TX - Obits from the Vernon Daily Record 5-1-2000 Claudia Juanita Murphy QUANAN (Spl) Claudia Juanita Murphy, 78, of Quanah, died Sunday, April 30, 2000, in a Wichita Falls hospital. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Price-Jackson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Spangler, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Goodlett Cemetery. Murphy was born Nov. 9,1921, in Frederick, Okla., a daughter of the late Ross and Edith Stowers LaFever. She married Alvin Lee Mayfield and he preceded her in death on April 8, 1969. She later married Edward Murphy on Jan.6, 1973, and he died on Jan. 1 1995. A lifetime resident of Hardeman County, she was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist church. Surviving are two sons, Ron Mayfield of McKinney and Danny Mayfield of Goodlett, a daughter, Jeanne Thompson of Weatherford, Texas; a sister, Jo Tollison of Borger; seven grandchildren and six great-grand-children. Graveside funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Eastview Cemetery with the Rev. John Klappenbach officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Sullivan Funeral Home. Kester was born June 20, 1912 in Odell a son of the late C. M. and Lou Starr Kester Jr. He married Lois Carlton on Oct. 23, 1930 in Altus Okla., and she preceded him in death on July 31, 1992 A lifetime resident of Wilbarger County, he was a farmer and rancher and served for 10 years as manager of the W. T. Waggoner Estate dehydrating plant at Odell. He was a member of the Odell and Chillicothe school boards for 30 years and an adult 4-H leader for more than 40 years. He was also a member of the American Quarter Horse Association. Surviving are a daughter, Beth Collins of Vernon; two sons, Max Kester of Vernon and Regie Kester of Ardmore Okla.; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. TX - Obits from the Vernon Daily Record 5-4-2000 Rhonda Kay Bailey Rhonda Kay Bailey, 36, died Wednesday, May 3,2000, at her residence after a brief illness. Graveside funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Friday at Chillicothe Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Sullivan Funeral Home. Bailey was born April 14, 1964 in Riverside, Calif., a daughter of Royce Bailey and Janice Shipley. She moved to Vernon in 1987. Surviving are her husband, Brian Clary, three sons, Aric Bailey Cody Ba1iey and Justin Bailey all of Vernon; her father, of Gainesville; her mother, of Vernon; her stepfather, Mike Fox of Vernon two brothers, Grant Bailey of Vernon and Greg Bailey of Quanah; a grandmother, Nona Bailey of Chillicothe; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Jeff Bailey, in 1966. Pallbearers will be Kevin Cline, Jerry Cantrell, Bo Williamson, Richard Schoppa, Brian Schoppa, Michael Bailey and Joe Matthews. Tracer, 47, of Vernon, died Monday, May 2, 2000, at his home. Funeral services will be Saturday in at Mitchell Funeral Home in Paragould, Ark. Tracer was born in Caraway, Ark. He served in the Army National Guard and the Air Force for 15 years and moved to Vernon from Wichita Falls. He was an employee of the Brantly Helicopter plant in Vernon from December of 1997 until October of 1999. Surviving are a sister, Pamela Garner, his mother, Joyce Tedder; a daughter, Rebecca Raymond; a son, Charles William Tracer Jr.; three granddaughters, including twins, and twin grandsons. _____________________________________________________________ Calvin A. Owen QUANAH (Spl) Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Price-Jackson Funeral Home for Calvin A. Owen, 88, of Quanah who died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, in a Quanah hospital. The Rev, Larry Reed-Farris, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, and Jack Westbrook, minister of the Church of Christ, will officiate. Interment will be in Goodlett Cemetery. Owen was born Jane 27,1911, in Belton, a son of the late Milton and Mary Miller Owen. He married Nila Richardson on Dec. 31,1938, in Hollis, Okla. A longtime resident of Childress, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and retired from Lone Star Gas In 1974 after 35 years of service. He has lived in Quanah for four years. He was a Member of the Church of Christ and a former member of the Childress Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and a volunteer fireman. Surviving are his wife; a son, Joe Owen of Hewett, two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Malon, S.M., Willie, Dink and Otto Owen, and a sister, Mildred