Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Wilbarger Street Church of Christ with Jay Hanley, minister, officiating. Interment will be in Eastview Cemetery. Cargile was born Oct. 31, 1916, in Crowell, a daughter of the late Samuel Benjamin and Nellie Ora Small Henderson. She married Paul Rich Cargile on April 1, 1936, in Quanah, and he preceded her in death on June 3, 1999. A resident of Vernon since 1919, she also lived for six years in Childress and one year in Electra. She was a homemaker and a member of the Wilbarger Street Church of Christ. Surviving are a daughter, Jolynn Southern of Frisco, Texas; two sons, Robert Paul Cargile of Fort Worth and Andrew Pearce Cargile of Abilene; a sister, Mary Putman of Spur; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Sue Cargile Pliler; a brother, Everett Henderson; and a sister, Ina Kays. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Published 11/5/00 Morley Vernon Adams Jr. WICHITA FALLS (Spl.) - Morley Vernon Adams Jr., 77, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, in Wichita Falls. He was the father of Monica Chapman of Vernon. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Eastview Cemetery with the Rev. Gary Chapman, pastor of Rock Crossing Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be under the direction of Lunns Colonial Funeral Home. Adams was born Dec. 26, 1922, in Bristow, Okla., a son of the late Morley and Hattie Adams. He married Margarete Schneider on March 30, 1957, in Bitburg, Germany. Adams served in the U.S. Air Force for 22 years, including tours in the South Pacific during World War II, and in Alaska, Germany, France and Libya. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with five bronze stars and the Philippine Liberation Medal with one bronze star. He retired from the Air Force as a Senior Master Sergeant in 1965. He worked for 13 years at Sheppards Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office before retiring in 1986. Survivors include his wife; four other children, Doris Mallonee and John Adams, both of Wichita Falls, Robbye C. Skoglund of Long Beach, Calif., and Morley V. Adams III of Rock Springs, Wyo.; a sister, Lola Coleman of Denver, Cob.; and three grandchildren. Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Roscoe William Shields Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church for Roscoe William Shields, 79, who died Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, in a local hospital. The Rev. Shields was born June 21, 1921, in Woodville, Okla., a son of the late John Herman and Frankie Mildred Jones Shields. He married Leola Gfeller on April 10, 1946, and she preceded him in death on June 6, 1996. He married Audrey Obenhaus on March 15, 1997. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served overseas for 32 months in North Africa, French Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Sicily, England, France, Belgium and Germany. He enjoyed working with honeybees and was a member of the Texas Bee Keepers Association. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Judy Nash of Vernon; a stepson, Dennis Obenhaus of Carrollton; a brother, Melvin Shields of Divine; two sisters, Eula Vay Williams of Keystone, Okla., and Johana Swims of Albuquerque, N.M.; two granddaughters and two step-grandchildren. A son, Dale Shields, and a sister, Nadine Baughaus, also preceded him in death. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be AJ. WaIler was born Dec. 19, 1921, in Rocky, Okla., a daughter of the late James Meeks and Ora Day Haley. She married Harvey Lee Burke in 1939, and he preceded her in death in 1953. She married A. F. Waller Jr. in 1972 and he preceded her in death in 1992. A graduate of Hobart, OkIa. High School and the Vernon Clinic Hospital LVN School, she was a nurse for Dr. AL. Borchardt, Dr. Joe Moore and Dr. Layne Collums for many years. She had been a resident of Vernon since 1939 and was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Order of Eastern Star. Surviving are two sons, Jim Burke of Vernon and Haley Burke of Canyon; a daughter, Anita Cochran of Merced, Calif.; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Dr. Milton Joe Moore Former Vernon resident Dr. Milton Joe Moore, 61, of Orange, Texas, died at Methodist Hospital in Houston. A memorial service was held Saturday at Slade Memorial Chapel of the First Methodist Church in Orange. Cremation was to follow. A native of Vernon, Moore was a graduate of Vernon High School and attended Southern Methodist University. He graduated from medical school at