S. Highway 183 and about 5-1/2 miles SW of Round Rock, Williamson County, Texas, near Brushy Creek. The WALDEN section is on private property, surrounded by chain link fence. Pond Springs Cemetery - Official Texas Historical Marker - Sponsored by Karen R. Thompson and Forest North Elementary School, dedicated Oct 18,1993: This graveyard was begun for members of the Pond Springs community inthe 1860s. The oldest grave is believed to be that of Mrs. Asenath M.Stewart (d. 1862). Also interred here is Mexican War Veteran William P. Rutledge, Sr. (1815-1890), and Lavinia Hyland Chapman (1844-1929), citizen of the Republic of Texas. Although the land was in use as a graveyard earlier, it was not officially deeded as such by Thomas L. and H. M. Rutledge until 1872, and did not appear in deed records as a cemetery until 1877. It serves as a reminder of early Pond Springs history. (1988) Incise on reverse: Research by Karen Thompson About the Pond Springs Community and School: After James O. Rice settled in the 1850s near a spring-fed pond, the area was called "Pond Spring". By 1854, a log school building was erected near the pond (1 mi. N) and also served for worship and as a social center. Thomas S. Rutledge ran a nearby store, post office and blacksmith shop. After the post office closed in 1880 and the Austin & Northwestern Railroad bypassed Pond Springs in 1882, the community declined. The school was consolidated in 1903 with Jollyville, moved to this site in 1927, and became part of the Round Rock School District in 1969. Mrs. Karen R. Thompson is President of the Jollyville Historical Association, Founding President of Save Texas Cemeteries, Inc., and co-author of the book "The Complete History of Round Rock". She is very involved in the preservation and care of the Pond Springs Cemetery. She may be reached at 7203 South Ute Trail, Austin, Texas 78729, (512) 258-5688 or FAX (512) 258-7116. About this survey of the POND SPRINGS CEMETERY, Williamson County, Texas:I started with a survey made by Jean Halden Walker (JHW) and her family in 1964, with a few names on a scribbled note from Mrs. J. A. Prewitt (JAP), and several additional entries from a 1992 survey by Paul and Tommie Smith (PTS) in "Williamson County Cemeteries". Significant discrepancies are noted. I retyped the survey and incorporated the other information November 1999.Please advise me of any corrections, omissions, or questions.