Lictle. Memorials may be made to the Goodlett Cemetery. Wilbarger Co. TX - Obits from the Vernon Daily Record 5-5-2000 Della Mae Cook CROWELL (Spl.) - Della Mae Cook, 95, died Thursday, May 4, 2000, in a Seymour hospital after a lengthy illness. Graveside funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Crowell Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Womack-Manard Funeral Home. Cook was born Oct. 17, 1904, in Beckley, W.Va., a daughter of the late Randolph and Eliza Jane Harvey Flint. She married Stanton B. Lilly in 1919 in West Virginia, and he died in 1948. She married Jesse Ferguson in 1952 in Arizona, and he also preceded her in death. She later married Clarence Cook. She was a homemaker and attended the Crowell Church of Christ Surviving are her husband; two daughters, Janie Brown of Vernon and Elizabeth Jane Lilly of Quanah two sons, Steven Lilly of Phoenix, Ariz., and Michael Lilly of Houston; a brother, Robed Flint of Mississippi; 32 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by three daughters and five sons. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Womack-Manard Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev, Donnie Miller officiating. Interment will be in Crowell Cemetery. Chandler was born March 8, 1924, in Lingleville, Texas, a son of the late Dewain Calvin and Viola Ellen Turpin Chandler. He married Sibyl Fay Beauchamp on Feb. 21, 1946, in Yuma, Ariz. Reared in Rhineland, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and moved to San Diego County, California, in 1946. He later moved to Crowell in 1989 and worked as a cowboy on several area ranches. He was active in amateur rodeos in calf roping and team roping. Surviving are his wife; a daughter Betty Chandler Fitzgibbons of Beauford, S.C.; a son, Ray Del Chandler of San Diego; two sisters, Rosalie McGreger of Crowell and Sue Muse of Escondido, Calif., three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Kelley Jerry W. Kelley, 62, of Wichita Falls, died Sunday, May 7, 2000. He was a son of Ethel Kelley of Vernon. Kelley was born Oct. 26, 1937, in Perryton. He was a retired butcher for Safeway Grocery. Also surviving are his wife, Claudia; two daughters, Nancy Donaldson and Belinda Brincefield, both of Wichita Falls; two Sons, Cody Phillips of Arlington and B.J. Phillips of Wichita Falls; a brother, Richard Kelley of Broken Bow, Okla; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, John W. Carpenter was born Sept. 7, 1942 in Chilliicothe, a daughter of Margaret Kiippa Wolsch and tbe late Buford Wolsch. She married John Carpenter on March 27, 1981, in Vernon, and he preceded her in death on April 19, 1981. A former employee of Vernon State Hospital, she was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and was secretary-treasurer of the Wilbarger Active Senior Citizens Association. Surviving are a daughter, Vickie Wattenbarger of Altus, Okla.; her mother, of Vernon; two brothers, Don Wolsch and Dennis Wolsch, both of Vernon; a sister, Beverly Hennesee of Killeen; and three grand children. TX - Obits from the Vernon Daily Record 5-9-2000 Minnie Morgan Halbert Minnie Morgan Halbert, 102, died Monday, May 8, 2000, in a local hospital after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Derrell Patterson, pastor, officiating. Interment be at 11 am. Friday at Carlsbad Cemetery in Carlsbad, N.M. Arrangements are under direction of Sullivan Funeral Home. Halbert was born June 19, 1897, a daughter of the late David and Quinnie Middlebrook Ferebee. She married A. A. Halbert on Dec. 20, 1944, in Carlsbad, N.M. and he preceded her in death on Dec. 30,1970. A graduate of Clarendon High School and Clarendon College she received a teaching certificate from Denton College for Women and taught school at Quail, Halley and Claude. She later worked as a bookkeeper for a lumber company in Vernon, then for the Coca Cola Bottling Company. She moved to Roswell, N.M., in 1942, where she worked for Harris Grocery and Harris Dentist. She returned to Vernon after retiring in 1978. Halbert was recognized in 1998 as the oldest living graduate of Clarendon College and was honored as queen of the colleges annual celebration. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years, and was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Business and Professional Womens Club and a 25-year member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Surviving are a sister, Lydia Belle Wilkinson of Vernon, and a number of nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. McWilliams, 83, died Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at his residence. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Sullivan Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Gilliland, pastor of Second Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Wilbarger Memorial Park. McWilliams was born Feb. 24, 1917, a son of the late Sam R and Donie Davis McWilliams. He married Doris Burnett in 1939 in Murchison. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he had lived in Vernon since 1946. He was a machinist at Buds Automotive Shop. Surviving are his wife; two sons, John McWilliams of Garland and Gary McWilliams of Vernon; a daughter, Nettie Jo Phillips of Garland; a sister, Ruby McWilliams of Vernon; five grandchildren and sjx great-grandchildren. Fritze, 91 of Grandfield, Okla., died Sunday, May 7, 2000, in Grandfield. He was the father of former Vernon resident Jim Fritze, now of Bixby, Okia. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church of Grandfield with Dr. Bob Burch, pastor, and Dr. James Giles of Fort Worth officiating. Interment will be in Grandfield Memorial Cemetery under direclion of Gray Funeral Home. Fritze was born Dec. 12, 1908, at Shamrock, Texas, a son of the late George W. and Sally A. Polk Fritze. He married Lillian Cottrell in 1932 in Grandfield. A long-time Grandfield resident and a 1928 graduate of Grandfield High School, he was a farmer and a part-time employee of various agriculture programs. He was a former member and deacon of Pleasant Mound Baptist Church and a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Grandfield. Surviving are his wife; two other sons, Torn Fritze of Sand Springs, Okla., and Richard Fritze of Grandfield; a sister, Juanita Wilt of Grandfield; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Leon Fritze. Arrangements are under direction. of Price-Jackson Funeral Home. Mitchell was born July 21, 1901 in Navarro County Texas, a daughter of the late W.C. and Ellen Conant. She married Alexander Mitchell Sr. in March of 1924 in Goodlett He. Preceded her in death on Dec. 28, 1949. A Hardeman County resident all her life, she graduated from Goodlett High School She was a homemaker and a member of Goodlett Baptist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Dorothy Nell Watson of Quanah, two grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was also preceded death by a son, William Alexander Mitchell Jr., on Nov. 23,1985. Interment will be in Quanah Memorial Park under direction of Price-Jackson Funeral Home. Wesson was born Jan. 23,1933, in Quanah, a daughter of the late B.E. and Z.O. White Logan. She married Dewey Wesson on Aug. 15, 1981, in Quanah. A lifetime resident of Quanah and Crowell, she was a former grocery store employee and a mental health worker at Vernon State Hospital. She and her husband previously owned and operated Quanah Builders Lumber Yard. She was a member of the North Groesbeck Church of Christ Surviving are her husband; two daughters, JoAnn Vecera of Crowell and Shana Parmer of Quanah; three brothers, Newt Logan of Lubbock, Tommy Logan of Paducah, Ky., and James Logan of Merkle; five sisters, Clara Leonard, Ione Fite, Frances Daugherty, Margie Prater and Peggy Brandon, all of Quanah and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Vernon with the Rev. Stanley Jones officiating. Interment will be in East View Cemetery under direction of Bella Vista Funeral Home and Crematory. Burns was born May 24, 1903, in Moulton, Texas, a son of the late-Herman and Mary Kretschmer Bruns. He was a pastor of the Lutheran Church and served churches. in Edna, Sparenburg, Lamesa, San Benito, Pampa, Schulenburg and Oswego. He retired to Beaumont and was active in the Redeemer Lutheran Church He moved to Bella Vista in 1994. He was a member of the Optimist Club. Survivors include a son, Donald Bruns of Arvada, Cob; two daughters, Beryle J. Schmidt of Beaumont and Dorothy M. Jones of Bella Vista; seven grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Arrangements were under the direction of Blackburn-Shaw Memorial Chapel, Fifth and Pierce St. Bledsoe was born in Quanah and moved to Amarillo form Crowell in 1986. He previously lived in Dumas and Sunray. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served in the Philippines. He was a retired employee of Diamond Shamrock, a Methodist and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Wilkinson was born April 13,1938, in Burkburnett, a son of the late John and Essie Wilkinson. A retired general construction contractor and oil field worker, he was a Baptist. Surviving are three brothers, W. Y. Wilkinson and John Wilkinson, both of Vernon, and Roy Wilkinson of Keller; two sisters, Rose East of Dallas and Ann Lindsay of Fair Oaks, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. _____________________________________________________________ Opal Clark James Former Vernon resident Mrs. Opal Clark James, 94, died Saturday May 13, 2000 at her residence in Dallas. A memorial service will be held at Lunn's Funeral Home Chapel in Wichita Falls at 1 p.m. Thursday with Dr. Robert Jeffres, pastor of the First Baptist Church officiating. A graveside service will follow at 4 p.m. at Eastview Cemetery in Vernon with Dr. Robert Prince, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Vernon, officiating. Mrs. James was born June 21, 1905 in Leedy Ok. , a daughter of the late William Lee and Lillie Pountree Clark. She attended Southwest State Teachers' College in Oklahoma, then worked at a bank in Leedy before becoming a school teacher. She married Ewing S. James on September 1, 1925, in Leedy, where he was pastor of the First Baptist church. They moved to a pastorate in Liberal, Kansas for three years, then to Cisco, Texas, in 1930, for seven years. In 1937, Dr. James became pastor of the First Baptist Church of Vernon, a post he held until he became editor of the Baptist Standard in 1954, when the family moved to Dallas. Mrs. James was an active member of Royal Haven Baptist Church in Farmers Branch. Surviving are two daughters, Ramona Daniel of Wichita Falls and Shirley Young of Dallas; a son, Bill E. James of Decatur, Ala.,; a sister, Angela Bowman of Chula Vista, Calif.; seven grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1976 and a daughter Jo Ann, on April26, 1945. Shirley was born Dec. 20, 1920, in Crowell, and spent much of her childhood in Norman, Okla. She received a bachelors degree from the University of Oklahoma and a masters degree from New York University She served as an air traffic controller for the Federal Communication Administration in Denver, Colo., during World War II. She married Robert Ray Shirley on Dec. 25, 1946, in Crowell, and he preceded her in death on Sept.8, 1999. A life member of the Crowell Adelphian Club, Shirley was a member of the Santa Rosa and State Board of Texas Federation of Womens Clubs for more than a decade, and was listed in Whos Who Among American Women and Whos Who of the South and Southwest for eight years. She was active in Scouting and Camp Fire Girls. She was charter president of the Vernon branch of the American Association of Womens Clubs and enjoyed the Porcelain Art Club of Vernon. A member of the Southwest Oklahoma branch of American Penwomen, she served as a correspondent for the Wichita Falls Times-Record News for 21 years and The Vernon Daily Record for 20 years. She was a charter member of Grace Episcopal Church in Vernon and was later a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Quanah. Surviving are four daughters, Karen Higgins of Dallas, Kay Miller of Vernon, Kathy Perkins of Fort Worth and Kristi Self of Lakeland, Fla.; a son, Robert Ray Shirley Jr. of Atlanta, Texas; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Smithson was born Dec. 19.1936, in Vernon, a son of the late W.C. and Adelaide Smith He married Charon Scruggs in January of 1977 in 0klahoma, and she preceded him in death in August of 1999. He was in law enforcement for some 25 years, and was later a private investigator for a law firm in Wichita Falls. He was a U.S. Army veteran and received a degree in criminal justice from Midwestern State University. She married Ira Fellers on April 15, 1931, in Hollis, Okla., and he preceded her in death on Nov. 24, 1973. A teacher for many years at Williams High and Hooleyann schools, she attended East Texas State Teachers College in Commerce. She was also a nurse's aide for 28 years at Hardeman County Memorial Hospital. She lived in Vernon for 15 years, where she was a member of the Church of Christ and the Vernon Art League. For the past five years, she made her home in Paris, where she lived with a niece, Marie Love. Surviving are a brother, Alvie Winningham of Honey Grove; a sister, Olga Rollans of Vernon; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by an adopted son, Rodger Wayne Fellers, on Jan. 2, 1970. A longtime resident of Childress, where she moved from Hooks, she had lived in Quanah for the past four years.
