JAMES THOMAS (DOC) SIMPER, DVM BRIGHAM CITY - James Thomas (Doc) Simper, DVM came to Brigham City in 1955 to administer to sick and afflicted animals, both large and small, of Box Elder County. Unsure as to whether a young Veterinarian could make a go of it in Brigham City, with his young wife, Shirley, and their four small children, he not only thrived, but made a significant contribution to the community. Dr. James T. Simper passed away on Thursday, August 29, 2002, after an extended illness. He was 75. He was "Doc" to the many grateful ranchers and farmers he served in the early years, but was "Jim" to his many friends and neighbors. He was a gifted surgeon and healer of animals. The eldest and only son of Thomas and Maureen Simper, born February 11, 1927, in Tooele, Utah, he grew up in Salt Lake City, Kamas, and Pleasant Grove. His early life was spent on a pastoral ranch in Kamas, where he explored the treasures of this Weber River valley on the back of his horse and bore a significant share of the hard labor necessary on a ranch. This was the place remembered most fondly throughout his life. The ranch was lost during the great depression and the family was forced to move to Pleasant Grove and the work available in the Geneva Steel Mills. During these years, Jim was an All-State football player for Pleasant Grove High. He left school before completing his senior year, to join the Navy during the waning years of WWII. As a medical corpsman he cared for many of the survivors of the Baatain Death march. Following military service, Jim attended Utah State University where he met his life long mate, Shirley Heslop. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on August 27, 1947. He received his Bachelor of Science degree and was USU s first graduate to be accepted to the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University. He was awarded his DVM in 1955. During his forty-plus years serving the community as a veterinarian, he was also active in professional, church and community service. He has been a Boy Scout Leader; a member on the Board of Directors of the Utah Veterinary Medical association; a member for eleven years on the Brigham City Planning Commission, nine years as chairman, and six years as chairman of the Board of Adjustments. He was also an active and proud member of the Brigham City Rotary Club for his entire professional life, where he served in many offices, including President. He was most gratified, with Shirley s constant support, to become a Paul Harris Fellow and to serve as the Rotary District Governor for the State of Utah in 1991-92. His many Rotarian friends span the globe. In 1996, the Brigham City Chamber of Commerce honored him as "Total Citizen of the Year". He was blessed with good friends through out his life, who shared his commitment to community service, with justified time off for fishing, hunting, golf, or just being with people of good cheer. Whether wading the Henry s Ford, fly rod in hand, with his sons or sneaking the grand kids away for ice cream, who he was with was more important than what he was doing. He took great pride in his children and grandchildren. He is survived by Shirley, his wife of 55 years; his children; Craig (Teri) Simper, Shirlene Leavitt, Bruce (Val) Simper, and Steve (Joanna) Simper; 15 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; siblings Elizabeth (Ken) Harvey, Marilyn Shields, and Geniel (Darson) Roper. His grandson, Jonathan, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be Spt. 3, 2002 at 11:00 A.m. at the Brigham City 17th L.D.S. Ward, 139 E. #300 N. Friends may call at Gillies - Petersen Funeral Chapel, 634 E. 200S. On Sept. 2nd from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. and from 9:30 to 10:30 A.M. at the church. Interment will be in the Brigham City cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Rotary Foundation, c/o Bruce Evans, Brigham City Rotary Club, P.O. Box 841, Brigham City, UT 84302. Imagine Heaven as a place where all of the animals you have loved during your life rush to greet you with tails a wagging. Jim s s welcome was joyous indeed.
