Light Special. Lavernia, Tex., Sept. 5. -- Childrens' day exercises took place at the Methodist church last Sunday night with the following program: Opening song, choir; welcome address, Mr. J. E. Canfield; song, little children; address on missions, Miss Sadie Scull; recitation, Pearl Killough; recitation, Grace Scull; responsive reading, Karen Scull; recitation, Yetta Lay; recitation, Albert Mullatt; song, choir; address on schools and colleges, Emmett Scull; song, little children; address on Sunday schools, Susie Lay; concluding address, Miss Georgia Suttles; closing song. The affair was a very pleasant one. The church was decorated nicely and had the following on the walls: "Welcome, the Lord is With Us." One of the best recitations was by Little Pearl Killough. After the exercises a collection was taken up, which was quite good. Cotton thieves are at work in this section. Several parties have lost cotton lately. Among them was Mr. Gus Turer, who lost 1,000 pounds, and Mr. Stobbs, who lost 600. The people are on the lookout for them. Mr. George Moody took his first bale of cotton to the gin Monday. Cotton pickers are scarce in this section, and in consequence considerable is standing in the field which needs picking. An ice cream supper was given Friday night in the Methodist church for the benefit of the foreign missions. Mr. Jesse Smith, who is down in this section drumming up business for Joseph Landa's flour mills and buying cotton seed, went down to Stockdale Sunday to spend two days at home. Mr. Dave Reese, a popular blacksmith here, went up to San Antonio on business Monday. Some Lavernia boys went to Adkins' Station Saturday and imbibed too much beer and other refreshments and came home feeling pretty good. The pottery factory here is full operation now. Mrs. Curo and Miss Pat McClain went to San Antonio Tuesday. An excursion over the Gulf Shore came down one day this week. The cotton gins at this place, as well as in the surrounding neighborhood, are all running at full capacity. The merchants are doing quite a brisk business at present.
