TX - Obits from the Vernon Daily Record 6-1-2000 Martha Rigsbay Martha Rigsbay, 78, of Weatherford, Texas, died Saturday, May 6, 2000. at her residence. She was the mother of Geneva Morris of Vernon. Graveside funeral services were held Tuesday, May 9, in Weatherford. Rigsbay was born Aug.6, 1921,a daughter of the late Thomas Huges Carroll and Martha Carldonia Branchfield. She grew up in Paris, Texas, and had lived in Weatherford for the past 20 years. She was a homemaker. Also surviving are a son, Jim Hill of Nocona; a half-sister, Jane Higgins of Paris; a half brother, Charlie Higgins of Covington; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Hill, and four brothers, Tom Carroll, Bob Carroll, Lewis Carroll and George Carroll. _____________________________________________________________ Lillie Anne Kubicek Lillie Anne Kubicek, 75, died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at her residence in Foard County after a brief illness. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Vernon with the Rev. Oren Key officiating. Interment will be in Eastview Cemetery under direction of Sullivan Funeral Home. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel. Kubicek was born July 3, 1924, in Vernon, a daughter of the late Edward and Mary Kaluza. She married Robert Kubicek on Aug. 8, 1945, in Vernon. A graduate of Vernon High School, she attended cosmetology school in Dallas. She was a homemaker and a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, KJT and the Womens Auxiliary. Surviving are her husband; two daughters, Linda McVey of Euless and Janet Daniel of Fort Worth; a son, Edward Kubicek of Vernon; a sister, Mary Cole of Cedar Hill, Texas; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Graveside funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Eastview Cemetery with the Rev. John Tabor of Fort Worth officiating. Interment will be under direction of Sullivan Funeral Home. Blair was born Sept. 19, 1910, in Vernon, a daughter of the late John Ernest and Mary Fletcher Greene. She married Lester Blair on Aug. 12,1932, in Frederick, Okla., and he preceded her in death on Aug. 15, 1986. A resident of Vernon most of her life, she moved to Amarillo in 1989. She was a homemaker and a member of Central Christian Church in Vernon. Surviving are a daughter, Janice Roberson Collins of Canyon; a son, Duane Blair of Fort Worth; three sisters, Marselley Hunt Austin of Amarillo and Norma Greene and Wynell Greene, both of Kansas City, Kan.; five grandchildren and 13:great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Greene; a sister, Thelma Phillips; and a granddaughter, Laurie Ochoa, in 1999. Graveside funeral services were held at 11 am. Friday at Bell Cemetery in Odell. Local arrangements were under direction of Sullivan Funeral Home. Mitchell was born June 27, 1914, in Odell, a daughter of the late Andrew and Nona Holloway Flowers. She married Haskell D. Mitchell, a former gospel singer with the Stamps Quartet and Stamps Baxter Quartet A resident of Irving for 40 years, she was employed by Sangers Department Store in 1951, and retired in the early 1970s, when the store was known as Sanger Harris. She was a member of Odell Baptist Church. Surviving are a son, Dwight Mitchell of Irving; a daughter, Patricia Aguilar of Irving; a brother, Jack Flowers of Wichita Falls; three granddaughters and three great-grandsons. Leslie Thomas of Crowell will officiate. Interment will be in Crowell Cemetery. Riethmayer was born Nov. 20, 1 1910, in Giddings. She married George Riethmayer on Dec. 1, 1928,in Quanah, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 23, 1992. A longtime resident of Crowell, she attended the First United Methodist Church and was a member of the Thursday 42 Club, West-side Home Demonstration Club and the Margaret PTA. TX - Obits from the Vernon Daily Record 6-4-2000 Leland Phillips ABERNATHY, Texas (Spl) - Former Wilbarger County resident Leland Phillips, 86, died Friday, June 2, 2000, in a Lubbock hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Abernathy First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Teeters, pastor of Lamesa First Baptist Church, the Rev. Mike Wilcox, pastor, and the Rev. Gene Hawkins, interim pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Clovis, N.M., officiating. Interment will be in Abernathy Cemetery under direction of Abell Funeral Home. Phillips was born Jan. 15, 1914, in Peaster, Texas, the son of the late Grover and Louesia Phillips. He graduated from Odell High School in 1931 and married Annie Thomas on Nov. 19, 1932, in Odell. He was a farmer in the Odell Community and was employed at the Odell Co-Op Gin and the Vernon Co-Op Gin before moving to Abernathy in 1951 to become manager of the Abernathy Co-Op Gin, a position he held until his retirement in 1989. He was active