Tulane University in New Orleans and completed his internship at McLeod Infirmary in Florence, S.C. He served as a U.S. Army battle surgeon for the Second of the Twelfth First Air Calvary Division during the Vietnam War, and received two Bronze Stars. He had a family practice at Wilbarger General Hospital and continued his medical education in orthopedic training at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. He retired from his medical practice in Orange in 1993. Moore was a member of medical societies in Wilbarger County, Orange County and Tarrant County in Texas and Hopkins County in Kentucky. He was also a member of the American Academy of Family Practice and Kentucky Orthopedic Association, a Diplomat of the American Orthopedic Association, and was a former director of the Western Kentucky Crippled Childrens Division of the Kentucky Department of Human Resources. Surviving are his wife, Michelle Hooks Moore; three daughters, Sherrill Ortiz, Amy Moore and Sarah Moore; a ~son, Russ Moore; a stepson, James Stringer Jr.; his mother, Mrs. Mary Sue Moore; a sister, Mary Sue Moore; two brothers, Dr. R. Esther R. Gonzales Esther R. Gonzales, 75, of Los Alamos, Colo., died Friday, Nov. 3, 2000. She was the mother of John Gonzales Sr. of Vernon. She was born Sept. 10, 1924, Also surviving are seven daughters, six other sons and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Alene Martin Alene Martin, 83, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, in a local hospital after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Robert Prince, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Wilbarger Memorial Park under direction of Sullivan Funeral Home. Martin was born Feb. 18, 1917, in Wilbarger County, a daughter of the late Hayden and Omega Standlee Richie. She married Roy Martin Jr. on Sept. 28, 1940, at Lockett, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 27, 1984. A graduate of Vernon High School, she retired after 32 years with the ONeal and Balser jewelry stores here. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Rachel Sunday School Class. Surviving are two daughters, Mary Ann Conway of Lubbock and Judy Fortune of Vernon; two sisters, Maxine Leverett and Irene McLean, both of Vernon; two brothers, Roy Richie of Iselton, Calif, and Milton Richie of Vernon; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Duke Jr. R. A. Duke Jr., 76, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, in a Wichita Falls hospital after a lengthy illness. He married Betty Ferguson on Jan. 26, 1943, in Vernon. A graduate Vernon High School, he attended Texas Tech University and served as a flight instructor in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired as superintendent of mail at the Vernon Post Office. He was an avid golfer and a member of the First Baptist Church and the J. Carl Smith Sunday School Class. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Judy Pattison of Vernon; a brother, Clark Duke of Childress; and two grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Duke. Lehotsky Former Crowell resident Janet (Janette) R. Lehotsky, 71, of Houston, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000. A memorial service was held Monday at Westbury United Methodist Church in Houston. Arrangements were under direction of Earthman Funeral Home of Bellaire. Lehotsky was born Oct.31, 1929, in Crowell, a daughter of the late Henry C. and Grace Roark. She married Victor Lehotsky Jr. in Corpus Christi. A graduate of Crowell High School, where she was a cheerleader and participated in other school activities, she lived in Woodsboro and Corpus Christi from 1948 until 1967, when she moved to Houston. She was a substitute teacher, a member of Westbury United Methodist Church and the Voyagers Sunday School class, and was active in church work and other community organizations. Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Janel Gillespie; two sons, Robert Mark Gillespie and Walter D. Billy Dywayne Waggoner Former Vernon resident Billy Dywayne. Waggoner, 37, died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000, in a Chino, Calif., hospital after a lengthy illness. Waggoner was born June 5, 1963, in Vernon, a son of Houston Waggoner Sr. and Elois Johnson Waggoner. He moved from Vernon to California in 1989 and was a factory worker in Mission Viejo. He was a member of the Church of Christ. Surviving are his parents; two brothers, Ernest Waggoner of Colorado Sprints and Houston Waggoner Jr. of Vernon; a sister, Tanzy Waggoner of Lake Forest, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. His wife Ina preceded him in death in 1996. Marvin T. Keenan Marvin T. (Darty) Keenan, 81, of Sweetwater, died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, in a Sweetwater hospital. He was a brother of Irene Box of-Vernon and Mrs. Roy Davis of Quanah. Funeral services were held Thursday in McCoy Funeral Home Chapel of Memories in Sweetwater. Interment was in Garden of Memories. Keenan was born March 6, 1919, in Vernon, and was a longtime resident of Sweetwater. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he worked for U.S. Gypsum Company and was a member of the Church of Christ. Also surviving are his wife, Eva two sons, Marvin L. Keenan of Sweetwater and Harold Keenan of Hobbs, N.M.; a daughter Elizabeth Little of Sweetwater three other sisters, Mrs. Aggnus Welborn and Mrs. Alton Abston, both of Wichita Falls, and Clara Duncan of Sweetwater; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She married James Emory Tacker on May 13, 1945, in Vernon, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 15, 1983. Clois (Toby) Woodard Clois (Toby) Woodard, 78, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2000, in a local nursing home after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the First Baptist Church with Dr. Robert Prince, pastor, and Dr. Alfred Woodard of Graham officiating. Interment will be in Eastview Cemetery under direction of Sullivan Funeral Home. Woodard was born Oct. 24, 1921, in Wilbarger County, a son of the late Levi Benjamin and Candace Ammons Woodard. He married Neta Emmett on Jan. 25, 1942, in Fargo. A U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he served in North Africa and Italy and received 11 Battle Stars and two Presidential Citations. He retired in 1979 after 30 years as an instructor at Sheppard Air Force Base, then was manager of Wilbarger County Airport for 14 years. Surviving are his wife; three sons, Mike Woodard of Plano, Pat Woodard of Hereford and Danny Woodard of Arlington; two daughters, Trisha Kilgo and Kay White, both of Vernon; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Evelyn Ross Rhoads Evelyn Ross Rhoads was born in Odell, Texas on May 25, 1914 to J. Baxter Ross and Eva Hamilton Ross moving shortly thereafter with her Mother, Father, and Sister, Lena Tolbert to Vernon. She graduated from Vernon High School in 1932, and married Emory Rhoads, Jr. on September 6, 1936 at Vernon, Texas. The couple lived in Vernon until World War II, when Emory joined the Navy and she moved with him to San Diego, California for a period of time. Upon her husbands return from the military service, Evelyn and Emory moved to Oklaunion beginning a long tenure in the farming and cattle business, and were well known for their Australian Sheep Dogs and other enterprises. The Rhoads remained prominent members of the farming community until Emorys death in 1981, whenever Evelyn moved to Vernon residing here until 1998. She then moved to Dallas, Texas due to health problems and then her death on November 8, 2000. As a loyal member of the Central Christian Church for over a half century, Evelyn served on the board, devoting much time and service, especially to the Christian Womens Fellowship and various other phases of church activities. She was a member of the Yamparika Club, the hospital auxiliary, a charter member of the Museum Guild, the First President of the Altrusa Club, a Precinct Judge at practically every election held in Oklaunion and many more civic and cultural endeavors in Wilbarger County. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Emory, in 1981 and her sister, Lena on July 3, 2000. Mrs. Rhoads is survived by two nephews, Wayne (Reba) Showers of McAllen, and Jim (Jan) Showers of Hillsboro and Dallas; sister-in-law, Minerva Price-Hollar of Vernon; three nieces, Dianne Hollar Miller, Brenda Hollar Carter, Pam Hollar Ryan and their children; great nieces, Gay (Sam) Hargis of McAllen, Brenda (Chris) Buell of Dallas, Susanna (Palmer) Moldawer of Houston, and Elizabeth Showers of Dallas and their children. Evelyn is also survived by a number of other cousins and relatives of the pioneer Ross and Hamilton Families. The body will be in state at Sullivan Funeral Home on Friday and from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday. The family will be present from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, November 10, to greet Evelyns friends. Vaughn Former Vernon resident Mary E. Vaughn, 83, of McKinney, died Thursday, Nov. 9,2000, in a McKinney hospital. Funeral services were