(Jack) Brownlow, 77, died Sunday, July 2,2000, in a Vernon hospital Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sullivan. Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in Wilbarger Memorial Park. Brownlow was born March 18, 1923, in Cottle County a son of the late Walter and Lillie Brownlow. He married Modene Benttn on Jan. 23, 1943, in Colorado Springs, and she preceded him in death on Feb. 19, 2000. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a retired courier with the Purolator Corporation and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Surviving are two sons, Milton Brownlow of Vernon and Russell Brownlow of Dallas; a daughter, Judie Plumlee of Houston; a brother, Edwin (Buck) Brownlow of Vernon; and four grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Vernon Regional Junior College vocational nursing program. _____________________________________________________________ Howard Glenn Baxter. Farmer Vernon resident Howard Glenn Baxter, 85, died Sunday, July 2,2000. in an Amarillo hospital after a brief illness. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sullivan Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in Wilbarger Memorial Park. Baxter was born Dec. 10,1914. in Millsap, Texas, a son of the late James Madison and Sarah Ella Seago Baxter. He married Ernesteene Jackson on Jan. 12, 1936, in Kansas, and she preceded him in death in 1988. A veteran of World War II, he was stationed in France with the 8th Air Force. He retired from Boyd and Baxter International Harvester in Vernon, and was also a shop manager at Miller Ford in Vernon and a salesman at Ed Hart Chevrolet in Electra. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Vernon and a longtime member of the Vernon and Electra Lions Clubs. Surviving are a son, Glenn Baxter of Birmingham, Ala; two daughters, Emma Jean Baxter of Lewisville, Texas, and Sarah Haseloff of Childress; three grand children and two great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by seven brothers and five sisters. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. _____________________________________________________________ Mary Gaither Hendrick Mary Gaither Hendrick, 80, a longtime resident of Vernon, died Sunday, July 2,2000. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Chuck Fisher, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Wilbarger Memorial Park under direction of Sullivan Funeral Home. Hendrick was born Oct 3, 1919, in Fort Worth, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Gaither Sr. She married James Ross Hendrick in 1946, and he preceded her in death. A graduate of Texas Tech University, she was a teacher in Vernon schools and later served as an administrative assistant for the First Presbyterian Church before becoming administrator of the Carnegie City-County Library, a position she held for 16 years until her retirement in 1984. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the American Association of University Women and a former member of the Yamparika Club. She was also a volunteer for the Red River Valley Museum. Surviving are two daughters, Jane Halencak of Crowell and Anne Hendrick-Thomas of Dallas; two nieces and two nephews. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or the Carnegie City-County Library. _____________________________________________________________ Marconi Eavenson CROWELL (Spl) Graveside funeral services were held Monday at Crowell Cemetery for Marconi Eavenson, 68, who died Saturday, July 1. 2000, in a Vernon hospital. The Rev. Richard White, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiated. Interment was under direction of Womack-Manard Funeral Home. Eavenson was born Feb. 17, 1932, in Childress County He married the former Betty Jo Black, who preceded him in death. He was a carpenter and a longtime resident of Crowell. Surviving are a daughter, Cheryl Lopez of New Braunfels; three sons, Mark Eavenson, Jerry Eavenson and John Eavenson, all of San Antonio; his mother, Daisy Post of Crowell; a sister, Joann Brockmier of Goodland, Kan.; three brothers, Edward Watson and George Everett Watson, both of Casa Grande, Ariz, and Vaneard Watson of Krum; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. _____________________________________________________________ Milton Burnett Chillicothe (Spl.) - Milton Burnett, 64, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, in a Chillicothe hospital. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church of Chillicothe with the Rev. Wallace Clay and the Rev. Jeff Weems officiating. Arrangements are under direction of Manard Funeral Home. Burnett was born Dec. 29, 1935, in Olustee, Okla., a son of the late John W. and Winnie Cook Burnett He married Margaret Causey on July 19, 1959, in Fort Worth. A resident of Chillicothe for most of his life, he was a retired computer data processor for Georgia Pacific in Quanah and a member of the Quanah Masonic Lodge and the First Baptist Church of Chillicothe, where he served as a deacon, music director and Sunday school director. He was a Scoutmaster for 23 years and was a Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow and served as district training chairman and a staff member of three Wood Badge courses. He received the Silver Beaver Award and the District Award of Merit and was named Scouter of the Year. He was also a member of the board of directors of the Hardeman County Outreach Center and the Copper Breaks State Park Volunteer Committee. He had been named Citizen of the Year by the Chillicothe Lions Club. Surviving are his wife; three sons, Michael Burnett of Richardson, Mark Burnett of Terrell and Mitchell Burnett of Okinawa, Japan; a daughter, Maria Biddy of Wichita Falls; two brothers, John Burnett of Chillicothe and Kenneth Burnett of Vernon; two sisters, Grace Hudson of Hedrick, Okla., and Iris Young of Shallowater, Texas; 10 grandchildren and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation will be from 6 to 8p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Troop 60 of the Boy Scouts of America, in care of the First National Bank of Chillicothe. Members and leaders of Troop 60 and Pack 60 will serve as honorary pallbearers. _____________________________________________________________ Lena Showers Former Vernon resident Lena Showers, 94, died Monday, July 3, 2000, in McAllen. Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at the Christian Church in McAllen. Showers was born Oct 23, 1905, in New Mexico as Lena Tolbert and moved to Vernon when she was two years old, making her home with an uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Baxter Ross. She graduated from Vernon High School in 1925 and worked at Russells Department Store until her marriage to Chester W. Showers, who owned Wilbarger Lumber Yard here. They moved to the Rio Grande Valley in 1945, and she had resided in Mission and McAllen since then. She was a former member of Central Christian Church in Vernon, where she taught a Sunday school class for young people. Surviving are two sons, Wayne Showers of McAllen and Jim Showers of Hillsboro; four grandchildren and several great-grandchildren _____________________________________________________________ Albert Moore QUANAH (Spl.) - Former Quanah resident Albert Moore, 54, of Amarillo, died Wednesday, June 28, 2000, in an Amarillo hospital. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Macedonia Baptist Church in Quanah with the Rev. Kenneth White of Odessa officiating. Interment will be in Quanah Memorial Park under direction of Price-Jackson Funeral Home. Moore was born March 1, 1946. in Quanah, a son of the late Jerry and Buler Pyle Moore. He married Jimmie Lee Love in March of 1969 in Quanah, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 8, 1975 A graduate of Douglas High School, he worked for the Quanah Cotton Compress and retired as a landscaper in Amarillo. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. Surviving are two sons, Leonard Love of Amarillo and Albert Keith Moore of Irving, three daughters, Twanda Moore and Chere Moore, both of Irving, and Renee Moore of Quanah; four sisters, Pearline Houston of Vernon and Mae Frances Carr, Emma Jean Williams and Helen Moore, all of Quanah; six brothers, Melvin Moore of San Diego, Chile, Joe Moore, Calvin Moore, Archie Moore and Elbert Moore, all of Odessa, and J. B. Moore of Midland; and 11 grandchildren. _____________________________________________________________ Sue Morrow Sue Morrow, 58, died Sunday, July 2, 2000, in a Wichita Fails hospital after a lengthy illness. Viewing will be from 8 a.m. Monday until 9 p.m. Tuesday at Sullivan Funeral Home. Morrow was born May 28, 1942, in Grandfield, Okla., a daughter of Brad Morton and the late Mable Eaton Morton. She married M.L Morrow on May 4, 1980, in Vernon. A graduate of Grandfield High School, she had been a resident of Vernon since 1963 and was a PBX operator at the Vernon campus of North Texas State Hospital. Surviving are her husband; five sons, Larry Morrow of Burkburnett, Gary Morrow of Quanah,, Randy Morrow of Georgetown, Texas, and Steve Morrow and Mike Marrow both of Vernon; her father, of Grandfield; two sisters, Betty Croft of Belen, N.M., and Joyce Ross of Duncan, Okla.; two brothers, Jimmy Morton of Belen, N.M., and Don Morton of Oklahoma City; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Her mother preceded her in death on April 19, 1997. _____________________________________________________________ Bessie M. Matthews Bessie M. Matthews, 85, of Hereford, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, in Hereford Care Center. She was a sister of Erma Templeton of Quanah. Funeral services were held Monday in Rix Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at a later date in Rest Lawn Cemetery. Matthews was born Nov. 21, 1914 in Sulphur Springs and married Henry Matthews on Dec. 22, 1947, in Paducah. He preceded her in death on Oct. 12, 1998. She was a retired postal employee and a member of Trinity Baptist Church. Surviving are Milton Lee (Sonny) Matthews of Hereford and another sister, Cannie Stevens of Comanche. _____________________________________________________________ Bill C. Edwards Funeral services were held Monday in Sullivan Funeral Home Chapel for former Vernon resident Bill C. Edwards, 73, of Kingsland who died Friday, June 30, 2000, in an Austin hospital after a brief illness. Interment was in Wilbarger Memorial Park Edwards was born Sept. 9, 1926 in Paducah, a son of the late Claus and Maybelle Brownlow Edwards. He married Helen Stubeda on Sept. 5, 1953, at Philadelphia Penn. And she preceded him in death on April 16, 1991. He later married Rhea Kelso Woodall on Feb. 14, 1998, at Austin. A U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, where he served in the Pacific, he moved to Vernon from Wichita Falls in 1969. He moved to Kingsland in 1999. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Debra Frost of Austin and Sharon Maranich of Grapevine; a son, James Edwards of Austin and seven grandchildren. TX - Obits from the Vernon Daily Record 7-5-2000 Ed Tennell Ed Tennell, 95, a longtime resident of Harrold, died Monday, July 3,2000, in an Electra hospital after a lengthy illness. Graveside funeral services will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Eastview Cemetery with Roe Hallmark officiating. Arrangements are under direction of Sullivan Funeral Home. Tennell was born Sept 8. 1904, in Allen, Okla., a son of the late John and Mattie Waters Tennell. He married Lucille Hallmark on Feb. 22, 1927, at Ada, Okla. A resident of Wilbarger County since 1929, he retired as owner and operator of Tennell Service Station in Harrold. He was a member of the Church of Christ. Surviving are his wife; two sons, Wayne Tennell of Electra and Alton Tennell of Fritch 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Don Tennell, and two daughters, Una Germany and Doris Spurlock. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 4 p.m. Wednesday until service time. _____________________________________________________________ Earl William King Earl William (Bill) King, 75, died Monday, July 3,2000, at his residence in Vernon. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Sullivan Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Greg Kennedy officiating. King was born July 18, 1921, in Kingola in Wilbarger County, a son of the late Earl John and Mary Emily Griffin King. He married Rebecca Jean Barnes on June 8, 1956 in Oklahoma City. A lifetime resident of Wilbarger County, he was a 13.5. Coast Guard veteran of World War II and a member of the First United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife; two sons; Charles King of Abilene and Mike Fitzgerald of Sunray and a granddaughter. Beebe, 41 of Sonora, died Monday, July 3, 2000, at his residence. Graveside funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Sonora Cemetery. Kerbow Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Beebe was born Oct. 30, 1958, in Vernon. He was a production foreman for Louis Dreyfus NaturalGas. She was a sister of Nancy Villarreal of Oklaunion. Graveside funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Davidson Cemetery with the Rev. Ron Newman officiating. Interment will be under direction of Frederick Funeral Home. Cobb was born Jan. 21, 1931, in Tishomingo, Okla., a daughter of George David and Velma Marie Bowerman Rushin. She married Billy Cobb on March 28, 1964, in Reno, Nev. A 50-year resident of Tillman County, she was a restaurant operator and a member of the Frederick Pentecostal Holiness Church. Also surviving are three sons, Jessie Blankenship of Kodiak, Alaska, Daniel Cobb and Curtis Cobb, both of Davidson; a daughter, Susan Mosco of Irving; two brothers, Archie Rushin of Ravia, Okla, and Billy Rushin of Frederick; another sister, Melva Miller of Wilburton, Oklt; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Hurt was born Oct. 11, 1924, in Quanah, and married Francis Vernon Hurt in 1942. A bookkeeper, she moved to Amarillo from Lubbock in 1991. Surviving are a daughter, Cynthia Norris of Amarillo; two sons, Mike of Amarillo and Stephen of Dallas; a sister, Doris Elston of Lubbock; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She married Robert Lee Guy on Jan. 16, 1954, in Lubbock. A retired school cafeteria worker, she was a member of Greater St. Luke Baptist church Surviving are her husband; two sons, Robert Scott of Dallas sad Kenneth Craig of Lubbock; a brother, John Jackson of Vernon; three sisters, Arnie M. Polk and Quoqueze Edmonson, both of Quanah, and Louise Slay of Albuquerque, N.M. Clara J. Burley Former Vernon resident Clara J. Burley, 63, of Amarillo, died Thursday, July 6,2000. Funeral services were held Monday in Greater Mount Olive Baptist Church with A. L. Gipson, superintendent, officiating. Interment was in Llano Cemetery under direction of Warford Walker Mortuary. Burley was born in Vernon and had lived in Amarillo for more than 40 years. He married Dorothy Mae Williams on June 23, 1946, in Lubbock. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was in the construction business in Lubbock and Guymon, where he moved in 1967. He was a member of Oslo Lutheran Church. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Melanie Butterfield; three sons, Melvin Jr. of Guymon, Steve of Waco and Malcolm of Texhoma two sisters, Alice Johnson and Ruth Lester, both of Lubbock; a brother, William Sanders of Strawn; eight grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Thomas was born Jan. 25, 1910, in Paris, Texas, a daughter of the late L.E. and Matte Bryan Mayes. She married Seagle Thomas on Aug.. 3, 1933, in Frederick, Okla., and he preceded her in death on Jan. 30, 1995. She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Interment will be under direction of Dutton Funeral Home of Iowa Park. Jacobi was born Dec. 28, 1905, in Apache, Okla., as Agnes Mary Roessler. She married Alphonse (Jake) Jacobi in Electra, and he preceded her in death in 1966. A resident of Iowa Park for six months when she moved from Vernon, she was a member of Holy Family of Nazareth Catholic Church of Vernon and the churchs Altar Society. Surviving are a son, Jake Jacobi of Iowa Park; two sisters, Minnie Flusche of Austin and Justine Decaner of San Antonio; three grandsons and six great-grandchildren. Laudermilk was born Sept 18, 1934, in Marlow, Okla., a son of the late Tom and Mary Adkins Laudermilk. He married Betty Lou Murphy on Jan. 27, 1957, in Wichita Falls. A resident of Sun City for 16 years, he was a mailer for the Arizona Republic and Gazette and a member of the Oakmont Mens Club. Clinton Young, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Kirkland Cemetery under direction of Price-Jackson Funeral Home. Leonard was born July 26, 1915, in Cunningham, Texas, a daughter of the late John Storms and Sara Lillie Lollis Mahan. She married Lawrence Alliston Leonard Nov. 5 1932, in Hollis Okla. and he preceded her in death on June 5, 1977. A homemaker, she lived in the Kirkland area until World War II, then later moved to Pampa, Weatherford and Wichita Falls. She was a member of Harmony Baptist Church in Weatherford, where she was active in her Sunday school class. She was also a member of the Rio Brazos Ladies Club. Surviving are a son, Larry Leonard of Rowlett; a daughter, Raydene Denman of Wichita Falls; a sister, Cordelia Poole of Quanah; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He married Evelyn Haney on July 14, 1994, in Vernon. A lifelong Vernon resident, he was a former employee of the City of Vernon and a member of the Wilbarger Street Church of Christ. Surviving are his wife; a brother, Perry Pinner of Vernon; and two sisters, Dessie Bachman of Vernon and Carolyn Belcher of Amarillo. He was preceded in death by a brother, Clois Pinner, on July 5, 1998. Turney was born Oct. 21, 1948, in Quanah, and married Marilyn Bates on Dec. 31, 1972, in Weatherford, Texas. An oil field worker for 10 years in Texas, he moved to Cement in 1953 and operated a Citgo service station there for 30 years until his retirement in 1990. Interment will be in Crestview Memorial Park under direction of Hampton-Vaughn Crestview Funeral Home. Brookshire was born Feb. 8, 1931, in Henderson, a son of the late Houston and Leila Brookshire. He married Joy Camille Staley on May 16, 1952, in Vernon. A 1948 graduate of Lufkin High School, where he played basketball on the team that was runner-up for the state championship, he attended Texas Christian University on a basketball scholarship and in his freshman year played on the team that had the second undefeated season in the schools history: He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955, and was recalled to active duty during the Cuban missile crisis in 1962. Brookshire began his career as a grocer at the age of nine in the family business, Brookshire Brothers. He was associated with Willis Blackwell Grocery and Worth Food Markets in Fort Worth, then managed Brookshire Brothers in Livingston from 1955 to 1957. He later managed United Supermarket stores in Vernon and Quanah and opened the first United store in Wichita Falls in 1963. After owning several neighborhood grocery stores in Wichita Falls, he established Brookshire Wholesale Grocery, which he operated until his retirement in 1993. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Wichita Falls and a former member of Rotary Clubs in Livingston and Vernon. He enjoyed hunting, traveling and yard work. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Nancy Holcomb of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two sons, David Brookshire of Wichita Falls and Dr. Glen Brookshire of Fenton, Mich.; five grandchildren, two nephews; a niece and several cousins. A 1937 graduate of Chattanooga High School, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1941 in served with the 31st Fighter Group during World War II, participating in invasions of North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He was a retired farmer and rancher and had also retired after 13 years as a civil service employee in the post engineers office at Fort Sill. He was a Baptist, a member of the American Hereford Association and a former member of the Chattanooga school board.
