The Rev. Kenny Cates officiated the ceremony with the assistance of Rev. Kenneth Johnson. Burial followed at Hog Branch Cemetery. Scroggins died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, in Boyd. Born May 12, 1943, in Boyd to Eugene and Mildred Lynch Scroggins, he married Nancy Stevenson Nov. 25, 1988, in Azle. He was a mechanic for American Airlines and owner of Scroggins Paint and Body. He organized the Boyd Moose Lodge, was a past governor, a fellowship degree, a member of Moose Lodge 1100 and a volunteer at the VFW in Azle. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Randy. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Scroggins; three sons, Russell Scroggins and wife, Judy, Rod Scroggins and wife, Bonnie, and Floyd Stanley; two brothers, Delbert Scroggins and wife, Ann, and Norman Scroggins and wife, Del Ray; a sister, Delorice Illchen and five grandchildren. Faye Vaughn Johnson 1935-2003 Funeral for Faye Vaughn Johnson, 68, of Chico will be Monday, Oct. 6, at 10 a.m. at Hawkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Elaine Bussey will officiate. Burial will follow at Chico Cemetery. Family will receive friends at Hawkins Funeral Home on Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. Johnson died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, in Chico. Born April 3, 1935, in Daingerfield, she was a retired waitress who had lived in the Chico community since the late 1950s. She married Teddy Johnson on May 29, 1965, in Chico. She was a member of the Church of Christ of Chico. She is survived by her husband; a son, Rex Johnson of Chico; a daughter, Sheliah Potter of Madisonville, Tenn.; three brothers, Olen Vaughn of Daingerfield, Donald Vaughn of Midlothian and Neil Vaughn of Daingerfield; five sisters, Verna Lee Brantley of Daingerfield, Dorothy Lanier of Daingerfield, Patsy Brown of Longview, Zeldia Eaton of LaPorte and Bettie Ellis of Tyler; a granddaughter, Shelley Cearley of Chico; a special ‘grandson’ Wesley Moody and numerous nieces and nephews. Sibyl Enis 1916-2003 Memorial service for Sibyl Enis, 87, of Greenwood will be Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at Coker Funeral Home Chapel in Decatur. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be Oct. 5 at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. Born May 21, 1916, in Justin to Walter and Myra Jeane Wallace, she died Oct. 2, 2003, in Decatur. She married Pete Enis on Nov. 22, 1935, in Argyle. He preceded her in death in March 1970. Their son, Joel died in June 1951. Sibyl is survived by a son, Grady “Bud” Enis and his wife, Joyce, of Decatur; a daughter, Dianne Barron, and her husband, Bobby, of Keller; a sister, Ann Blackburn of Fort Worth; five grandchildren, Greg and Curtis Enis, Erin Lee, Rickey Barron and Nicole Eminger and 10 great-grandchildren. Edwin Earl Read 1919-2003 Funeral for Edwin Earl Read, 94, of Merkel was Oct. 2, 2003, at the First United Methodist Church of Merkel. The Rev. Curtis Bentley officiated. Burial followed at Rose Hill cemetery. Read died Sept. 30, 2003, in Merkel. Born Feb. 18, 1909, in Paradise to Walter and Jannie Lindsey Read, he married Evelyn Phelps on June 3, 1933, in Plainview. Read received his bachelor’s degree from North Texas State Teachers College and his master’s degree from Texas Christian University. He was track coach at Lakeview from 1931-32 and took the team to state. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and an administrator of ground training at Greenville Air Force Base in Greenville, S. C., and separations counselor at Fort Dix, N. J. He was principal and coached basketball at Noodle from 1937 to 1941 and was principal of Merkel High School from 1941 to 1972 where he received a 27-year teaching award. He was grand marshal of the Merkel Christmas Parade in 1992, past president of the Jones County Teacher’s Association, past president of the Merkel Lions Club and a life member of the Anson Masonic Lodge No. 0575. He was a member of the Merkel First United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Read of Merkel; a son, John Read and wife, Franney of Abilene; a daughter, Jean Read Clair of Mesquite; a sister, Iva Ruth Rhodes of Paradise; four grandchildren, April and Michael Clair, Shawn Read and Sharon Box; five step-grandchildren, Robert Terry, Larry Standfield, Keri Massey and Samantha Pabalan and five great-grandchildren. Born March 4, 1924, in Hugo, Okla., he was a retired machinist with General Dynamics. He served in the Army and had been a peanut farmer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pansy Helton, and a brother, Lloyd Helton. She was born Aug. 7, 1915, in Bridgeport to Lee and Mattie Barnett Phillips. She graduated from Bridgeport High School in 1932 and Louisiana Tech in Ruston, La., in 1936. She taught home economics for 40 years, the last 36 in Bridgeport. During her life, she received many honors, including the dedication of the 1960 school annual to her, teacher of the year in 1954, homecoming queen for ex-students at Bridgeport High School, lady of the year by Psi Psi Upsilon Society, Past Worthy Matron, 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the wall of fame for Exes of BHS. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II, a Purple Heart recipient, a member of the Masonic Lodge, former Lake Bridgeport City Council member, a member of the Lake Bridgeport Baptist Church and former school board member of Perrin ISD. He married Millie Schlaepfer on May 25, 1946, in Aspermont. He is preceded in death by two brothers, Henry and Jim Gardner and a sister, Chris Criswell. Earnest Price 1914-2003 Graveside service for Earnest Price, 89, of Whitney was Friday, Oct. 17, at Bethlehem Cemetery in Whitney. He was the father of Gerald Price of Decatur. He also received a sportsman of the year plaque and certificate of recognition for 50 years as Houndsman of Texas from the 50th annual Texas Coonhound Championship.