in the cooperative associations, serving on the Board and Executive Committee of the Farmers Cooperative Compress in Lubbock. He also served on the boards of the Plains Co-Op Oil Mill and the Plains Cotton Cooperative Association. He served as president of the Texas Cooperative Ginners Association, president of the Plains Ginners Cooperative Association, and on the board of the Texas Ginners Association. He was honored as Texas Ginner of the. Year in 1963 and Cooperator of the Year in 1977. He was active in community affairs and served as a deacon, trustee, teacher and usher with the Abernathy First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death a brother, Ordis Phillips. Survivors include his wife; a son, Jerry A. Phillips of Lubbock; and two nephews. Memorials may be made to the West Texas Rehabilitation Center or the Hardin-Simmons Academic Foundation. _____________________________________________________________ Margaret Hazel Johnston Barnett Margaret Hazel Johnston Barnett, age 91, longtime Vernon resident, died Thursday, June 1, 2000, in Amarillo following a brief illness. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Sullivan Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Robert Prince of First Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be in Wilbarger Memorial Park in Vernon. Barnett was born in OBrien, Texas, a daughter of the late W. D. and Melissa Josephine Barnard Johnston. She married Bacyl W. Barnett in February 1926 in Knox City. They moved to Vernon in 1945. He preceded her in death in 1957. She taught piano in Vernon for many years and was a member of the Vernon Musicians Club. She was a member of First Baptist Church and played piano for various Sunday school departments for a number of years. Survivors include three daughters, Jo Helen Stanfield of Eaton Rouge, La., Marjorie Logsdon of Amarillo and Jane Barton of Athens, Texas; a sister, Edna Lee Hove of Altus, Okla.; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 10 brothers, one sister and by a grandson, Michael Logsdon, in 1977. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m., Sunday, June 4, at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 6, in Pomona. Tyson was born Sept 14, 1941, at Bremond, Texas, a daughter of Minneola Carter and the late Corey Carter Sr. She attended Booker T. Washington School in Vernon and moved to Los Angeles, Calif., in 1957. A former member of New Hope Baptist Church in Vernon, she worked in Germany as an airline representative. Surviving are a daughter, Gwen Hicks of West Covina, Cal.; a son, Rodney Tyson of Pomona; her mother, of Pomona; a brother, John Carter of Pomona; seven sisters, Thorothy Donnell of Compton, Calif., Vera Raleigh of Los Angeles, Paula Lee, Opal Lee, Betty Banks and Rebecca Harvey, all of Pomona, and Hazel Wilson of Vernon; three grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Malcolm Neyland officiating, Interment will be in Terrace Cemetery under direction of Hudman Funeral Home. Perez was born May 2, l924, in Bastrop. She was a housewife and a Catholic. Surviving are five daughters, Mary Collazo of Garden City, Kan., Geneva Flores of Jal, N.M., Rosario Gomez of Quanah, Julia Barbosa of Mount Pleasant and Angelita Trejo of Carrolton, a son, Ricky Fuentes of Jacksonville; a brother, Juan Perez of Post; three sisters, Maria Santos Perez, Ramona Gonzales and Angelita Rosas, all of Post; 35 grandchildren and 56 great-grandchildren. Sy, 73, of Fort Smith, Ark., died Friday, May 19, 2000, in Fort Smith. He was the husband of former Wilbarger County resident Dorothy Haseloff Sy. Funeral services were held Monday, May 22, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Fort Smith. Interment was in the U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith under direction of Edwards Funeral Home. Sy was born Feb.26,1927, in Dallas. He married Dorothy Haseloff on April 15, 1951, in Vernon A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, be served on the USS Bland and USS Blue Ridge. He was employed for 41 years as an elevator mechanic with the Otis Company before retiring. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, where he served as treasurer, and was a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and the Arkansas Volunteer Income Tax Assistant Program. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Paula Sands of Tucson, Ariz.; two sons, Mark Sy of Kingwood, Texas, and Andrew Sy of Montpelier, Vt.; two sisters, Pauline Steyer and Katherine Boone, both of Dallas; and two grandchildren. _____________________________________________________________ Joy Bearden Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 9, at Sullivan Funeral Home Chapel for former Vernon resident Joy Bearden, 65 who died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at her home in Oklahoma City. Bearden was born April 10, 1935, in Eldorado, Okla., a daughter of Vera Putman Fennell and the late Troy Fennell Sr. She married Bob Bearden on Feb. 8, 1975, in Vernon, and moved to Oklahoma City that same year. A member of Faith United Methodist Church of Vernon, she was an artist and floral arranger and enjoyed music. Surviving are her husband; a son, Steven Morrisett of Oklahoma City; her mother, of Iowa Park; three brothers, Jack Fennell of Amarillo, Burless Fennell of Phoenix, Ore., and Don Fennell of Oklaunion; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Wiederanders, 92, died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, in Fort Worth. Funeral services were held Erli day, June 2, at University Lutheran Church in Norman, Okla. Interment was in Resthaven Cemetery at Moore, Okla. Wiederanders was born Jan. 28, 1908, near Vernon, a son of the late John and Helen Zschech Wiederandert lie married Ruth Petering on Jan. 25,1939, and she preceded him in death in October of 1987. A 1938 graduate of the University of Oklahoma, he taught school for several years, then joined the Aid Association for Lutherans Life Insurance Company in 1945 as an agent serving the northern part of Texas. He was district representative for A.A.L. in Vernon from 1945 to 1954, and a general agent here from 1954 to1960. He retired as an A.A.L. general agent in Norman, Okla., in 1970, and later moved to Fort Worth to be nearer to his family. Surviving are a daughter, Ruth Reko of Chicago; a son, George Wiederanders of Fort Worth; six grandchildren and one great-grandson. Graveside funeral services were held Thursday at Eastview Cemetery. Eastgate Funeral Home of Garland was in charge of arrangements. Pearson was born June 6, 1906, in Wichita Falls, a daughter of Kyle and Margaret Hancock. She married David Pearson, who preceded her in death in 1999. A resident of Vernon for most of her life, she moved to Garland, about 10 years ago. She was a homemaker and a member of the Christian Church; A nephew, David Miller of Garland, is her only survivor. _____________________________________________________________ Wood Whatley Former Hardeman County resident Wood Whatley, 99, of Fritch, died Thursday, June 8, 2000, in Borger. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Price-Jackson Funeral Home Chapel with Deacon Mary Dean WhitField of the Episcopal Church ifficiating. Interment will be in Goodlett Cemetery. Whatley was born Jan. 20,1901, in Anson, a son of the late Charlie Marion and Martha Hassell Whatley. He attended Friendship and Goodlett schools and married Grace Zelma Downs on July 12, 1924, in the Friendship community. She preceded him in death on Dec. 18, 1985. A county employee for 20 years, he later ranched in Colorado for 30 years. He was a Baptist. Surviving are four sons, Del Whatley of San Angelo, Lester Ray Whatley of Tecumseh, Kan., Jim Whatley of Fritch and Tony Whatleyqf Fullerton, Calif..; five daughters, Billie Nell Hines of Quanah, Bobbie Martin of Midland, LaRuth Patterson of flower Mound and Judy Rosser of Amarillo; 27 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. Hobson was born Sept 6, 1911, in Elbert, Texas, a daughter of the late William H. and Ada Rogers Robinson. She married Ennis H. Hobson on April 12, 1933, in Davidson, Okla., and he preceded her in death in 1979. A retired schoolteacher, she lived in Oklaunion and Dumas before moving to Seattle in 1979. Surviving are a son, Bill Hobson of Seattle; a sister, Opal Phillips of Quanah; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was a sister of Lula Duke of Vernon. Funeral services were held Thursday in the Burkhardt Chapel at Frederick Memorial Cemetery. Interment was under direction of Jackson Funeral Home. Fowler was born May 26,1916, at Milo, Okla., a daughter of the late W.L. and Gertrude Hayes Karr. She attended school in Milo and married Charlie W. Fowler on Jan. 21, 1934, in Frederick. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Also surviving are her husband; two daughters, Charlett Ripley of Frederick, and Charlene Gary of Bonham; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Smith was born May 30, 1917, in Motley County She married James A Smith on June 26, 1937, in Dickens. He preceded her in death in 1983. A resident of Matador for some 30 years, she was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church of Vernon with the Rev. Derrell Patterson, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Eastview Cemetery under direction of Rix Funeral Directors of Lubbock. Carpenter was born Dec. 19, 1917, in Ennis, a daughter of the late B.F. and Alma Owens. The family moved to Vernon from Fort Worth, and she graduated from Vernon High School. She attended North Texas State University and assisted her mother in the operation of Owens Flower