held Sunday at Waddill Street Baptist Church in McKinney with the Rev. Hubert Long officiating. Interment was in Restland Memorial Park in Dallas under direction of Belew Funeral Home. Vaughn was born Aug. 28, 1917, in Corsicana, a daughter of the late William Austin and Holly Elizabeth James Davidson. She came to Vernon with her family as a child, and moved from here in 1945. She married Arthur B. Vaughn on Feb. 3, 1946, and he preceded her in death. She was a charter member of Waddill Street Baptist Church in McKlnney. Surviving are two sons, Larry Craig Vaughn of Sulphur Springs and Arthur Paul Vaughn of Tyler; two daughters, Barbara Ann Posey of Austin and Karon Gidney of Blue Ridge; a sister, Inez Edwards of Vernon; seven grandchildren, three great-grandsons and several nieces and nephews. A son, Charles Vaughn; three brothers, Orville Davidson, Curtis Davidson and Truman Davidson; and a sister, Oma Davidson, also preceded her in death. Published 11/15/00 Juanita Baty Former Vernon resident Juanita Baty, 79, of Welch, died Monday, Nov. 13, 2000, in a Brownfield hospital. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the First Baptist Church of Welch. Interment was in Lamesa Memorial Park under direction of Branon Funeral Home of Lamesa. Baty was born Feb. 4, 1921, in Joplin, Mo., and moved to Dawson County from Vernon in 1928. She married Alvy Frank (Dock) Baty in 1938 in Lamesa. He preceded her in death on June 7, 1983. A member of the First Baptist Church of Welch, she worked for Dotty Dan Manufacturing for 10 years and was a cook for Dawson County schools for 17 years. Surviving are three sons, Bill of Early, Richard of Welch and James Doyle of Midland; a brother, Howard Jack Henley of Pearsall; a sister, Thelma Louise Houston of Bonham; eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. (Mac) McCelvey, 78, of Springdale, Ark., died Monday, Nov.13, 2000, in Fayetteville, Ark. Graveside funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in City of Levelland Cemetery with the Rev. Lance May officiating. Arrangements are under direction of George C. Price Funeral Directors of Levelland. McCelvey was born Oct. 15, 1922, in Vernon. He married Ann Witte in 1937, and she preceded him in death in 1969. He later married Polly West in 1972 in Clovis, N.M. A resident of Levelland during the1950s, he owned and operated McCelveys Fashion Fabrics and the Tiny Tot Shop there. He moved to Tucumcari, N.M., then to Clovis in 1968, and to Arkansas in 1975. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Eleanor Van Zandt of Levelland and Barbara Spurgeon of Mountain Home, Ark.; a stepdaughter, Paula Garrett of Springdale; a stepson, Larry West of Florida; five grandchildren and five great-grandsons. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Sullivan Funeral Home. Roper was born May 7, 1925, in Springfield, Mo. He married Billie Mae Gilbert Bewley on Nov. 8, 1978, in Amarillo. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he was a retired truck driver. He lived in Anaheim, Calif, before moving to Vernon in 1982. Surviving are his wife; a son, Ken Roper of Westminster, Calif.; a daughter Judy Newman of Cayon; two stepsons, John Bewley of Fort Worth and Donald Hall of Vernon;two step daughters, Mary Margaret Murphy and Lois Ann Vincent, both of Vernon; a sister, Ruth McCarty of Springfield, Mo.; 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister. Joy Sherlene Walker Joy Sherlene Walker, 52, of Childress, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, in Abilene. She was a sister of Ronald Walker of Quanah. Funeral services were held Friday at the Methodist Church in Eldorado, Okla., with the Rev. Frank Mitchell officiating. Interment was in Eldorado Cemetery under direction of Kincannon Funeral Home. Walker was born in Altus, Okla., a daughter of Eudell and Bonnie Shumaker Walker. Raymond Phillip Etherton Raymond Phillip (Ray) Etherton, 70, of Altus, Okla., died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, in an Altus hospital. He was the father of Andrew Todd Etherton of Vernon. He married Arbie Harms on Jan. 31, 1958, in Sidney. She preceded him in death. A 1949 graduate of Sidney High School, he was a U.S. Air Force veteran of Korea and Vietnam, obtaining 5,000 total flight hours and 1,000 hours of combat flying. He became a load master instructor and retired as a tech sergeant in 1975. He later worked as an interviewer for the Oklahoma State Employment Security Commission, retiring in 1990. Etherton received a bachelor of education degree from Southern Illinois University in 1970. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Altus, where he served as an elder and adult Sunday school teacher. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason, a life member of VFW Post 4876 and a volunteer with the Hospital Auxiliary and Salvation Army. He married Artie Lou Curtis on Aug. 25, 1951, and she preceded him in death in 1976. He and a brother, Roy Van Hall, owned and operated Halls TV Service in Vernon. He moved to Lubbock in 1969 and worked in the service department and as service department manager at Radio Lab until his retirement in 1989. He was a Baptist. Surviving are three daughters, Maria Leal of Quanah, Ramona Franks of Vernon and Janie Hamilton of Elm Mott, Texas; three sons, Julian Guzman Jr. of Groesbeck and Lupe Guzman and Ralph Guzman, both of Vernon; a sister, Concepcion Sanchez of Nampa, Idaho; 17 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Douglas Schrader Douglas Schrader, 76, of Lohn, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, in Brownwood. He was a brother of Darwin Schrader of Vernon. Funeral services will be at. 10 a.m. Thursday in Heritage Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Marion Cemetery. Schrader was born Oct. 4, 1924, in Santa Anna. He was a tool pusher and a Baptist. A celebration of life will follow. Long was born March 20,1947, in Vernon, a daughter of the late Granville Garrett Sr. and Frances Knight Garrett. She was a nurse and a member of Sunset Baptist Church. Garrett and Kirby Garrett, both of Denton and Jesse Garrett of Marble Falls; four sisters, Clemmie Gonzalez of Fort Worth, Kathy McMullen of Alvord, Katy Marlow of Crowell and Bernice Lozano of Vernon; and a number of grandchildren. Jones was born April 25, 1913, in Rusk, a son of the late Thomas L. and Bessie F. Manning Jones. He was a retired farmer and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church of Altus, Okla. (Bud) Hunter Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Wood Street Baptist Church for B.W. (Bud) Hunter, 84, who died Wednesday, Nov. 29,2000, in a local hospital. The Rev. Hunter was born Feb. 23, 1916, in Jacksonville, Texas, a son of the late Tom and Lula Miller Hunter. He married Queen Esther Johnson on Nov. 23, 1940, in Vernon, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 31, 1993. A resident of the Fargo community since 1939, he was a farmer with the Houston Belew family for 25 years, then served for 13 years as a custodian at Vernon Intermediate School. He was a member of Wood Street Baptist Church. Surviving are two sons, Bobbie Hunter and Robert Hunter, both of Dallas; three daughters, Esther Gates of Aurora, Colo., Betty Goss of Vernon and Shirley Hunter of Dallas; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Kathleen Brown Former Chillicothe resident Kathleen Click Brown, 77, of Lubbock, died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, in a Lubbock hospital. Brown was born Jan. 16, 1923, in Chillicothe and married Arthur Click on March 21, 1939, in Clovis, N.M. He preceded her in death on Feb. 26, 1999. A resident of Lubbock since 1950, she was a retired lab technician for Bell Dairy Products and a member of the First Assembly of God. Surviving are a son, Matthew Arthur Click of Denver, Cob.; two daughters, Dixie Click Hairgrove of Lubbock and Linna Joy Hill of Fort Worth; a sister, Billie Vaughn of Albuquerque, N.M.; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Francis Lola Taylor CHILLICOTHE (Spl) - Francis Lola Taylor, 65, died Wednesday, Nov. 29,2000, in a Chillicothe hospital. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday .at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. James Moore officiating. Interment will be in Chillicothe Cemetery under direction of Manard Funeral Home. Taylor was born July 18, 1935, in Vernon, a daughter of Gracie Long Sanders and the late Albert Sanders. She married Charles Taylor on Nov. 1, 1958, in Vernon. A graduate of Oklaunion High School, she was the retired owner of Taylors Cafe in Chillicothe. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband; four sons, Tommy Taylor of Atco, N.J., Ricky Taylor and Billy Taylor, both of Vernon, and Richard Taylor of Chillicothe; her mother, of Vernon; two sisters, Shirley Fenoglio of Quanah and Betty Childress of Hurst; and 11 grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Douglas Reagan, Buster Ford, Alton Hoke, Maurice Farris, Charles Haynes and Rookie Barnett. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The family will be at 503 Avenue N in Chillicothe.
