Beakley is an exceptionally popular and successful physician of Floresville. He is scholarly and well-informed in every branch of his profession, is intelligent and well posted on all matters of public interest, and stands well in the community, both as a citizen and as a professional man. He came originally from Missouri, where his birth occurred in 1858, and was the third child born to the marriage of Dr. W. B. and America (Scantlen) Beakley, natives respectively of Tennessee and Arkansas. The father was a soldier in the Civil War, was in the engagements of Gen. Price's army around Springfield, and on the retreat of that general he came to Texas; being then over age he did not again enter the army. He was one of seventeen who started with dispatches from the field, and was the only one to get through all right. After coming to the Lone Star State he located in Bell County and engaged in farming and stock- raising, but was greatly bothered by the Indians. In 1865 he sold out and went to Lavaca County, but the health of his family not being very good there, he moved to Gonzales County in 1860, and made his home there for two years. From there he moved to Travis County and settled on a tract of laud on which the town of Manchaca was subsequently built. From there be moved to Coleman County in 1885, and there he now resides. In nearly all the places that he located he practiced his profession, and was very popular with all. Our subject grew to mature years in Texas, received a fair education in the common schools, and in 1883 began the study of medicine, entering the Louisville Medical College, from which he was graduated in 1885. Soon afterward he began practicing at his home in Manchaca with Dr. W. A. Ellison, his former preceptor, but subsequently moved from there to Fairview, in Wilson County, where he carried on a successful practice for two years. After that he was in San Antonio for two years trading horses. In the year 1800 he went to St. Louis and attended a full course of medical lectures, graduating from the Missouri Medical College the following year. From there he came to Floresville and resumed his practice. In 1893 he went to Cincinnati and took a course in the Eclectic Medical Institute, after which he returned to Floresville, and has since had a good practice. Dr. Beakley was married on his 28th birthday, August 31, 1886, in Fairview, Wilson County, to Miss Louvonia J. Mclntyre, a native of Mississippi. Two children have been born to this union: Verne Ruby, died at the age of nine months, and Mary Elsie. The doctor is a member of the Masonic order, Floresville Lodge No. 515, and he and wife hold membership in the Baptist Church. He has sold out his farming and stock-raising interests, and has since devoted himself exclusively to his profession. Although the doctor is still young in years, he has built up a reputation for skill and efficiency for which many older physicians might envy him. He graduated with distinction from the Louisville Medical College, and won one of the medals of his class. Two of the doctor's brothers are practicing physicians -- Joe F. and Ben B. Beakley.