Shop prior to her marriage to AJ. Carpenter Jr. on July 12, 1940, in Vernon. They moved to Lubbock in 1948. She was a homemaker, a member of the First United Methodist Church and a charter member of Hillcrest Country Club, and served as secretary of the Hillcrest Womens Golf Association. Surviving are her husband; a sister, Martha Jane Lindsey of North Richland Hills; a brother, James Owens of San Angelo; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Clyde M. Owens and Olen. Owens, and a sister, Oleta Gordon. She married Gibbs Thomas Brown in 1932 in Wichita Falls and he preceded her in death on May 29,1993. A retired sales associate for Paulines Dress Shop in Graham, she was a memberof the Order of Eastern Star and a member and organist for the First Christian Church in Graham. Sherman was born May 7, 1914, in Chillicothe, a daughter of the late Ben and Maude Hassler Word, pioneer residents of Wilbarger County. She married Marvin Richard Sherman on Dec 18, 1939, in Chillicothe, and he preceded her in death on May 19, 1987. A homemaker, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she taught childrens Sunday school classes. She 2 was an adult leader for the Jackson Springs 4-H Club and a member of the Chillicothe Iris Club and Vernon Garden Club. Cameron, 87, of Frederick, Okla., died Friday, June 9,2000, in a Frederick nursing borne after a lengthy illness. He was a brother of Rubye Robinson of Vernon. Interment will be in Frederick Memorial Cemetery under direction of Jackson Funeral Home. Cameron was born Decxt7, 1912, in White Flat, Okla., a son of the late Robert aw4 Eva Johnson Cameron. He graduated from Altus High School in 1931 and married Juanita McKinnell on Oct. 22, 1933, in Mangum, Okla. They moved to Frederick in 1934. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he was stationed at the Naval Training Center in San Diego, Calif. He owned and operated Cameron Insurance Agency in Frederick for many years. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Frederick, where he served as an elder, deacon and treasurer, and was also a member of the Frederick lions Club and Frederick Golf and Country Club. He served as treasurer of the Burkhardt Memorial Trust, which oversees the chapel at Frederick Memorial Cemetery. Also surviving are his wife; a son, Stephen Cameron of Fort Collins Colo..; a daughter, Debra Zaderaka of Wheaton, Ill.; another sister, Margie Johns of Dallas; four grand children and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, C.W. Cameron, Troy Cameron and Earl Cameron and a sister, Ella Mae Crawford. Army during World War II and was a member of the American Legion. He was a landowner and member of the First Baptist Church and the J. Carl Smith Sunday School Class. Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Karan Collins and Debra Kay Hernandez, both of Dallas, and Dianne Phillips of Granbury; a brother, A. T. She moved with her family to Wilbarger County as a child and married P.C. (Bud) Jouett on Nov. 16, 1935 in Vernon. He preceded her in death July 26, 1993. An employee of Vernon Manufacturing Company for 29 years, she was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school and led the childrens choir for more than 30 years. She was also a member of LWML and was chairman of the Prayer Chain. Surviving are two sons, Donald Jouett of Altus, Okla., and Richard Jouett of Vernon; two daughters, Doris Gibbs and Pat Schur, both of Vernon; a brother; George Lutz of Amarillo; two sisters, Dorlene Barnett of Chillicothe and Louise Frank of Vernon; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a retired auto mechanic, Mrs. Byers was born July 12, 1919, in Seymour. They married on Oct. 2, 1958, in Vernon, and moved to Dalhart in 1963. They are jointly survived by two sons, Sammy Byers of Fort Worth and Raymond Byers of Greenville; two daughters, Sue Streit of Vernon and Jannell Davis of Amarillo; 20 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Two brothers, Arbie Wooten and Frank Wooten, both of El Cajon, also survive Mrs. Byers, Calif. Mr. Byers is survived by three sisters, Mary Green of Seagraves and Betty Wall and Martha Boyd, both of Vernon. They were preceded in death by two daughters, Glenda Dickerson in 1977 and Robbie Chism in 1990. Darrell Teeter officiating. Internment will be in Restland Cemetery. Anderson was born Sept. 21, 1917, in Odell, a son of the late Luther and Mable Anderson. He was a staff sergeant during World War II and served in Italy, where he received a Purple Heart A retired farmer and rancher, he was a member of the First Baptist Church of Odell. He enjoyed horses and farming. Surviving are his wife, Arletta; two sons, Andy Anderson and Fred Dan Anderson, both of Nashville; a daughter, Sharon Faster of Houston; three grandchildren, a great-granddaughter and four nieces.
