Hooper died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, in Springtown. Born March 12, 1971, in Fort Worth, he was a plumber. He was a resident of Springtown most of his life and was a member of the Agnes Baptist Church. He is survived by his son, Jake Hooper of Springtown; mother, Susan Hooper of Paradise; brother, Jim Hooper of Decatur; sister, Janise Hooper of Paradise; grandparents, Cathryn Townsend and Jo Ann Hooper, both of Wichita Falls and two nephews. Burial was to follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Weston died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, in Decatur. Born Feb. 16, 1918, in Ferris, she was a resident of Boyd since 1958. She retired from Swift and Company after 30 years of service. She is survived by her husband, James C. Weston of Boyd; a brother, Dub Tawater and wife Elsie of Canton; a son, Garld "Mickey" Dunivan of Arlington; grandchildren, Dianne Dunivan, Dana Dunivan, Garld "Sonny" Dunivan, Jr. all of Fort Worth and three great-grandchildren. Wise County Messenger, Feb. 3, 2002 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jonivee Holland 1922-2002 Service for Jonivee Holland, 79, of Boyd was Thursday, Jan. 31, at the First United Methodist Church in Boyd. The Rev. Stephen Richardson officiated. Burial followed at Keeter Cemetery. Holland died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, in Decatur. Born Feb. 14, 1922, in Tishomingo, Okla., she attended Southeastern State College at Durant, Okla. and the University of Oklahoma at Norman. She worked for the Corps of Engineers at Denison during the construction of Lake Texhoma and later for the city of Amarillo. She married Lloyd E. Holland Nov. 7, 1945, in San Antonio. The couple moved to Tulia in 1959 where they managed Gusler Products for several years. During the early 1970s, Holland worked at the Swisher County Clerk’s office and in 1974, she and her husband became owners of Swisher Ambulance Service. The couple retired in 1987 and moved to Boyd in 1994. She is best remembered for her deep involvement in Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, PTA and the Business and Professional Women’s Club where she was recognized as Woman of the Year in 1970. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Lloyd Holland; two sons, Charles E. Holland and wife Debbie of Hutto and Billy G. Holland and wife Melinda of Quanah; one daughter, D’Ann Johnson and husband Mark of Boyd; three granddaughters, Crimson Dawnivee Jimenez and husband Matt of Austin, Kristen Holland of Hutto and Rachel Holland of Quanah; three grandsons, Jonathan Johnson of Boyd, Kyle Johnson of Austin and Nathan Holland of Quanah; one great granddaughter, Maya Jimenez of Austin; several nieces and nephews. Marks died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, in Oklahoma City. Born Sept. 19, 1931, in Decatur to Rev. Joe B. Rice and Zora Stockton Rice, she graduated from Central High School in Oklahoma City and attended Central State College in Edmond Okla., eventually earning two degrees from Northern Oklahoma College. She was an artist and musician, playing piano and the organ for various Baptist churches in Beaver and Blackwell, Okla. She served as a trustee on the Blackwell Regional Hospital and Oklahoma Baptist Hospital boards. She served as a medical assistant in offices in Beaver and Blackwell and as a neonatal registered nurse in Ponca City, Okla. She also had a construction business. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Dr. John W. Born June 6, 1918, in Reagan, she served in the U.S. Navy from March 1945 until May 1946. She was stationed in Washington D.C. in parachute rigging and riveting. She married John E. Wise County Messenger, Feb. 14, 2002 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ernest Eugene ‘Gene’ Carter 1911-2002 Funeral for Ernest Eugene (Gene) Carter, 90, of Arlington, a former owner of the Wise County Messenger was Tuesday in Arlington with burial at Elmwood Cemetery in Bowie. Carter owned the Messenger from 1960 to 1973 before he retired and moved to Arlington. He began his newspaper career in Bowie and also worked in Muenster before becoming a co-owner of the weekly newspaper in Seymour. He purchased the Messenger in 1960. Carter was born in Bridgeport on Feb. 22, 1911 and graduated from Bowie High School in 1929. He also attended Draughon’s Business College in Fort Worth before beginning his newspaper career. He was a former deacon of the First Baptist Church in Decatur and a former member of the Decatur Lions Club. Carter is survived by his wife of 68 years, Rose and his daughter Peggy and her husband Worth Marshall of Arlington, two brothers, W. D. Carter of Grand Prairie and M. D. Wise County Messenger, Feb. 14, 2002 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Leroy ‘Bob’ Taylor 1927-2002 Service for Leroy "Bob" Taylor, 74, of Bridgeport was to be Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Bridgeport. Sanders and Garry Cathey. Taylor died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, in Bridgeport. Born Aug. 28, 1927, in Bridgeport, he married Eunice Sanders Feb. 22, 1968, at the First Baptist Church in Bridgeport. He retired after 40 years of service as a signalman for Burlington Northern Railroad. