowell, officiating. Interment will be inCrowell Cemetery. Owens was born Sept. 20, 1920, in Foard County. He graduated from Crowell High School and married Marie Dunn on April 25, 1941, in Oklahoma. She preceded him in death on April 6, 1981. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a farmer and commercial plumber and formerly lived in Lovington and Ruidoso, N.M. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Crowell VFW, and a former member of Lions Clubs in Lovington and Ruidoso. Surviving are a son, Jimmye Owens of Roswell, N.M., and two grandchildren. O.C. Daniels, QUANAH (Spl.) O.C. Daniels, 71, of Quanah, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, in a Wichita Falls. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Price-Jackson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jason Stidham officiating. Interment was in Quanah Memorial Park under direction of Price-Jackson Funeral Home. Daniels was born June 1, 1929, in Hardeman County. A lifetime area resident, he was a shift foreman for Quanah Cotton Oil Mill. Surviving are a brother, Wayne. Jimmie Ava Whitehead Thompson, 78, of Vernon died Wednesday Jan. 10, 2001, in a Wichita Falls hospital Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sullivan Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev Nancy Moore officiating. Interment will be in Wilbarger Memorial Park. Thompson was born Sept. 22, 1922 in Wilson, Okla., a daughter of the late John Gordon and Flossie Viola Nance Whitehead. She married Harry E. Thompson on May 24, 1941, and he preceded her in death on July 17, 1976. A resident of Vernon since 1929, she graduated from South Lockett School and was a retired cashier for the Vernon Intermediate School cafeteria. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, Rebekah Lodge and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Surviving are three sons, Gordon L Thompson and Ronnie D. Thompson, both of Vernon, and Harry E. Thompson Jr. of Edmond, Okla.; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Johnnie Mae Herriage. Ruby Owen, 88, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, in a local hospital after a lengthy illness. Owen was born May 16,1912, in Merit, Texas, a daughter of the late J.C. and Sally Pryor Christopher. She married William Elmer Owen on July 6, 1930, in Vernon, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 19, 1990. She was a homemaker and had been a resident of Vernon for most of her life. Surviving are a daughter, Billie Broday a sister Catherine Baker of Vernon; five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Arrangements are under direction of Johnson Funeral Home of Childress. Broom was born Sept. 20,1903, in Lamar County, a daughter of the late Joe and Maude E. Buchanan Morgan. She married Homer Scott, who preceded her in death in 1945. She was a homemaker and a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Vernon. Surviving are a daughter, Claudene Allison of Childress; two sons, Tex Arlen Scott of Metairie, La., and Tommy V. Scott of Springtown; two sisters, Murle Anderson of Smyrna, Ga., and Edna Maxwell of Pampa 12 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren and greatgreat-grandchildren. Leonor A. Medina, 73, of Amarillo, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001. She was the mother of Mary Garcia of Quanah. Also surviving are her husband, five sons, four other daughters, four brothers, a sister, 39 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren. William H. Nielsen, Former Vernon resident William H. Nielsen, 99, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at Lutheran Convalescent Home in St. Louis, Mo. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Faith Lutheran Church in Stephenville with the Rev. Tom Konz officiating. Interment will be in Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Stephenville under direction of Lacy Funeral Home. Nielsen was born Nov. 12, 1901, in Tobias, Neb. He married Emma Moerbe on July 4, 1926, in Aleman, Texas, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 3, 1983. He was a retired elementary, teacher and principal at Lutheran schools in Hamilton, Thorndale and Vernon. Surviving are two sons, William Nielsen of Simi Valley, calif., and George Nielsen of Rapid City, S.D.; a daughter, Florence Christiansen of O'Fallon, Mo.; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Bunch