WEESE BRIGHAM CITY D.C. Weese, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great- grandfather passed away Monday, June 3, 2002 at the Brigham City Community Hospital, surrounded by his loving wife and family. D.C. was born November 7, 1921 in Gans, Oklahoma to William Henry and Anna May Weese. He spent his younger days in Drumright, Oklahoma, where he was educated. While in Drumright, he married Mary Elizabeth Ball in 1942. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan L.D.S. Temple in 1962. D.C. was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army and was involved with the Pacific Theatre of War. He was employed in the aerospace industry for 42 years, retiring from Thiokol Corp. in 1988. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many positions. He especially enjoyed his work with the youth and Scouting. He participated in many sports, but his passion was fishing and introducing his children, then his grandchildren, to its wonders. He loved his family dearly, and they loved him. His kindness and unconditional love will be greatly missed. He is remembered to many as a true friend. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary; children, Michael (Arlene) Weese, Roy; Gary Weese, Fontana, CA; Anna Inman, Brigham City; and Richard Weese, Brigham City;15 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, three step-great grandchildren; one sister, Norma (Faron) Lockwood, Edmond, OK. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Duane, and sister Wanda. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 8, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. at Myers Mortuary, 205 S. 100 E., Brigham city. Send condolences to the family at www.myers-mortuary.com Gerben Hoekstra Brigham City - Gerben Hoekstra, 69, of Brigham City was suddenly and unexpectedly called home to his Heavenly Father Tuesday morning, June 4th, 2002 due to heart failure. The son of Willem and Yfke Wybinga Hoekstra, he was born December 6th, 1932 in Wirdum, Friesland, The Netherlands. A veteran, Gerben honorably served in the Royal Netherlands Navy. Following his service in the Navy he worked at a dairy factory in Holland, before emigrating to the United States in 1957. While in America, he reunited with his longtime sweetheart, Marijke DeVries, and they were married November 19, 1958 in Bellflower, California. He was proud to become a United States citizen in 1968. Gerben worked as a Dairy Plant Engineer in California, relocating with his wife and three daughters to Brigham City, Utah in 1973, where he took a job at Cream 'O Weber in nearby Ogden. He later worked at the Autoliv plant in Brigham City. A sports fanatic, he followed everything from international soccer to American football and basketball, often planning his days around the latest Utah Jazz game. He loved to play as well, participating in church sports for many years. Other activities he enjoyed were his daily drives with his wife, vacationing with his wife and friends, fishing with his children and grandchildren, and later in life, meeting with his weekly Bridge Club, and the occasional pilgrimage to Wendover. He was without a doubt the world's greatest Grandpa, and loved spending time with his grandkids almost as much as they loved spending time with him. Gerben is survived by his loving wife, Marijke; his three daughters and their spouses, Louise and Marc Stromberg of Brigham City, Yvonne and Corey Bronson of Plymouth, and Michelle and Nelson Phillips of Perry; as well as 17 grandchildren. He is also survived by 2 sisters, Marijke Haaiman of Holland and Altsje Sinnema of Holland; 5 brothers, Sjoerd Hoekstea of Canada, Minne Hoekstra of Holland, Jinke Hoekstra of Canada, Gochem Hoekstra of Holland, and Willem Hoekstra of Holland. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Lieuwe Hoekstra; and one grandson, Kade Gordon Bronson. He recently celebrated his 91st birthday. Born June 3, 1911 to Joseph H. Felt and Violetta Nott Felt in Salt Lake City, he spent most of his childhood in Ogden. He married Lillian Hayes in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on June 11, 1934 and moved to Brigham City to establish the Larkin-Felt Funeral Home, the first full-service mortuary in that community. He also started the first ambulance service and the first airport in Brigham City. As President of the Utah Funeral Directors Association he was instrumental in starting Sentinel Life Insurance Company and served as Vice President and a member of the Board of Directors until his death. Mr. Felt served one term as Mayor of Brigham City and three terms on the Box Elder School Board. While he was President of the Brigham City Chamber of Commerce he played a major role in bringing a branch of Thiokol Chemical Corporation to Box Elder County. He served as Second Counselor in the LDS First Ward Bishopric and was a member of the music committee responsible for the installation of the pipe organ in the historic Box Elder Tabernacle. He also started the Box Elder Stake Choir. He was concertmaster in the Northern Utah Orchestra and organizer of the Senior Swingers, an instrumental musical group. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lillian; his son, Harold Blaine Jr.; his granddaughter, KayLynn Johnson; one brother, J. Gordon Felt and one brother-in-law, Earl K. Seegmiller. He is survived by his daughter, Sharlene Nelson of Orem, UT; his son, Richard (Linda) Felt of Brigham City, UT; one sister, Varine F. Seegmiller of Orem; one sister-in-law, Helen M. Felt of Perry; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Brigham City 9th Ward, 236 East 100 South in Brigham City, with Bishop Jeffrey S. Packer conducting.. Interment will be in the Brigham City Cemetery. ROBERT W. BOCKOVEN BRIGHAM CITY Robert W. Bockoven, 85, passed away Sunday, June 9, 2002 at Brigham City Nursing & Rehab. He was born February 15, 1917 in Whitehall, Montana a son of George A. and Maude E. Parson Bockoven. Bob served in the Army in WWII, he was a sergeant and Platoon Leader. He married Mildred Fern Hoy, who died on October 8, 1969. Then he later married Illa Sarot. Bob was known as Cowboy Bob at the Brigham Senior Center and always enjoyed making people laugh. He is survived by his daughters; Geraldine Sharon Parker, Joshua Tree, CA, Sandra (Bob) Kolendar, Brigham City, UT, four step-daughters; Frances Avalos, San Diego, CA, Marian Sarot, San Diego, Ca, Christine Crowell, San Francisco, CA, 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was born June 30, 1970 in Brigham City, Utah to his proud parents, Dee and Elaine Andersen. Kevin was a son, the best of brothers and a wonderful father. His greatest joy came in spending time with his son KoDee. They were the best of friends. Kevin continued his post-high school education at Weber State University. His love was construction and therefore pursued a career as a heavy equipment operator. He loved to fish, he loved his music and he loved his family. We will always miss him and cherish our time with him. Kevin leaves us with his ability to love unconditionally, his playfulness, his tender heart and his wisdom "to know what it takes". Send condolences to the family at www.myers-mortuary.com William Harold Yates BRIGHAM CITY - A man for all seasons, William Harold Yates, 72, died peacefully in his sleep on June 13, 2002, in Brigham City. He was born April 18, 1930, in Laramie, WY, a son of James O. and Mary Goddard Yates. Known as Bill, he grew up and graduated from high school in Green River, WY, then attended the University of Wyoming. After serving in the US Army in Korea, he attended the University of Utah. He married Sarah Elizabeth Seibel on Aug. 29, 1959, in American Fork, UT, and they lived all their married life and raised their children in Brigham City, where he was employed with Thiokol for 33 years prior to his retirement in 1992. During his early years in Brigham City he was a member of Jaycees, Elks and Toastmasters and was affiliated with the Unitarian Church. At the time of his death he was a life member of the Wasatch Mountain Club and the Utah Statewide Archaeological Society. One of his hobbies was creating stained glass artworks for his family. Bill loved the outdoors, particularly the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming, Red Rock country of Southern Utah, and the Oregon Coast. He enjoyed many years of camping, hiking, backpacking, running rivers and cross-country skiing with his family and with friends. He loved reading, gourmet cooking, good wine, jazz and Celtic music, history, science, his yard, archaeology, large dogs and any cat. He passed those passions to his family, and was his granddaughters' expert on scientific subjects. Most of all, he loved Sarah, his children, grandchildren and sister, all of whom survive him. He will be fondly remembered by many, but most of all by his wife Sarah, children and spouses, Kathryn (Doug) Shupe of Kearns, UT; J. Gregory (Beth) Yates of Winnemucca, NV; Bradley Yates of Salt Lake City; his princess granddaughters, Becky Shupe, Rachel and Chloe Yates; and his sister, Jean Keeney of Rock Springs, WY; as well as by in-laws, nieces and nephews. His dogs Nootka and Stormy and cats Kubla and Missy are still looking for him. Bill chose to donate his body to the University of Utah School of Medicine. Friends are invited to visit with the family on Sunday, June 16, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the family home, 625 West 600 South, Brigham City. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 26, at 11 a.m. at the Community Presbyterian Church, with the family greeting friends from 10 a.m. until the service. In lieu of flowers, Bill said he would prefer donations to the Wasatch Mountain Club lodge fund or the Nature Conservancy. FAYE W. HANSEN BRIGHAM CITY Faye Ward Hansen, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away from congestive heart failure, June 11, 2002 in the Brigham City, Utah. Faye was born May 13, 1919 in Woodruff (Malad), Idaho a daughter of Arthur M. and Cecil M. Ward. She was preceded in death by her parents; Arthur and Cecil Ward of Malad and four sisters; Elaine (Ralph) Gardner of Salt Lake City, Theda (Max) Pilgrim of Malad, Idaho; Thelma (Glen) Price of Malad, Idaho and Dorothy (Lee) Knorr of Salt Lake City and her only brother, Lynn (Margaret) Ward of St. George, with one surviving sister; Wanda (Burton Napier), (Verdie) Wharton of Malad, Idaho. Surviving her death is her husband of 63 years, Khalil V. "KV" Hansen with children; Sheldon K. (Carol) Hansen, of Mesa, Arizona, Byron W. (Lynda) Hansen, of Brigham City, Utah, Linda (Wm.O.) Perry, of Sandy, Utah, Kim S. (Pat) Hansen, of Burley, Idaho, Janet ( Steve) Goldsmith, of Sandy, Utah, 26 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She married her loving companion, Khalil V. "K.V." Hansen on January 27, 1939 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. In her life, her family came first and her church came next. She insisted on regular family gatherings; including holidays and other special occasions. She especially enjoyed family members at their cabin on Bear Lake for family outings. All of these family gatherings ended in a musical program from each family. She was very musically talented, having performed in over 100 funerals along with many civic and church functions. In her early life she sang with her sisters as a group known as the "Ward Sisters". She insisted that her family perfect their singing and ability to play the piano. She was proud of her pioneer heritage. Her greatest joy came from the fact that her family was all active in the church. Seventeen of her family have served Missions for the LDS church with three currently serving in various parts of the world. Two of her sons have served as Bishops and the third in a Bishopric; her daughter Linda and son-in-law William O. Perry served as President of the Hawaii Honolulu Mission. She has been privileged to travel over a great part of the world; Western Europe, China, India, Korea, Japan, Nepal, and many Pacific Islands. She was involved with her husband in the ownership of several G.M. dealerships, two cattle ranches, and a banking operation. During her lifetime she has lived in Malad City, Idaho where she was born; Montpelier, Idaho and Brigham City, Utah. She served in many church assignments: serving as the music director of both wards and stakes; teacher, and the President of Box Elder Stake Relief Society. Over her lifetime she has given many book reviews and talks pertaining to her travels. Macavinta Virginia Macavinta, 75, beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, left this world gently and quietly on Wednesday, June 19, 2002. She was born January 6, 1927 in Sheridan Wyoming to Jose M. Garcia and Emma Sandoval Garcia. She was the eldest of seven children. She and her family moved to Utah in 1933 where she lived until she met and married Sam Macavinta. They were married January 16, 1944 in Salt Lake City. At the time of her husband s death, they had been married 55 years. Together they raised a family of seven children and instilled into each one of them the importance of love, loyalty and the unity of family. She loved to garden and she adored children. Each new grandchild was a flower in my own garden. She was a member of the Roman Catholic Church and attended St. Mary s Parish in Ogden. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two brothers and one sister. She is survived by seven children, Sylvia (Rick) Lenzie of Ogden; Joe (Debby) Macavinta of Corinne; Julie (John) Klick of Ogden; Dolores Macavinta of Ogden; Fran (Alan) Morriss of Perry; Lorri (Bruce) Finch of Layton; Donny (Stacey) Macavinta of Layton; 18 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Mary Mendez of Roy; Helen Singh of Brigham; Lila Naranjo of New Mexico; one brother, Cedric Walks-Over-Ice of Montana; and many nieces and nephews. Send condolences to family at www.myers-mortuary.com Leeann Rich Munson LOGAN, UTAH - Leeann Rich Munson, 43, passed away on Friday, June 21, 2002, as a result of an automobile accident near Lake