A glance, only, at the vast array of labels and bottles behind the counters and 
in the prescription department of a well conducted drug shop is necessary to 
get at the truth of the vast amount of knowledge that a person must possess in 
order to be able to successfully handle the necessities of a chemist's 
establishment.  A prominent druggist and the original merchant of Floresville, 
W. C. Agee is a native of Fayette County, Tenn., born in 1841. He is eighth in 
order of birth of nine children born to William and Julia (Henderson) Agee, 
both natives of Alabama, The father, who followed the occupation of a farmer, 
came to Texas in 1855, locating in Hopkins County, where the closing scenes of 
his life were passed the same year. The mother, who remained in Hopkins County 
until after the war, died in Williamson County in 1870. During his infancy our 
subject was taken to Mississippi by his parents and attended the schools of 
that State until 1855, when he came with his parents to Texas. Until the 
breaking out of the Rebellion he remained on the farm, and in 1861 enlisted in 
the Ninth Texas Infantry, Company F, under Captain Leftwich. He went to Iuka 
and Corinth and soon participated in the battle of Shiloh. He was in many 
skirmishes with Gen. Bragg and was in the Kentucky campaign with that General, 
participating in the battles of Perryville, Chickamauga, etc.   He was with 
Gen. Johnston about Vicksburg, later in the Atlanta campaign, and then was with 
Gen. Hood in his march north. During this campaign he participated in a pitched 
battle, where his brother, J. B., of the same company, was killed. Another 
brother, N. J., also of the same company, was killed at Atlanta. Afterwards our 
subject was at Nashville aud helped to cover the retreat of the army back to 
Tennesee River. His last engagement waa at Bacon Creek. After the war he passed 
one year in Hopkins County, Texas, and then moved to Williamson County, where 
he remained until March, 1874. At that date he moved to Floresville, then the 
recently organized county seat of Wilson County, and started the first store. 
In 1880 he changed his line of business and started the first drug store, which 
he has carried on successfully up to the present. He has a neat store, cozy and 
well stocked with chemicals, drugs, stationery, perfumes aud toilet 
preparations, and has a highly satisfactory business. Mr. Agee was married in 
1866 to Miss Carrie Reagan, a native of Mississippi, but who was reared in 
Texas. Ten children have been the fruits of this union, five of whom are 
living: John E., Maria, Julia, Walter and Carrie. Harvin died when fourteen 
years of age, but the others died in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Agee hold membership 
in the Methodist Episcopal Church South, and the former is a Mason, being now 
Worshipful Master of Floresville Lodge No. 575.