on Dec. 25, 1936, in Paris, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 8, 1978, A resident of Vernon since 1937, she was a retired employee of Vernon Manufacturing Company and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was an avid gardener. Surviving are a daughter, Marthella Russell of .Richardson; a son, Howard Wayne Bunch of Sachie, Texas; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Algie Groves, Former Quanah resident Algie Groves, 91, of Roaring Springs, died Sunday, Jan. 14, in a Lubbock hospital. Graveside funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Roaring Springs Cemetery with the Rev. Rickey Lawrence officiating. Arrangements are under direction of Seigler Funeral Home of Matador. Groves was born Oct. 10, 1909, in Stonewall County. He moved to Matador as a child and graduated from Matador High School. He married Rita Nichols on Nov. 16, 1935, in Childress. A resident of California and Quanah for several years before moving to Roaring Springs, he retired in 1974 as resident engineer of the Texas Highway Department in Matador after 38 years of service. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Matador Masonic Lodge No. 824, Lubbock Scottish Rite Bodies and the Amarillo Red Cross of Constantine. Surviving are his wife; three sons, James Groves of Arcadia, Calif., Pat Groves of Los Altos Hills, Calif. , and Mike Groves of San Jose, Calif.; a brother, Dick Groves of San Antonio; two sisters, Avis Dooley of Arlington and Hattie Tomlinson of Katy; and three grandchildren. Conkling, 70, of Denton, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, in a Denton hospital after a lengthy illness. He was a brother of Fred Conkling of Vernon. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Ola Conkling, and a brother, John. Will Haseloff, 27, of Childress, died Sunday, Jan. 14,2001. He was a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. William C. He was a warehouse and shipping employee of Panhandle Veterinary Supply. Folley, 86, of Vernon, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, in a Wichita Falls hospital after a brief illness. Folley was born June 13, 1914, in Hollis, Okla., a daughter of the late William P. and May Bell Tillman York. She married Louis A. Folley on Nov. 23,1932, in Mangum Okla., and he preceded her in death March 29,1979. A resident, of the Northside community from 1936 to 1987, when she moved to Vernon, she was a farmer and asales clerk at J.C. Penny. She was a member of the Wilbarger Street Church of Christ, the Farm Club and several church groups. Surviving are two brothers, RL York of Wichita Falls and Harold P. York of Walnut Creek, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. Four brothers, William Truman York, Roger Curtis York, Bobbie York and Galen York, and a stepbrother, Carl Ivey, also preceded her in death. Greer was born April 25, 1916, in Post, Texas, a daughter of the late Frank and Emma Greenfield Harrell. She married Kenneth Greer on July 2, 1934, in Mangum, Okla. A graduate of Frederick, Okla., High School, she attended business school at Cleburne. She moved to Vernon from Wichita Falls in 1964. She was a homemaker and a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Gail Greer Kemp of Albuquerque, N.M.; a son, James Allen Greer of Corpus Christi; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Louise Fisch, CROWELL (Spl.) - Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Womack-Manard Funeral Home Chapel for Louise Fisch, 90, of Crowell, who died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, in a Wichita Falls hospital. Fisch was born Sept. 25, 1910, in Crowell, and married Irving (Isadore) Fisch in 1929 in Waurika, Okla. He preceded her in death on Sept. 29, 1989. A graduate of Crowell High School, she and her husband owned and operated Fisch' s1 Department Store in Crowell for; many years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Crowell Business and Professional Women's organization. Surviving are a daughter, Carole Stepp of Los Angeles, Calif.; two sisters, De Alva Gillespie of Crowell and Virginia Thompson of Fort Worth; and two brothers, Leslie Thomas of Crowell and Ray Thomas of Santa Fe, N.M. Vannoy Taylor, QUANAH (Spl.) - Vannoy Lindsey Taylor, 79, of Quanah, died Friday, Jan. 19, 20Q1, in a Wichita Falls hospital. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. John Spangler, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church, and the Rev. Jesse Dea, retired Methodist minister, officiating. Taylor was born Dec. 6, 1921, in Quanah, a daughter of the late Alfred Allen and Myrtle Ellen Maginnis Lindsey. She married Paul Oliver Taylor on July 24, 1938, in Frederick, Okla., and he preceded her in death on Jan. 3, 2000. A homemaker, she was a lifetime resident of Quanah and a graduate of Quanah High School, She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Quanah Art League and Rebekah Lodge.Surviving are a son, Allen Taylor of San Antonio; a daughter, Paula Taylor of San Antonio; and two grandsons. Interment will be in Eastview Cemetery Lowe was Dec. 20,1907, in Indian Territory, Okla., a daughter of the late C.O. and Ollie Jane Knight Forbess. She married Arnie W. Love on Sept. 30, 1925, in Vernon. He preceded her in death in 1998. A resident of Wilbarger County since the early 1920s, she was a homemaker and member of The Church of Christ.Survivors include a son, Bobby W. Lowe of Vernon; a daughter, Anne Dillon of Mission, Texas; a brother, Oliver Forbess of Vernon; a sister, Frances Oates of Malvern, Ark.; four grandchildren; five great- grandchildren and a greatgreat-grandchild. Passmore was born July 13, 1917, at Sylvia, Kan., a son of the late Albert Wesley and Grace Fern Chlothier Passmore. He married Ruth Clarida on Aug. 20, 1939 at Sylvia, and she preceded death on Dec. 25, 1997. A resident of Vernon since 1939, he was an educator in the Vernon Independent School District for more than 40 years. He was a member of the Wilbarger Street Church of Christ, where he was a former elder and minister. He was also a member of the Optimist Club, Chamber of Commerce and the Texas Retired Teachers Association. Surviving are a son, Phillip L. Passmore of St. Charles, Ill.; a daughter, Sherry Sue Passmore of Vernon; a sister, Margaret F. Cash of Sun City, Calif.; and three grandchildren. Hayter was born April 14,1918, in Carnegie, Okla., a daughter of the late Berton Franklin and Dyccie Imhoff Hawkins. She married Duward Hayter on Nov. 25, 1947, in Norman, Okla., and he preceded her in death on April 6, 1988. A longtime resident of Borger before moving to Vernon in 1995, she was a registered dietician with Highland General Hospital, Coronado Hospita1 in Pampa and North plains Hospital in forger. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Borger, United Methodist Women, Parent Teachers Association, Association of American University Women, American Dietician Association and a Girl Scout leader. Surviving are a daughter, Jeanne Tucker of Vernon; a son, John Hayter of Nacogdoches; two sisters, Thelma Segnar and Marie Galloway, both of Tahlequah, Okla.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Dale Hawkins, Harold Barton Hawkins and Frank Hawkins. Mildred Canafax , Graveside funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday at Eastview Cemetery for Mildred Canafax, 92, of Vernon, who died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, in a Wichita Falls care center after a lengthy illness. Canafax was born April 28, 1908 , in Wills Point, a daughter of the late Laban Quintin and Pearl Stubblefield Rowden. She married Oran Canafax on Feb. 26, 1937, in Fort Worth, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 27, 1991. A retired school teacher and waitress, she moved from Vernon to Breckenridge in 1968, then later returned to Vernon. She was a member of the Wilbarger Street Church of Christ. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Loyd (Mattie Lee) Rainwater of Vernon; and several nieces and nephews. Jack C. Barnett, CHILLICOTHE (Spl.) Jack C. Barnett, 72, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, in a Wichita Falls hospital. Funeral services will be at 11 am. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church of Chillicothe with the Rev. Roy Canada, the Rev. Barnett was born Aug. 11, 1928, at Chillicothe, a son of Aitha B Barnett and the late Oren W. Barnett. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Chillicothe. He married Geneva Yost Ketchersid in October of 1986 in Altus, Okla. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was heavy equipment operator and pipefitter. He had been a resident of Vernon since 1985 and was a Baptist and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Surviving are his wife; three sons, Berl Wayne Bridwell of Flower Mound, Lynn Ketchersid of Pampa and Dale Ketchersid of Vernon; three daughters, Sherry Timmons of Canadian, Lois Gibbs and Patty Hall of Vernon; two brothers, Vernon (Pete) Bridwell of White Deer and Raymond Bridwell of Pampa five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Walter K. Herchman, 97, died Monday, Jan. 22,2001, in a local hospital after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be at 10 am. Wednesday at Sullivan Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. He married Annie Zajicek on Dec. 6, 1922, in Vernon, and she preceded him in death on June 28, 1993. A U.S. Army veteran, he was a retired farmer and trucker and a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. Surviving are two sisters, Margaret Phillips of Wichita Falls and ackie Woosley of Ray City, Ga.; and a number of nieces and nephews. The family will be at 1603 Parker Drive in Vernon. Eva Faye Blevins, QUANAH (Spl.) Graveside funeral services were held Saturday at Quanah Memorial Park for Eva Faye Blevins, 80, of Quanah, who died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, in a Wichita Falls hospital. Blevins was born May 22, 1920, in Hardeman County, a daughter of the late William and Katherine Barnett Shelton. She married Jack Blevins in November of 1950 in Vernon, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 31, 1979. A lifetime resident of Hardeman County, she was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church. Surviving is a sister, Geraldine Hicks of Wichita Falls. She was also preceded in death by a brother, William A. Shelton, on Jan. 25, 1999, and a sister, Opal Batts, on Jan. 25, 2001. Roma Streety Scott, Chillicothe (Spl.) - Roma Streety Scott, 88, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, in a Wichita Falls hospital after a brief Illness. She was a member, of the Chillicothe Church of Christ. Surviving are a daughter, Ethel (Scotty) Cook of Iowa Park; a son, Veon Scott of Chillicothe; a brother, Wayne Streety of Paris, Texas; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Survivors include a sister, Freda Alexander of Dallas; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Carroll Diltz, Milton Diltz, Art Diltz, and Johnnie Diltz, a sister, Una Faye Poff, a daughter, Phyliss Wood, and a grandson, Roby Edwin Wood. A member of the First Apostolic Church, she attended Vernon schools and was a homemaker. Norman was born in Cottle County and married Dorothy Greening in Crowell. A resident of Clyde since 19$4, he had also lived in Baird and Albany. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a Disabled American Veteran. A Baptist, he worked in the Government Predator Control Program. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Vicky Martyn of Burleson; two sons, Hugh Norman Jr. of Albany and Leslie Norman of Throckmorton; two sisters, Betty Godwin of Bedford and Donna Badgwell of Keller; two brothers, Kenny Norman of Washington and Bobby Norman of Mineral Wells; five grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. June B. Williams, 85, of Wichita, Kan., a former resident of the Vernon area, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Old Mission Mortuary in Wichita. Surviving are two daughters, Claudia Palmiter of Apple Valley, Calif., and Betty Correia of Haysville, Kan.; 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Her husband, Vernon (Bud) Williams, and a son, Ray Hendrix, preceded her in death. Bryan Quillin, 53, of Vernon, died Tuesday, Jan.30, 2001, in a Wichita Falls hospital. Quillin was born Oct. 13,1947, in Crowell, a son of Carolita Jones Quillin and the late Truman, Bryan Quillin Sr. He married Sherian Anderson on Sept. 21, 1973, in Ardmore, Okla. A 1 965 graduate of Vernon High School, he attended Baylor University and served in the National Guard for six years. He was the owner of Chick Express from 1981 to 1999 and was a member of the First Baptist. Church of Vernon. Surviving are his wife; a son, Hudson Bryan Quillin of Vernon; two daughters, Sherian Shawn Quillin of Wichita Falls and Kelly Gall Quillin of Vernon; his mother, of Abilene; his stepmother, Floy Beth Binker Quillin of Seymour; and two sisters, Paula Ford of Abilene and Nancy long of Austin.. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Clay Duke, Mike Baskerville, Monty Hall, Bob Bolton, Pat Knight and Gene Howery.