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bridgeport. He is survived by his wife, Eunice Taylor; his sister, Lorraine Berg of Fort Worth; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. (Red) Davis, 87, of Midlothian, formerly of Alvord, was Monday, Feb. 4, at Coward Funeral Home in Midlothian. The Rev. Dave Wyrtzen officiated. Burial followed at St. Paul Cemetery in Mansfield. Pallbearers were Sid Harrison, David Davis, Dan Hubin, Joseph Calillet, Randall Hudson and Gerry Galindo. Davis died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, in Waxahachie. Born June 10, 1914, to Albert Henry and Ollie (Ray) Davis in Alvord, he spent his youth in the Alvord area before moving to Dallas. He drove a bus for All American Bus Lines and later retired from Continental Bus Lines. In the early 1950s, he and his family moved to Midlothian where he became a dairy farmer and a Surge Dairy Equipment dealer. He was a lifetime member of the Amalgamated Transit Union, joining in 1935. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John L. Davis and a sister, Reta Wedig. He is survived by his wife, MaBelle Davis and a son, Dan Ray Davis, both of Midlothian; a daughter, Lynn Hubin of Spooner, Wis.; a brother, Tom Davis of Calif.; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cleophus Bagwell, on Nov. 24, 1999. She had been a resident of Sunny Hills Nursing Center since 1990. Longtime friend Roy Eaton spoke at her service at Coker Funeral Home in Decatur on Tuesday. Burial was at Oaklawn Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were employees of Sunny Hills and the Wise County Messenger. Roselle was born March 8, 1905 at Leon, Oklahoma Territory, the daughter of William G. and Mattie Pearl Ward Price. After graduation from Helena (Okla.) High School in 1924, she taught three years in one-room schoolhouses and attended summer college classes. She married William Bell Roselle on June 26, 1932 at Durant, Okla. They both worked for Singer Sewing Machine Co. After living in several midwestern cities and in Los Angeles, they settled in Fort Worth in 1941. They operated a collection agency for doctors and dentists for 30 years. In 1972, they moved to Decatur with their son, Kenneth, when he became Messenger editor. For three years, they helped distribute the newspaper. Her husband died Feb. 22, 1978 at age 95. Her step-daughter, Iva Jackson of Houston, died in 1958, and her step-son, Bluford Roselle of Kansas, died in 1997. Other survivors include her daughter-in-law, Lynnda; step-grandsons and several nieces and nephews. Wise County Messenger, Feb. 28, 2002 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ola Mae Blair 1910-2002 Graveside service for Ola Mae Blair, 92, a Sunny Hills resident for six years, was to be Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 2:30 p.m. at Azleland Cemetery. Blair died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, in Decatur. Born Feb. 18, 1910, in Parker County, she was a real estate agent and a musician. She joined the 101 Wild West Show as a performer in 1926, touring the U.S. for five years. She married V.C. (Banty) Blair in 1932 in Marietta, Okla. Later, she designed and tailored custom western wear. She owned and operated Center Point Grocery and Station for several years in Azle. She was preceded in death by her husband; two children, Bobby Lee McCrory and Barbara Ann Pickett; two sisters and two brothers. She is survived by her children, Kay Caudill of Graford, Sharon Whittenburg of Boyd, Benny and Banty Blair, both of Azle; two sisters Mozelle Wright and Rozelle Wrinkle, both of Azle; 21 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. The Revs. Duane Peters and Gary Speers were to officiate. Burial was to follow at Van Alstyne Cemetery. His wife is the former Peggy Denney of Chico. Pallbearers were to be Scott Bradley, Jim Bob Bradley, Will Bradley, Bobby Lynn Denney, Robert Bradley and Noel Bradley. Bradley died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, in Dallas. Born Aug. 31, 1955, in Van Alstyne, to Wayne and Carol Ireland Bradley, he graduated from Van Alstyne High School in 1973 and received an associates degree in ranch management from Cooke County College. He married Peggy Denney, formerly of Chico, on Aug. 30, 1975, in Chico. He was the ranch manager at E Bar S Ranch in Sunnyvale. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Bradley of Sunnyvale; a daughter, Stephanie Bradley of Abilene; his father, Wayne Bradley of Van Alstyne; his mother, Carol Bradley of Van Alstyne and three brothers, Robert Wayne Bradley of Frisco, Bill Tom Bradley of Sherman and Noel Bradley of Whitewright.