Powell. Leeann was born July 1, 1958, in Las Vegas, Nevada. She is the daughter of Gene Munns and Wayne R. Rich. She was educated in Logan City Schools and graduated from Logan High School in 1976. She participated in the Logan High "Hi-Lo's" and was proud to see her daughter follow in her footsteps. She was also awarded the "Outstanding Business Award" her junior year. She graduated from Utah State University with a degree in Home Economics. On June 14, 1979, she married Michael L. Munson in the Logan LDS Temple. They were blessed with four beautiful children. She has been an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in many callings. Leeann was a very devoted mother that loved every minute of being a mom. She was a wonderful wife, mother and homemaker. Recently she has enjoyed being a grandmother to her beautiful granddaughter, Taiya. Leeann was a devoted daughter, sister and friend. Even though her greatest joy in life was being a mother, she enjoyed many friends and co-workers at the Logan Regional Hospital. During the past 17 years she held various positions and was known for her sense of humor and quick wit. She brought a spirit of happiness to those she cared about and will always be remembered by those who loved her. BOWEN BRIGHAM CITY Wayne Weyermann Bowen, 78, passed away Thursday, June 20, 2002 at his home, after an extended illness. Wayne was born January 15, 1924 in Beaver Dam, Utah a son of Gideon Lenoard and Anna Weyermann Bowen. He served in the Army in WWII. Wayne married Gwenna May Poulsen on June 26, 1951 in the Logan Temple. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Where he served in many callings including, Stake Missionary, a member of the Mission Presidency, Ward Bishoprics, Sunday School Superintendent, and Stake Sunday School Board. He is survived by his caring, loving, devoted sweetheart of 51 years; Gwenna May, Brigham City, children; Michael Wayne Bowen, Brigham City, Christine (Roger) Baron, Brigham City, Sharon (Dean) Richins, Orem, and Brenda (Dennis) Decker, Salt Lake City, 13 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, sisters and brothers; Ruth (Peter) Grieves, Edith (Frank) Forsgren, Elsie (Morgan) Hawkes, Grant (Maurine) Bowen, Paul (Eva Lou) Bowen and Ann Reynolds. BEECHER BRIGHAM CITY - Nina Hess (Figgins) Beecher, 90, passed away Friday, June 21, 2002 from causes incident to age. She was born October 27, 1911 in Fielding, Utah to Jedediah Morgan Hess Jr. and Alice Laub. Her mother died in January 1912. She was then raised by Henry M. and Ora Figgins in Brigham City, Utah, where she lived all but four years of her life. She graduated from Box Elder High School in 1928. She married Elbert R. Beecher on November 21, 1930 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She then waited for him two years while Elbert fulfilled a mission for the LDS Church. She raised four children, Brent (Patsy) of Kaysville, UT; Denton (Francine) of Brigham City, UT; Neal (Jackie) Wellsville, UT; Janet (James) Harmon Spokane, WA. She was a legal secretary for 40 years working for several attorneys in Brigham City. She also transcribed patriarchal blessings for many years. She was very active in her church, serving as music leader, Stake Relief Society President and many other positions. She enjoyed the 15- years of service in the Ogden Temple as an ordinance worker. She is survived by her husband to whom she has been married for 71 years, her four children and their spouses; two brothers Noel Hess and Floyd Hess; 18 grandchildren, and 40 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and two sisters. Send condolences to the family at www.myers-mortuary.com Leola Larsen Brigham City Leola Poppleton Bailey Larsen, 79, passed away Thursday, June 27, 2002 after a prolonged and painful illness at her home in Brigham City, Utah. She was born on October 16, 1922 in Wellsville, UT to Oliver Smith and Leola Poppleton Bailey. She graduated from South Cache High School where she was valedictorian. She attended Utah State University. Leola married Grant H. Larsen on September 28, 1942 in the Logan LDS Temple. This marriage was performed during WWII when her husband was serving in the 10th Mountain Infantry. Leola chose secretarial work as her avocation and work at the Brigham City Police Dept. as secretary to the chief of police and also as a police matron. Later she worked for Brigham City Corp. as secretary and Deputy Recorder. She has always been an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and has served two church missions with her husband. First was the Washington DC North Mission, and second the LDS employment Mission. She served in many ward and stake positions - Primary, Young Womens , Relief Society and repeatedly as ward organist and chorister. She was a very talented woman who enjoyed art, art needlework, crocheting, and knitting. She was an accomplished musician, she played and taught piano, organ, and guitar lessons. She was an avid reader of many types of literature. She had many interests, yet often remarked that the greatest joy and love of her life was her family. She was preceded in death by her son Grant Bryce Larsen .Surviving are her husband, Grant H. Larsen, daughter; Deon Larsen (Richard) Dunn of Brigham; sons Marc Thayne (Debbie) Larsen of Brigham, Karl Rex (Shanna) Larsen of Mendon, UT, and Kent Wayne (Brenda) Larsen of Pleasant View, UT, 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Leola is the oldest of 5 sisters. She was also preceded in death by her sister Anna Lou (Ellis) Kendrick of Hooper, UT. HUNSAKER HONEYVILLE Lois Grant Hunsaker, 87, passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2002 after a lingering illness at Peach Tree Place in Brigham City, Utah. She was born on January 27, 1915 in Logan, UT to Abraham and Flora May Theurer Grant. She graduated from Box Elder High School and studied at Weber State College. She was Brigham City Peach Queen in 1931. Lois married Alton Alma Hunsaker on February 20, 1932 in Brigham City and they were later sealed in the Logan Temple. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her callings included President of the Young Womens Organization, serving in the ward Relief Society presidency of Honeyville and the Stake Primary presidency. She spent many hours doing temple work and her and Alton served a 2 year ward temple mission. She worked 20 years in the Box Elder County Courthouse and 10 years as Deputy County Recorder. Lois enjoyed gardening and was very proud of her prize roses. She also loved sewing and quilting and did extensive traveling through out the world. She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters, husband and her son Alton Grant Hunsaker. Surviving are her daughter; Carol Hunsaker (Russell) Shepherd, Ogden, UT, daughter-in-law; Joelynne Thomas Hunsaker, Pocatello, ID, nine grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and a sister Leah Grant Baugh, Harper Ward, UT The family would like to thank Peach Tree Place and Utah's Heritage Hospice for their unconditional service and loving care they gave to Lois. Send condolences to the family at www.myers-mortuary.com Merlin Alfred Hansen St. George, Ut - Ret. 2nd Lt., USA Merlin Alfred Hansen, 83, passed away June 30, 2002 at his home in St. George, Utah, with his wife and daughters by his side. He has suffered long but is now at peace and free of pain. Merlin was born in Corinne, Utah on February 7, 1919 to Alfred H. and Lydia S. Hindburg Hansen. He was the oldest of seven children with four brothers and two sisters. He was raised in Corinne and graduated from Box Elder High School. He wooed and won his sweetheart Donne H. Wankier Hansen and married her almost 60 years ago on September 23, 1942. During WWII Merlin served with distinction in the US Army as a tank commander. From Utah Beach, D-Day plus 1, he was in combat a record of 187 days straight including the "Battle of the Bulge". During this period he earned a battlefield commission, the Bronze Star with V (valor), the Purple Heart and many other decorations. Merlin is definitely going to heaven because he has already seen hell. With his Honorable Discharge in hand, Merlin and his bride made a home in Corinne, UT and proceeded to have a grand adventure raising daughters, Jane and Valerie. Along with the pleasure he derived from his family, Merlin could lie with the best of his fellow fishermen but didn't need to lie about the monster mule deer he shot hunting. Merlin was also an avid bowler and continued to bowl until shortly before his death. Somewhere in all of this he managed to work for the Bear River Valley Co-Op, Heston Corp and retired from Thiokol Chemical Corp. Merlin was feisty and fun loving and just about the best inventor and jury rigger around. There was nothing he couldn't fix or make. He was also famous for his many "Merlin" quotes. Merlin is survived by his loving wife, Donna; two daughters, Jane and Valerie; their families, Jane and Allen Jaggi: Shaun (Belinda), Scott (Tracy), Ric and Crystal (Ben); Valerie and Bruce Simper: Melanie (Joe), Trent and Bret. He adored his seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Surviving also are his sisters, Ila Nelson and LaRaine Nelson and brothers, Dee and Lee Hansen. Graveside services will be Saturday, July 6, 1 p.m. at the Brigham City Cemetery for family and friends to bid farewell to our husband, father, grandfather and friend.
