The fire originated in the office of the District clerk, and the whole building and contents were soon a heap of smouldering ruins. Only a few papers in the small vaults are saved. The indictments, bonds, minutes and all the records are burned. The deed was done by an incendiary who was anxious to destroy all evidence of crime against himself. Language fails in power to express the baseness of such a dastard. The records of an entire county are sacrificed to insure the destruction of an indictment against himself. His crime is one from which most hardened criminals would shrink and no punishment provided by the law is adequate to it.
